Camera overheating is a common problem, especially in hot weather or when shooting for long periods of time in higher frame rates. If your camera overheats, like the Sony ZV-E1 is prone to, it may shut down especially in direct sunlight This can be frustrating and ruin your shooting experience.
The Ulanzi Cooling Fan is a small, lightweight fan that can be attached to the back of your camera to help prevent overheating. It has two speeds and a built-in thermometer so you can monitor the temperature of your camera. The fan is powered by a rechargeable battery or USB-C cable, so you can use it anywhere.

Great video! Currently using the Ulanzi Cooling Fan with my ZV-E1. In addition to videography, I'm using my ZV-E1 as my main webcam for Zoom calls. Without the fan at 720p 30fps and no SD card inserted, the camera's overheat warning comes on at around 45 min and will shut down at around 55min. With the Fan set at max (#2), I've had 2 hour Zoom calls at 1080p 30fps with the SD card inserted and the overheat warning never came on. The biggest drawback is that the small suction cups just won't keep the unit attached to the camera for more than 20 minutes. I basically use a hairband to keep it attached to the camera.

Amazing info! Thank you for this... I have to pin your comment because I didn't test it in this capacity, and I believe a lot of people are using the zve1 as you are, so I highly appreciate adding these details for others... And those results are super impressive! I have also seen people use rubber bands, which makes sense, so I'll probably do that too next time. Thanks again!

stumbled on this video and so glad I did!! overheating is talked about a lot, so I was a bit hesitant to pull the trigger on the Sony ZV-E1. The have released a new version that is $40 that no longer uses suction cups, and instead uses a spring mechanism to keep it securely in place. Haven't tested it yet as I just placed the order, hopefully this comes in handy when recording outside in the hot Florida sun!! Great video brother, cheers 🤘🏼
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 5 месяцев назад
Thank you so much, and I'm happy you followed your gut and bought the zve1 anyway. It's a brilliant camera and gets more here than it deserves... That being said, Florida can cook any camera, so I think that's a smart purchase of getting the fan. And I just saw they put that update out removing the suction cups. Too many of us complained, but it's good to know that they listened to the customers. I'm thinking of picking up an extra one... Best of luck and update me on how it works for you! Thanks again!!

Great video! I wrote to Ulanzi telling them that they have to improve the suction cups. Even with their sticky thing that goes on the back of the camera, the fan still falls off after just 20 minutes of use. Otherwise, the product is pretty good. It's really cheap so it's a no brainer, just have one especially if you're doing long takes and can check the camera every 15 minutes to ensure the fan doesn't fall. Not ideal but it's the best out there for now at this price point.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
I really appreciate that...and thank you for writing them! I have seen some people use rubber bands to hold them in place which is actually pretty smart and easy to do, but would be nice if you didn't need that! Yet, I agree, for the price, it's still a no brainer! Thanks again!!

Thanks for testing. While it's clear that it perhaps could work for some folks, it's also clear that to anyone using this, it will simply be unreliable and frustrating for 95% of users. Such a shame as otherwise the specs on the camera are amazing.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 19 дней назад
I definitely understand that frustration... I think Sony was aiming this camera to really be a travel/quick content camera as opposed to a main studio camera. That all being said, I've only had it overheat once (outside of this test) but I do know people who still use it for talking heads, and do find it overheats. Yet, I know this fan helps, but probably getting the Tilta fan system which is five times the price but adds as many times the functionality, so that's an option as well. I do think if you were looking for an amazing camera with a built in fan, I'd recommend the fx30, which is $300 cheaper, and a workhorse... Also, worth considering.

The price, the formfactor, the specs, man this camera really ticks all the boxes for me. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is - the age old saying once again showing its value. I'll probably still pick one up if I find a good deal seeing how those aftermarket fans can at least make the camera useable in sub-optimal conditions. Good video!
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 3 месяца назад
You are definitely right on that... The true weaknesses, for me, the ergonomics (but easily fixed with the grip), the mediocre screen (not fixable), and the overheating (but thankfully that's a fairly easy alteration). The fan pulls its weight, but ideally it would be nice if we didn't need one. That being said, it's really hard to beat the image quality, the dynamic range, and the dynamic stabilization!
@scb2scb2
@scb2scb2 9 месяцев назад
Nice video the issue is that its not really designed for the E1 so the cups are really a problem, not sure if you are also part of the facebook groups but i am almost finished with a 3d printed 'adapter' that you can put the ulanzi fan in and it then 'clicks' in like the lcd and how mty first $15 hack worked. Its a pity they didn't design it for sony really since the compromise now means its weak point is falling of. Ill make the 3d design available for download. Here is the old fan click to give you i idea ill soon post the adapter plate for the ulanzi fan and E1.
@BrianCatalano

I completely agree...and yes, I am part of the same Facebook group and chats with you, and your designs are precisely what is needed. The only drawback is that it's APSC but if you're shooting in 1080, that's not a problem, and the dynamic range is better on the zve1, but that's an unfair comparison.... And the fx30 still has decent dynamic range. It's a workhorse for wedding videographers, and it takes great photos too! It may be worth looking into, the fx30 and not the zve1...

Maybe I missed it - how long of battery life did you get on the fans internal battery?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 12 дней назад
Good question... The fan ran for me, at the highest setting of 2, for an hour and 14 minutes (this was in direct sunlight) and when the fan went out, so did the camera. I am sure if I set it to the first speed setting on the fan, the fan would have run much longer and if the ZV-E1 was indoors, the camera would have also ran longer. I was impressed with how well this thing worked.

Great product, great price! Super-DUMB attachment system! Did the folks at Ulanzi hear about magnets?! Which are now use to attaching not just competitor's less smart, but perfectly (magnetically) sticky, fans to cameras, as well as camera flash accessories, photo filters etc.? :) Hopefully Ulanzi will fix their mistake really soon. I personally have bought two of these and got rid of their crappy little suction cups, and upgraded to a DYI magnetic attachment solution.

Yes, agreed! There's a guy in the Facebook zve1 group who has designed a 3d print attachment that replaced the need of the suction cup... He works with Smallrig a lot, but he's giving out the design to be printed but I'm waiting for him to sell the piece!

Hello, I will be happy to answer your questions. The standard stabilizer can be activated at 4k 120 fps or FHD 240 FPS, but it also depends on the specific camera which stabilizer can be used. Focus tracking generally works well at 120 fps and 240 FPS, but this can vary depending on the camera. In low-light conditions, the quality may be similar to the FX3 and A7SIII, but this depends on the specific camera. It is important to compare the specific features and performance of the cameras to get an accurate assessment. I hope these answers have been helpful. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thank you.

Does the fan have a magnet inside or something that can damage your camera?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
Good question and I don't believe so but either way it attaches with rubber suctions stuck to an insulated sticker, so the fan doesn't even touch the camera per se, but I believe the fan is simply a battery operated motor with gears, so no magnets necessary.

Hello and sorry to hear that! Just to clarify, do you mean zve1 or zv1? Either way, the camera shouldn't do that and the only reason, other than a major malfunction which you would need to bring it into to get repaired, would be that you might be using the wrong memory card or a faulty one. What kind and speed of memory card are you using?
@Liam_blake00
@Liam_blake00 5 месяцев назад
Thank you for taking your time to reply mate :) Using a high speed SSD u3 or something but it was v expensive for what it was (the camera is for my partners RU-vid channel) Anyways I have changed the camera (yes its the zv1) onto a different tripod (one where the metal 1.5inch screw is the only thing attached to the camera) and means the camera is 1.5 inches floating above the tripod rather than screwed on the whole plastic block which was flush with the camera and blocked most of the bottom. I have just done a test and I managed 1 Hour hour in 4k/30 and I stopped recording manually, I have now moved to a warmer room to test again, so far im on 20 mins and still no temp warning issue. I think it's safe to say the heat was not being drawn away from the camera before. Fingers crossed I'll keep you updated!@@BrianCatalano

@BrianCatalano 6 месяцев назад
Ha ha... That's sort of brilliant! And I get your meaning... This is why for so long certain cameras had record limits (and maybe still should). However, my older Sony A7C could record forever whereas the newer one, not so much. I do think it's also now presumed that a camera has a fan in it, it's for "long-shooters"!

you didn't test 4k 24fps no-fan under shade
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 9 месяцев назад
Yes, you are correct! There were countless variables and controlled settings that I chose not to test for time and as I thought the presumption would be that by placing it in the most extreme environment (with and without a fan) that we could gauge how much better it would perform not in direct sunlight... But I definitely would love to revisit this, so maybe next time I test it, I will...so thank you! I also would be curious to know how it would compare in a studio with air conditioning. Yet, my guess is that both in shade and indoors at 4k 24fps with and without a fan, you'll probably get as long as you have battery life in either the fan or the camera!

14min 4k120 indoors EVEN WITH A FAN, its rather a fail on this cam... then you have the single card slot issue
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 5 месяцев назад
I can understand how many including yourself may feel disappointed in all that... My only perspective is relative and two-fold; I am thankful that I have the FX3, so if I need 4k 120, I've got options... That being said, I almost never shoot longer than 5 minute clips of 4k 120 (which is 25minutes of slow mo) and I've never have a memory card fail, and the other factor is for the price, the zve1 may be the cheapest full frame camera that gives you those high frame rates. Yet, again...I get that it's super annoying and that you might have to get this $40 fan, but for me and how I use the cam, I find this device a budget, bonus to an already great valued camera....that may be just me though. I'm curious, what camera are you thinking of picking up instead?

@@BrianCatalano the issue is not shooting clips longer than 5min. when the camera is ON , the overheating starts, regardless if you record or not. if the camera overheats in 5min outdoors of recording 4k120, it will also overheat in 5min of STANDBY while 4k120 is set.

Ulanzi is total crap that doesn't work. Peltier plate type coolers is what "really" works. When I stress tested (4k 60) Ulanzi cooler in direct sunlight it lasted just 15-18minutes but Tilta fan under same conditions was unlimited/until battery died.
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano Месяц назад
I can understand that summary from those results, and I agree that the Tilta fan is better (taking your word for it as I haven't tested it myself). Yet, my only addendum to that is... It's two very different products and two very different price points, so there's use-case advantages for both. I paid $20 for the fan that has tripled my shooting time in most scenarios. Yet, for me personally, I'm never shooting for 20min at 4k 60fps or 10min at 4k 120. Thankfully, I have the FX3 for those scenarios... And if I didn't have that, and needed longer intervals, I probably would pick up the fx30 over the zve1. That all being said, if you already own a camera that overheats and you really need to push it, you're right, go with the Tilta. If you just want a cheap, fast, and portable fix, I still recommend the ulanzi. Regardless, thanks for sharing your results!!

Too many variables! So you shot outside with fluctuating heat, wind, and cloud cover. Sigh. Why not just perform the tests in a light/temp controlled environment, like in your house?
@BrianCatalano
@BrianCatalano 7 месяцев назад
That's a fair concern and with even true scientific studies, ruling out confounding variables is maybe the most difficult design element to account for... So that's why I wanted to be up front with the minimal temperature fluctuations of a degree or so and mention the slight (and momentary) passing of cloud coverage. However, it was a real world application to how one may shoot if in fact they are outside without a shade structure. This seemed like the most stressful setting and most worthy of testing as I have not experienced overheating indoors-- except with high frame rates. This is why I also ran the indoors tests at the tail end of the video for those HFRs... I'm not sure if you watched that portion, but again, at 4k 24fps indoors, a fan is in my experience, unnecessary. But you are right, there are too many variables, and I had to focus on the few that seemed to make the most sense for testing out this $20 fan. I welcome others to help and add to these findings with their own test as some have with very similar results. Thanks for the critique as it is a good question!
@Standard.Candle
@Standard.Candle 7 месяцев назад
@@BrianCatalano I feel you fam. Shooting outdoors is the stress test that most people will care about, as they're probably overheating the most. I'm just looking at this camera to be a streaming webcam indoors, very climate-controlled, either through USB or HDMI+camlink. I am still VERY concerned about how many people are saying it shuts off after 45 minutes, just pushing video out through the HDMI. That seems insane to me, and makes this whole product segment a non-starter for multi-hour streaming. My current plan is just to get one and use thermal tape to attach a 50mm x 50mm copper heatsink on the back of the camera, and hang a super quiet Noctua fan from the wall behind it to give it constant airflow. If that can't get it stable, then I'm going back to my A5100 and giving up.

@BrianCatalano 7 месяцев назад
@@Standard.Candle I completely get that concern... And since I don't stream, I didn't even consider testing in that way.
