Yeah but if you have to look at it, a nice finish is always better. It's like my Samsung PVR I got in 2012, still working and looks amazing. It has a non-tray disc input. Subsequent models were cheaper and had a disc tray. Looked plastic. I've spent 8 years looking at something nice under my tvs.
Everything mentioned in this review is correct, although I didn't find it that noisy as Steve mentioned. The only other thing worth mentioning is with the recent firmware update of Dolby Vision, the setting has to be turned on/off manually and does not automatically engage with corresponding blu rays. A minor annoyance but hopefully this gets resolved in a future update.
Movies look so good on this player, even old ones look new and Dolby Vision gives them incredible detail. I watched the Crow on Bluray and it just looks so good!
Just got one of these due to the lack of DV support with discs on series x and ps5, and very happy with it. For the money the performance is really good, i could see a considerable jump of both picture and sound quality compared to both consoles, i really did not expect that considering how cheap it is, well done on this one Sony!
Yeah, the standalone player is really convenient. Just plug it into its own hdmi port on my LG oled and theres no need to adjust picture setting between gaming and movies, just change inputs👌
It matters hugely! Poor built quality usually means poor components, poor error correction system, poor drive system and poor laser assembly using plastic instead of glass with short longevity. This usually means a poor user experience long term with the freezing of the disc, jumping etc. It's very much like comparing a really decent CD player of the olden days with the entry level, flimsy cheap ones that came a few years later - they were the ones that jumped and skipped with the slightest vibration. With optical media like this, construction with top class components are 100% a necessity. This is old fashioned 1970s style optical media and the rules really have not changed, in fact, it needs to be even more precise given the complications of UHD BluRay.
@@BarcelonasHotCrowd i've been using this for a year with no issue. and we're still using the s6700 in another room with no problems for almost 5 years - all that is in your head.
You probably dont give a shit but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest movies on Instaflixxer. Have been watching with my gf for the last few months :)
Back in 2014 I brought the Sony BDPS4100 brand new from Amazon for £65 and it never even had the build quality of my previous Blu Ray Player which was the Sony BDP-S550 that cost me £350. But the BDPS4100 was light years ahead of it and totally blew the BDP-S550 out of the water. It just goes to show you that even more expensive Blu Ray players are not always as good as budget players like these GREAT! little guys. Looks, size and being made of metal is nothing more than eye candy. These days I would not pay over the top for any Blu Ray Player and prefer the budget ones like this Sony UBP-X700 especially after the experience I had with the Panasonic one I brought for a Grand! only to break down after 13 months. I will be buying a new 4K TV this Christmas and I shall be getting this player to go with it. The other GREAT! thing about budget players is if they break down they are easier to replace. My Sony BDPS4100 still works fantastic and for the £65 it was a pure genuine bargain and Sony do make amazing budget Blu Ray Players without a doubt.
I totally disagree. This player is cheap and nasty with a poor, flimsy build quality. Would be interesting to see what AVForums think of the Dolby vision “always on”implemented by Sony on the firmware update. Having to turn dv on and off manually is frustrating .Will Sony eventually update with an auto function that is,output Dolby Vision when the disk has Dolby vision and hdr10 when the disk is only hdr10.
bitTorrenter Incorrect. When Dolby Vision is turned on the player outputs everything in Dolby Vision format...resulting in incorrect colours and dynamic range. Sony should have done MUCH better than this......
I love my X700 and I don't hear anything as far as it being noisy. Love the dual HDMI outputs too. Running an older non 4K Sony receiver at the moment. ... J
Anyone bought this recently? I read it had so many bugs like freezing. How is it now after sony firmware updates? Please reply I am interested in this player. Its very economical to buy.
I bought this player in February. Of the 40 4K-UHD blu-rays that I own, some Warner discs do not work well. That's right, image freezes do happen. You have to turn everything off and turn the player back on. Not great at all. Concerns with The Dark Knight, Matrix 2, and 3 Harry Potter. Only Warner movies. It's weird...because my player is up to date, the firmware is from August 2021.
Hi , Somebody knows if this player has cinavia If I play a 4k movie by USB. And if make a pass through dolby atmos also by usb using HDMI output to an atmos receiver? Thanks!
Most likely mate. Using Cinavia was mandatory for manufactures starting from 2013, I believe. BuY a second hand inexpensive player such as the Pioneer Bdp 140 for bootlegs, ripps and copies, it doesn't have Cinavia and it's also 3d compatible.
I know this sounds stupid but need a player that upscales dvds nice i have a lot of high quality dvds of old anime and stuff i know it shouldn't look great but the inbuilt player on my tv does better upscaling than my ub900 with dvds they just didn't care about that part.
Best looking 4K ultra hd blu ray player, i bought this near christmas for myself, very handy and also quickly use, this player is much better than ps4 Pro's player, what i am noticed, but ps4 Pro is game consol, it's very handy and also quickly use game consol!
Any owners confirm if they have finally released firmware to allow dolby vision to switch automatically each time and not have to manually slect? Also is dolby atmos only from drive or also from usb port?
Robert McDonald How are you finding it? Does it have a dolby vision always on feature? Meaning you have to turn dolby vision on or off manually? Is the player noisy when the disk is spinning?
Hello AVForums, i would like to know, please, if when using the x700 to listen sacd the device recognize automatically the CD without using a TV screen to select the audio option on the menu? I'm asking this because the blu ray player don't have a frontal display.
Absolutely not, you forgot to mention how dim this Dolby vision profile is on Sony Tv’s. I have this player and it has crashed numerous times. There seems to be an HDMI problem with dolby vision on Sony Tv’s. This even occurs through the Apple 4K TV
I had the player with the Dolby vision update. It's rubbish. In order to play a non Dolby vision disc you have to manually go onto the settings and turn off the Dolby vision. Same again with 3d blu rays. In addition, prior to the update I could check for new software updates. Post update, this function no longer worked even though I had network connection. I contacted Sony support (disgraceful service). Was advised to try an other TV, hdmi cable and network. Wtf? I sent mine back to Amazon for a full refund. Went for LG 970, a little bit noisier but a much better player without the need to constantly go into the settings.
