In this video I talk about the Sony UWP-D wireless audio kit that I use with my Sony FX3 and A7iv. I show how it's possible to send audio from one shotgun mic to two cameras as well as many other configurations. I also talk about how I've modified my Sony FX3 Rig to work with this setup and rig my Sony A7iv as B camera.
Below are links to all of the kit shown in this video. Please be aware that these are affiliate links and I can make a small commission on anything purchased using these links however it will not effect the price you pay for the items. Thanks very much for supporting my channel.

Excellent video. I bought into the two channel Sony system. I’m going to try purchasing one single receiver to see if I can do the two receivers with one transmitter that you spoke about. Happy Holidays.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
That would be a great setup Walter and I'm sure that will work in the same way and give you even more options. I wouldn't have thought there would be any limit to the number of receivers as long as they are tuned to the same frequency as the transmitter. It would be fun to test with many cameras although that would be a very expensive test :) Happy Holidays to you too.

Nice overview. Have been looking for an on-camera solution. Can strongly recommend the newer Smallrig half cage. It's small and light enough to keep on all the time, and has an incredibly helpful arca swiss built in. So if using arca tripods and the rest, no need for plates.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Hi Michael, thanks for the recommendation. The baseplate I have on my A7iv also has the arca Swiss built in which is how I mount it to my tripod. If SmallRig did something similar to the FX3 half cage with HDMI protector and 15mm rod holder I could be tempted :)

Ive been really appreciating your FX3 video series as a new owner myself. My internal mics (and internal mic on body-not handle) seem to have stopped recording audio and I can’t work out why. Are there any settings I might have missed? I have sound recording turned on and up…
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
The internal mic won't record if the handle is attached and switched on. You can switch off the handle using the button on the side of it which should enable the on board mic again I believe.

Hi Paul. great video as usual :) Keep rocking! One question... I have Sony fx3 and uwp-d26 with Sony SMAD-P5 adapter. It amazing combo but I have one strange problem. When I use Sony SMAD-P5 I can't control audio level on the camera... Do you know what can be a problem? So when I go through top handle XLR with my uwp-d26 than audio control on camera working, but when I using Sony SMAD-P5 I can't control it in camera menu...
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Hi Vladimir. When using the Smad P5 you have to adjust output levels in the receiver menu as it’s fully digital.
@Superjeanmarc

The ability to power the receiver directly with the Mi Shoe is absolutely brilliant... yet, as unlike the FX6, the FX3 doesn't have a second mi Shoe on the handle, it's pretty much useless. I personaly always use the FX3 handle, and I have the same small rig extensions that you use... The system seems to be also quiet bulky.. I use the AVX, and beside the short range, the system is really nice for a solo shooter.. Very compact, and zero configuration.
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Yea it was a bit of a shame they didn’t put an MI Shoe on the handle but you can use the XLR inputs with the handle so it’s not really a big problem and I wouldn’t say it’s useless at all. The AVX system looks pretty good but I really like having the option to put the receiver directly on the camera and still getting similar quality that you can with XLR inputs.
@Superjeanmarc
@Superjeanmarc Год назад
@@PaulJoy "Useless" was probably a bit exaggerated.. what I meant was that with the Fx3 you can't take full advantage of the Sony Mi Shoe.. Having the receiver powered by the camera and connected without any cable is really huge.. (As an FX3 user I really appreciate your videos that are extremely clear and straightforward to the point.)

@@Superjeanmarc I'm looking to buy a lav system and currently that's the thing that's bugging me about the UWP because I use an FX3 as well...the AVX looks great and compact but I've been skeptical about the range and dropouts due to frequency. I see that you shoot a lot of doc work out doors like for vice, have you found the AVX to be reliable, are you still using the system? Thanks!
@Superjeanmarc
@Superjeanmarc 8 месяцев назад
@@Videosbyme278 yes, using AVX pretty much all the time. In general very reliable. At Vice I was using also the classical G3 transmitters, pretty much the same in terms of reliability but bulkier and using AA batteries. I prefer the AVX. Which they would upgrade the product with internal recording and usb-c instead of micro usb for charging

Hi Paul, thanks for the great video! Can you explain the benefit of using two single channel receivers instead of a dual channel receiver? Would be much appreciated!
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Hi Alejandro. The main benefit is that you can send an audio signal to two cameras at the same time. If your just using a single camera then a sun channel receiver will be a more compact solution and allow you to receive an input from two mics to the same camera via the MI Shoe.

@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy Год назад
Thanks Phil. I've not tried the DJI Mic but those clip systems are good for ease of use and weight saving for sure. I don't have any problem at all with the receivers on my RS3 Pro, they are not that heavy but do make the rig taller especially with the antennas sticking up.

@@PaulJoy can the Sony XLR Plug be plugged straight into a mixer and record?
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy 6 месяцев назад
Yes you could connect the XLR output from the receiver to any recorder that supports XLR. The XLR transmitter can be connected to an XLR output on a desk or mixer allowing you to send pre mixed audio out to the camera as well, I often do that if filming events where speakers are being handed wireless mics or using tie mics supplied by the production crew.

Hi Paul, I'm thinking of getting the UWP 27 microphones with dual channel receiver for my FX3. Would I be able to use it with the top handle through regular XLR input, and operate it through the handle?
@PaulJoy

Hi, yes but you would need to use the two 3.5mm outputs on the receiver in to the XLR inputs using cables. Unfortunately there’s no way to use the MI shoe digital connection with the handle attached.

Hi Paul, Love the videos! I recently bought a FX3 and a URX-941D. When I insert the receiver into the hot shoe my audio record level becomes greyed out, leaving me no control over levels. I would prefer not to use the handle and just go directly into hot shoe with the wireless, but can't seem to get it to work. Is there something I'm missing?
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy 6 месяцев назад
Hi there. Yes, that's because the signal is digital so there's no analogue control in the same way as when you're using the 3.5mm jack. If you need to adjust the recorded level what you need to do is go in to the menu on the receiver and adjust it's output or attenuation level as required.

Hi, I own the same Sony mic kit and was using it on a Sony A7iv (not mine) expecting to get fantastic audio out of it but, for me it was really noisy; that sort of white noise/background hiss you get from rubbish mic pots. I also found the connectiong to be dodgy, the slightest movement would effect it.. Im sure the kit works as i use it on my FS7. Any idea what i could have been doing wrong?! (I dont own an A-series camera so no chance to trouble shoot it myself. Thanks
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy 10 месяцев назад
I use it with my A7iv without issue so my guess would be that it must be something to do with the MI shoe on the camera if it is sensitive to touch. Have you tried connecting it via the 3.5mm mic input? I would start by cleaning the contacts on the MI shoe and receiver with contact cleaner and see if that helps at all.
@baudoj
@baudoj 10 месяцев назад
I did try with jack input and that sounded terrible too! but I was in the moment so couldn't work out if I was doing something wrong, so i just stuck with 'noisy' MI shoe setup. I did actually try it on an A7Sii (before the job to compare) which was exactly the same in terms of noise but went with it as I though i could easily clean it up (which it was ok to de-noise but definately not right). So, i'm wondering are the MI shoes very prone to getting damaged/dusty etc... I need to do some more trouble shooting. but I guess i was wondering if any settings on the Sony radio mics could have been giving me problems?
@PaulJoy
@PaulJoy 10 месяцев назад
@@baudoj Well if the 3.5mm sounds the same then it's not going to be a problem with the MI shoe as that's bypassed in that case. The weird thing is you say it's fine with the FS7, is that using the MI shoe?
