I’ve had the same research experience. I always wonder if each person has their own bias. I think to be fair these videos should start being a 3-way comparison. Side by side leads to a bias without context. I’d love to see the Epson LS12000 in between two others, better/worse. How bad can “the best laser” Epson offers be… like throw in the LS11000 or 6050 for context.

This is a helpful comparison video. The description of the two products, though more complete with the Epson, and the detailed, thoughtful side-by-side review was helpful in understanding the merits of each product. It really seemed to by Sony's better image versus Epson's better enclosure.

I actually live in DFW and was contemplating between this Epson and Sony as well. I saw this video and decided to go check it out myself at they're showroom. The Epson was great but I gotta say the Sony was way better. It was more detailed and over all a sharper image. Only took me a few minutes to come to that decision too. Both are impressive projectors but ill be going with the Sony for sure! Definitely recommend anyone in the DFW area to check out they're showroom; very friendly and very knowledgeable!

Don't be fooled into thinking the Sony is more resolute....The Sony has a great deal of internal sharpening and processing going on..... I mean A LOT. The Sony is not as sharp/accurate as it may seem on first glance in this comparison. Two key moments in this video to pay attention to: (make sure to watch in 4K, I'm viewing on an OLED screen btw) At 7:49 notice the intense amount of sharpening on the Sony making the Grand Turismo copyright notice lower txt almost unreadable vs the Epson. The Sony, using its Reality Creation engine creates the illusion of detail and sharpness by adding contrast to edges. Seems like the image is Sharpened around 40-50%....definition of txt really bad as a result .... Epson looks as expected. At 8:00 notice the Epsons even dithering of the red side light glow on the Porsche 919. Sharpening/Over processing on the Sony has created banding in the red glow gradient. Both projectors are great, however sharpening doesn't necessarily make a better or more resolute image. I'm not seeing much if any better/increased resolution here from the Sony. If the resolution was really better or clearer on the Sony the text at 7.50 wouldn't have appeared so bad. The Epson seems honest and really good. I'd say the Epsons 700 usable extra lumens are far more valuable than the 'perceived' sharpness of the Sony shown here for my tastes.....particularly if pairing the Epson with a HTPC and Mad VR for instance. If resolution was in fact been better/clearer on the Sony then the text at 7.50 wouldn't have appeared so bad. The processing in the Sony I think is adaptively pushing the dark tones up just a touch also for more clarity to the darks when needed. All in all these are pretty standard "enhancement tricks" in Photo and video editing. Can be cool.....Can screw the pooch!

You'd have to view these in person to make a proper comparison. RU-vid and streaming will compress the image, the filming may not have been in 4k. Your device will process the image you see to some degree. All things being equal the Sony should give a more detailed image due to it's 4k panel that the epson lacks - particularly when viewing 4k content, of course (where you wouldnt select 'Reality Creation' on the Sony, that's more of an aid for 1080p).

Thank you for those accurate observations Paul. When 4K appeared, it seems it took away a part of the mystic cinema. We're used to watch movies with a shallow depth of field, where the character is drawn out of the background, everything around him is blurry. The motion blur vanished under True Motion/ Motion Flow option that many TV has now default. When I watch a film which is 4K, I have the impression I see all unwanted things, all the skin tone pores, all the details and it takes out the magic of cinema. I feel that Epson it doesn't boost the sharpness and details sharpening as I can see at Sony. The 8:00 with the red light is the best example of color banding made by enhancement tricks.

After seeing both of these I think a lot of the difference we are seeing in this video is down to how much artificial sharpening each machine is adding. When both of these processing in turned down or even off the look the same to the naked eye, so based on what I now know I think the Reality Creation on the Sony is set a lot higher than the Image Enhancement on the Epson.

From an installer/ owner of av stuff for the last 27 yrs, you kids are doing a fantastic job with on these reviews. I do have some doubts about the Epsons focus adjustment because it is notoriously ambigous with the 12000. I wish Epson would introduce a wobulation shut off for focus adjustment which would definitely eliminate the issue. It is possible to miss the seet spot easily, if it even exists and have a loss of detail as a result. Thanks for the video.

Interesting video. I've tinkered with the LS12000 settings quite a bit and my image doesn't look nearly as bad as the video. Maybe it just needs more adjustment? I ultimately choose the LS12000 because I read ENDLESS accounts of sonys panel degradation and that's just not something I want to risk. Not to mention on larger screens (135"+) the extra brightness is much appreciated in the Epson. Sony doesn't have a motorized lens like the epson but this isn't a dealbreaker.

Agreed I seen other comparison where the Epson is significantly brighter. In this comparison the Epson is actually lower in brightness than the Sony. The calibrater really dropped the brightness on the Epson. Both the Epson and NZ7 have similar sharpness and detail levels.

Hey there, yes we are on the latest released firmware. We did notice a slight increase in sharpness. When watching the projector on its own, it’s awesome. We have it in a separate demo room and everyone complements the picture. Both image enhancement settings were set at 75%. We may need to crank the Epson up a bit higher. My only gripe is with the absence of constant height variable width screen implementation for Cinemascope and Widescreen film presentation, as is the cinematograph industry standard for film presentation in true cinema auditoriums. Good comparison. But what I don't understand is how you placed the SONY projector on the shelf, since it expels hot air from the back, unlike the JVC which expels it from the front. You do not comply with the installation conditions indicated in the manual. That's my problem.

Hello to you. It would seem that the two projectors, calibrated according to you, do not have the same light output on the screen, to the benefit of the Sony, which is less powerful than the Epson. Where does this come from??? Thanks for this video.
@DivineAV
@DivineAV 2 года назад
Hey there, thanks for watching. Light output was exactly the same. They were both set around 75%. In the highest setting, the Epson is slightly brighter. In our measurements, we measured 2498 ANSI lumens on the Epson and 2146 on the Sony. At 75%, they were nearly identical with a slight benefit to the Epson. Both units are absolutely fantastic. I would say they are pretty much neck and neck except for perceived resolution, but that’s to be expected because we are talking about a native 4K projector versus a very good shifting projector. It seems to me eyes that the color tonality in Epson looks better than Sony. Not sure, what the exact color science of each video clip is, but lets say for example at 4:15, the image from Sony has a purplish, closer to magenta tint compared to Epson's more grounded, closer to earth blue gray tone. I also find Epson's build quality, as seen in this video to be better, even though Sony has the "cooler" Stars Wars type design. It would be nice for this video to have focused more on film content as well, since the main use for these type of projectors are for Home Theatre and not for gaming. In the final analysis, all these tests, more or less, are a bit blind and subjective since the image is being recorded from a wall or screen, and then re-encoded through you tube's compression etc.

The colors, the sharpness, the contrast, none of it was even close. Yeah, we will see about doing that one as well. But keep in mind, you’re talking about a laser and a lamp base projector. Also, the price is $1000 difference up or down, so definitely comparable in each direction.

@@DivineAV I know. I have seen the both at a AV dealer in Germany (both out of the box)and in the Netherlands (both calibrated). Both times I have a slight preference for the JVC; better HDR, more natural colors. Sony is very sharp, but looks slightly too processed (almost digital cartoon like).
