Josh, great video. Every review has pointed out the fact that Sony is really treating all the owners of the premium cameras with disrespect by not offering the easy firmware updates the we all deserve. We need to start a mass petition now! What a joke that my FX3 has to suffer with focus breathing! Rant over.. please keep up the fine work that you do.
Thank you! Sony users and reviewers are definitely upset with the lack of firmware updates and support for the older higher end cameras. We will keep talking about it as much as we can and hope that Sony will listen.
I was thinking about purchasing an FX6. No chance now. If these specs are going into a $2k camera, I will wait for significant improvements to the cinema line.
I have a feeling that the ZV line is becoming a “clearing house” for Sony camera tech, and they will be having massive improvements to sensors and processors in their higher tier lines rolling out soon.
It's funny because I was thinking about a job I did two weeks ago where we rented an fx3 and had a second fx30 and also an a7siii. If we used the ZV E1 the job would have failed because of the length of filming we had to do. If it was the other way round, there would be a riot at the price difference. But surely the fx3 will crash in price? A fan and different buttons doesn't cost Sony an extra 1700. The pricing doesn't make sense anymore. Even if I can't buy the cheaper version because it's too unreliable.
So the lesson I learned about dealing with Sony never pay for their premium cameras If you have patience you will eventually be able to get the lower priced re-released renamed version of what that premium is
This camera makes no sense, the horse power does not match the chasis. What I mean is that you need a very high end computer to edit 10bit 4K 60 and other formats, there’s nothing “beginner” about the output, but there the User Experience is very entro level. Its probably just for professional RU-vidrs that already have other high end Sony’s bodies
I think this is the perfect example of Sony being great on paper but the delivery is underwhelming. If they made it $1500 and had 0 overheating, it would have been a supercharger version of their RX line.
it's a tough sell at that price, I would prefer to get the R8 as it oversamples from 6K, get an extra battery and the 15-30 stabilzed lens, they both would have great AF but I like the face only mode on the R8, all the AI stuff on the new ZV E1 can be done in post,
Honestly, I dont understand all the hype with this camera. Do people realize that they'll pay $2,2k (a professional pricetag) for a camera that only does video, has a cheap plastic construction and overheats?!?! How cames that a video-only camera overheats? Thats insane. Sony, you had only one job... For exactly the same money I can grab a S5 IIX, which has professional features, good construction, does well video and photos, has a cooling system and outstanding video capabilities...
Actually for 2200$ i can get used mint conditions A7siii... so i am not loosing anything... cant imagine paying more than 50$ and not getting third exporsure wheel... like it is a camera... its a must to have basic controls for basic operations
But not having all this software features is not good feeling, but 100% trade it for better ergonomics, nice evf, 2 card slots, BASIC WHEEL DIALS FOR BASIC EXPORSURE OPERATIONS (my god, cameras without normal buttons and basic wheels must be banned, can you imaging selling car with "touch feature" for pedals and turns....)
@mipmipmipmipmip May be look in the mirror to find a fun to look at, it is not the first camera that i buy gray, and that gave me better customer support than officials during this artificial crisis. May be 1 year warranty is not so much, but even if something goes wrong with modern plastic overpriced toys, it is still will be WAY cheaper to deal with it by my self in repair center.... jeez
......my first job with my FX3 was on a hot day 32C and I got about 30 minutes before it was shutting down. Limped through the day with 20 minutes at a time. Recovery time about 5 minutes. That makes the E1 unusable in high summer or hot interiors.
I have had zero issues with overheating on the FX3. Please make sure you have the Auto Power Off Temp setting set to high and you shouldn’t have a problem.
I’m sorry but you sound like a complainer. Sony taking parts and making new camera AT A LOWER PRICE is innovative and benefits everyone. If anything this cameras software AI tells you Sony is far more innovative then Canon or Nikon ever will be. Sony isn’t crippling anyone. It’s allowing new tech to become lots more creative to photographers. You are only thinking of dollars and cents like an accountant for people who bought more expensive higher end cameras. Cameras are for creatives not accountants
Should I get the ZV-E1 over the ZV-E10? I was planning on getting a FX3 as a video making came and keeping the ZV-E10 for vlogging, maybe I should jump the shark and get the ZV-E1 and ditch the ZV-E10?
sony ZV-E1 far too many compromises. without ND filter!!! unconvincing stabilization and case that heats up. So many reasons to say this is not a good case …
My only thing is the vertical content issue that the Panasonic LUMIX G DC-GH6 solves. And it's a much cheaper camera but Sony absolutely has the best video quality every time that's the frustrating part given this is a vlogging camera!
Great thoughts Josh! For me this is a bit disappointing, if it had 4K30 that does not suffers from overheating it would be amazing, but seeing people reporting overheating appearing in 40-50 minutes and the recovery time is not that great...canon did not pass great 3 years ago with little better overheating times so I think as summer comes this will be interesting. If you are in this price range you can chose some better options from sony/canon/panasonic. But this camera shows just how strong Sony fan base is, considering how much hate canon got for the overheating and micro hdmi 😅 Canon did much better I would say with R8 and the placement on the market regarding price. I guess all companies are starting to recycle their chips and sensors which is great.
I'm really leaning towards the ZV-E1 for my nighttime planespotting shots. I don't need long runtimes, dual SD slot or full size HDMI, just a light, compact, low-light beast with S-log3 and I think the ZV-E1 hits that sweetspot. Have you tried it with long(er) lenses like the 70-200, 100-400 or 200-600 in any panning shots and if so, what are your thoughts?
Hello, thank you for your videos . I would appreciate hearing your recommendation. I'm considering upgrading from my Sony a6400 to a full-frame camera, and I'm facing a dilemma: whether to spend more and get the FX3 or save money and go for the ZV-E1, getting pretty much the same image but with the remaining funds invested in more lenses, etc? I shoot a variety of content, from events to weddings, so my direction is quite diverse. I really want to upgrade and start to make more professional videos, but I’m kinda stuck between these two and don’t know what to choose.
Josh thanks for this video, is a good one! I was looking a comparison of this new ZV-E1 with the FX3. I think this camera is announcing a general upgrade in all the video line. I think I will wait for a new FX3...4?
I like it but I really think the Small differences in the cameras and firmware updates make me feel like they are taking advantage of some of their customers. I should not feel penalized for buying a flagship camera. However, when profit tremendously exceeds innovative practical solutions for the customer it may lead to unhappy consumers.
The camera does not need two card slots, it is for vloggers, not professionals. Likewise, vloggers dont need a full sized HDMI port. If you want the professional version of this camera, buy the FX3. This camera was not made for you. And FYI, focus breathing requires extra pixels, which, as I understand it, this sensor does not have.
The title of this video is about how the ZV-E1 compares with the FX3. That’s why I was pointing out those differences. I’m not sure if you watched the entire video but I talked about who the camera is for and how it’s not for me. The ZV-E1 and FX6 both have focus breathing compensation. They also have the same sensor as the FX3 and A7S3.
Nah. Too expensive for a B-cam. Too light on features and single card slot to justify getting versus the A74 for $300 more or getting the FX30 for $500 less.
Those are APSC lenses and the ZV-E1 has a full frame sensor so that won't work. If you are curious about comparing those two lenses, my buddy Geoff over at Reach Films made that comparison: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gd-12clRhz8.html
Great video, btw. What is the lense and cam you are using for shooting this video, and what log are you using, I think the color grading is so good, and I would like to know what lut did you implement
Thank you! The main camera is the Canon R6II with the Sigma Art EF 28mm F1.4. I don't use LUTs and grade everything myself. I show you how I do my exposing and grading in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JCDaz1Ewirg.html
Yeah, you FX3 and a7s iii people do complain a lot. Haven’t heard so many complaints on so many videos, about any other camera(s). Yeaaah, I know, money, money… on your part, their part… I’d be frustrated too. But, those are 2 year old cameras, man… I know, back in the day, a camera was supported even 5 years! But, we live in a world nowadays, when cameras are being released so often and people don’t buy that much, I feel. I mean, if you buy an a7s iii and a good lens, I won’t be searching for another camera in the next 5 years or so… Sony knows that. All these companies. That is why we will never get the perfect camera. Or long time support and updates. It is a pity. Such a beautiful camera like the FX3 or a7s iii to not get updates anymore and newer features. But, please stop complaining. Before we all start hating this RU-vid world. I feel your pain.
That is why I watch Cristopher Frost before I buy a new lens. If that lens has focus breathing (I mean, a LOT), then I won’t buy it. Hell with focus debreathing features. If I spend 2500 dollars, than that lens better not be focus breathing or anything else. You feel me? 2500k and a focus debreathing crop on top? Bruh…….
One of the reasons we complain about these things publicly on RU-vid is to assist in getting these companies to help out their customers (me and you). If they can provide software updates for new features, they should. Of course if there are hardware limitations then it makes sense they don’t. Things like these updates are what help keep users within the same system longer and recommend their friends and colleagues buy them too.
Great video! It got me thinking...I recently picked up the FX30 (as a b-cam to my a7iv). Would you suggest switching to the ZV-E1? I shoot mostly indoors and lens isn't an issue. I can still return the Sony 11mm 1.8 that I got for the FX30.
@@Josh_Sattin Overheating is probably a concern for me. The a7iv already isn’t the best and I was thinking I can just leave the fx30 recording for things like “top down” shots and not worry. I guess I need to assess my lens situation and what works best for my needs and go from there.
@@Josh_Sattin Yeah! I guess I can use the FX30 as my "vlogging" camera too and I still have 26mp if I need to shoot some stills. Not as good low light performance though. 🤔 Man! Sony gave me a headache today. 😂
I just got an FX30 as a B-Cam to my FX3 and I would love to hear your thought comparing those two. They both have their benefits and drawbacks. I personally think the fx30 is the best option for professional use but I can definitely see how this full frame ZVe1 is going to entice many to get it, its feature-packed! Excited to see what the future holds
Here is my FX30 vs FX3 video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O8mMI0ppHjY.html I think if you need a super reliable video camera, I would choose the FX30 over the ZV-E1 because of the overheating.
For pro use absolutely the FX30. It’s not only about heat but overall reliability. The FX30 is robust enough to withstand a pro environment. I’d bet the ZV isn’t
At this price point, the Panasonic S5ii is still my favorite option for content creators right now. It's even a little less expensive than the ZV-E1 and you can get it with the 20-60mm kit lens for $2300. Sure, the AI features on the ZV-E1 are "nice to have", but the aforementioned negatives in several reviews really kill it for me. The S5ii is also a great stills camera, so really, it's the best of both worlds. Also, shooting in open gate adds some similar benefits as the ZV-E1 AI tracking does, but without the excessive crop.
I pre-ordered my ZV-E1 which will make a nice personal camera. While I don't have the FX3 I have the FX-30 and for paid work I think I would use that over the ZV-E1 since it has dual card slots and a fan. I have the A7v if I need that full frame look for paid work. I guess I will see how well the ZV-E1 does in May. Cheers.
a very well done comparison and great note about the kit lens - they should have definitely created something wide angle that would be useful for vloggers
At $2200 this is a no go for content creators. As you mentioned it’s a good B-cam. Vloggers or content creators would be much better served with the R8 which is $700 cheaper and does better photos.
@@Yupthereitism What are`the cripples on the R8? for a $1500 camera, The lens selection is not as large as on the Sony but they do have quite a few cheap RF lenses and a massive collection of cheap EF lenses are also available, And you are totally neglecting the photo side of both these cameras
Incredible how much you can say in depth about the camera you haven't touched yet 🙂 Just came from watching the iPhonedo & Undone's reviews so I've got me some facts from all three of you. Still, equaly confused if I should get the FX-30 that I've been saving up for. OK, the latter is a crop sensor and it crops in 120p but hey, I can livestream all day long with it on a tripod and a dummy battery. And from the perspective of client work, the ZV-E1 is a much more versatile camera, and I can still livestream (as I do now) with my trusty A6400.
great vid as always Josh! wondering if you think this ZV-E1 or the FX-30 would be better for RU-vid talking head and product reviews? I bought the FX-30 recently but not sure how to set product showcase on it since there is no dedicated button like on this ZV-E1. Is it really just a matter of turning off face/eye auto tracking and that simulates 'product showcase'? 🤔
That is a really tough call between those two cameras. FF vs APSC and also no overheating with the FX30. Try just turning face/eye detect off. I usually set that to the button on the lens, if you have a lens with that.
@@Josh_Sattin ahh sweet, ya makes sense! idk if full frame would make much of a difference for talking head and product review type shots.. would it? based on what i've seen at least on youtube as someone who knows little to nothing though :/ I do appreciate the super long record times and bigger body on the FX-30 for sure, think i'll stick with that!
@@seifbuys The only thing I like with full frame in the studio is that you get less distortion if you have a small space because you can use a longer lens. I don't care so much about shallow DOF.
Yeah a lot of people don't have a lot of space. I was using a 35mm on full frame for a while, but then had to use around 24mm on S35. There is definitely more distortion on a 24mm than on a 35mm, even when cropping in the center. Some people don't mind the distortion though, it's personal preference.
Not sure if u added this point it in your "Comparision" but the ZV-E1 also has the AI Autofocus system of the A7r5 making it a baby between both a7r5 and a7siii. i hope you're able to do an actual comparison when u can get your hands on a loaner unit. The files look amazing for what it is.
