Thanks for the review. I have purchased the RX10 M4 just a week ago. The video of this camera is its strongest point and i mean it. I own cameras from Nikon up to Ursa 4.6k and i needed a more compact solution for trips and quick mobilization. IF u need a great XAVCS 4k shooter then go for the RX10. Battery is not that bad as most people say and I still struggle with proper autofocus even if its has over 300 points. Needs lots of practice.

I received mine a couple a days ago and it is incredibly sharp and fast and the only thing that is missing is the ability to get shallow depth of field and ultra wide angle shots. It appears to struggle a bit with close up focusing at 600mm but the hit rate is almost 100% shooting surfing at 600mm. Serious photographers will still need a interchangeable lens camera around the house for those ultra wide angle and shallow dept of field shots but you will only need a couple of lens for those specialty shots and not a expensive body. There is no Bokeh unless you are super close and zoomed in to 500mm. The only way to get separation for a portrait would be to use off camera flash with a high shutter speed. Good news is you can sync flash at full power at 1/4000 sec.

Excellent review, despite just 2 hands and the camera in the frame; just received mine today; however, I do take issue on your criticism of the stabilization. I have used the A6500 with the 100-400 G master lens and when zoomed in on a stable subject, such as a bird ,handheld at 400mm (600mm equivalent) for a couple of seconds, it is a little shaky too. But in those situations you are probably shooting stills at 1000/sec and who shoots video at 600mm handheld anyway. Just saying..

Just bought one online from Wilkinson Cameras in the UK and they have an Easter Promotion on which has a £350.00 discount and 2 years free Warranty. Well worth a look if you are wavering about buying one. I’m very happy to have found this out on going to checkout as it isn’t advertised on the site when you click on the camera.

One of the reasons I bought this camera in 2023, apart from the insane AF, incredible zoom and stellar image quality is the fact that it DOES NOT have the damned side hinged pull out flippy flappy screen. Unless you want to Vlog or take endless selfies then this tilt screen is way faster, way less obtrusive and so inconspicuous.

Good points, well made. I tested this camera out at a camera show recently and it looks impressive, fast AF & that 24fps for stills is awesome! The only minus points for me are no fully-articulating full featured touchscreen, no built-in ND filters (the Panasonic FZ2500 has that) and as you say, it would be good to have the 5 axis stabilisation. I would like you to post some sample photos & videos to show the quality using various settings.

Hi...I want to use my RX10 MK4 to video some model airplanes in flight and in 1080p im struggling with understanding all the different focus modes / options available as per the help guide. What i want to achieve is to be able to manually turn the lens zoom ring while viewing my subject ( ie a model airplane in flight ) via the viewfinder and maintain focus as i zoom in and out to keep the model in shot. These models move at different speeds in flight so its important to keep them both in frame and in focus. i suppose its kinda similar to a bird in flight so im hoping you can help.
@CentralFloridaOutdoors
@CentralFloridaOutdoors 6 лет назад
You can only use the Video mode to do video. If you have the mode dial in S or A you will get a message stating it is invalid in that mode when you push the video button. If you have 4k selected or 120p selected in your video mode setting and go back to photo mode you are stuck in standard steady shot and have to go back and change your video settings to be able to use active or active intelligent stabilization in photo mode. That is a pain in the ass if you are shooting video and stills in the same shoot because you need the advanced stabilization beyond 300 mm.

Thanks for your video! I'm wondering what settings you recommend for filming flying owls? I'm working on a biology/biomimicry project involving owls. The flight chamber is a bit dark, so I'm going to try to light parts with soft boxes. Just wondering what settings you would use with the sony rx10 iv. Thanks! *And trying to get the best possible slow motion footage
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
nobody can recommend settings for you based only on your description. I have been shooting car racing for 3 years with an original RX10. the races start around sunset and continue well into the night so it gets dark even with artificial lights around the track. I shoot at 30 fps and try to keep my shutter no faster than 1/60 of a second regardless of the lighting conditions. I set ISO to auto with a range of 125 to 1600 so the camera automatically gets more sensitive as my lighting conditions get darker. one track I work at has very poor lighting conditions so I will sometimes increase my shutter to 1/30 of a second. you can not go any slower than 1/30 of a second because of the 30fps frame rate because it will start looking like a jerky animation. anyways, aside from my settings and conditions... basically you just need to experiment. the live preview screen shows you what your results will look like before you ever press the record button. just remember that you can not make your shutter speed slower than your frame rate. you are probably safe to go up to ISO 3200 but I would not like to push it any higher than that. good luck.

Just subscribed. I am a birdwatcher and went down the route of Nikon D7200 and Tamron AO22 150-600 G2 and after 6 months of trying I realised its just not for me. I’ve always had Bridge Cameras from when Olympus brought out a 10x around 2006 then from there I’ve had LUMIX FZ18 and FZ45, Canon SX35S and finally LUMIX FZ72. So the Nikon and Tamron are being traded in on the Sony RX10 MkIV as it looks like it will do it all, the Phase AF and blisteringly fast 24fps will be great for birding and I can get into slo-mo video as well.

Agree...your HFR short was impressive. And don't agree with your statement when someone "thinks" smartphone cameras outperform This kind. We've been on the pro-cameras for a long time. "they" just don't. we already have the camera stuff on our blood. (that happens to me with someone and he insisted on that issue even with me trying to explain. weir thing was how firmly he was on that aspect...at the end I just let it go but with a massive "?" on my face) ; ) ...I remember how "every some other" only threw crap on Sony for having a touch screen...and as for today....they seems to love it (on their brands) : |D. Thanks for the update TDD. See you around.

You did not mention that there is no ND filter. Sorry to see that go. The RX10 MIV sounds compelling, but it will be hard for me to consider, since the RX10 M II I bought in Sept 2015 failed me three times, needing repairs. Good thing I spent the $250 for 3 years of coverage, because at $400 a pop to repair it, it would have been useless by now. It just failed me for the third time on a trip. All the buttons on the back just stop working. It still turns on and off, and takes pictures at whatever I have it set at - a true point and shoot camera, for $1300. How long will the Mark IV last? And what will I do when mine fails me for the 4th time, after my warranty runs out? Anyone else have issues with theirs? Also, there is a glitch in the zoom at about 130 mm - very noticeable when watching. It seems to have gone away in the Mark IV.

Have you owned A6000 or A7 and wanting to know if the RX 10 new sensor, despite a 1" sensor, beats the A6000 or A7 in terms of low light noise? I'm not expecting RX10 1" sensor to beat A7 FF or even APSC. I'm thinking to replace A6000 with A6500 OR keep A6000 and buy RX10MK 4. Thanks in advance.

how can a 1" sensor beat an aps-c sensor when low light is the test?
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
it may not beat a larger sensor in terms of low light but I would take an RX10 over the A6500 for sure unless size /portability is your main concern.

The comment has virtually nothing to do with your video but here goes: My biggest complaint with The Sony interchangeab;e lens camera I now own is the lack of decent instruction (book). The manual, even the one on the cd, is not that great and the two books I've found are even worse. I'm interested in this as a travel camera but I really want someone to write clear concise manual for it. So I guess my question to you is: is this camera as hard and counter intuitive as other reviewers claim? Is it really all that hard to use. You've already said that you can just put on auto and does a very nice job, but suppose you want to play around a little. How hard is it really to use?
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
it sounds like you must be a beginner at photography. I remember when I got my first dslr camera I was disappointed that the manual didnt tell me how to operate the camera... but then I learned photography, took a couple courses and suddenly cameras made sense. I have the original RX10 now and I can tell you that it is no more complicated than any other camera, assuming you understand photography. every camera now is loaded with so many features that in my opinion most of it is gimmicks. all you need to know is how to control your settings (shutter, aperture, ISO) for the conditions you have. my favorite way to shoot if I am just walking around as a tourist is to set the camera to shutter priority at 1/200 of a sec, set ISO to auto with a range of 125-400 and let the camera control the aperture as it needs to. this will cover the vast majority of conditions you will encounter during daylight but prevents the camera from doing odd things it might to just in auto mode. anyways, it sounds like you should take a photography course to understand the basic principles.

Well for one, that's a 10.3 Mega pixel camera, not to mention the years that camera has on it. I'm sure the Mk4 would out perform it by a long shot.
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
I have been using the original RX10 for 3 years now... the results are so great with the Zeiss lens and 10Mp that you almost end up not caring about the smaller sensor size. if they put an APS-C sensor in here it would force the camera to be even larger.
@CoreyMathery
@CoreyMathery 6 лет назад
RedroomStudios I personally get the fact that this camera would be awesome. I’m just considering the fact that this camera might not perform as well in low light. I would personally take a bigger camera to get the aps-c sensor. I want this to be my one and only camera I have with me, and it’s a tough decision to make. I know it would be awesome 90% of the time. I’m just thinking about that 10% where it might not perform like I want it to for $1400. Just my thought, and please do understand, I do still think this camera would be fabulous!
@angelisone
@angelisone 6 лет назад
If this has a 24-400 with F2.8, then you and I would buy. But at F4.0, that is too slow once zoomed beyond 85mm. We didn't like the RX10 III because the AF sucks due to af contrast not the best ATG AF Phase/Contrast circuits.

true. I have used the original RX10 for 3 years now... for both photography and video. ..... I would never pay over $1000.00 for a fixed-lens camera! For that kind of money ($1700.00) I would get a Panasonic Lumix GX8 and a compact zoom lens. At least then you have the option of adding different lenses to your collection!
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
when you have a 24-600 fixed lens the only thing you are really missing is extreme wide angle. I have the original RX10 that is only 24-200 equivalent and I think I paid $1100 for it brand new. using it mainly for shooting video of car racing I have made over $20k in just a few years. that camera has paid for itself many times over. I agree that up front that price seems like a lot but until you have used this camera extensively and really learned to appreciate what it can do, it's a misguided judgement. I have owned 3 dslr's previous to this and none of them have had the image quality of the RX10. the Zeiss lens makes all the difference.

In auto mode it won't focus on a bird's head. Video zoom is way to noisy grinding, clunking buzzing affair. I wish that I had not bought this. Also Nikon p900 has a quieter zoom lens and far better image stabilisation. I am not happy with my purchase. Not even a little bit.

Still a drawback. Not compatible with ATG Gold, Profoto & Phottix TTL strobes. Strange those three brands work on SLT & E-mount having MIS. This world's first overpriced point & shoot camera that has MIS- will not work, why?
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
because this camera is not aimed at people doing studio flash photography. simple. overpriced is a highly subjective opinion.
@angelisone

Today, children, beginners and amateurs want handy cameras/low light and zooming power. The art of photography is gone. They have been brainwashed into thinking that this tiny sensor is good over reduction cameras like 1/2 to 1/1. If you are lazy, use a cell phone or has the money to burn go with this for around $2,000.00. Then get upset when Sony come out with a new model with 21 months. Low light camera is useless without flash or strobe, if you need fine prints beyond F5.6.
@RedroomStudios
@RedroomStudios 6 лет назад
you are irrational and a snob. I have the original version of this camera after owning 3 dslr's previously. what people want is a camera that is highly capable in a small easy to carry format that shoots great quality video without having to bother changing lenses. and that is exactly why I came to this model. Tired of carrying a clunky camera bag and constantly changing between 3 lenses all the time, getting dust in the sensor etc. yes, this is not a professional level camera, but it has a top quality lens and can do everything in one package. not everyone has the same priorities as you and that is why there are hundreds of cameras on the market. it is idiotic to complain that this camera isnt what you want / need when it isnt trying to be those things.
