A collection of common issues and fixes for the Sony Betamax C20/C30/C40/C80 with some cross over to the HF100.
The white gears are currently available from here:

These should be the right ones - the original listing for 50 is no longer live unfortunately. They have 11 teeth and a 2mm bore.
The resistor part of the video - it's the lead from a 1/4w resistor.

Thanks for the tips in this video! I've got an F30 with suspected worn heads & a HF100 that won't load tapes. More please- keep up the good work, much appreciated!

Thank you so much for the comments. I possibly have a good F30 head disk - I'll have to have a dig around. With the HF100 - what happens when you push a tape in - does it lower it down but then you get lacing motor spin and nothing else?

Thank you. That's a real Sony classic! I'll be doing a big restoration on the Pal version soon so keep an eye out for that. What VHS machines do you have and which is your favourite?

holding a cam is allways a pain i dropped alot i put it on a boom arm lost so many over the years to dropping them with led lights on the boom as well

That certainly makes me feel better! I used a lot back in the 80s and 90s but thankfully what i was recording meant I could usually use a tripod.

hi i been watching ebay finding low price decks to work on is now a right pain to find and model that are all the same that we can use as parts prices are now silly i have been watching your channel you work on a.lot of the same decks you know well this why i love the cam models i just like them i allways get offered alot of tapes bob

Really nice video, it's so helpful. I wanted to ask if there would be any problem with changing the black gear for a metal gear to guarantee it's not breaking in the future.

No, using the metal version of the gear works really well and as you say, it won't fail again.

@@MrBetaByte Hello, Finally I ordered the metal version but it was too small. But then I bought the one you recommend on ebay, and it also seems to be too small. I try to place it into the shaft but it doesn't fit. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong.

hi hood points in the video i watch it all as i work on betacam sp decks i have got some betamax i have to service some time yes they are good decks i have 3 like this they have the 8 system decks pinch rollers are bad i will get to them bob

Pinch rollers can be a challenge but the state of the rubber can be worked around as long as the bearings are good for the Betamax machines that is.

hi when i am putting on the new botton's on the front panel i put something under when solding them on and take it any when done stand out more 0.5mm more up to you as well

That's certainly one method of doing it and I guess it's up to the job too giving the type of leads used.

My C40ES gets really warm at the back when playing for 30min at least. Is there a fix to that?

Good question - I would swap out the smaller capacitors on the power supply itself and then remove the STK power regulator chip and clean it up (plus everywhere else) and put some good quality heatsink paste where it mounts. That should help a lot but they do run pretty warm anyway. Also, make sure the is good ventilation from underneath the machine so you get a good air-flow though it. hi i find you know sony betacam 1800 i know why now they go down yes bad caps in one place that micro smd fuse s i have to change over after i re cap the part bob

Bad caps can pop those SMD fuses and I'm seeing this with older kit now.

hi you have a super point i having to say to my very old mate he still use alot of vhs decks he's lucky they get handed in all the time he's not p,leased the price is going up note i did pick up a ADAT fpr a £1 ir hade bad caps i could see in the pic audio cap line in i have 6 working one's all were fix me up i having to look for things more out of my range in the tascam 38's i am finding the main logic pcb are going bad small breaks are opening up in the pcb i wonder if you are finding bad pcb's hit by age i have a otari mtr 12 the record coil i test it the meter says OL rest is ok i have to jazz the deck do you ever jazz or do a work around

Not really bad PCBs but I do find interconnecting ribbon cables are dissolving with age now. Capacitor leakage seems to be the biggest PCB killer at the moment.

Hi. Great Tutorial. Very instructive. Thanks. The buttons that you changed has 4 pins, but Sony ones has 5. How do you made it?

Thank you very much for the comment. The 5th pin on the Sony switches only screens the metal on the top of the switch and isn't necessary. I just tidy up the now unused hole left by fitting the four pin modern replacement.

@@MrBetaByte Thanks for your answer. With your videos I was able to fix an SL-C30PS which has all the classical problems a sony betamax has. All I have to do is to replace the small 10 teeth and a sound problem. When the unit is stopped but powered on, there is a strong buzz in the speakers. The buzz stops when I press play. Hi Alex, sorry but have only just seen your reply! Yes, those are the correct teeth. Fantastic you got your C30PS up and running. Another subscriber had a problem with his C40 which is identical to what your seeing with yours. It is a capacitor (I'd change the lower voltage capacitors in the power supply as a rule of thumb anyway although you can leave the higher voltage ones and the main large smoothing cap as they very seldom cause issues). I do also recollect that on the AV input board underneath, there is a capacitor near the sockets (220uF 16v I think) that can cause this issue and can even have physical signs of leakage. @@MrBetaByte Hi MrBetaByte. I found on the board, near the AV connectors, 3 caps rated 16V 10uF. There are no other caps in the vicinity of AV connectors, although on the board are a lot of them. I changed all 3 but the problem persist. Strange enough, when I soldered back one of the old caps, for a short period of time (aprox 10 minutes), the problem disappeared. I'm confused because I checked all caps with an ESR meter and I used no chines caps.

Is that how to remove the complete front loading system or disassemble the front loading system when removed?

@@MrBetaByte to be honest, I couldn't remove the basket after taking out four screws. It turned out that there are 5 screws that holds the basket on. I missed the one on the middle. So what ever you show I'm ok now. I find your videos very usefull. Thanks for that. Please keep on making more of them.

hi bob here i been watching alot of your 100ub deck s there is one deck i don't think you know about there's a 100ub that was not sold to us i have 12 sl100ub's they all need work i been buying them from repair places that could not do the work same as te sony c9 i have to do alot of hrs on them this why i stop buying home decks i a fond the betacam sp hit the used market place and are a better deal in the long run i have to make video's for youtube because i know there 100 line need help keep them going 10 years more life i am a big player i just keep quiet to stop prices going up as you keep on ebay betamax decks are very hit used and betacam sp is very low it's only time before prices will start to go up over time and soon best for me to come out of the dark into the light i know the show off's will not be very pleased on bit i was getting trolls from the one's that's been making video's for a long time bob's bit's

Is that the Hf100p you're talking about? Yes, the Betamax prices have been high for a long time. Cheaper in the UK at the moment but very much increasing in Europe.
