I'm a retired former Swedish Merchant Mariner. Your videos fill in the gaps where we never got the opportunity to go ashore exploring the ports we visited. Am looking forward to when you cast off the lines and head south and hopefully East with RAN 2. Hope you'll make it all the way to China where I live. Would be nice to welcome you as I did the East Indiaman Götheborg when she arrived Kanton or Guangzhou as it is now named.Your Saturday videos now are the highlights of the week. Keep up the very good job you do on the videos and the boats.
Recycling idea for an impromptu weight belt: Cut two slots into a bunch of 0.5 to 1-liter soda bottles (uniform size). Thread all the empty bottles onto a leather or canvas belt that fits through the slots. Fill the bottles with pebbles, rocks and as much sand as they will hold. Cap the bottles, wear the belt, and then unwrap the fouled propeller. Let the bottles drain out when finished.
Every sailboat and power boat I have owned since the 1970's has had a line cutter on the prop shaft just for theses types of situations. It works with even some stainless cables and it beats diving to clear the prop. They are not expensive and after just one time not having to dive they pay for themselves. Vera is a wonderful little actress and she brings a new dimension to your channel.. Blessing for health and safe travel!
Wet suit 👍❗️ Went camping and boating on a remote lake in Pennsylvania with wife and her little sister in July of 1969. Rain tried to ruin the fun. We bought 2 wet suits, one for the girls and one for Al and water skied for 2 weeks in great comfort, despite the cold of the upper Alleghany River in Kinzua Reservoir. Great investment. You will not regret getting one. Yours will be much better than what there was in the 60's.
You have to be very cautious using these devices. Most diving accidents take place between 0 and 10 meters depth. In this range the compression of air in the lugns are doubled. If you ascend too quickly without breathing och letting the air out from your lugns these might over-expand and rupture unless the diver allows the gas to escape by maintaining an open airway, as in normal breathing. The lungs do not sense pain when over-expanded giving the diver little warning to prevent the injury. Using a portable breather should only be used by a certified SCUBA diver.
It's becoming the Vera sailing RANII show, she is so cute when you see the facial expressions and she looks like she is totally involved in what's going on, helping Daddy whenever she can. Another nice video of the area, thanks for sharing. Fair winds and safe travels.
Your tour around Sweden has been great. I new little about Sweden and really enjoyed learning about about the geography. Visiting there must go on my bucket list.
You are my number one sailing video to watch. Never miss a posting. I can’t believe you don’t have a million subscribers. We live in the San Francisco Bay area and wish we could have met you when you came here on Ran I. Keep safe and show us more sailing scenes …less boat service ( who dreams about boat projects-we dream about freedom from work in exotic locales 😁) keep sharing that life we envy. You’re the best.
I just love watching you guys, your so down to earth, a lovely beautiful energy, your vibration is gentle. Have a wonder visit with your family and friends 💖
I envy your cool summer temperatures. We were 110 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday, but cooler today at 104! We are stuck in the heat dome here in northern California.
Vera is stealing the show guys !! Great compressor for the boat !! can’t wait to see the adventure continue.I’m going to miss Sweden 🇸🇪! thank you for the awesome tour of your beautiful home!! fair winds and calm seas ⛵️
One night, in the dark, pulling into a free dock for the night, I forgot to shorten my dinghy painter. Trying to turn the boat around, I managed to suck the painter into the prop. Steering was useless with propulsion. Fortunately, the other folks on the dock saw I needed help and sprung into action. Now, the dinghy gets deflated, rolled up and goes down below in the cabin. Lucky for me, the swift current and changing of the tide made the painter loosen up. After cutting it from the dinghy, it pulled out with little effort.
Re other comments. A prop cutter is a possible answer but brings other problems. It is surprisingly easy to foul another boat's stern anchor tape in a crowded harbour, particularly in a crosswind.
What a beautiful part of the world. Such a beautiful family you have. I myself have a Danish wife, two awesome Canadian daughters and I hail from Nfld....love sailing and the ocean, thanks so much for sharing your life with all of us. Peace out. Speed Safely..
If you are concerned about diving in cold water, I suggest you consider a dry suit instead of wet suit… works much better in cold water allowing you to work longer and does affect your buoyancy as much as neoprene wet suit.
Aother great video. Vera is very lucky and very cute. Sweden is so lovely this time of year, but I can certainly understand why you want to go south come autumn. Look forward to more of your adventures.
Thank you I needed a smile this afternoon. There is a growing group of new boat kids they should have their own facebook page. 7 girls (1on the way) and 2 boys (1 is on the way). Vera can handle those ropes, she will make a great crew member!
I think that through again about leaving your home country to cruise at the end of summer. Mid to late autumn Corona is going to get crazy again and the lock downs are going to ramp up again.
Happened to me and the water temp was 10C. But I was lucky. Reversed the prop very slowly and the rope backed itself off. Very lucky. No, very, very lucky.
I found the soft reservoir interesting. Commercial diver and cleaned thousands of boats I've actually used a oilless "pancake " compressor like the kind used for air tools but you need to have a very fine air filter and the compressor has to be oil-less. Sea Breeze looks like a nice little unit and its 12 volt which is a big plus as apposed to 110 with an inverter
Using a hooka (compessor with hose) for diving is fun. The hose length limits your depth, preventing the need for gradual decompression as you surface. A good training practice - have someone shut off the system while you are down, learn to experience that and avoid potential panic in the future if or when it happens. More fun! And thanks for all the great videos.
I also use a Sea Breeze Hooka on our boat. Good system. It's my understanding that the Sea Breeze regulator is designed to operate at a lower pressure than Scuba regulator. A Scuba regulator will work with Sea Breeze Hooka, you just have to suck a little harder for each breath intake. Thanks again for your video diaries ..!
Love the area you're sailing.. at first I thought it looked barren at bit but now I think it is quite beautiful.. I think your family is wonderful all. That breather with 10 meter range seems more than enough to do repairs, maintenance and have some fun exploring maybe more straight down in shallow waters than around about. I'd try meditation while sitting on the bottom or just floating free .. how lovely and you might not need the wet or dry suit in the more southern waters you are heading towards. EnJoy!!!
There are some lovely moments while Malin is kneeling and comforting Vera, with a backdrop of rusted bins and a clown in the corner. A couple of good still photos there, particularly 8:52. I got that hint of your European plans - I am psyched!
I'm so excited for you that your going South. I'm a New Zealander watching you from afar and loved seeing your country with you. Fair winds & I hope to see you here 1 day.
I believe you both are wonderful parents. I think it shows in Vera’s happy disposition. I know you don’t need me to tell you that, but I wanted to say it.
I was helming a yacht through the Islands north of Dubrovnic I was nominated skipper for that day (I was with a flotilla sailing company) I saw the Grey sheet on the horizon so I awoke my sun-baked fellow crew but by the time they had roused themselves realised I wasn't joking and had gone below out of the threat of a soaking The weather-front had hit us (I was at the helm remember) I remember thinking the most expensive power shower couldn't give your body this amount of pummeling When all of a sudden came a FLASH my body's self-preservation kicked in I released my grip on the wheel thinking to myself YOU HAVE Survived again when realisation dawned to look down at my fellow crew one of whom had a camera It was the cameras flash that had caused my near fatal heart beats But I made sure their ears heard that which I was intending
I had just fouled my prop on my dinghy panter line a couple weeks back. I was at the bow letting out some more chain. I was at idle in reverse and my dinghy hung up under my wind vane. I have a hookah dive system but I also a waterproof endoscope. It saved me jump in the cold water just to see what I was dealing with first.
Enjoyed the episode. I know I’ve said it before but Vera sure is a ☺️ cutie. Gets it from her good looking parents. :-) Thanks for sharing. Life is good~
I completely agree about buying a wet-suit. I bought one years ago for just this purpose but never used it. However it is cheapish to buy and easy to store. Before that I had to go overboard in very cold water and used an unlined set of oilskins, together with socks on hands and feet. This was a considerable help and copiud from another occasion when we fouled on fishing gear in the English channel. We freed ourselves from the ground easily enough but needed someone underwater to take off the remaining rope. The usual cutting tool is the breadknife but a ceiling board saw is considerably better. It has wickedly sharp teeth and from Screwfix in the UK costs £6. Incidentally these "lazyline" moorings are a pest and in one harbour on the East coast of Sweden, where they installed the system, the lines rapidly got mangled. They do increase the number of available moorings. If fitted the lines should have weights to keep them close to the bottom.
I love your channel. You two are adorable but Vera steals the show. I really love, love, love your music choices. I’ve watched many channels with good content, but the music is all wrong!! You three take care, and thanks for the ride. 💞🦋
