The Z3 Compact is coming up on its year anniversary, and it can be found unlocked for under $400. What you get for that is still excellent: a water resistant smartphone with solid software, loud speakers, a look and feel you can’t find anywhere else, and good battery life. No it’s not excellent battery life, the loud speakers are muffled, and you’ll want to make sure you’re careful with its glass finish and its earphone port. (Plus, we’d happily trade some of the software bloat for a better overall camera) … But unless and until Sony releases the Z4 Compact, nothing else out there is gonna give you the same power in such a tiny package. I have a question about this series "After the Buzz." When you review the device again, have you been using it since launch, or did you just re-get it and review it months later? From the intro I understand they just sent it to you, and you re-reviewed it... So... In theory you're seeing how an older device works brand new? Not after using it for a while... Hmm....

KentSpain85 Exactly. What's the point of having after the buzz series when you haven't even bogged down the phones with apps over the time? I'm not saying they should use it as a daily driver, but atleast have these devices along with you for occasional usage.

KentSpain85 agree. I have a sony xperia SP. Its a 2013 device with dual core processor and 1 giga ram. Damn low if u ask me. But when i bought it at may 2014 it looked fresh and fast. Today i cant stand it anymore. 1 giga of ram is just so low that i cant install many social apps mostly because SONY puts A LOT of useless apps that takes a good amount of ram. Plus each time u upgrade apps like facebook, instagram and twitter, it became more and more slow. I would follow his advice on the video and recommend you AT LEAST 3 giga of ram for this year and maybe late 2016. Skip this 2 giga of ram and i must tell you that i dont play games or movies. I like to browse a lot and use diferent apps at same time. ps: sorry for my bad english.

Bought mine 9 mos ago and I'm still happy with its performance. I have a 5.5 inch phone and at times I still come back to my Z3C for its single-handed usability. Only concern is its too slippery. Glass is glass.

Finally! It's been a long time coming! Bad battery life? Compared with nearly all the phones out there this has amazing battery life. But yes, Lollipop did mess with it. Though newer updates should fix it. Still, everything isn't all that bad. It still is one the best last-year-tech you can buy and live with. Not to mention the beautiful looks.

As a Z3C owner, I agree that lollipop hasn't been an improvement, but battery life, for me, is still great. I only wear the battery down if I do a lot of gaming. Other than that, standby time and endurance under casual uses of the phone are excellent. I take your point on the camera, but if you know how to deal with the manual settings, you can produce some really excellent shots and smooth video. The software stabilization actually does a fair amount of.. well... stabilizing. Too bad the HDR in this camera isn't nearly as aggressive as it should be.

Absolutely love these videos. Hopefully the recently released 5.1.1 update solves these battery issues and ram problems. Even with the bogged down battery life by Android 5.0.2, it's still better than most out there. The best phone I've purchased and I've most recently had the Note 2, iPhone 5s which was BORING, HTC One M8 which was superb bar the average camera. The z3 compact does it all, and does very very well. The processor is aging quite brilliantly. And the best part.. One handed use. I use this alongside the Nexus 7 2013 and they both work brilliantly for my needs.

I bought my Z3 Compact a week ago, and I was satisfied with and thought it was the perfect phone for me. HOWEVER, I decided to try if it really was waterproof (I know, not a good idea) and took a shower with it one day after buying it, deeming diving with the phone a bit too adventurous. I triple checked that the flaps were firmly shut, and I had read all the forums on the topic, including the risks. Of course, with my luck, the phone died the next day after having discovered that there was fog in the camera lens. I've sent the phone back to the retail shop, and I'm really hoping that they will replace it. But, again, with my luck with these kind of things, I fully expect them to accuse me of having handled the phone incorrectly, and will have to pay for everything, including a new phone. I'm devastated, I've just wasted heaps of money for having a phone for just 2 days, and will probably have to buy a new one.

Good phone, but a little small for my use. I like how Sony made a "miniaturized" version of the Z3, without messing up with the hardware, except screen obviously, and gave one-hand users a good option.

Great after the buzz Michael, ypu have clearly used the device a lot and are spot on with all your points. I love my z3c - it still performs really well, it cannot be underestimated how great 1 handed use is, the screen size is just big enough and the pocketability is wonderful. The flaws though are real. Mine is being fixed currently for the second time due to headphone jack issues. I used to find it near impossible to kill the battery in a day - since lollipop it will generally make it through the day but just and i do nurse it a bit in the evenings. Finally the camera is a real frustration, my superior auto mode produces very cold images and the 21mp manual photos are often good but that requires work and often the moment has gone. For me this is still in the top 5 phones you can buy at ANY price and current prices are great but do keep the flaws in mind.

Not a bad phone but if your gonna buy it I highly recommend get the Z2 instead of this. (Z2 cons: 3GB RAM, Full HD Display) (Z3 Compact Cons: 2.5ghz Processor (Z2 has 2.3ghz) )

I have the Z3 Compact and it's a amazing phone in a small size, not forgetting it's a lot cheaper than the Z3. I only thing I wouldn't recommend is upgrading to Lollipop because it hurts the battary a lot. I don't think this is Sony's fault becuase my brother's Galaxy S4 also noticed a huge drop in battery life after upgrading from KitKat and Lollipop.

Thank you for your video. I currently have an xperia z1 compact. Do you recommend me upgrading to the z3 compact? The only problem i have with the z1 compact are the speakers, it's not that great. I know the z3 compact has stereo speakers. Can you let me know if it's any better. Please let me know your thoughts.

I have been avoiding the z3c due to bad camera reviews and bought the galaxy alpha. However the alpha's camera was worse than on my old s2. So i bought the z3 and boy the cam is so much better. Auto mode work like 50% of the time, but once you select the right settings in manual mode the results are very pleasing. Don't trust the reviews saying alpha has a superior camera. U can't fix how e alpha destroys the picture with overprocessing.

I could get 4-6 hours of SOT from mid-heavy use on 5.0.2. Testing 5.1.1 right now, seems to be the same. You don't need a "special Sony dock", you can just order a magnetic charger off of eBay for 5 bucks. Works like a charm and no annoying flaps anymore. You forgot to include the speaker performance, that is terrible, wouldn't be so terrible without the waterproofing, but that again is much better than good speakers. Camera performance is best when you just ditch the "Superior Auto", manual is much better, especially at night. Fiddle with the settings a bit and you're good to go. My Z3C also makes that clicky sound, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

rotcataergeht Yes, also the display glue came off and had to replace display. Back camera also failed and showed back screen, replacing it didn't work.

Build quality is poor on this phone. Me and one of my friends bought it 6 months ago and w both had the screen come off from the phone at the top left corner. Apparently the heat melts the adhesive glue between the screen and the body. Now everytime I make a call the screen is turned off... Not to mention it's no longer waterproof. And I think this is why Michael has that clicking sound, the screen has detached from the middle. Also the speakers make the whole thing vibrate when the volume is up, the camera sucks really hard (even a Galaxy S4 has a better camera) the flaps are already flimsy and do not close properly, the back of the phone became full of scratches after a week of use. The small screen also has its negatives. It's not easy to type on it because the keys are small, so I sometines end up pressing the wrong key. The screen isn't sharp either, you can easily see the pixels on it. And if I use it typing for a long time my pinkie hurts because I use it to hold the phone to type with two hands (maybe I'm holding it wrong?) Positives: battery life (although it's gotten worse with Lollipop) lag free experience, near stock Android. Overall: I think you should avoid this phone. I'm looking to sell it but I'm gonna lose a lot of money :( I live in Morocco so the value of phones tend to drop like a rock, unless it's an iPhone. Also I can't repair it here.

With 5.1.1 the phone doesn't get hot so no screen problem, with a cheap plastic film for the back no more scratches (or replace it when there is), visible pixel only if you hold it at 4cm, magnetic charger to save the flaps, camera is ok and I'll never understand peoples who want perfectly clear photos from a phone... It's a gadget remember (until it has ois and xenon flash), the phone is a beauty packed with power... See u in derb ghellef someday ;)

Mohamed Amine Larabi It's great that 5.1.1 prevents the phone from being hot but it's too late now is it :p My screen is almost completely detached right now and I'm afraid it's gonna come off completely soon. I know it's just a gadget but there's no excuse for it to be a lot worse than the one in the S4! The pictures I take are horrible especially in low light :( Derb Ghallef could not help me with my screen :p

I had the z3 compact for about 8 months. I loved the phone but wanted a bigger screen so sold it and got a note 4. Still a great little phone though. And easily the best camera I've used on a mobile. The quiet speakers and the problem with the headphone jack (I had to send mine back) let it down.

They went from 4.3 inch screen on the Z1 compact to a 4.6 inch on the Z3 compact by reducing bezel. Should there be a Z5 compact (they seem to skip hardware generations), if they could get it to 4.8 inches and make it 1080p, it would be the perfect Nexus 5 replacement. Still a gtreat looking piece of hardware.

Having owned and used both z3c and z3, i'd have to say this. 1. z3 fits better in pockets thanks to its slimmer profile. z3c is chunky and stressful 2. My z3c has better colors and contrast than z3, which despite its 1080p panel offers a washed out display and bleeding edges/non-uniform backlight. Overall, i'd take the z3 but i wish it had a better display. (i think the display is a faulty unit problem).

And just to think I researched Taylor Martin's review of this phone just before I went to work. If I ever get this phone I'm keeping it on Kit Kat, seems like Lollipop is made for devices with 3 to 4 GB of RAM.

The Cameras on the Z3 Compacts at Sony Store Miami were very good but the quality control on speakers and ( some speakers better and even Cameras a bit different from unit to unit) Quality Control bothered me. I opted for Galaxy Alpha because it was/ is a much more rugged Device- does not look it but really is .

When other manufacturers use Sony camera modules (most prolific Samsung), MAGIC happens (terrific photo quality) But when Sony themselves use Sony camera modules, it's an absolute NIGHTMARE. (NOT good enough photo quality compared to Samsung, LG, Apple, Nokia) WTF Sony? You can't even get your OWN product right?

Honestly, I wouldn't hold my breath Haymkarran S bhalla. Sony has had THREE YEARS (Xperia Z1 to Z3+) to prove us wrong, and they consistently failed. Sony mucks up the software and gimps the camera, when Samsung can use the same hardware and produce world-class cameras on their phones. It's like Sony is not even trying anymore.

I like to have a phone that resist to water and dust for my hike, but i don't think the cover of micro USB port will last long if we charge it everyday. An alternate option is the docking station, but, for hiking, you know what i mean. Bref, i will just wait for the Z4C, with the USB port uncover like the Z3+

I'll Wait for the Z5 Compact, I can't live without my Qi Wireless Charging, Charging with wires feels so antiquated. The Reason why I say Z5 is because there is no Z2 Compact, Sony Jumped from the Z1 Compact to the Z3, So I can imagine them doing it again. Compacts only come in Odd numbers :P Not that it matters what it's named though. Give me a 4.6 Sony Phone with flag ship specs and Qi-Wireless charging and I'm good. I could live without the Glass back, I'm very conscientious about damaging that glass back, since glass is very fragile. I don't think they would do this but imagine a finger print scanner plus Analogue slider/stick combo that can also act as a home/extra button. That would be an amazing gimmick I would gobble up lol. It would hopefully work with games like a analogue stick or work as a mouse cursor (not that you would need it) I just think it'd be kool is all lol. probably inflate the cost of the phone as well, ah well them pipe dreams lol.

Actually I don't like glass back while I really like the translucent frame. I hope Sony will ditch glass back for the Z5 and Z5 compact. Then I will consider switch my Z3C to Z5 or Z5 compact.

Research these major flaws before getting this phone: 1. Self cracking back glass 2. Easily scratching camera lens (it's coated plastic) 3. Failing headphone port 4. Waterproof fails and general weaknesses of the port flaps. 5. Total denial by Sony Mobile about any of these issues. Check youtube, XDA forums, replacement parts reviews on amazon etc.

+jokamutta no need to wait z4, the real edition will be coming out soon is 5 series, they are M5 (it's enough to help your life with), C5 (pro-selfie), and Z5 (this is for a business man)

I just bought my sony z3c for almost a month. Im having a problem with the lower speaker it was buzzing and not functioning well, it was unbearable. So i decided to return it to sony and they decided to repair it. I was just curious will it still be water proof after the repair? Thanks

Metaru Elite In my country Sony is cheaper than other devices. Also, all of those you mentioned(exept nexus and LG) are shit, especially Crapple. All my family members use Sony and a lot of my friends use Sony. I think they are great. I only hate one thing- they didn't include Camera2 API in the newest update.

My Xperia Z3 compact's backlit display isn't working anymore the backlight isn't turning on but if I put a flashlight on the display and turn it on the screen still works I can see the U.I. touchscreen still functions just no backlight What should I do ? Should I get the entire display replaced or the backlight The popping sound on my Z3c compact when I squeeze it sounds different it's sounds like tiny pop rocks popping Help please

I bought the Sony Xperia z3 Compact about 2 week after it got out in the stores, i had it for about a month or so and then the headphone Jack just died one day, so i turn it in to get it repaired. After i get it back the mic on the phone would not function and that problem stuck around for 2 more repairs. At last i swiched phones and i must say the Xperia z3 Compact had some awesome software (Kitkat) smooth fast and battery was legendary Although the Camera was kinda shitty well atleast the Software of it. but the hardware of the phone overall just dident hold up.

I've always wanted a Sony smartphone. This year,i seriously wanted a Z3+ or Z3C but Sony for some reason decided to make it a carrier exclusive. That and the fact that the SD 810 makes the software/hardware very unstable makes me feel as though Sony is screwing themselves over lately. Now we're even hearing rumors of the Z5 and the Z4/Z3+ has barely been out for more than 4 months. I really,really was looking forward to getting a Sony phone,but it's like Sony themselves make it hard for me to even want one.

Alex De La Rosa what stops you from buying the phone unlocked? plenty of offers on ebay.if you limit yourself to only what your carrier provides you'll never have the phone you really want.

Verliebt of course,I know that. However,I'm still under age and my parents don't understand the unlocked payment and if I were to purchase one they'd complain it's too expensive and would heavily discourage me from buying it.

I seem to have multiple probs with my z3c. it shut down once n couldnt switch on. sent for warranty and i ended up 1 month without hp. now, i have prob with - notification tray (have to swipe few times) - alphabet i and j so hard to punch - alarm clock cannot us AM. only PM. - now people complaining of not hearing my voice whenever talking been using less than a year. any advice guys.

purchased this phone on November , it died on march for no apperant reason not charging not turning on and my warranty was not available in the country i was in , i threw it in a drawer and suffered a month with a borrowed Iphone 5 ( i didn't like IOS but after using it i hate it ) In April it turned on magically with no apparent problem and it worked until June and it died again , i got so mad that i smashed it after purchasing a Galaxy S6 with a credit card , i just hated the phone i needed a phone that just works . it was speedy and very reliable software averege display with little on the low side brightness , low volume speakers , bad camera it post process way too much , the best thing about it is battery life which i miss. i would give it 5-6/10

my 1 year old xperia z3 compact have two issues. swipe down notification bar not coming down because the top side touch not working . nw the capacitive button also gone. I have to use two app for doing both activity. one for notification bar and for capacitive button. what hell I will never purchase this xperia anymore. the life is only one year for the flag ship .

Planning to buy this for my mom as a back up phone for fb messenger or zoom coz it cost ₱2,050 (42.65 USD) for docomo/Japan version (in the Philippines as of Nov. 26, 2020). I don't know if it still supports those video calling apps and if the battery is still fine. I think those phones they were selling were refurbished. I can't afford that poco m3 that will released tomorrow which cost $129 i guess.. 😂

If Sony would do a two year contract with AT&T, I would buy this phone or the Z4. That's the only thing stopping me. I get iPhones every two years for under $200 & sell my old one for the same. I haven't bought a phone in 10 yrs.

PFT Burchell you just said you pay for anew iphone 200$ every 2 years, so you've been buying a new phone every 2 years.you're lucky if you can get 200$ for a 2 year old iphone, where i live at least, they're not Worth that much.if you'd really want a sony phone you'd get one unlocked. but you don't since you wont like changing from iOS to android and probably have to pay again for some of the apps.

my lollipop battery in the z3 compact (after the update from kitkat) malso fell, but, after i clena istalled the rom agian, it jumped from 4:30 to 5:30 hours screen on time, and after the 5.1.1 update, i jumped to 6hrs os screen on time, and that is with intensive use, social network, netflix, youtube, music, games plaus other things
