Hi, having watched a bunch of reviews on this camera, I just wanted to thank you for the time, consideration, effort and immense amount of pertinent information you put into your reviews. Your reviews in general stand head and shoulders above the majority of others. Thanks again, this review was very helpful in my decision to buy the M3 over the M4.
+Maarten Heilbron Does the flipscreen work while recording a video also is there a time limit to how long you can record videos?? What editing software do you use to edit your videos? Can you please do a video on Sony RX100M3 vs Sony CyberShot RX100 IV and tell us which camera you think is better out of them or you can tell me that in a comment.
I bought mine almost a year ago after i watched this video and few others, but i totally havent explore it yet and here i am again, being shocked by how much features it has that i do not know of. Thank you
I just bought one last July 2014 and I must say, watching you explore and use its different features inspired me to go try explore my Rx100m3 even more. I'm a novice/noob btw. Thanks for the video!
Greggy Felipe Thanks for the compliment! There's a lot to explore - read the manual (the long one) and go try stuff, that's the nice thing about digital. Experimenting costs nothing. Have fun.
Great job, subscribed. This is the best review for this camera I've seen. I hate when people talk only about specs the entire time and don't show any pictures to back it up.
Rustbar Thanks for your kind words. I hate that too - particularly when they sit there and just turn the camera around like a Rubic's cube. That's why I make my video reviews.
Probably one of the best RU-vid reviews I've ever seen! Excellent work ***** I feel like I was there with you during your beautiful trips. Thank you sir :)
I agree, great, this is so much more than just a review, it's so instructive that I would love having you make video manuals for all the rest of the settings the RX100 has and how to use them … because even not really being a photo rookie, learning to use this camera will take me a lot of time! So take the challenge and make an instruction film. If Sony can't make it, they ought to support you!
rytmolja Thanks so much, that's very kind. I'll think about that - but I would encourage you to learn on your own. Understanding the settings is one thing, using them effectively to take great photos is another. I just keep learning, and yes, it does take time.
Im a bit high while watching this, but this man is amazing. Not only he gives a great overall review of the camera, but also gives you a few tips about starting as a photographer. Thank you
Excellent review. Thank you for not getting on the spec rant bandwagon and rather focusing on how one might use it in real world scenario. I got mine on the day it was released, played with it exclusively for a month or so before passing it on to my daughter as a replacement to her OM-D E-M5. I bought/downloaded every app available from Sony, but feel that none really offer anything fantastic---kind of gimmicky and perhaps more suitable for novices. Unlike you, I do have a bit of axe to grind with Sony for not providing, or fixing it in the latest firmware update, a disable switch for the EVF power off function. Cheers and keep up the good work!
To me this was the most useful review of a camera ever. You addressed all the questions I had and shot in situations I would. The end with the snail was the most funny as I did that in the past... actually I have videos of different types/colours/sizes of snails. Thank you for info and keep it up, I am hitting the "subscribe" button!
Sarlota That is very kind, thanks for your comment. Everyone thought I was strange taking pictures of snails - Kim kept apologizing to people cycling by as I'm down on the ground composing.
***** I know the feeling :-D My partner is complaining that we spend out relationship on graveyards because I do a huge project on them. But what can we do when the muse call? Just one question I might have about the camera : How does the geo tagging work? P.S. Just in case you wanted to see some of my weirdness: www.k88.photography/
Sarlota Thanks for the link. The camera doesn't have a gps, and there's no longer a Sony gps external device. I'm sure there are third party solutions.
It is supposed to be done via sony mobile app you download on your phone and the locations are transfered from the phone to pictures via wi-fi. I used to have that on my Canon S110 and it was pretty accurate so I wondered if you used it and if it was accurate.... Never mind - I think I will succumb to this camera anyway and might let you know later this year. ;-) *****
great review, and I would say it's more like a quick tutorial of how to use rx100m3 in 10 mins, just got the camera 2 weeks ago, and really love all the features, functionalities and image quality it delivers. As I'm still very new to photography, I learned a lot from your review. THANKS, Maarten.
Kevins93cobra Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad to hear it worked out for you - that's exactly the right use of this camera. Now I can't wait to try the M4 announced today with an amazing sensor and 4K video.
Great review, both interesting, engaging and very informative. I like the way you pack so much detail into such a short video. Great editing, visual variety which holds interest and just makes the video fly, and overall excellent production values. Thank you for posting.
Thanks so much for posting a very practical and hands-on review. Two weeks into research about this camera and yours is the most impressive video so far. Such a welcoming change after seeing countless RX100M3 "measurebator" comparisons.
Just discovered your channel. Great review. It seems like a very impressive camera. I've been shooting professionally for 30 years. I started shooting with the Hitachi FP22, which weighed 25+ lbs, just for the camera! You attached it thru multi-pin cables to a 3/4" recorder (20+ lbs), which recorded onto 20 minute analog tape cassettes! But it was such a huge advance that everything changed almost overnight. It was the end of TV stations shooting and editing the daily news on film.) It was my first taste of what has been a constantly evolving industry driven by amazing technological advances. And this camera looks like another potential game changer. It reminds me of when I first saw Sony's PD150. I was hired to shoot a street level documentary of the Salt Lake City Olympics. It was hard to believe that it could be as good as it was technically, and that you could shoot high quality professional work with it because of its size and form factor. But once we tricked them out with wide angle lens adapters, Sennheiser shotguns, and critically important, figured out that a small photography monopod acted like a poor man's Steadicam they were a revelation. This camera looks like the beginning of another wave. It seems almost ridiculously cheap and small for the outstanding video results you seemed to easily achieve. What do you think? Will it's imagery hold up to colour grading and professional digital editing? Do the impressive hardware/software advances you highlighted compensate enough for the inherent difficulties of trying to achieve professional results under real world conditions with what looks like a toy? I would love to have another tool like that in my kit - if it delivers what it seems to promise. Is this camera ready for prime time?
pe8er8 Clearly your experience indicates a willingness to experiment - so I'd say go for it. It does have some limitations, but remember that the 1 inch sensor is much larger than nearly all camcorders. But you ask specifically about "prime time" - so I'd say no - acknowledging that none of the cameras you mention were ready either, but "prime time" and broadcast quality adjusted to accomodate the flexibility those cameras offered. You will not find the RX100 lacking in quality, you may find it lacking in pro-video features. There are no profiles, no gamma adjustments, etc. Grading may be a challenge, but you won't have any issues editing the XAVC-S format. My first portable video experience was with a Sony portapak - although I don't remember the model number. It recorded black and white video on 1/2" open reel tapes, but it enabled us to break free of the studio and do many interesting things.
Hello India - please say hello to my many friends there. There are many things I aspire to - but to be called cool is a compliment I greatly appreciate, thanks!
OMG you know a lot about taking pictures, so nice! i just ordered the rx100m3 and i hope that 1 day i will be able to use the camera the way u do in this video. :-)
Another great review. I decided to buy the camera tonight for my Paris trip. I have an A6000 already but it is still really too big for a pocket and I don't want to carry a bag, extra lenses, etc. Your photography is fantastic. If I get get half the output out of the camera you did I will be very happy. Thanks!
Fabulous review - just discovered your RU-vid efforts and was really impressed. Nice amount of detail on the products and especially as it was in real world scenarios. Thanks for your time and careful reviewing
Great video Maarten. I have a humble budget (USD 500) and I'm thinking either to buy a RX100M1 or the alpha5100 w/kit lens. In one hand RX100 has a nice glass with f1.8 and portability vantage, and in the other hand a5100 has a much larger sensor, the a6000 focus system, WiFi, and isn't much bigger at a lower price. I'm interested in good quality image, low light capabilities, in a good constructed body. Which do you think is best? Thanks for your time.
I also need to thank you for this video. Still struggling to order M3, but your video helped a lot to at least decide about which RX100's "Mark" to select. Must appreciate the whole content, profesionally showing the UI via HDMI.
Even if it´s pretty old, this review of the rx100 mk3 is better then almost every other review out there because the most of the reviewers here on youtube focus mainly on "vlogging" - a thing photographers don´t do. Sooo - thank you!
I'm impressed with your knowledge and skill, I'm debating what version rx100 I should purchase, I've saved your video ,as my go to rx100 101 study guide. Thanks , and I agree yours is the best Rx video I've seen.
Tee P Thanks for the kind words, that's appreciated. I think they're all good choices, buy the one you can afford, or the one that has the upgrade feature (like wifi or viewfinder) that you need.
I appreciate your kind words. In video, if you are shooting 4K and inputting HD, you can zoom up to 200% with no apparent loss of quality. For images, that's a subjective decision. It depends on the final output - for example, depending on the amount of zoom it might not be noticeable on a web page, but it would be noticeable on a large print.
I like your reviews!! For this camera what memory card do you need for photos and videos? Do you need two different memory cards for them both (photos, and videos)?
EMAlife Thanks for the kind words, I always enjoy hearing from interested viewers. Standard SD cards work in the RX100M3, you only need one. Faster cards (class 10) will recover faster in burst shooting. If you want to shoot video in XAVC-S you'll need SD-HC, which would be my recommendation for both still and video shooting.
Great review, just purchased a Mk2. No need for EVF . Amazing camera. Great for carry around everyday use. Both my DSLRs have taken back stage now. I have a Sony Xperia Z2 phone and it connects via NFC effortlessly.
Loved this review! Im planning to do under water photography and still cant make up my mind between the m2 and m3. The M3 is nice for the 180 screen and view finder but thats not something I could use underwater. Aside from those, is there any clear advantages at using the M3 over the M2?
A fantastic review. Your demonstrations, complete with comparable results for me to see, was perfect - it all made it very clear. This is a camera that was in my 'possible' list, along with the Panasonic Lumix LX100. I am still leaning towards the LX100 but the choice has been made more difficult having watched your review ;-). Great stuff!
I have to say that as far camera reviews go, this is the benchmark. Forget about the camera being reviewed; the techniques and methods of showcasing the cameras features should be the standard!
Fantastic review, grazie! And looks like an interesting trip you had. I'm an experienced beginner. When I last used cameras, they were all SLR, before the children were born. Now they've grown up and I am going to reboot my photography hobby. Your review convinced me this camera has a lot of DSLR quality options for beginners to learn. Also important for me is that it easily fits in the pocket. Cheers!
Hi Maarten! I've been looking at many reviews for this camera and the Canon G7x. I am quite split as I see that the Sony overall is a better camera, but the Canon will do essentially all that I need it to. I want to use the camera I get mainly for video. Which would you reccomend?
supersayenred When someone has trouble deciding, and there's not one feature that clearly recommends one over the other, I generally advise that they choose based on price and/or appearance. However, for video, I'd choose the RX100M3.
***** Thank you for the response Maarten! I've decided to go for the Canon G7x although the Sony seems better I'd rather spend the extra money on other things. See ya!
Another great review Maarten. I traded my Canon t2i for a Sony a6000 a couple of weeks ago and your review played a huge role in my decision. I am beyond happy with the camera and couldn't believe incredible features and IQ in such a small package. Your reviews are always informative, honest and personal. Its great to hear the opinions of a fellow Torontonian!
***** One that's available to you (I shop at Henry's in Toronto) One that's comfortable for you (the advantage of going to a local retailer) One that's the right size for the camera. In the video I'm using the peak design, but it's actually a little too large for the RX100. A smaller one, like one I have on my A6000 from Roots might have been better. There are lots to choose from - I likely don't have enough experience with the wide variety available to make a solid recommendation. That said, I do prefer a wrist strap for smaller cameras over a neck band - which make you look like a tourist.
Maarten very nice review ! I'd say the best review of this little piece I've seen. I know you own the a6000 and nex6, so comparing in picture quality what can you say?. I have canon 6d and 70d with L glass and I know this RX100 doesn't produce same quality, however I need a pocket size camera for traveling and carrying 6d or 70d is sometimes tired. Would you recommend this camera in picture quality? appreciate your thoughts.. ( I like nex6 and a6000 but they are not pocket size )
Mike guitar Considering the size of the camera, the size of the sensor and the size of the lens, the images are astounding - I've blown up low light images to 24x36 and am very pleased. Check out the sample images and review at dpreview. But keep your L glass - I own a 24-105 and it's the best lens I've ever used, but I don't travel with it.
Very nice and detailed review Maarten... do you have Dutch roots by the way? Saw you on another review on the Dutch island that I live on too; Curacao... Again, well reviewed. I own this camera and still have lots to discover!
Thanks for the kind words. With a name like Maarten you shouldn't have to ask ... I enjoyed my trip to Curacao - it appears in my NEX6 review and in a review of the Santa Barbara Resort. As the weather changes in Canada, we look south with envy.
I suddenly click your video and I found it very helpful but I hope I can learn the beautiful function easily.. Recently I found myself interesting in Photography and This camera gift is perfect timing.
Thanks for making the vid! Btw, for filming youtube videos, would you recommend recording at 60p, 30p, or 24p on the RXM3? It's currently my cam for all my vids and I've been tweaking the settings to try to get the 'best' quality 🙏
Casper Nielsen That's very kind, thank you. It is a good upgrade, but I maintain the most excellent memories of my time with the original RX100 camera.
Excellent review. I own the camera but learned a lot about its functionality that I didn't know existed. I will be going back to this review for more tips.
Out of curiosity, did you have any focusing issues when recording video when shooting selfie video? I noticed that some video samples on RU-vid with that issue. Perhaps it's user error?
Joel Gaspar I always have focussing issues with selfies - most cameras don't recognize my face. If you're aware of some of the peculiarities of the auto focus system, you should be able to master the self-focus. On the other hand, since you know exactly how far the camera is going to be - manual focus would be a good option.
Is there a big difference between the new hx90 and the rx100iii? Planning for a new one. I am a beginner. I have also been checkin out the Canon g7x. Any thoughts? Thank you!
Ann Bos I haven't had the chance to try the HX90, so can't offer first-hand observations. From the specification, the HX90 offers a much longer zoom, but uses a smaller sensor. If zoom is important to you, go with the HX90, for quality I'd prefer the RX100 - although for a beginner either would be fine. The G7X (same sensor and zoom range as the RX100) offers a slightly different set of features - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_KvXlzXRivw.html. Hope this helps.
What an awesome review ! Your review is the best one i've ever seen in my entire life ! And i know what i'm talking about because i'm owning a RU-vid channel (only in french, sorry..) ! It's so complete and simple ! Thank you so much and good continuation to you ! Greetings from France !
Thank you for comprehensive review, and I enjoyed the extensive use in various modes/scenes. I also liked the pictures on the wall you showed us. Do you sell your pictures and can one make money from taking photos with the Sony RX100M3?
Jim Siriotis Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate that. I don't sell my pictures - and have no idea how one goes about doing that. I suppose that one can make money from taking pictures with any camera.
The best reviews on cameras on RU-vid, great job. Can you see any improvements in picture quality between version III and IV? I cannot decide which to buy. Stills are mine priority.
Thanks very much for the kind words. Please check my flickr collections, or the reviews on dpreview for picture quality comparison. There was a new faster sensor introduced in the IV, but the difference in quality is minor. I'm sure you'd be happy with either.
Thanks for the review! I have always wanted to buy this but the price was too high at that time so I keep waiting. This price of this is much lower now but there are new models like the canon g7x mark 2 and the panasonic lx10 with similar selling price. Among these three models which one would you recommend? thanks!
I can recommend all three - but I would likely choose the Sony, although I'm not sure I can quantify that selection. As I say, choose with your wallet, your hand (which fits/feels best) and your heart.
Very nice Reviw, very detailed, congrats!! I do have a 2012 Sony NEX-5N (Mirrorless Alpha series.) that I like a lot, but I'm considering an upgrade for a newer model and maybe go to a smaller model without losing picture quality.....Maarten, do you think the RX100M3 would be a good option or I would loose much quality? thanks.
Vecna Ravenloft It is a good option. It's a compromise with the smaller sensor, but I have been very pleased with photos I've taken with the RX100M1, M2 and M3.
***** Nice Maarten, Thanks. My only personal experience with the Sony compact cameras is a T series waterproof that I own, but obviously It's not suitable for comparison :-) Well, I think probably the best idea is to keep the NEX-5N, buy the M3 and after personal test, maybe put the M3 as my "main" Camera instead of the NEX-5N. Best Regards!
***** Besides the 3.5-5.6/18-55 that came with the camera I have a Sony 2.8/16 (macro) but I will be honest that I don't use the macro that much. Yep, It's a good idea to keep the NEX-5N for some specific situations and the flexibility of the lenses, but I'm definitely turned to buy the M3, and considering the review, turn the M3 in my 90% time option!!! Congrats again for the very good review and thanks for the replies. I will keep following your videos!
The most detail RX100 M3 reviews I've seen! I was wondering if you would be able to do a review of the Panasonic FZ1000. I'm looking for the best (cheapest) 4K solution, but I was wondering if I should just settle for 1080p with the RX10 because of the price drop and ND filters.
Average Adversary Thanks for the kind words. I'll put the FZ1000 on my "to-do" list. I haven't reviewed the RX10. If you can wait 6-9 months I'm pretty sure there will be a much larger selection of 4K cameras, which might quickly become the video standard for still cameras.
Well I was only going to wait 3 months or so and get myself a nice Christmas gift...but I will try to be patient and see what the future holds for 4K cameras. Thanks for the reply. :D
***** hmm.. mostly gm1 slower kit lens at 3.5-5.6 even though sharpness is not bad. I also have the 20mm 1.7 but AF is slow. I was tempted to buy the leica 15mm 1.7 prime, which has aperture ring and fast, but at $500 bucks, I could almost just get the LX100 or Rx100m3 instead.
Really enjoyed your review of Sony RX100M3. But...while I love taking pix and feel I will enjoy quality of large sensor size, I'm not sure I'll use all manual settings etc. Is there another, less complex camera you might recommend for someone like myself? Thank you.
Joel Smith If the RX100 is not to your liking, maybe a camera from the Nikon 1 series, which shares the same sensor? I've done a review of the S2: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IT7qw0G472Q.html and I'm working on a J5 review.
Pierre YEPES In my mind, the decision is between the Canon G7X (on my to-do list) and the Rx100M3. In a roundabout way, I think that provides the answer.
Hi there, I really love your reviews on camera. It's not long and boring like most of the reviews out there. Anyway I'm looking for a camera that is easy to use, for travelling, just for casual snaps but provides good quality photos.. I've watched your review on Sony a5100, but after watching your review on this RX100 M3 , I'm confused lol. So between a5100 and RX100 M3 which one do you recommend??? Thanks
Marissa Kulai That is so kind of you to say. Thank you! For a small travel camera, I'd grab the RX100 without a second thought. It's small enough to pocket, works great in auto mode and yet has tremendous flexibility if you need.
Maartten, I just stumbled across your excellent camera reviews. You remind me of Rick Steves, except instead of travel, you provide great insight into the camera's you review. I also watched your review of the Panasonic Lumix LX100. I can appreciate that the above video is for the RX100 M3 and not the M4, but I am really struggling to decide which is a better camera for me. I am looking for a more travel friendly camera than my Nikon D750. Without going into details of what I want out of the camera, I was curious what your opinion is. While not entirely similar cameras, after reviewing the RX100 M3 and the LX100, which do you like better? From what you know of the M4, are any of the changes to the M4 game changers (e.g. now being 4k)?
+Michael Gall It seems you have answered this to some degree, so I would also like to ask if you felt either of the two models seemed more durable? had better image stabilization? performed better in low light? Also I have heard and read some negative feedback about the Sony menu system, but from your review of the LX100, the myriad of menu features also seems a bit daunting, after using both cameras for some time, do you find either easier to use?
+Michael Gall Thank you for your very kind words - that's exalted company. For the last four years (for each version of the RX100, I've been fortunate enough to have the review align with a holiday - and I'm so pleased with the photos - it is the perfect small and powerful travel camera that's great in all situations. I think if someone would put both in front of me and told me I could take one, I'd probably take the LX100, but I"m not sure I could quantify that. My review of the RX100M4 is nearly complete - so you should see it this week.
+Michael Gall to some degree ... I didn't have them side by side and I don't do baseline testing (dpreview does). More durable, likely the Panasonic. Better image stabilization, Sony has always excelled here. I know it's fashionable to hit on the Sony menu system, but for most people it just comes down to familiarity - I've yet to find any camera that I feel has a menu system that's either intuitive or well-organized. What Sony has going for it is better error messaging, Panasonic dims out unavailable selections, so you can never figure out what you need to do. Each time I use a Panasonic there seems to be at least one menu selection that I just can't unlock. I'm not sure I'd classify either as easy to use, both have good quick menu systems, but.
+Maarten Heilbron Thanks so much for your insight, I look forward to seeing your review of the Sony RX100 M4. If you ever decide to vacation/visit Split, Croatia, I'd love to meet and get some tips.
I'm planning on buying Sony Rx but can't choose between RX100M1, RX100M2, or RX100M3. Along the line, Canon G7x is also a good option as well. I need help on finding a good portable camera for videoing. Any suggestions?
Earlybird Hawj All four are good choices - I really loved the M1 and although the rest have added improvements, I still think it's a solid choice (particularly considering the price). Unless there's a particular feature you have to have ... I have the G7X on the to-do list. Not sure what your standards/requirements are for video, but if you're prepared to go slightly larger - check out the LX100, as it does 4K. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_Lhsrc9oG5U.html
What would be a good choice in aspect of picture quality only. A Canon T5i or the RX100M3. I like the macro on both of them, which one would be better?
barantb I haven't reviewed the 5ti, so not really qualified - but based on the sensor size and the ability to change lenses, I'd give the Canon the edge. Not really a valid comparison in my view.
barantb I'd focus more on sensor size than the number of megapixels - but to answer your question: It's a combination of marketing factors for product positioning and available technology. Although it's a bit of a generalization, typically larger sensors with fewer pixels have better low light performance (Sony's A7s is the perfect example)
Hi Maarten, Is the rx 100 m3 a better camera compared to a6000 ? If i'm able to get nikon j5 which is $300 cheaper what do you recommend between the 3 models (rx100m3,sony a6000, nikon j5). Great review btw :)
Thank you for a very thorough, informed review! There's just one feature I'm not sure about. In VIDEO mode, does the Sony RX100M3 have any form of auto exposure compensation? For example can I shoot video with auto exposure, but set maybe one or two stops of under-exposure? I shoot high contrast subjects in varying light and most auto-only exposure modes usually result in the highlights burning out.
Andy Nickless That's very kind of you to say - thanks! I know exactly what you mean - I have this issue all the time when shooting performers in a concert - the bright light on their face typically overexposes them, so you need to turn the highlights down - you don't want faces anywhere near 100%. I typically use manual exposure, setting the brightest object to about 70% on the histogram - although the zebra set at 75% (I want the exposure at 70%, so 75 is the warning that I'm over) is also a good way to judge the level. I returned the RX100M3 to Sony at the end of the review, so I can't check this. But I did try a couple of other recent Sony models with similar firmware and the EV dial does work in video mode, even when you use autoISO (which is what I would recommend if you're not using full manual) - 1/60 shutter, F5.6 aperture with autoISO if the light levels are erratic. The other thing I'd recommend is to use custom white balance set with the spot light on "white".
***** Thanks so much, Maarten. It looks as though the RX100M is just what I'm looking for to supplement my Sony EX1 and EX1R with footage you can only grab when you have a video camera in your pocket. I expect to order one tomorrow.I've watched so many reviews of the RX100M3 I think I need to go and lie down, but can I say that yours is one of the very best - and an added bonus is that you reply to everyone. Making "a rod for your own back", I'm sure, but much appreciated from this end, I can assure you. Best wishes, Andy
I dropped my 8th month old - “old new stock” RX100 and cried. Bought a used RX100 III and am still getting used to it. It had an outrigger charger with it. Supposedly one of my Sony remotes will work with this model. No I.b. - so I am feeling my way. Considering that I spent $275US for it - was a happy buyer. Still sad about dropping my original model….
Can RX100 III or any other RX100 (which one?) do clean HDMI out in full HD or even 4K? So that it can be use as live streaming camera via HDMI capture card? Thanks! :)
The RX100 III, IV and V provide live HDMI out. I don't have notes for the earlier models, but suspect they do also. If the camera does 4K, it will output a clean 4K signal, otherwise HD.
TR Brown In the video I'm using the peak design strap, but it's actually a little too large for the RX100. A smaller one, like one I have on my A6000 from Roots might have been better.
MrFriedgreentomatos You can, however, there is no setting to prevent the camera from turning off when you retract the viewfinder. You can use the power switch to turn it back on and use the LCD.
RX100MK3 or A7II or X100T or A6000 or E-M5 II??? I thought all I needed was money but money just gives me more options to consider. I have the EOS-M which I love outdoors but I want something really really fast for indoors. I keep coming back to the A7II but then...the RX100 is just so much easier to carry. I know I need to make up my mind on what my priorities are...portability or speed. happy shopping!
Olga Celle Thanks for the kind words. The camera does not have bluetooth. It does have wifi, which enables you to send photos to your smartphone or use the phone as a remote control.
I would love a "beginners" video like this one. You move so quickly through what the camera can do that I was lost. I am taking a trip in a month and have to learn this camera like the back of my hand in that time frame.
Kren Kurts Thanks for the kind words. I realize that it's usually a bit fast for beginners - but they are meant to be reviews, not instructions (although I realize that's part of it). I'd suggest that if you use the camera for a few days, and try a few things, you'll likely be a little less lost. Enjoy your trip. Take an extra battery and memory card(s).
I'm thinking of getting into photography and am getting tired of using my iPhone. I was thinking that this would be a good starter camera for me as its not a DSLR and I can bring it more places. I'm going on an trip to New York and Washington D.C. with my Architecture class in a few weeks and know I wouldn't be able to carry around a DSLR all day because I will be walking everywhere. Would this be a good first camera for me?
Sam Araujo While it would undoubtedly be a good first camera - it's likely more money than I would consider spending unless you're sure you're going to be using it regularly and are making a commitment to photography.
+Frozan Ahmadi There is nothing I can fault in image quality on the RX100 series, however, the A5100 has a larger sensor and the opportunity to change lenses, so unless the size of the camera is important to you, I'd take the A5100.
WoW! This is really great and useful review! Perhaps best available. Thank You for making it. Tiny and feature packed camera. One question- does it allow to shot timelapses (there should be app or apps to do them) when connected to charger by USB? This would be needed for longer intervals and periods.
msxcytb Thanks for your kind comment. You can create timelapses using the downloadable app ($9.99) but it is limited. There's a demo of it in my review of the NEX6: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jpawrDOQmI4.htmlm28s
msxcytb Thanks for the kind words. You can shoot timelapses using a downloadable app - I covered that in more detail in my review of the NEX6: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jpawrDOQmI4.htmlm28s to about 8:00. You can shoot when the charger is connected. You might want an external intervalometer.
what wrist strap would u recommend on this camera? Also, im not a professional, certainly not into videos. Should I consider rx100 iv (im on the verge to purchase a m3)? With m4's faster shutter speed, would that help in bright sunny outdoor shots (improvement over m3?). Its AF, dynamic range, low-light performance are unknown vs m3, i wonder if its worth the premium. thx.
robert In the video, I'm using the peak design - it's a little more flexible because the clip can detach from the strap. Faster shutter speed doesn't help for video, as unless you're going for some special effect like slow motion, you want to shoot at 1/30-1/60. In bright sunlight, ND does, so you can keep the shutter speed low and aperture open for a defocussed background. For the rest, not sure until I get a chance to try it out.
robert Oh dear, I just read again ... "not into videos". And I replied about video. Yes, for stills, it's a big advantage, as you'd be able to keep the shutter open wide even in the brightest sunny, snowy conditions. In any case, I'd wait for some reviews and real-world samples on flickr.
***** yah, i was thinking abt that too... even without ND filter for sharper images. With lens wide open + fast shutter = nicer bokeh under the sun... or something like that. it reminded me of x100t's fast shutter. But yea, it would be nice to see some pics from m4.
