Sophia Loren is VERY classy. Whenever she is asked to autograph that famous photo, she refuses out of respect for Jayne and her passing. Now THAT is class!
I have always loved Sophia. Even as a child, I thought she was so beautiful. And because she’s Italian as I am made me proud. Back in the 1980’s she was in Michigan where I live, for a book signing and when it was my turn to meet her I spoke to her in Italian. My Dad coached me to say Hello your so beautiful and a few more words. Her eyes lit up and started to talk to me in Italian so I had to confess to her I only knew how to say a few words in her honor. She laughed and put me right at ease. I left her and walked back to my friends and was mesmerized and even cried a few tears of happiness. And she was just as beautiful as you see her on the screen. I will never forget that day. One of the highlights of my life ✝️
Sophia was the big new star then, and Jayne wore that dress on purpose to steal the limelight from her. When asked about it later, Sophia just said, "I felt sorry for her". Now that's an elegant lady.
Right? This was 1957 so Jayne's career was just about to peak, so I don't know why she'd feel threatened at this time. Talk about insecure. And it only got worse after that.
I just studied Hayne Mansfield a bit .. what a Tragic ending to such an interesting life.. She never made it big in the Movies , but she was smart and good at Promoting herself.. Vegas shows Dinner shows.. and Theatre.. paid her Bills Three Marriages five Children and snuffed out at age 34 in a Tragic car accident..
She had three pretty well performing movies and lots of other roles here and there. But she wasn't good at promoting herself. If you're trying to sell expensive, classy perfume, you don't go selling it at Walmart. You'd sell it at a higher end store. That's what Jayne did. Wanted to be seen as classy and as a star, but kept cheapening herself with silly stunts that are akin to TikTok videos today.
I read in marilyn mason's autobiography that Anton Lavey (founder of the church of satan) took credit for her death because he put a hex on her a few days before the accident 🙃
No copy cats the most beautiful woman in the world and still is a representative of all woman good harvest and grace to an iconic itolialia movie star!
Explaining "Here in America..." like if it was the first time Loren was in the US. She has been and worked in the US decades before the interviewer was even born.
Um it's an African, black girl thing, even the term "side eye" is a black American urban term. It's usually followed by this utterance with much attitude, like I did when I read your comment, "Uhmn!" 😂😂
@@lf1496 I really doubt it's a "black girl thing" after reading this article www.dictionary.com/e/slang/side-eye/#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20earliest%20known,giving%20someone%20the%20side%20eye. And from Merriam Webster dictionary, which also doesn't mention it being a "black girl thing": "Newly ubiquitous though the word may be, it's not a new term at all. James Joyce used it in Ulysses, published in 1922: 'A side eye at my Hamlet hat. If I were suddenly naked here as I sit? I am not. Across the sands of all the world, followed by the sun's flaming sword, to the west, trekking to evening lands.' But he was by no means the first. Our earliest evidence of side-eye in use is from 1797: 'Here we come to what calls for the strongest eye-sight, the most steadfast gazing. Our being in Adam has been looked on with a side eye. The subject has provoked dislike; I may almost say, contempt. It is now painful to speak of it.' - Remembrancer For Lord's Day Evenings, 19 Mar. 1797" www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/words-were-watching-side-eye
@@lf1496 You full of shit anybody can give a wide-eyed, why everything got to be black, no way trying to take credit for everything that's out there, uhmm humm right back at cha "GIRL"
Why people are so cruel and petty is discouraging .. Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield were STARS (and Beauties)of the Magnitude rarely equalled today. Anything is called a Star or Celebrity necaise its on a phone Not much talent or actual integrity involved just Instagram or a TicTox. The Studio System wasnt always kind but you put in the time to be trained. You Sang Danced Acted for hrs daily. Wardrobe Combat Staging ..Gymnastics fencing. Those people worked.. A select few people today train. Its important to get the real facts. There is always someone for everyones taste !!!
I'm British. America should be proud of Jayne Mansfield. This woman was gorgeous, glamorous and sexy. Yes, Jayne was a showoff. That's the nature of the profession she was in. People who are showoffs are entertaining, that's true of women and men. Muhammed Ali and Jayne Mansfield are superb examples. When Jayne competed with Sophia it resembled Ali vs Liston. Jayne won this confrontation hands down, or perhaps it should be "Breasts Down!" This was a wonderful moment for the photographers and for all red-blooded males. Come on Americans, support your gal. Jayne was The Greatest.
Im sure Mariska Hargitay wouldn’t appreciate this. Jayne had a very tragic ending, I feel like these comments and interviews tarnish her image. She was someone coming up in Hollywood and she was not subtle about her ambitions. Atleast she wasn’t a fake snake like most actors
Juan Mendez, It just wasn't a great thing to do to Sophia since it was a party welcoming Sophia to Hollywood. Jayne always felt that she had to do those kind of things to steal the attention but she should have been more respectful to Sophia. Jayne actually hurt her own credibility and likability with overdoing these sort of publicity stunts. She was kind of put in an impossible situation though, being hired by Fox to be a larger than life sexpot to threaten the studio's star Marilyn Monroe. So she did all these things that MM would never have done. It is sad because Jayne could have had a better career if she hadn't been trapped into the image.
Does she understand the meaning of 'iconic?' Merriam-Webster's says, iconic: "widely known and acknowledged especially for distinctive excellence." These days, though, some may see excellence there, for this is the kind of world we live in, for now ...
They both were celebrated for , for lack of a better choice if words What they bought to the table!! Seeing them both in close proximity of each other was and is Offsetting because they both had FLESH IMPACT .the make you look 2 and 3 times to see if That much Womanliness wouldnt cause a BlackOut ..Mr Romanoff the host looked dazed. Certain People have that affect on.Mortals. Dandridge.Bardot Monroe in their time...Jlo Beyonce Naomi Salma in ours. Jack Anthony. said its like Comparing Apples to Oranges ...And then some!!!🔥🔥💥💥
Oh, so it wasn't jealously or contempt on her face, as most people who see that image assume... it was serious concern, like watching someone handle explosives, lmao.
Lol imagine if Jayne Mansfield hadn’t died from that car accident and she was still alive today in 2024 and they both did this side eye photo again for memories sake lol that would be funny
Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch . . . the most beautiful women. I'm so gay I hug women the way uptight straight men hug other men, with their butts two feet behind their torso, and their torso so far back their collar bones barely touch; but I could totally be straight for Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch.
In this interview Sophia Loren is neither classy or witty. Jayne Mansfield was no longer with us at the time of this interview and couldn't defend herself, tragically Jayne had died in a car accident. Sophia and Jayne met when 20th Century-Fox movie stars greeted Sophia at Romanoff's Restaurant in L. A. Gary Cooper, George Raft, Clifton Webb and Jayne were some of these movie celebrities who welcomed Sophia for her first Hollywood film, 'Boy On A Dolphin.' Jayne wore a low cut dress. As we all know, Jayne was beautifully proportioned, particularly with regard to her magnificent bust. This was the first time where Sophia found herself "Out Busted." Those were the words used by the press when describing this USA vs Italy confrontation. Sophia was heard to mutter: "I would never wear a dress like that!" Jayne heard the crack and gave a potent reply: "You couldn't wear my dress because you don't have the breasts to hold it up. If you wore this dress it would fall down around your ankles." The truth is, Sophia did wear low cut dresses, as did Jayne. It was necessary in the profession they were in. I'm not American, I'm British. But, in my opinion, America should be proud that this nation produced Jayne Mansfield. She was gorgeous, glamorous and sexy. Jayne was also a wonderful mother to five children. Many children of Movie Stars frequently embarrassed their parents when they became adults. That isn't the case with Jayne's children. Jayne, despite her busy workload, loved being a mother and always had time for her kids.
@@draganpaunovic5596 that's not what I said dear. Jayne was the bigger star at that time. That year Jayne held the record for the most magazine covers worldwide! Even in Italy. You're welcome 😀
@@Kaboomboo You're another one who can't read... Jayne certainly was more famous than Loren when that photo was taken. Why would they have to have a party to introduce Loren to Hollywood if she was known already? Everyone all over America and the rest of the world knew Jayne well. Hence Jayne WAS more famous at that moment. You're welcome 💖
😂@@PopCultureCarnivore1😂😂😂😂no Sophia is relevant because she was a brillant actress and a very beautiful Italian woman ❤with style & class & elegane ❤. Mansfield was a sinking Ship later on in her carrier 😂😂😂she always was reduse on her her big boobs and fake blond hair😢. She was addictet to Alkohol and drugs and had multiple affairs with differnt men's in her short life😂. Sophia never used drugs or drank to much ❤. That's what real class is all about ❤. And that's why the side eye happend ❤
I think if Jayne had been looking at Sophia's hairy armpits, which she did have in that era of her life and career, she would have had pretty much the same look on her face that Sophia has on hers, lol!
No hypocrisy. It's one thing to play a character in a film and be topless as that character, and quite another to be an exhibitionist and allow your boobs and nipples to hang out as yourself at a party. That said, I think Ms Mansfield was looking to further her career at a time when being a sexpot may get a woman ahead faster. She didn't need to do it though, she had natural beauty, was smart, and had enough talent to be a pretty good actress.
Why is she being holier than thou? I’d be the same if some woman came to my party and was about to drop out of her dress at any moment over the dinner table - it’s nothing to do with being holier - just a bit of decency.
Yeah right. Sophia was a serious actress and that happened to appear nude. She was still a professional. Jayne crashed Sophia's press party. It was supposed to be for Sophia, not Jayne. But she showed up anyway, and last so everyone would put the focus on her. She wore more revealing outfit so she could steal all the photos. Sophia was being very mature and classy here but let's be honest, she was probably incredibly pissed at Jayne's audacity trying to cheaply steal her thunder. And it didn't help Jayne's career either because people either saw her as a cheap floozy or a desperate hack shortly after this time.
