Cyber-shot or Lumix? Which ever way you decide to go, Sony and Panasonic have both made amazing compact, fixed lens cameras, that consumers of all types can enjoy. Both camera's are expensive, but if performance and compact size is what you are after, these are the best cameras available in 2014. Enjoy!

Here we are in January of 2020 and both the LX100 and the RX100 mk iii are still very much in demand.

The RX100 Mark 4 has some real heat issues. After 5 minutes of 4K video, it shuts down as it starts to overheat. The LX100 has no heat issues.

Keep it simple: LX-100 Pros: Bigger sensor, fewer but larger pixels (greater color depth), best in class manual controls, 4K video, time lapses, much better battery life. RX100iii Pros: Smaller, more but much smaller pixels, tilt screen. Conclusion: LX-100 is for more experienced photographers. RX100 more suited for point and shoot folks.

I think the key main difference is the knobs vs menus for controlling these. With the lx100 you can control aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation (using auto iso I'm presuming) all without entering a menu. Completely different experience for those who actually understand how to shoot manual. I'll be getting it over the rx100 for exactly that reason.

That's the main reason I'm considering the Linux too. I feel that is it's main selling feature.

Your forgot to mention the 3 custom buttons in the LX-100, which are incredibly useful. All in all, RX is more handy, LX is a better camera.

Fairly good comparison, but I am not sure where you are getting some of your facts on the LX100. You mentioned that the LX100 can only zoom uding the zoom lever that surrounds the shutter button. That is simply not true. I zoom all the time with the lens control ring on my LX100. You can program either device for stepped or non-stepped zoom. The lens control ring can also provide manual focus, shutter control and other functions depending on how you have it programmed. You also mentioned that the Lumix LX100 uses 25mm as its widest focal length. From all that I have ever seen written, including Panasonic's site, this lens operates from 24mm-75mm.

Pixels are the same size on the 16mp m4/3 sensor as they are on the 12.8mp useable part of the sensor here on the lx100. It's a micro 4/3rd 16 mp sensor, but it's only using approx 80% of the sensor, so pixel size is the same as a 16mp m4/3 sensor. F stop equivalent probably same as an f1.8 on a M/43 using the whole sensor. They've done this to keep the size down, getting this zoom on a 4/3 would need a bigger lens and body

What about the Samsung Mini (1" bsi interchangeable lens, ) or the Canon GX 7. The Mini shoots in raw Jpg. Has a touch screen and wifi directly to the internet. Hi. I am in the market for a true pocket camera. I am leaning towards the Sony RXIII for its size and price. I find the Panasonic LUMIX LX100 a little big. Is there any camera better than the Sony RXIII with regard to price and size?
@borlean4691
@borlean4691 7 лет назад
Sharin Chatani Canon G7X Mark II, Panasonic LUMIX TZ100, Fujifilm X70 (warning, no zoom lens, still great though, same with Ricoh GR II), maybe Leica C/D-Lux 6 (or theirs Panasonic versions) if you want sth really tiny.
@KELARNAK
@KELARNAK 9 лет назад
sorry sir, shall you not put the lens cover on the lumix LX100 to see the actual size when you have it in the jacket ? because the Sony RX100 doesn't need a lens cover to fit in a pocket. Sony RX100 III is definitively the best smallest premium expert camera. Let other companies come with the same form factor (like Canon G7X) then we 'll compare what is comparable.

Hi! Looking for advice on what compact camera I should get! Right now I have been using a Canon T4i for a while now(planning to upgrade to a full frame in a year or two)but am looking for a compact camera to add on, especially for travels. My travels are going to be volunteer heavy. I would like to get great, professional photos and videos, but I can't take my dslr as it would be too much of a hassle because the main part of my trip would be the volunteer work. Which compact camera would be best for me? Thank You!:)

I do medical missions in the mountains in Myanmar. I have reserve weight for equipment etc. The RX100 mk 3 has served me well for 7 years, 8 trips. No dust issues although the mountains are dusty. Carried 2 extra batteries and had no issues. It’s the idea camera for those on volunteer trips to remote areas.

I've been trying to research a good travel camera to replace my phone and I don't lug around my dslr. I'm starting to get confused as to why these are fair comparisons. If I can't fit the LX100 in my pocket, I think it's going to fall into the same category as my dslr: left at home for my phone that fits in my pocket. Pointless, may as well go Fuji.

I doubt the LX100 would compete much against the RX100M3 in terms of sales. The M3 (together with the M1 and M2) sold like cakes because people were getting great images from such a small package. I can imagine the 'enthusiast' trying out the LX100 but even then I doubt the images would be that much more better with the sensor crop factor. Plus, it's too early for 4K at this point in time. I'm waiting for some real image comparisons...

I feel like the LX100 competes more directly with the a6000. In size, price and capability. in fact, if anything, it feels like it'll cannibalize sales from the smaller m4/3 ILCs.
@shanmugasundaram6625
@shanmugasundaram6625 9 лет назад
like gm1? a6000 is different league with 23" sensor unlike ILC which are 16".
@gedwardjones
@gedwardjones 9 лет назад
Shanmuga Sundaram The A6000 is my primary camera and I can honestly say that in my every day use the 23 MP don't make any difference to me. I don't make huge prints and I was able to print 13 x20 inches (I believe) with acceptable results with my 8MP Canon 40D. I think for most users who will be doing showing their work on the web or printing that size or lower (above that printer costs become prohibitive for most hobbyist and even a lot of pros) the "it has twice the megapixels" argument isn't a good one. But in all other ways the LX100 stacks up very, very closely to the A6000 with the kit lens and given the choice today I'm not sure if I'd have picked the Sony given the LX's better lens.
@shanmugasundaram6625
@shanmugasundaram6625 9 лет назад
I view photos on my large size tv, so i will need those MP. I also love good depth of field which larger sensor size helps. I own rx100 now, but I will very well buy lx100 on my next purchase just for the additional controls.
@travellife08
@travellife08 7 лет назад
I was ready to purchase the Sony a6000, mainly because I own 3 vintage Canon lenses that will work with an adapter on that camera. Then I noticed this camera. I'm drawn to the manual controls which I prefer over digital. Now I'm leaning towards the Lumix with every review I see. Think I'll give my daughter the old school Canon lenses to use on her full frame EOS.

Great video... I've been looking for a Premium compact camera. The last one I owned was a Sony 270 many years ago then that was taken over by many variations of mobile phone cameras. I've been looking at the RX100iii and the LX100 and I love the compact design of the Sony.. With the LX having the bigger sensor of the two and Sony having the greater number of pixels, would that make these two equal when taking pictures?
@v8guggi
@v8guggi 9 лет назад
Bill Paxton No it wouldn't. The number of pixels has a completely different impact on your pictures than sensor size. It's as thogh you were asking "car A has 6 cylinders and car B is rear wheel drive, would that make them equal?" Due to these differences it's actually physically impossible to take exactly the same picture with both cameras. However, in terms of mere image quality there is no difference to talk about. If you want to take pictures as you do with your mobile but with much higher quality results, the Sony is the better choice. If you plan to visit photography workshops, you should pick the Panasonic.
@glennsak

Isn't it actually a four thirds sensor (not a micro four thirds) with cropped ratios (1:1, 3:2, etc)? Also, you did not mention Olympus being an innovative player in the DI market (7-axis stabilization, etc). Great video overall.
@darioprime
@darioprime 9 лет назад
Shaka The four thirds sensor is used on nearly all MFT cameras, the only exception I know about is the BMPCC. MFT only refers to the lens mount. The Panny does indeed though, not use the whole sensor, letting them create a smaller, more bright, and cheaper for them to make, lens.

Some people (like me) 95% of purchase decision is aesthetics. When it comes to spend hard earned cash or something, I won't spend a $1 unless I absolutely love it. I don't absolutely love the LX100 because the extended lens looks ugly, but other than that, I like all the features, and I like as much what the LX100 as what it does not have. I am happy that it does not have cheesy plastic articulated LCD, which frankly ruins the aesthetics of the camera. I far prefer the articulated LCD that fully closes so I don't have to look at it at all. My old DMC-FZ30 has that, and it's pleasure to use with closed LCD. Anyway, am I overreacting, or aesthetics are very important in high-end point and shoot camera?
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 8 лет назад
Taft Films I still have the DMC-FZ30. It has an articulated LCD that I can keep closed, which I do most of the time. I like that type of the LCD. What I don't like are the ones that articulate, but don't close, like on the new Olympus cameras. It simply ruins the camera aesthetics that cheesy plastic articulated screen.

well in that case your gonna have to hold out on purchases forever.. if you compare these two for example they are both made in china, similar specs and the only aesthetic difference really is size. The panasonics bigger size prob has its advantages, as someone else here mentioned the sony heats up shooting 4k - the panasonic probably has better heat dissipation due to its larger size.
