Here's an update on our Sopwith Pup restoration, we've been prepping for a possible trip to Oshkosh. It's been a while since the last update clip, so we wanted to give a short overview of what's transpired over the last 15 months, before concluding the clip by showing you the first start up attempts. After a few first hiccups we . . . well, check it out and see for yourself.
Hope you enjoy . . . and as always, we love to hear your comments.

For those who are interested, this aircraft is painted as the Pup flown by the Canadian ace Joseph Fall when he was serving with the Royal Naval Air Service. The 'Betty' and 'Phyllis' painted on the sides of the aircraft were the names of his sisters. He ended the war as the only pilot awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with 2 bars for 'gallantry in the air'.

Capitano Americo search WW I rotary engine. There were several kinds and youtube has several videos on the subject. Valve cams/timing and ignition timing can get interesting. "Carburetor" is non-rotating hollow crankshaft, not unusual is always full throttle with speed control by interrupting the ignition spark. Interesting item to note on this link is exhaust will always be in same area of rotation and alternates from next cylinder undergoing compression ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sY07FI91F9M.html

Capitano Americo I have been a mechanic for 35 years. I can make eny engine run. Let's just take a moment . Think about those eighteen or ninteen year old kids. Out there in a war. Hungry cold and tired. Trying to get those old engines to run. The pilots the mechanics. One hundred years ago. Those poor basterds that had to fight those machines to life. Mkes me weep for them.

Kermy, great video! We used to start our LeRohne 80 at full throttle after priming all nine cylinders. No need to worry about oil pressure, with the total loss oil system there isn't any. Oh, and don't forget to turn on the castor oil (what a mess!). We always had a big crowd on hand at the Pearson Air Museum to see it run. The airplane was a replica Nieuport 24bis project stared by Johnny Hart in Vancover, WA, USA, and finished and flown by Ron Oches in Madras, OR. The airplane is currently on display at the Seattle Museum of Flight, Boing Field. Very seriously tho, I felt less than totally comfortable in the roomy cockpit with all of the ingredients for a fire right there in my lap... the leaky carburetor and the fuel and oil tanks, AND the single magneto! The first item on the check list was to have your head examined!

I see the Sikorsky S-39 in the background. I remember when Dick Jackson owed it when it was at Rochester N.H.. I worked at 7B3 North Hampton N.H.for Darian Banfield until he died flying a Bamboo Bomber off floats (Sky Kings) type plane back to 7B3 , North Hampton N.H. Peter Jackson ,the guy who directed Lord Of the Rings in New Zealand had us do a DR3 ( There are no Real ones flying ) as far as I know there all repicares , Albatros D-VA and a SE5A (rep) rebuilt and shipped to him in New Zealand. Then I worked for Craig Sinclair for a few years. Did the fabric Paint and rigging on 3 DR3's and every type of tail wheel and strut. type plane. If it wasn't a tail wheel plane, I didn't touch it. I owed an Aronca 1941 65CA .And built 2 new wings for it ,tube welding on the tail .Rebuilt the whole plane. I believe she flew better than any cub. Lots of respect for what you do. During the Fokker Scourge the average life expectancy for a RAF pilot was twenty minutes flying time. Which I expect is about nineteen more minutes than the pilot of this particular aircraft could hope to survive if Betty ever found out about Phyllis...

The engine is a work of art... the primary reason for all the effort is the carburetors.. the Brits have interesting ideas about fuel delivery, assuming that magnetos are adjusted correctly... a spark advance might help

Take acetone through a water filter like a diesel engine and mix hempseed oil to provide top end lubrication... in a spray bottle.. right in the throat of the carburetor

At some point you or have one of your staff talk about how those rotary engine work, everyone seems to cover the mechanical parts. More interested in the carburetor and intake, wiring to the plugs and points, oiling system etc. as a rotating mass just would like to see how it is done. I'm sure they are not as sophisticated as something I work on with rotating slip rings and mercury to connect electrical and signals etc.

The next update may show what happened shortly thereafter.. The cowl blew off in flight when Kermit was near final, split the prop, numerous rips on the fabric, destroyed the upper wing leading edge. Some damage to the engine pushrods, etc. The remainder of the cowl was wrapped around the upper wing. Barely made it back to a safe landing. Back to the shop. Great piloting skills the bring it in.
