Hi we have a circular 1930s stained glass pannel that is wobbly. Is it possible to just recement this or would all the old cement need to be removed? None of the glass is broken.Do you have a bideo on this? Thanks

People try this but it's not very successful. Might be better to consider secondary glazing.

@@SophiesStainedGlass thanks for your reply Sophie. I will give it a go if it doesn't work I can consider secondary glazing. Can I just ask is it a retain solder you use? Any links would be appreciated 🙏 cheers

Hi Sophie - what soldering iron would you recommend, like the kink on that one you use within the video, thank you

Ignore the kink - I changed the tip and ordered the wrong one ! It works fine but I'd buy a straight one next time. It's a Weller 100

Is there a set amount of time you should leave the whiting on for before cleaning? Do you need to wash the flux off after finishing? Do you ever patina your solder joints? Or lead? Do you use, or need to use a finishing wax on the lead? Sorry for the endless questions! Thanks, Camilla

Some people leave the whiting on for up to a day. I usually scrub it off after an hour. If you do it too quickly, the cement will still be giving out a bit of liquid which you will have to clean off as it emerges - so nothing really awful happens if you don't have time to leave it. It is good practice to remove the flux but I find the scrubbing during cementing and polishing takes most of it off. I stopped using patina when I got my polisher as I don't seem to need it to get a nice bloom now. I've never used wax.

is that a specialised round-the-corner soldering iron, or did someone sit on it?

😆 some people prefer angled tips...I just ordered the wrong one!

Can you provide details on the buffer/polisher you use? Thank you!

I've bought a couple over the years. Both were vintage hoover floor buffers with coir brushes. Both ridiculously cheap from eBay.

I'm sorry, but that is some of the worst solder welds I have ever seen. I know it is a challenge to solder new lead/zinc to old, and solder is expensive, but your lumpy, minimal welds are ugly and weak. And it seems the new lead is misaligned to the existing. You might have cut the replacement pieces too long. I did appreciate the use of internal steel to strengthen the panel.
