I recently got the 55 1.8 as the first lens for my a7iii. It's great! Going to get the 24-105 f4 as a daily run and gun lens - and then pick up the 35 1.8 as it shares the same filter size.
I have the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 ZA, I love that is is light and compact, gives very good optical image quality, I can recommend this Lens now and into the future.
I owned this lens. It's really sharp and fast af but the chromatic aberration is very visible at wide open and even up to f2.8 in a non-backlit situation (worst in backlit). Makes most of my videos unusable. Photos are bad too even after removing CA in Lightroom. I don't see much people talking about this though.
I do experience.. it's CA is very visible and in some cases very bad.. purple fringing on shiny and high contrast edges.. and green fringing on fall off areas
I tested it at a rental place for lens, and i wanted to see how it compares to my old zeiss pancolar adapted to e-mount, i couldn't see much difference, at 1.8 is better tho, but the CA took me by surprise and the minimum focus distance too, so basically I was getting only AF... I liked it but... I couldn't get that 100% sure sensation to buy it
james jackson cause Zeiss is Zeiss and once you’ll hear Zeiss cause it’s Zeiss. Lol but to be honest I like 35 and 55 so 40 would be in between. Plus the macro shots is a plus with better sharpness
First time coming across your RU-vid channel, to make a long story short - This is a great review and your sample photos are beautiful. I find your computer fan lights to be very distracting while i’m trying to focus on what you’re saying. I’m subscribing to this channel. I’m a Sony shooter and looking forward for more good content. Cheers ✌🏼
I bought mine used on eBay It’s really sharp but mine makes aperture blade noises from f2.0 just a little and from 2.8 on it’s noisy but at f1.8 no blade noise. I have read other comments on this lens with other people having same noise on the lens. Is this normal for this lens or is this problem just on some copies Did your lens make any noise over f2.0 and above?????????
Mario A It does it at any light conditions. It’s not extreme noise but it’s there. I guess it could be doo to its age and use. I paid $620 for it. Really sharp on my a7rii I’m keeping it.
5:12 how much % zoom in picture is that? I can't decide if any travel lens with 18-200+ which looks worse than the zoomed in picture or this I don't want carry 10 lenses around
Sony uses an internal focusing design and linear AF motor for quick and near-silent focusing performance and is weather sealed for working in trying conditions. Im i right?
I use A7II. And I have a 85mm FE lens 1.8. but I feel it's too zooming to use marriage documentation. I want a lens with a rather wide view and good for portraits. it would also be better if you could video. I searched RU-vid and found options on Zeiss 55mm 1.8. can it replace the 85mm role that I have? because I had to sell it to get a 55mm zeiss lens. Thanks for the answer🙏🙏🙏
Bisa bli. Saya pake 55 dan 85 dan lebih sering pake 55.. apalgi di sony kan ada apsc mode jadi kalo kurang dekat bisa pake apsc mode jadi 55 bisa jadi hampir sedekat 85..
Thanks for making great videos, very insightful. I am torn between the 55mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 plantar. I want something light and for video as well as photography. Your review and some other reviews I've watched all say similar things about chromatic aberration etc on the 55mm which is holding me back from making the purchase. I am wondering though, a lot of the reviews for the 55mm are from a few years ago and I was looking on the Sony website today, and it says about the 55mm "T coating reduces all forms of aberration". I'm wondering if Sony has made some design changes to fix the CA issues in 2020? Do you know about this? I'm new to photography, no one on youtube likes chromatic aberration, this lens seems to have it as a major problem going by the reivews, but yet you still give it the thumbs up? Can CA be easily fixed in post? Thank you.
@@StefanMalloch I thought that would have been obvious. So we can see the size on a camera, the weight/feel on a camera, how it focus’s on a camera etc. I mean a lens is for a camera so to just show is the lens alone is borderline a waste of everyone’s time.
Lol you just knocked a metal lens for being metal? Metal build is a good thing, it’s going to last forever. Also there’s a difference between chromatic aberration and just the natural color that’s out of focus. I’ve thought I had CA with another lens but when I looked at it with my own eyes it’s how it looked in real life. I don’t think the bird photo is CA but just a grey out of focus edge. I have seen almost zero CA with my 55 1.8. Sometimes that’s just how it looks and it looks similar to CA. My 50 1.4 planar though has a good dose of CA wide open. Once you use a lens with terrible CA you’ll see the difference.
