You missed the 4 channel feature and having a safety + one always omni directional channel.

yeah that pretty much negates his negative of using the onboard mic issue

I have yet to use this mic on manual. With digital audio and levels set to auto, the audio never clips. It’s like it has a built in limiter and a lift for the lows. If your considered about the noise floor I can admit that could be an issue. These days most NLE’s have voice isolation so it’s not a problem for me.

i am an external audio guy. I was researching if this mic can record external audio. Question answered. Thanks.

Yeah, it's a good mic for what it is but it's really only good at 1 thing

I prefer knob this way. This mic opens up two extra audio channels where the camera records one channel at something like -30db. So on-the-fly adjusting is not so critical Just hot glue something on it.

I am usually behind the camera, and having a robust audio solution is a must. On camera mics have never been an option. Maybe with the FX3/FX30 handle because you get 4 inputs. It's either wireless, xlr, or synced scratch audio. This mic looks great because of its size and features

Yeah, typically in professional settings, I use these for scratch audio only. Obviously as you can see in my video, I have a NTG5 shotgun wired to an external recorder for my audio in the studio. The extra benefit to this is that if you use Sony cameras, you don't have any cables which is great

I wish the sony cameras let me use this + the 3.5mm jack. I'd love to use this and wireless lav mics to be able to choose the best / have a backup all in camera for vlogging@@learningcameras

I have this mic and love it for the content I produce. My biggest issue is that you can’t use this mic and a top handle. There is an extension cable, the EXTENSION CABLE FOR AUDIO, XLRK3M, but it mounts in such a way that it also competes for the same space as a top handle which is insane! I wish they would make a right-angle MI extension but Sony ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either that or Sony have an additional hotshoe, with or without the multi interface.

How is the audio quality? I will be using it for wildlife filming.

It's good but if quality is more important than convenience and you are mostly getting audio of things in front of the camera, I'd say get this instead : amzn.to/4aQCsGk

@@learningcameras I have bought ecm-b1m . Awesome on Camera microphone . It has enough long range.

The microphone is awesome, but it's a big drawback that it has to be mounted to the camera at all times. As a result, in addition to this mic, you have to carry something like a DJI wireless mic with you. Also, the Sony 6700 is awesome as well."

Great insights brother. Ordered it today. But i totally agree with you on the mics being flat on top lol.. dust and rain problems may arise. That dead kitten comes with it right?

So far mine has held up well but it still makes me a bit nervous lol. Yes, the deadcat comes included!

@@learningcameras Great 😊 thanks. I intend to leave it at auto and select the patterns as needed. But manual settings being turned off in the camera seems odd. Hopefully a firmware update soon.

I’d like to get this but for the money and use case it’s hard. I just got the wireless pro rode kit it’s amazing I’m just debating on how I want to capture non controlled environments or if I want to just integrate that with a videomic go ii 3.5mm instead also. Things get confusing
@learningcameras

Yeah, I love this mic in theory, but I still have plenty of times I'm still using my Rode NTG because of the way too narrow use cases

@@learningcameras that’s about it too lol. I have all 3 options now I said whatever I guess this is the way it goes right 😂

Sorry for my ignorance - but you use the initials 'B.T.S' more than once in this vid. What does that mean?

It’s a fine microphone, but I returned it because its use case is quite narrow: events where you can’t mic people… maybe. Thing is a normal shotgun mic is more versatile, you can boom it above people for more serious shoots, so I’ll just use my shotgun mics for events. In the past vloggers would have loved this mic, but the DJI and Rode and Hollyland wireless mics are so good, and so easy to use, that this mic becomes useless (at least to my eyes). (Maybe I’ll wish I had it when I’m at the zoo with my kids… as it’s less serious looking than a longer mic. Maybe I’ll get the little Sony mic with the MI interface for that.) I bought it originally because I was going to use it for interviewing studio owners and I thought it would be an easy way to get audio from both of us walking around while they showed off their studio…yeah that was a dumb idea. It’s actually horrible at this compared to the Rode wireless mics as they don’t require people to face the camera, etc. I love Sony, but I honestly can’t think of a reason to own this mic. Also, it sticks up too high. Hard to use in crowded events when on a second camera hanging from a strap as one is always worried it will snap off. Sound quality was good, but not super special. I used at women’s conference and thought the super directional mode would allow me to hone in more on the 1 to 1 conversations and it did, but it wasn’t anything better than a shotgun mic would have done. The ability to change modes is great, but just not that useful! Also the mic takes up the hot-shoe, and blocks professional equipment like monitors, handles, etc. A normal shotgun mic could be mounted on a rig in ways to accommodate this.

Definitely agree the way they designed this is for a narrow use case. If it had a 3.5mm output or work with USB, that would have greatly enhanced the use cases. It's definitely more of a vlogger style mic. It's a great mic and I ended up purchasing it myself, but as I said in the video, extremely narrow use case and it doesn't replace any other piece of gear
