Sony Cine EI Adjustment Luts - Edit Faster & Easier!

In this video I show how I use Cine EI on the Sony FX3 to capture a range of different exposures and then how I use my custom LUT's to adjust each shot quickly so that it's displayed with correct exposure.
I demonstrate using a Sony FX3 and FCPX on the Mac however this same method will work for other Sony cameras shooting S-log3 with or without CINE EI. The LUT's should also work in other NLE's and operating systems too, let me know if they help on your setup.

Thank you! I made custom EI Luts with Davinci but It had problems with dismatch of contrast and saturation. It wasn't a big difference but If I put them side to side then I could tell. But it match the contrast and saturation as the base EI. I would use it instead of what I made

Hey Paul! Great video as always! I thought that CineEI was ment to be shot inly with the two native ISOs, and if you modift the ISO that would not affect what the camera records, only what you see on the display. Seems I was confused. 😬

Yes and no. Cine EI does assume your using the two main base ISO levels but each of them will change the recorded gain level. Changeing the EI however is just adjusting what’s displayed, it is not changing the ISO.

Very cool video and thank you for the LUTs, Paul. Did you use LUTcalc? I ended up renaming them so they line up from +4 at the top to -4 at the bottom.

Hi Sky, I did yes. I actually made a set a year ago and have been meaning to share it for a while as I’ve found it a nice way to start grading log footage. I had to remember how I’d done it yesterday as I wanted to make a fresh batch with .3 variations.

Hi Paul, you are an amazing resource for the Sony FX3 and 30 so was wondering if you know which cable to use for connecting a Rode NTG4+ (internal power) to the Mic input port of the Sony FX30 (without XLR top handle)? Thank so much, Pete.

Hi Pete, thanks for the nice comment. I'm not sure to be honest. I'd def use the XLR inputs to the top handle with that mic though as you will get better quality than using the 3.5mm input on the camera even if you do find an adapter cable.

In an extremely controlled light environment like this one, then you have a stop of latitude to play with and you can do this CineEI trick without thinking. But in the real world, middle grey is only a small part of light management on set, and blindly pushing an exposure up this way can create a lot of blown highlights, when in many in many cases it might make more sense to add light to the dark areas of a scene. Learn to read log exposures. Learn how to use scopes and false color. And if you have a client who wants to see what the images might look like in post, use CineEI to feed them a modified exposure if required.

Yup, and that’s the reason why you cannot teach somebody a single way to correctly expose. There’s so many factors that it can take an entire career to learn the best solutions for the multitude of situations and there will still be setups that challenge you. All you can really do is to try and show people how to use the tools available so this example is really just to introduce enough variables so as to not overly complicate things whilst still showing where Cine EI can be a useful tool.
