Kino not being able to swim mirrors Luthen's "I burn my life for a sunrise I'll never see". Kino KNEW the entire time he couldn't swim, yet he chose to help free as many of those imprisoned as he could, because those people and their freedom meant more to him than his life.

Every line in this show had a mirror line or concept. It is insane. Some is from the show, some is from rogue one, and some is from the rest of Star Wars

Everything in this show mirrors something else. E V E R Y T H I N G ! ! ! Even the way Luther sends presses the clicker to send lonnis away (to his, likely/spiritual death) mirroring the way he presses the clicker to (to kill the corpos). Watch the show 50 times, and you will keep finding new parallels. It is insanely good. Best tv season ever made. Tony gilroy is a GENIUS.

The one that escaped with Cassian is actually Melshi. He’s a Rebel Leader in rogue one. You see him in the movie rescuing Jyn at the beginning and the one who’s tasked on finding the master switch on Scariff.

The best evidence for Kino knowing that he was going to die no matter what, as pointed out in ladyknightthebrave's essay on Andor, is that he himself didn't get onto a table when they were about to spark the floor.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. In fact he stands right in the middle of the square where they shock the group that gets punished. There is a theme of personal sacrifice that is showing up through all these episodes. Kino, Luthen, Lonni, what Mon Mothma is confronted with, what Marva is about to do ... all sacrifices for the cause.
@OptionZero
@OptionZero 2 месяца назад
Somehow Mon Mothma’s performance was only the third best in the episode. Sticking Kino and Luthen’s monologues in the same episode is an absolute flex. This might be the best episode of Star Wars ever We really see Cassian realizing his value - he couldn’t deliver the speech bc the inmates wouldn’t respond. It had to be Kino, so Cassian pushed him to do it, just like he would with Jyn in Rogue One
@LarsG08
@LarsG08 2 месяца назад
I very much saw Cassian channeling his future intelligence operative role. Identified the objective (getting out of prison) figured out who he needed to make it happen (Kino) and then worked him until he got what he needed. It's obviously less overtly Machiavellian then that, but it's pretty much picture perfect demonstration on why Andor ends up being so good at what he does.
@lady8jane
@lady8jane 2 месяца назад
I think during the whole show we see him basically doing what he will later do as spy/operator for the Rebellion. He's incredibly perceptive and knows how to organise and make connections, a great improvisor and good at using the tools at hand.
@inspectorwhoreacts
@inspectorwhoreacts 2 месяца назад
"I've made my mind a sunless space" Is such a raw line, it really says how far he's isolated himself from everything that would give him joy that doesn't involve conflict. His one and only purpose is making the rebellion happen, but even has to play his own side, have them make sacrifices they may be unaware of. Slowly tho he is starting to crack now that it's no longer a subtle battle but is becoming a full scale war. He's no hero... But he made Heroes happen.

This came out the same year as the final season of Succession and the Bear. IMO, the Bear is a better show than Andor, but not by much - I think Andor is certainly a more communicative piece in terms of visuals and sound design, but that might just be my affinity for the kind of grand tragedy that I see in Andor. And while I love Succession, it has to be said that it's mainly carried by compelling acting and not much else - and I'm personally not a fan of how much the visual aspect of TV gets taken for granted these days.

The ending scene, with the cut from Luthen saying “ I need all the heroes I can get” to Cassian and Melshi (who will fight and die together on the sands of Scariff in five years) running across the sands of Narkina 5 is just … wonderful. Prepare for emotional devastation with the next episode, and an incredible finale.
@skiena

"We took a vow" was also noted when Luthen is talking to Mon Mothma after the Aldani heist. Mothma is the money person, Lonnie is the inside man and Luthen is the man behind the curtain. Everyone in this show has "one way out." Luthen knows he's gonna die as a result of what he's doing and while Lonnie wants to escape but he can't -- his life is also forfeit. Keno knew he could not swim and was probably not going to get out alive. Marva could have left and gone with Cassian to Niamos, but stayed and is obviously sprial down healthwise -- one way out.

It's not "anti-star wars" it's filmmaking evolving the same way that special effects and cameras evolve. There's no reason you can't have fully realized characters and fantasy fulfillment. Beau Willimon, the writer for this episode, has signed on to co-write the Jedi origin movie and I can not be more excited.

Everything that went down between all of our stories are coming to fruition. Kino's monolog was awesome but then Luthen's monologue was off the charts. Then Mon Mothma's decsion to meet Davo's conditions... oof... Great that Cassian has become the sort of Luthen character and putting together a plan and inspiring someone else to be the "hero" in Kino Loy. A great spy is one that doesn't get noticed and he's on his way! I didn't see Lonny being an inside man, but that was chilling as well and Luthen's reasoning to sacrifice 50 men to work for the greater plan. OOOH SO GOOD! THIS IS THE STAR WARS THAT WE DESERVE. I think Luthen's speech kinda makes me think he's a hidden Jedi. He's turned his back on everything that he believed in and now he's just doing what it takes to beat the Empire and Emperor.

One thing I think you guys are missing about Mon's daughter is that she's fallen into a tradcath-like cult, an arranged marriage to a wealthy boy she's never met is exactly the kind of thing she'd be into right now. Early on in the show Mon talked about how her marriage with her husband was arranged and how they're both happy to get away from traditions like that, but their daughter is shown attending gatherings where they praise the 'old ways' and yearn to return to them.

We've been told that Andy Sirkis _will_ be in season 2, but being Andy Serkis, that could be as anyone or any _thing._ Kino knew they were surrounded by water; he knew he couldn't swim. He burned his life to make a sunrise he knew he'd never see. I liked the body language of Mon Mothma's scene. Mon and Tay were sitting tightly upright. Davo crossed his legs, lounged, spread himself expansively...because he was in control of the conversation and situation, and he knew it. Although it appears that Luthen is threatening Lonni's family, he's actually more directly threatening Lonni personally. The threat is that Lonni's daughter would grow up without a father, because Lonni is personally a threat not only to the rebellion but also to Luthen...it would be Lonni that Luthen must kill immediately. Luthen cannot kill Lonni's daughter and leave Lonni alive, but rather the opposite. Each of these arcs is really like a movie of a series. This series, which we know is limited, is an excellent use of the long-format story that streaming makes possible. This is done so very seldom, even though it ought to be obvious. Mon Mothma has plenty of money, she can spare the money...she's being forced to consider giving up her daughter. We know precisely that this story begins 5 years before the battle of Yavin; it said so in the first episode. At this point, nearly another year has passed. Who is this story is really about? It's been noted that Maava is also named "Andor," but I'd still say the story is about what is essentially Cassian's hero journey. I think that's part of what we see in Lonni...that there are many people who are "heroes" that would not be be represented as such in their own stories.

But we do have a Time Line for Andor - The first episode states that the date is 5 BBY. 15 Yrs means Luthen started taking action shortly after Palpatine declares the Republic is now the Empire. For 2nd Season it is reported that it will fill the remaining 5 yrs til Rogue One and then the Battle of Yavin by having the episode arcs skip years. And I can't wait.

my favorite episode of the series, so far. With my second favorite being the season finale. There's not a bad one in the bunch, but in a season of bangers, this is my tippy top S tier. Luthen's speech is one of the most amazing monologues I've ever heard. And being in the same ep as Kino's speech. These two sort of mirror images of selflessness, in a way. Kino, knowing he can't swim, broadcasting this speech across the whole prison to lead and inspire the escape, juxtaposed against this private confession of what Luthen is sacrificing for others that they will never know. It's so incredible. Excited to see your reaction to final 2. And so ready for season 2...

The key theme of this episode is sacrifice, and not in the sense of someone dying for the cause. To rise up against the evil authority and fascism of the Empire means to lose your own morals, decency, peace of mind, personal hope, and livelihood, and to do it quietly without reward. You must be so selfless that you can't be a good parent, you can't enrich yourself, you can't escape to the "wilderness" and recuse yourself, you can't protect yourself from stress, you can't live a life of ease. If you choose those kinds of love or greed or peace you obstruct yourself from the fight. The Empire, and any society good or bad, requires people just trying to live their life simply within the means that society has granted to them. Kino's the perfect example since his only self-interested option in his mind was serving his sentence. He valued adherence to the "program" and the rules not just because it was simple and safe but because he himself couldn't have escaped even if he tried. Escape was never an option for him, he can't swim. Yet it is his knowledge, gravitas, and position that were essential in making the riot happen. He then disappears into the crowd thanklessly with the people he saved clambering around him, unlikely to be saved himself. Love this show, and wish some of the other star wars media had that level of thought put into it.

On one hand, I also adore the show's focused minimalism, not showing the outcome of people like Kino once they are outside of the picture; but on the other, I suspect that him being alive along with the prison administrators might end up biting Cassian in the backside in the upcoming Season 2 when the connections reach its way up to Dedra, possibly even leading Cassian to develop the cold detachment that he has in Rogue One. And as for the concept of Andor being different from Star Wars' themes, I think this is a movement in the right direction. The grand movie might be the great fantasy of heroism, but these side stories can be more than that. In the EU, this was done in the books, and this was done to some extent in Canon too. Rogue One was a war movie, The Mandalorian started as a space western, and now Andor as a thriller. I can only hope they would continue to do this instead of falling into the status quo. Oh, and for timeframe, remember that this is 5 BBY as mentioned during Morlana One's title card at the very beginning. Luthen's 15 years ago could reference to 20 BBY, a year before the end of the Clone Wars. He could very much be a Separatist! (Which would be cool since the Empire's development is precisely what ideologically driven Seppies think Republic overreach would look like) Also, I'm quite glad that you mentioned that people generally are glad at Palpatine's declaration of the Empire. People nowadays just seem content that the moment the Empire name change happened, everything should went evil and not realize the gradual change that would come ("they are choking us so slowly we are beginning to not notice") or really, change that already occurred during the Clone Wars.

The prison riot and outbreak is, indeed, connected to the rebellion. Every where that people stand up against the Empire, small way or great way, is the rock of a rebel thrown at the Empire, a stress fracture in the framework of oppression, which is actually more brittle than it looks.

regarding the timeline, remember in episode 1 it said 5 bby, season 2 will cover the next 5 years per 3 episode arc i believe. so I'm assuming luthen has been discontent with the republic/empire since during the late stages of the clone wars, palpatine didn't just become emperor over night, as we see in clonewars, he slowly eroded and seized control of institutions, the courts, banks etc. the typical fascist playbook. Anyone paying attention knew what was going on, i really wish George kept those deleted scenes from ROS where padme and a group of senators confront palps about his growing unchecked power.

I disagree about Luthen: Of course he has morals, he's sacrificing his life to fight fascism. You don't do that if you have no morals and don't care. However, he has come to realize that he has to make some very difficult decisions and do some rather bad things if he is to stand a chance against the Empire. ("I'm doomed to use the tools of my enemy"). That's a calculation of ends justifying the means, not a psychopathic lack of morals.
@kirkdarling4120
@kirkdarling4120 2 месяца назад
Yes, an important point here is that Luthern still understands morality. He does not _justify_ his actions...he does not rationalize that his means are moral because the end is moral. He has not become "gray"...he still knows what good and evil are.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter. The vietcong cannot be called terrorists, even as the Indian freedom fighters (many of whom were arrested and hung for "acts of terrorism" in kangaroo courts), can't be called terrorists.
