Sore, Hurt, or Injured? Here’s How to Tell (and Why It Matters)
Hey Powerbuilders, it’s Coach Gary! We’ve all been there-you wake up the morning after a killer workout, and something’s off.
But is it just soreness, are you hurt, or did you actually get injured?
Knowing the difference is the secret to keeping your gains rolling and avoiding serious setbacks.
Let’s break it down in a way that’ll save your workouts-and your body:
Sore
• What it is: That good ol’ DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)-the burn of muscles rebuilding stronger after a tough session. It usually hits 24-48 hours post-workout.
• How it feels: You’re achy, stiff, and might feel like a zombie, but you can still power through the day.
• What to do: Light stretching, active recovery, and staying hydrated. Enjoy the process-it means you’re growing!
Hurt
• What it is: You overdid it or maybe had a slip in form. It’s not a full-blown injury, but something feels a little off.
• How it feels: It’s more than soreness, but not excruciating. You can still move, but you’re walking a fine line.
• What to do: Back off a bit, use ice, compression, and rest until you feel back to normal. Listen to your body before it turns into something worse.
Injured
• What it is: The big red flag. Whether it’s from overuse or a sudden trauma, an injury is serious and needs attention.
• How it feels: Sharp, persistent pain. It makes certain movements hard, if not impossible, and could be accompanied by swelling or visible changes.
• What to do: Stop immediately! Get medical advice if it’s bad. Focus on rest, rehab, and recovery so you don’t make it worse.
The Bottom Line
Knowing the difference between soreness, being hurt, and being injured helps you train smart and keep making gains without putting yourself at risk.
