Thanks, Just picked up the UX-90PS model , looks like new too. Got Windows 7 starter installed and thanks for the drivers especially the touchscreen and pointer pad driver :) just trying to find a browser that wont load it up like chrome or opera.
Nice, the black models look great, condition sounds awesome. I also expect you have a Japaneses keyboard on that model, which adds to the mystique of this machine. Enjoy!
@@JanusCycle Just order a 128GB mSata drive with the msata to Zif converter board. After installing over 250 updates for Windows 7 the IE11 works great for youtube mobile site and netflix.
@@Raptor50aus Sorry, I'd forgotten you asked me this. I found out that only the last model UX's with Core 2 Solo CPUs are 64 bit. Most are 32 bit only.
@@JanusCycle I managed to find a UX 32GB SSD on ebay so thats on its way. I did try an Msata SSD but the bios did not detect it. I used an msata to zif adapter board.
@@JanusCycle I seriously teared up a little seeing that. Words cannot describe the wonderful memories that brings back, I bet I watched that ten thousand times in my youth when that was released. Not only was the music to visual aspect beautiful, if I remember correctly wasn't it also compressed and wrapped up into a 64kB file size??
Not all came with an SSD. I've collected a UX380N and it has a 40GB mechanical drive. So it's obviously very slow and you can (softly) hear the drive when there is disk activity going on. But still, it's a nice little piece of technology.
Hi, thank you for the video! I got one today and apparently arrives on Friday. Mine comes with Windows Vista Bussiness. My experience with Vista was horrible when it came out, my question is do you think I should downgrade to XP or anything else besides Vista? I’d like it to run as smooth as I can. But to be honest I bought this to emulate Gameboy Games; NES etc. more like retro stuff That’s the main use I want to use it for please let me know what you think!
I've never tried Vista on the UX, or have much Vista experience in general. Windows 7 is often slightly faster than Vista. I would try Vista first and then probably install XP. The UX has a good amount of RAM for XP but less good for later versions of Windows. If you decide to reinstall, you will need all the drivers which I have uploaded here. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YSOyra0rq51ambYeVgYKdlEd-MCh-n1J
Janus Cycle thank you a lot! Will you recommend 7 instead of XP? If so, since I bought the unit without the docking station but only the unit, charging and carrying sleeve. Can I re-install from an USB? If so where can I download XP or 7? I have nothing, no cd’s to boot. Just the device. Again thank you for taking the time!
@@saulalvarez8439 You will need a USB DVD drive to install Windows 7. You can download a Windows 7 ISO file using Google and burn it to a blank DVD disc. If you are installing XP you can use a USB CD drive and blank CD instead. I think Windows 7 will run fine on a UX with 1Gb of RAM.
Janus Cycle thank you so much that solves a lot of doubts! I think I will go for 7 or even 8, last question (I promise) should I do 32 bit or 64 bit? Blessings! In your opinion what is the best usage for this device? In your case what do you use it for? (If/when you use it) I know is old tech but what can it do?
@@saulalvarez8439 Good question, you will need 32 bit versions of Windows. I don't use mine much anymore but sometimes I do on-site device programming over USB, sometimes up a ladder. Usually I just appreciate it and test out various things. When I need quick portable XP it's my go to machine.
i have the UX280P. mine came with a 40GB HDD, which i then replaced with a 512GB mSATA SSD via an IDE ZIF to mSATA adapter pcb. i also replaced the old WWAN module in mine with a microSD reader in the sim slot. the microSD is conncted to what i found to be an undocumented USB ribbon above the HDD. in that microSD slot lives a 256GB card, leaving me with approximately 768GB of total storage. I also run windows 7 Ultimate in mine, and i have the full suite of drivers archived and can provide them if needed.
These are parts of an interview with the VAIO UX developers saved from Sony 's website many years ago. I have sent Sony Japan a link to this video with my contact details so they can choose to respond directly if they wish.
@@LouisSubearth I found this archive for you. web.archive.org/web/20080821162849/vaio-online.sony.com:80/prod_info/vgn-ux17gp/interview/index_body.html
Nice video :) I just got a VGN-UX27GN from a friend with no battery. Could you write down the battery part number so I can buy one used or new somewhere? Thank you.
@@JanusCycle thank you. I just ripped the HDD cable as I was replacing my internal 40GB dead HDD. I will try to solder the broken traces under my microscope.
I bought mine from eBay many years ago when they were cheaper. There are hardly any on eBay these days and the prices are rising. Because they are becoming less useful and more collectable. If you are looking for a good handheld computer to use rather than collect, then consider the GPD Win 3 as a modern alternative. If you are a collector then consider that there may be even less offered for sale in the future, and maybe higher prices, maybe.
I already installed Windows 11 in a later video and it was challenging. So I tried Tiny 11 later sill. But I think I need an even lighter version of 11.
i well remember when Bill Gates showed off the OQO which was a competitor to the UX and thinking this form factor was the future now that there was serious competition, but it died pretty quickly because it was too much of a compromise in computing power.
I think they were just ahead of their time, I could easily see these devices having become commonplace if these had been the focus for manufactuers in the late 2000s and early 2010s as opposed to smartphines
The Core Solo CPU and GMA 950 GPU in the VAIO UX is way to slow these days. Have a look at the GPD Win 3 instead. It's exactly what you are looking for. www.gpd.hk/gpdwin3
@@JanusCycle thank you so much for the quick reply bc every other big YT that talks about these things dont ever respond and i send multiple comments on different videos askig questions about whatever the topic is and i get no response yet they expect me to sub to them ur the first to respond and thank you so much im truly grateful
@@kaspermp.3.495 You are welcome. I hope you find the portable gaming system you are looking for. I really like the GPD Win 3 and hope to get it when I can afford one.
The first was the bubble memory in GRID, then Flash disk on HP Omnibook 300:-) moreover lets not forget about early dos handhelds like poqet and atari:-)
All great tech. I'll be making a video about an early flash based DOS handheld this year. And maybe adding a mechanical hard drive to it just for fun :)
I have played the Dolphin emulator but not on this computer because the new Dolphin won’t run on XP, needs 7 and I haven’t installed 7 or 10 on this yet
