Buy Phantom LUTs - ARRI 5 Pack here: www.joelfamula...
Gen 10 update video: • Matching my FS7 with M...
Now available for ARRI and BMPCC4K/6K cameras as well as Sony.
The 5 LUTs Described Below:
LUT 1) Neutral - A neutral ARRI look - no colour cast or 'look' - just the classic ARRI Rec709 look.
LUT 2) Tungsten - A slightly warmer golden cast best utilised for subjects bathed in tungsten light.
LUT 3) Ice Blue - Blue, colder cast with punchy, deep blues (looks amazing on subjects with blue eyes).
LUT 4) Green Eyes - Subtle green cast - distinctive, filmic greens and of course, amazing with green eyed subjects.
LUT 5) Utopia - the most filmic look of the LUTs, with blood red reds and filmic blues and greens. It’s my personal take on what Utopia would look like.

I purchased a myriad of Lut packs unnecessarily. In the end I decided to spend more dollars to buy yours and I was thrilled. They are fantastic! Just apply one of the 5 in the Pack, adjust the white balance and exposure and you're done. The colors are pasty and pleasant. Congratulations nice job Joel.

I found the best way to use these LUTs is to burn the LUT into the footage using Atomos Ninja V in SLOG3. I tried to shoot SLOG3 compressed on to the SD card to grade later and it looks way better shooting Apple ProRes HQ on Atomos with SLOG3 setting in Sony with the Arri LUT burned directly in; makes for way way less noise, artifacts and pixelation.

Hi Joel! Thanks for great LUTs :) I have a question. In the Color Management settings, should I put "Rec709 A" in the Timeline color space? I'm a Mac user. Doesn't that mean that as soon as I load my s.gamut-cine3/slog3 footage to the timeline, that it gets converted to r709 A? Wouldn't it be better for me to keep the s.gamut3/S-log3 for the timeline and keep the LUT applied at the very end. So that I'm doing my corrections in a larger color space before it gets converted to r709? If so would I need a cst from s.gamut3/S-log3 to r709 A? Second question. Is the Output color space setting "Rec.709 Gamma 2.4" the right setting. I'm on a Mac studio display using DaVinci Resolve. Thanks for all your great work!
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 7 месяцев назад
Hey man good question! You should use Rec709 A as your Timeline Colour Space, and not s.gaumut3/S-Log3. You want the Timeline Colour Space to be in the color space that the LUT has converted the Log into. ie, Rec709 is the colour space that the LUT has converted your S-Log footage into. For example, if you wanted the footage to remain in S-Log then use S-Log colour space. But because the LUT has converted the footage into Rec.709 - that is the colourspace you want to display on your timeline. For the monitor thing, email me with some screen grabs! hello@joelfamularo.com

Just purchased the Slog suite and was going through the documentation. I am hoping to gain some clarity around the recommended use per camera body style. Just though it was strange that the recommended lut for the FX3 is the A7Siii where the FX30 and FX6 is recommended for the FX6 lut. A little confused since the FX3 sits between the FX6 & FX30. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hey man, These look really amazing. Im getting an a7iii tomorrow and these right when I get home! One quick question, how do you approach white balance to get an accurate setting in most situation if you don't have a grey card and find yourself a bit "run & gun"? (hoping that makes sense..!) Also when you say you leave the slog profile as it is, you don't even turn down the sharpness? thank you!

Hey man, thanks for the kind words! Glad you like them :) With WB I just do it by eye and follow these basic rules - I set my wb to 5600k if my lighting is predominantly daylight , I set it to 4300k if it's a mix of internal tungsten lighting and daylight/moonlight or if its in an office space with flourescent lighting and if if it's tungsten and I want to nuetralise the yellow tungsten look, I set it to 3200k but honestly I almost never use 3200 and shoot most night time and tungsten stuff on 4300 as I like getting a little blue and yellow colour contrast. Yes you're right - I DO set my sharpening to -7 sorry.

Jordan this is special! I just bought it and already have all Arri simulation luts like art adams or Bert but yours are by far the best. Can't believe how you archived that! Master! I just sometime have to change the hue before using the lut and that's it. Your are right you don't have to overexpose any more but the image gets a little to dark for my taste so I overexpose by one stop. All done with a fs5. Great! Geat! Btw: Is the raw recording worth it? Just worrying about the heavy atomos recorder which kills the lightweight feeling of the fs5. Not?

Hi Joel, any thoughts on over-exposure using these LUTs? is there a way of working with them if you want to overexpose 2 stops, keep information in the middle of the gamma curve and bring down in post?
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
If you want to, you can - I just simply designed the LUTs to give a look that doesn't encourage so much over exposure, as I really dislike that look because of what it does to the highlights and shadows and mids - so in short - what it does to the image as a whole. Also if you want to incorporate the highlight rolloff I designed in the LUTs, you need to allow room for it to do it's thing and over exposing two stops means you're going to start having really bland and washed out images and tonnes of clipped highlights considering that S Log 2/3 only has 6 stops in the top half of the image above middle grey. So the 'Alexa Look' isn't just the colours, it's how you shoot, expose and how your highlights clip - so yes, when shooting, I recommend exposing properly or at most, one stop over when using these LUTs - it's a whole workflow really but that's how I got the above images to appear so 'Non- Sony' looking. If you're worried about noise, you don't have to be - go watch my Film Look video and I explain why in more detail but in short these LUTs help suppress noise in the shadows greatly. Also check out the readme that comes with the LUTs. If, you still want to over expose 2 stops, then I'd just say bring down the highlights in post and your image should balance out more.

Hello Joel, I've just bought your luts. I'm a beginner with Slog on my fs5 mark 2. All I learn until now comes from Allister Chapman (its works is fantastic). just a few precisions about exposure, I've read your note about no need to surexposure. what is your exposure recommendation for a scene with and without people with zebra/oscilloscope ? This question cause I've in mind the settings from Allister (including surexposition) : skin tones (56-62) white (68-72) ? Bruno (France)
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
Hey man, thanks for buying them! The LUTs come with a readme which should help you a lot with how to get the best out of them, but yeah basically exposing skintones around 55-60 is a good place to start and what I tend to do. I might sometimes even go up to 65 or down to 50 depending on the mood of the project - but try keep them within that range (50-65). Alister is great - he's helped me many times with advice and tips and really knows his stuff. In the end, the LUTs are designed to be very natural looking and very easy to use so just do some tests and find what works for you :) Do you have an external monitor?

I found out that these LUT works best between +0.5 to +0.7. I initially tested with +1.7 to +2.0, it looks very de-saturated, lack of contrast and "smoky". I can't afford a monitor, so I rely mostly on the exposure value at the bottom of the LCD. Its definitely not a LUT that you could put on and ready to go. Some minor tweaking in the shadows/highlights is required. Other than that, I love these LUT for it's subtle colour and filmic "softness"... Tested on a A6300 pp7. I just purchased them , so I am still looking for the best exposure for this LUT

Great looking footage and great job on those LUTS!! Was this shot in camera on FS5, or RAW? Do you over expose when shooting these scenes and are you using LUTS when viewing on monitor? Thanks
@garfunkle37
@garfunkle37 5 лет назад
Santaella Media most of these were fs5 raw but some were fs5 internal and a couple were even my a7iii. I tend to expose properly or maybe one stop over but these LUTs won’t have a big effect on your exposure by design. If you over expose it will look over exposed and if you under expose it will appear so. They help greatly with noise though I’ve noticed and finally yes I monitor with these LUTs when I shoot on my shogun.
@santaellamedia7077
@santaellamedia7077 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply Joel. I usually overexposed the log from my Sony cameras, would your LUTS translate the same to that footage? How do you get the noise out from the shadows?
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
@Santaella Media yeah look if you over expose it too much it may appear a little too bright maybe - hard to know, but even then you can correct that quickly and easily by bringing the exposure bar down in post. In no time, you'd get used to the workflow and you'd be exposing to get the best out of the LUTs. They help with noise because of the gamma curve I developed - tends to compress the shadows in a really natural way and I started noticing it helped a little with disguising a bit of noise that s log2 can give sometimes - not completely but quite a surprising amount - it is noticeable.

Want these for Hlg 3 🔥
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
Рикка Домашний Hi thanks man! So I tried to make them for HLG but I couldn’t. HLG doesn’t have enough dynamic range to create the look and especially not enough for a nice highlight roll off. Arri Alexa and film have 14 stops of dynamic range and Alexa had 7-8 stops of those in the highlights. S Log has 14 stops but only 6 are in the highlights but it’s close enough to make a close approximation of the look. HLG has 11 stops of dr and only 3-4 of those are in the highlights. It’s simply insufficient for the task. So you are limited to s Log if you want the look I’ve created sorry dude. S Log is better and the only profile capable of achieving this image. Joel

honestly i prefer the before look on most of these. The lut, in my opinion, adds too much contrast and the highlights are too harsh. The "Alexa look" is supposed to be a bit softer, lower contrast, and a slight green feel.

@arianhendricks6683 5 лет назад
They are great actually, but I see cases in the example where it crushes highlight and shadow details though 😕
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
Arian Hendricks yes that’s part of the look. You want low contrast and a smeared look in the extreme ends of the shadows and highlights to make the images feel more natural and convincing because that’s what the human eye does and what film and the Alexa does. Try it - next time you’re looking into a dark room, see if the contrast and clarity of detail are the same in the dark room as they are in a well lit part of the house you can look at. They aren’t - the eye does it’s best but contrast and clarity begin to deteriorate at the low end of your visible dynamic range. Same with a really bright area - where you can barely look without squinting. Also make sure you watch on a computer, not an iPhone because all the detail will still be there in the highlights and shadows but will just be less clear. But that’s by design.
@arianhendricks6683
@arianhendricks6683 5 лет назад
@@phantomluts I disagree. This may be true for some of the "look" of some artistic expressions. However, displaying more Dynamic Range (especially in the highlights) is almost always desired by Professionals to get the more true to "human eye look" as far is DR in concerned, but thank you for taking the time out to respond. I really appreciate it.
@phantomluts
@phantomluts 5 лет назад
Arian Hendricks no worries man! But sorry I don’t agree as the whole point on Log is to allow you maximum dynamic range to then affect with grading and a a pleasing gamma curve. If you have full clarity right up to the point that the image clips then you have no highlight rolloff - you don’t want to be able to clearly discern the moment the image clips or then it looks like video and not film or Alexa - I used to agree with you because I thought that dynamic range alone was what made an image cinematic but it’s how you USE the dynamic range. Again this is the basis for all well designed LUTs - it’s not really contentious as if you study the gamma curves of any manufacturer lut they’ll all have a highlight roll off built in because you don’t want a blunt clip point - it’s jarring and distracting. Again my LUTs still show the full 14 stops of dynamic range but the details becomes more foggy at the low and high extremes.
