Sony SL-C6 Betamax VCR - A Carboot Pickup 

Hooray!!! thrilled to see a video from Tom in my subscriptions my day just got better:D

Nice machine! I've not had any hands-on experience with Betamax, but like any fan of vintage technology the format has always intrigued me. With VHS, one of my favourite retro machines was the Ferguson Videostar 3V23 (JVC HR-7700 clone) as it had full servo control with an electronic tuner and remote control. We owned one from new in 1981 and it was in day-to-day use until 1994! :)

Nice find! It has the typical Sanyo bad capacitors in the servo board and that's what's causing the head drum and capstan speed not to lock in play mode. Replace the caps, lubricate the mechanism and it should work like a dream.

He's back!!!! :-) Tom the odd noise as you insert the tape is the heads retrieving the tape from the casette! Looking forward to your Networking videos.. PS I e-mailed you!

Really cool.... I had a stereo betamax machine for quite a few years, but never used it. So I sold it a couple years ago....

The only Beta device I have ever found, was a re-winder, with fast forward, (of course) rewind, and a fancy alarm to tell you when your tapes are fully rewound.

My granddad used to have a Betamax back in the 80s 90s but I do not remember it much but do remember people having and playing VHS tapes and video shops. I am 36 now

Hey, Im a massive Betamax fan, had lots over the years. When I was growing up I thought they were the one to have as the video shop only ever had beta tapes on the shelf in the rental shop, little did I know it was because all the popular VHS had been rented. Picked up a VTC5000 when I was about 12/13 for my bedroom. BTW I think I know the engineer you mentioned, at some point I'll be sending him my Sanyo. I've a pile of the Sony you got there, sadly dumped them as no one wanted them for spares. Still watching this as I type, not read the comments and someone else has probably said, but I think the capacitors might neen replacing, either that or it just needs a good clean and a run through.

What a find! I’ve kept my VHS player and tapes from the day, haven’t used it for years but still got it :) my school friend had a VHS and a Betamax and tons of tapes, he collected his films. No idea if he kept them as they must be worth a bit now.

Wow. That’s the model that my family had as our first VCR, back in 1984.

Not sure if he ever got the problem sorted, I couldn’t find a conclusion video or part 2. I have a Sanyo Betacord with good heads but audio seems out of sync, might just want belts changing, big heavy machine, a little like his Betamax in size.

That sound when inserting the tape. As far as I know the difference (one of them) between Betanax snd VHS is that Betamax move the tape around the head after insertion of the cassette. VHS only unlosds the tape when push on start. Hence Betamax will start showing the recording faster. Only when.ejecting the cassette the tape will return completely in the cassette. With VHS that happens when.pushing on stop.

A couple of Sanyo 0.22uf electrolytic capacitors need changing, they are right next to the capstan freewheel preset control on one of the bottom boards. Use 0.22uf polyester or similar rather than electrolytic, then reset the freewheel speed. That should sort out the capstan speed problem, and you can see if there are other servo problems.

HI i had 2 decks the same and they came from car boot sale well i have a betamax for hifi sony 701 es unit i was using to record all the star trek show on bbc2 back in the day till the box sets came out funny i still have some C20 C30 decks sony made a stereo hi-fi and stereo in one deck the tape when in at the top it had big uv meter's on the front panel in black love the betacam tapes i use in my old decks

I picked up a Sony C5 locally with a boat load of tapes, got it home and couldn’t believe it worked

Tip with these machines fast forward tape (not in play back ) then rewind tap do this 2 or 3 times and this helps clean the heads

Hey couldn’t help but notice the enttec box cover, so I was wondering what dmx software and y you use that software. Ps, I’m a lighting designer, and think it would be awesome if you did some videos on lighting.

The heads aren't the problem, it's the Caps on the servo board.. These like the USA SL-5000 models have faulty light blue sanyo caps on the servo board which makes the tape play at wrong speed and heads spin out of sync.. Replace the sanyo light blue capacitors and adjust the pots on the servo board to get proper speeds with both BII and BIII speeds

Have you managed to get this one working i got a sony c7 my dad found at a radio fair he got it for £2 with 4 tapes and a service manual the heads are good but i believe there are capacitors to replace to make it perfect.

I had the Panasonic NV-688-B VHS video recorder, purchased in 1985. A mono machine, cost £550.00 which was a fortune at the time. A good machine that never let me down. Happy memories....

The 'noise' you were referring to is tuner static as this model has no way of switching off this if no tv stations are tuned in. Most vcr's had a Tuner/EXT IN switch so you could blank this off. No idea why Sony chose not to do this.The strange noise when rewinding the 'Karate Kid 11' tape is the tape shell /spools vibrating. Some tapes were prone to this, even more on the always laced type machines (VHS as well).Your issue is the common failing of the tiny electro caps in the servo area.Very, very common to the C6.It isn't dirty heads as you would have no picture at all.These were a bit similar in loading to the Sanyo VTC 53/400 but way, way heavier.Hope this helps?

Might just be as simple as a head cleaning. I mean, who knows how long its been since it had been cleaned and where it had been stored could have accumulated lots of dust

Hi, just wondering if you know he answer to this question unrelated to this video sorry, I have a PowerBook G4 in like new condition, it’s the 2003 15’ 1ghz model, I’ve upgraded the ram to 2gb but was wondering if the logic boards are interchangeable, for example if I was to buy a used g4 of eBay 1.67ghz model could I use my chassis. Thank you in advance for any help offered.

This is the mark 2 machine i believe i have a mark 1 mine works mechanically but only has a grey screen output not sure the heads are good but the output i get is not quite how most i have seen with worn out heads guessing it could have worn out caps my mk1 is silver mine i got from my dad for free saved it from being chucked out .my dad has a boxed mk2 in his cellar but it has suffered from damp so far i have removed the complete head drum not sure if it,s the same as the mk1 head assembly i can get spares from the mk2 my dad has if you have any motors or boards you need replacements for or spares i can possibly remove parts from it.

Heads need cleaning although you will have to take the lid off to access the heads, it is based on the UMATIC (C)(R) Video format, set the tracking control so that the notch in in the centre facing you, do you know what is weird is that GRUNDIG/PHILIPS decided to make it into a double sided video cassette system called the VIDEO 2000.

hi you said ou like the hi-fi i have had 9 of them alot of things go bad i have ton in my house as spare parts i went over to betacam sp they have 4 clannel audio wow they sound ace i payed 25.00 each uniit beware they are very very heavy betacam i only use for audio as the video play back on alot doe's not work right

The sanyo capicators need to be replaced, theres 10 of them on the servo board. Its an Incredibly common problem on this model.

Clean the heads see if that helps the issues with the sound and picture

You might be able to use tape from a vhs tape inside a beta case not tried it but might be worth investigating .

The picture could either the tracking needs to be adjusted or the video heads need a head cleaning, (a head cleaner beta tape).

Interesting, whenever I think of you (don't get this in a wrong way), next day you release a video. Do I have to do this every week? Come on man, more videos! :) 14 kilos? You will give Tim Cook a heart attack! I would check the actual tapes to see if any damage was done before I would insert any more into it. I am glad it is sort of working. I hope you get it repaired one day. Just be careful if you try to repair it yourself, don't hurt yourself.

If you’d like it to be repaired, I repair vintage electronics. Televisions, radios, and video recorders. Seems extremely simple!

Noisy, but seems pretty normal for an old machine. Betamax was an interesting system.

The servo board needs re-caped

Takes tape out, and puts it directly on top of TV not a good idea... Great find though I have same machine mine works flawlessly...

you know you talked about stereo liner stereo on the usa of this get hold of a quad audio beracam sp the sound is WOW IN QUAD no drop outs like the hi fi betamax decks i have 9 100ub i have i part out to bad to fix up some one said they pay me £1000 uk for them as they are prices are up alot on betamax i just seen the price on betacam sp decks going up i had 2 eu pallets of them sold to me as juck £10 decks £160 i payed a pallet x2 a skip was going to cost the same ex hire place was going to skip them all i was very luck a mate of my brother's used to work on betamax he was allways buying them in to do up all the time now fixing beta video's is a right pain

Theres should be a tuner for you to adjust thr flickering.

hi up date funny thing i went to pick up a betacam deck the man i get it from deals with alot of film formats you will find alot of betamax decks come from when they clean house's out he deals with old video studios as well you were very lucky to find this at a car boot sell as alot get passed around people who are in the know i get emails asking to take juck of there hands alot all the time time to time i get good gear in need of work the days of carboots is coming to a end to many flippers now with phones buying gear of the sellers i am working on a tascam 38 note it work again 100% it need alot of jazzing up it's 40 years old got alot of info out of it how it works sometimes i have to do this with video decks to bob

hi there is one super good man that can fix them i don't know if he's still around he was in brighton hove way that beta man on youtube in the uk is very good i went over to betacam sp digi because the cards are better to deal with funny thing i do now have alot of betacam sp decks that are working great my backer will not let me sell any gear because there a gran kid love gear as well so it how is past down to the next gen i had this model was there a stereo one with te vu LED's on the front panel c7 i know of big brown unit with the tape mag on top

Dein Recorder findet die Spurlage nicht ( Tracking ) dir mal die Andruckrolle, Antriebsriemen, Bremsband für die Spuhlenteller am genauer an, ob diese Ausgeleiert oder ausgehärtet sind. Ich gehe mal davon ais das sämtliche Teile neu Gefettet werden müssen da das alte Fett verharzt und das Laufwerk dann nicht mehr Richtig Funktioniert, dann wirst du sehen was Das Ding für Geniale Bilder macht, und würde noch einige Elkos (Capsiatoren) erneuern. Dieses Gerät Liefert bei Guter Wartung Bessere Bilder als so mancher VHS.
