sony would have to pay for dolby vision so im guessing thats why they and many other manufacturers might leave it out.

@@JasonHendry22 . Well the cost of the license is pretty small comparison to the cost of the player. I am guessing the margin more than covers the cost of licensing. In fact it’s affordable enough that Sony has rereleased the x800 (m2) with vision support for the same price. It’s not in Sony’s best interest to add support for a paid product after you have already given them you money though.

@@robertt9342 Sony UBP-X800 cannot support Dolby Vision because it's SoC can't handle it hence X800M2 release in 2019.

I own this player and it is awesome...so tired of seeing the "no dolby vision" comments...The studios and 4k disc manufacturers have put their pick in the ground on HDR...and that is how it will be...Dolby Vision will die the death of DVHS and HD-DVD in the very near future.

dolby vision is complete bull can hardly tell difference is you have a good TV. Will be buying this baby when I get back from holiday :)

From the reviews I seen Dolby Vision does a better job than HDR 10+. But these are both standards for Dynamic Metadata and I am guessing some movies may look better with Dolby Vision and some better with HDR 10+. Everyone will have their own personal taste.

I spent the last two weeks doing a comparison between the X800 and UB900 and the UB900 definitely sounds better! I watch movies more than music. The 900 has deeper and tighter bass, it has greater dynamic range and special effects can sometimes startle you. The difference in sound is even more obvious when you play Atmos material... The Panasonic sounds louder, bigger and more robust than the Sony but you need a good sound setup to hear the difference. Incidentally, I also use the Yamaha RXA 3060 as the reviewer. I disagree with what hi-fi as far as sound goes. The UB900 is better in that department. I emailed yourselves about this last week and yet to get a response.

UBP X800 1000ES and X800M2 1100ES are best 4K Ultra HD Blu ray disc players on the market.

@@RobertK1993 Nope! The Panasonic UB9000 mops the floor with them. The two kings in that department now are the Panasonic UB9000 and the Raevon X200! The Sonys don't belong in the same league.

It seems like there will be no Dolby Vision software update for this excellent player. Any news on an HDR+ update?? HDR+ being a lot similar to Dolby Vision but its open sourced and not proprietary based like Dolby Vision, therefore cheaper to implement. Samsung have stated that all their 4k 2017 tvs will get a HDR+ software update in due course.

WARNING!!!!!! --- DO NOT BUY the Sony UBP-X800M2 !!!! Their website help forum is LOADED with people whose machines freeze up constantly. I purchased one at BestBuy 2 days ago, and it won't play ANY Blu-ray disk without locking up!! The crappy machine won't even eject the disk. You have to unplug from the wall and reset just to get the disk out. I've tried about 8 discs so far. I wish I had read the forums before purchasing, because this is a COMMON OCCURRENCE. SONY MAKES JUNK!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be returning mine to the store this evening.

Yep! The 1st X800 I bought was so frought with this problem it was nearly unusable. I returned it to my local store for an exchange. The exchange unit froze only a handful of times but has been almost perfect in the 2 years I've owned it. It still won't play any DVD from Disney though..... Whether it needed some time to break in I'll never know.

2 things that genuinely frustrate me about this player. - Why no RU-vid button on the remote? I use RU-vid way more than Netflix. - Why no Dolby Vision? It's obsolete before you even open the box.

Dolby Vision is still quite in its infancy, but it does seem a strange omission.

Why cant it receive an update like their 2017 TVs? Inbuilt obsolescence is infuriating. Sony has just announced their first 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray. It's their own studio's movie: Resident Evil: Vendetta. A 4K Dolby Vision Blu-ray that their own player wont be able to play. Ridiculous.

Sony UBP X800 is great player despite lack of Dolby Vision HDR the UBP X800M2 is better.

panasonic ub900 still best 4k blu ray are the moment but have to wait and see if oppo 205 is any better for picture quality. sony best value for money though

Mine wont play SACD shows it playing but no sound yet plays normal CDs and DVDs, tried getting in touch with Sony just send round in circles with FAQs then when you get to a chat no one is available same as by phone. I tried sending a message direct then it said my phone number was unrecognised etc etc I am thinking of selling this piece of junk and getting a dedicated SACD player

Just bought it and am enjoying it quite much. Mine's REGION "A". But man, if it only were a REGION-FREE player. Wish there was a hack to make it so. (wink, nod, nudge, nudge...)

No front display or stereo analogue outputs is just mean, there is no reason to omit those at all. If it had them this player would be perfect.

I'm looking for a player that will play my media library from CD all the way up to 4K Blu-ray. However, I want one with a digital display built in so that I don't have to turn on the TV to use it as a CD player. The Sony UBP-X800 does not look like it has such a digital display. Is there ANY good quality player on the market that has a digital display that will play all my discs?

im leaning towards the x800 only because it has DSEE on it (and the idiots did not put it on their next little follow up model the sony 700.the 700 looks like china junk anyway has external power blok sony should ashamed that they cant do better.and whats with that jump to coaxial digital output sony were always doing optical out on their stuff at least give us that if you drop rca audio outputs

Nope. Gets atmos though. No way Sony is going to give you a licensed product after you have already given them you money. However you can always buy a second player with that fancy upgrade.

Hi, I have a 1080p Sony HW40ES projector and I'm looking for a quality built, full size bluray player to replace my 4 year old Sony(BDP-S5200) player. So would you guys recommend buying this UHD player to use entirely for standard bluray playback, or not? If really like to have a full sized player sitting in my A/V rack, so I need to know if the X800 would be a good fit for my setup... FYI, I have a Onkyo TX-NR808 receiver with HDMI 1.4a inputs, so I'm really not sure if that will be an issue with the X800's HDMI 2.0 output for video. . . thanks in advance!

From all my research the Panasonic is still king when it comes to picture quality but for some reason if you have a 4k tv from 2015 (like I do) you should go with the oppo. Something to do with native 10 bit. I'm so confused on what player to buy. I want the one with the best picture quality. I have a Samsung 2015 js9000 65". Any help would be appreciated!

You heard a difference in sound lol. Both used the Yamaha receiver. Which means they'll sound the same.

This Sony UHD player is the biggest heap of junk around. I paid good money for it, and it's so fragile in an electronic sense. I have a pissy $100 4k media player that virtually plays anything you throw at it, and, anything it can't play, you can "reverse" out of, and it's all good. I try and stream stuff over my network to the Sony, and 40% of the time, it plays, the other 60%, it freezes, yet my $100 media player will play those same media files. The Sony UBP-X800 is junk. There's not even a power switch on the back, so when it freezes, I have to move my cabinet to get to the power point.

Not even comparable products. How good is you media player at directly playing discs? A disc player is best for playing discs and you media player is far better at playing media.

can the iplayer be removed. im from the uk and i cut cable ages ago so would not want bbc iplayer or any other terestrial uk channels there on the screen?

Hi - We purchased the Sony UBP-X800 at a Best Buy store in the US on Nov. 12, 2018. After doing a bit of quick research on the internet, I found that Amazon is advertising this model as "Region Free." I've never heard of a region free blu-ray player, so I'd like to know if the unit we just purchased has this capability or not. If anyone can help us make this determination, we would be most grateful - Thank you.

We haven't done a comparison, but we've been told it's loosely based on that model but with a number of improvements inside.

@@eugbrat My second one has always had the latest update and I checked again last night. Still won't play Disney.... I have another Sony DVD player from 2008 and another Sony S-360 from 2011 as backup. So no one plays any Disney material on the 800 anymore.

This player only has digital output, but reviewer talks about how different audio frequencies sound from this player? WTF? Zeros and ones don't change from player to player, the only thing impacting the audio is the DA converter and amplifier used in the receiver. Don't be stupid.

I'm still wondering if other people are feeling a lack of bass from this unit. I have to turn the volume knob up more than my last player and the sound is less punchy.
