SOS Bros React - Beastars Season 1 Episode 9 - Louis' Backstory!

Oguma didn’t want an adopted heir. He wanted a true biological heir. It is apparent as such since he tells Louis, “You will live as my blood son”. Since he was infertile, he had to fabricate a story by getting an inconspicuous child deer. But how to get one without being find out? The Dark Market was the best option to get one since the livestock there would be harder to track their origins. That’s why he doesn’t go to an ordinary orphanage, and why those in charge of the livestock market are surprised to see him. Oguma would normally never go there, but he does so because he is at his wit’s end to get his perfect heir.

Also, I hate the fact that the anime translation decides to make Legosi say "I'll take Haru for myself" when the actual translation is "Haru is mine"

Beastars Episode 1: SOS Bros - "Louis is the trash boy of this show" Beastars Episode 9: SOS Bros - "..."

AWOOOOOOOOO I interpreted the scene with Louis’ surrogate father tossing him to the carnivores as a further test to see Louis’ character. Louis saw that he had no chance at defeating all those carnivores and out of pride aimed the blade at his own neck. He was denied freedom for all his life and his final act of defiance was to deny them their hunt and choose the way he was going to die. I think that is why the father grabbed him back.

I just love the fact that Louis doesn't really want to shake the mayor's hand. At the end, it's only the mayor grabbing his hand, almost by force.

This is the only fansub that translates the name Shishigumi to Leo Group. But in all other subs as well as the official Netflix sub and dub the name of the group stays Shishigumi, just so you guys know for future episodes, that's the correct way to refer to the lion group.

It's actually the herbivores that are dominant in Beastars (at least legally) which is why carnivores have to obey so many rules and many join yakuza-like gangs. Basically, it's implied that the carnivores want to "lynch" Louie because he has an anti-carnivore reputation. Their afraid that Louie will become Beastar, crush the Back Markets, and relegate carnivores to second-class citizens even more than they already are. Also, I love how these randos that Haru slept with have a part to play in this.

Legoshi is best boy, but I love the many contradictions within Louis depths.

I just get so happy when Jacob freaks out like a little girl and Caleb is just amazed. This anime is really special to me and seeing how you enjoy it just make me wanna ....makes me wanna..AWOOOOOOOOOOOO

Leo Group = Shishigumi, which is the correct name that you will be hearing everywhere

The look on Louis' face at 15:05 is very clear: he couldn't even imagine that this side of Legoshi existed. Edit: Same thing for the look on his face at 15:36 : he finally understands our protagonist's feelings, and it is nowhere near what he expected.

One line that I wish had made it to the anime was after Louis accepts the deal he says “Mayor, even if you take away your fangs and change your face, you are still a lion like no other...”, implying despite his pacifying methods he still does it in his own predatory ways. Really adds to that instincts are hard to ignore. Also, AWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

What I love about this series is how it portrays deviancy. Haru, Legoshi, and Louis all go against what society says that they should be. Louis is a strong and commanding deer, Legoshi is a week and timid wolf, and Haru is a female that freely uses her body to gain agency in a society that treats her as disposable. There is clearly real world parallels, especially in Japan, but the bigger point is that this series is showing that it is expected and good that people can act in contrast to what society wants for them. This message is especially important in Japan where "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down".

I think the Louis's father thing is that he is a powerful/known businessman and needs to leave a successor but he can't. So he goes to the black market to buy a son so that he can show everyone that he's lineage won't end. And he does this in secret of the public view to not show a flaw (can't have kids) and because nobody really "exists" in the black market, so later it would be easier for him to just make up any excuse to the sudden appearance of a grown child. And I don't know how to howl in english so I'll just leave this * howl noises *

Some information worth knowing. the strength of carnivores in this series seem to be partially based on how dominant they are in their own ecosystems, rather than just their physical capacity. and in Japan the Japanese grey wolf was THE apex predator until it went extinct. I think that is why this series seems to treat Legoshi as on par with lions and tigers.

AWOOOOOOOOOOOO! Also, I love the fan theory that Louis isn't the first kid that Oguma tested the "stick them in a room or carnivores" thing with, mostly because the theory is sometimes know as the "Louis the fourteenth" theory and that's so hilariously dark you have to laugh.

Was hyped for this episode reaction the moment it was announced that SOS was reacting to Beastars.

Along with the fourth episode, this is one of my favorites of the series. It just subverts all your expectations for how the story will go and the conflict between Legosi and Louis and Haru’s kidnapping is set up so perfectly

AWOOO I'm a super new viewer here, but your reactions to this series have been amazing. I love that you guys spend so long discussing each episode. (I normally like to have it playing in the background lol). Been looking forward to this reaction for a while now

I wanted to say, that the match up between a lion and a wolf isn't too one sided. Don't forget that Lions and Wolves are pack hunters, and they hunt pretty similar prey in their respective habitats. I can't speak too certainly, but I imagine Lion vs wolf would be about 50/50. With that in mind, and look back to his interactions with his dog friends or Juno if you don't believe me, Legoshi is big for a wolf, not just compared to other animals. There's also the fact that he stood his ground against a Tiger, probably the most dangerous solitary hunter in the world. I bring this all up, because it shouldn't seem completely unrealistic for Legoshi to stand a chance, 1v1 against a Lion. With that in mind, as Lions are pack hunters, if Legoshi were to go against multiple Lions at once, it would be a pretty bad match up for him.

its kinda weird that society's aggression problems seems monodirectional, scared herbivores and dominant carnivores, since in that world, fire weapons do exists

he wasn't gonna devour Louis, just take him out, beat him up, there's no big 'devour louis' conspiracy

One thing to point out from a food chain stand point is that carnivores generally, due to being higher on the food chain have bigger concentrations of minerals in their body that can cause health issues, which is the main reason carnivores mainly eat hervibores, even when other carnivores may be easier prey.

holy shit an hour and 20 minutes, the wait was worth it.

I so wish that they kept the scene between Bill and Louis before the Adler play (I still really enjoyed the way they did Louis's backstory, but I felt like it kinda came out of nowhere) Including it would've added a bit more buildup, but I can understand why they took it out (possibly too mature). I just wonder if/how they're gonna include the [SPOILERS!!!] ' ' ' ' ' ' scene where Tao accidentally tears off Kibi's arm.

the thing about Louis isn't that he's SCARED of Carnivores, he's ENVIOUS of them. He saw the absolute heights of carnivore power ver herbivores and while he despises the cruelty and darkness of carnivores like that (hence his vitriol towards Bill afteer finding out about the blood) he still wishes he could be as strong as how carinvores have been ingrained into his psyche as being, and so he envies them.

AWOOOOOOOOO One possible interpretation for why Louis put the knife to his own neck is that on some level, he knew that he was important to Oguma. Putting the knife to his own throat was a threat to Oguma that he was about to lose his potential investment as much as anything else. Holding himself hostage. And I think Oguma was there for Louis specifically. If he wanted to pass him off as his biological son, he'd need a red deer, and I don't think any of the other children were the same species. The fact that he had a strong sense of justice was merely a plus. Throwing him to the carnivores with nothing but a knife was, similarly, a test of character. He wasn't going to abandon him or pick someone else based on his actions, it would simply have let him know what would need to be trained and worked on. Oguma seems like the very controlling, commanding type. Whatever Louis started off as, he'd shape him as he wished.
