The Sony Cybershot RX100 is one of the best series of pocket digital cameras ever made. From the very first DSC-RX100 Mark 1 in 2012, through the current DSC-RX100 VII (7) released in 2019, we detail the major differences between these models. Sony has continually added cool features to RX100 updated versions like 4k video, enhanced autofocus, and an increasingly superb lens design. RU-vidr Marques Brownlee loved his RX100 II camera so much that he made a full review on it and called it “the best pocket camera ever made”. For years now, Vloggers and travelers around the world have used the RX100 camera to compose stunning pictures and impressive video. Later in the video, we examine actual high res photos that I took with the RX100 II, and why any of the RX100 line can still be a good value in 2023. Provided you find it for the best price! I go over what to look for and be cautious of in buying a used DSC-RX100, DSC-RX100 II, DSC-RX100 III, DSC-RX100 IV, DSC-RX100 V, DSC-RX100 VI, and DSC-RX100 VII point and shoot camera. #camerareviews #sony #photography #photography #ad

The LCD has a plastic screen protector glued down - it's got a layer of anti reflective coating with gets damaged very easily. It's also easy to peel off and put a new protector on. When I buy second hand sony cameras, I go for the ones with the "worn LCDs" but otherwise in good condition because a lot of people get put off and it goes much, much cheaper. Then you can switch out the protector and it looks pretty much new.

Very true @JimlBoblJones- this is common across most of their last 10 years of a variety of models. I have removed the layer on a number of NEX series camera bodies, I just didn't have time to get into it in this video.

I’m planning on purchasing the RX 100 VII to lighten my load. I have multiple Canon bodies and too many lenses. I rarely shoot with my 70 - 200 anymore. And the shots I shoot at 200 aren’t as important as my wide angle shots. So out with the long lens and into the pocket with the RX100 VII. As far as camera usage goes, I agree with you. Get the one that covers the most bases for your needs. My full frames will cover 99.% of my work and the RX100 VII will cover that 1%. The best part is that with the RX100 VII, I’ll start shooting my motorcycle trips and forest shots. Heck, it’s so inconspicuous I’ll be able to shoot in areas where people get triggered by a full frame. The bottom line is I’ll be able to enjoy shooting because it won’t feel like work. I just want to have fun and it’s worth the price of entry to the photographers playground.

How timely for this video! I just bought a III and VII and unsure which to keep. Initial comparisons with same settings have shown that the image on VII is brighter (at least on screen, not mentioned in specs either) but VII does struggle more at night. I'm honestly not sure if the extra zoom is worth the loss of light. Will keep playing with them both before I make a decision (or maybe try out the V). Keep up the good work!
@pricklypearcamera

That's awesome, I believe the VII has a better LCD resolution by a fair measure VS the III, which may explain screen brightness and added detail. Have you used the mic input yet on the VII?

I had the RX100m3 wayback 2017 and all its photos are still relevant now. I've had a D750, A6400, XT-3, D7200 cameras before, they all have been replaced over and over again but the RX100 is the last one to go. Rx100 is a very good point and shoot, you can just wear it in your neck and forget about it until you need it, specially if you have kids where DSLR is already hassle to bring. They say the best camera is the one you have in your hand at that moment, but in reality we don't bring a DSLR because its too big and you need to store it inside the bag from time to time.

I purchased the RX100 in 2012 and still use it as a hiking and travel camera. It has always been reliable. I prefer having a flat screen as it isn't another possible breakage issue. I have other equipment that can do video so there's no reason to "update" to a newer RX100 model. The image quality is very good. Remember it's the photographer not the camera that's responsible for the results.

I have the original RX100. The RX100, and all following cameras in that series have a fundamental flaw. The placement of the tripod 1/4"-20 screw hole makes it impossible to replace the battery or the memory card while the camera is on a tripod. It even blocks the HDMI port. The other issue with this camera is that the lens is only sharp at the widest zoom. Any zoom in, and the picture gets soft. At fully wide though, it is very sharp. The 30 minute limit on video has bitten me far too often. That being said, I have not found anything better to replace it with. I'm still using it as my primary portable camera.

@pricklypearcamera
@pricklypearcamera 5 месяцев назад
Your VII has 357 focus points vs only 25 on the RX100 II. So for any shot with lots of details/variability will be better covered by the VII, but for simple shooting, I have found the RX100 II (was my primary a number of years ago) to be more than sufficient for every day use. Also the low light ISO is slightly better on the II VS VII. Bummer the VII doesn't have a hotshoe!

Hi, I’ve got a canon 700d but I’m currently looking for a more compact camera for everyday use and do some travelling with (Iceland and Switzerland this year at least). My main focus is the photography aspect but of course I want the videos to be good as well and currently I’m torn between the Canon G7x Mark III and the Sony RX100 VII, so I would like to know if you’ve got experience with both or just the Sony?
@pricklypearcamera
@pricklypearcamera Год назад
Hi! Yes, I have used the G7X I, II, and III cameras. To preface my response, I think both the G7X III and RX100 VII both produce great image quality, as both have 1" sensors, but I do prefer the Sony if price point is not an issue (the sony is nearly 80% more expensive than the G7X III currently). In terms of still image capabilities between the two, one of the bigger differences is that the Canon lens is 100mm equivalent max whereas the RX100 VII is 200MM, so double the optical range (helpful if you are taking nature shots, or longer distance zoom shots). I really like that the RX100 VII has a built in viewfinder (I use it almost exclusively vs the LCD screen), and the G7X III does not have a viewfinder. Both the G7X III and RX100 VII have mic inputs which is really a must if you are shooting any sort of video (you can find movo, rode, or other similar inexpensive mics if you don't have one that will greatly improve audio quality). For video shooting, I have noticed that the toggle zoom of the Sony tends to result in "smoother" shots vs the Canon which can "jump" a bit when zooming. Both cameras due to their compact size and lack of real cooling vs larger camera or camcorder do tend to run hot when shooting 4k video. Something to take note of. If you are shooting in 1080p, I haven't noticed nearly as much issues with heat. I hope this was helpful! Kevin
@janwilson9485
@janwilson9485 Год назад
The sony is great - Ive got the rx100V. Its major downside in relation to the Canon is its not easy to change settings without having to go through settings. Also manual is difficult due to fiddly controls. I find I cant take photos without taking the camera away from my eye to access settings unless its on an auto setting which is pointless (you can get cheaper small cameras if you just want to use auto. I think the later models may have a touch screen so may be a lot better in this respect. So the canon is bigger but more usable. If you dont mind having a single focal length of either 28mm or 40mm (full frame equivilence), the Ricoh griii or griiix is far better - its a similar size but has a much larger crop sensor, IBIS and a sensor with no anti aliasing filter which when matched with their excellent lens gives incredibly sharp results. The Ricoh is so easy to use, even one handed with all settings easily accessible - so far more practical. However, the Ricohs have no flash and no viewfinder (you can get an optical viewfinger as a 'framing tool' as an accessory that fits on the hot shoe). Hope this helps.

@pricklypearcamera
@pricklypearcamera Год назад
Thats a great one! But, as you pointed out does struggle with audio. There’s no real “tech” solution, but if you are vlogging in a more permanent location, you could invest jn trying to sound-treat the room you are in with curtains/acoustic panels, etc.

I want something with a good quality (at least "fine" to print "sometimes"). I know it's on the edge of impossible (at least from actual perspective) but is there any RX that can handle it? I thought about LUMIX GM1 with 12-32 mm, but .. I don't know?? 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀😅😅
@pricklypearcamera
@pricklypearcamera Год назад
The real time tracking on the RX100 VII is really quite good, you can adjust in menu and select a target frame and it would focus track the bird as it moved in the frame. I haven't personally used the GM1, so couldn't comment on that, but have seen a lot of satisfied users of it.
@pentagramyt417
@pentagramyt417 Год назад
@@pricklypearcamera The problem I found in GM1 is a 5-7 frames in buffer, so you need to wait a 7-15 seconds to clear the buffer. That's.. specific thing. The pros are it's 4/3 sensor, but the cons are few. I heared the people are happy and it's really hard to complain because it's very old camera and very cheap for today standards. RX is more compact, but I am so sad I can not test it out... 😐😐Thanks!

The sony can do it but is obviously limited by the tiny sensor, particularly at dawn and dusk when a lot of landscape photos get taken. Full Frame is, in my opinion better for landscape photography but can be a bit cumbersome for walking far with so I often try with my Sony RX100V or with my Ricoh griii which has a 28mm lens, crop sensor but no viewfinder or multi angle screen.
