I mean, the show made a point of mentioning how Voll has long exceeded the usual life expectancy for a dwarf, not to mention the multiple characters mentioning how he was senile. So I don't know how they missed that he actually was going senile.
Yeah, when people are starting to develop senile dementia or something similar and they're mostly still all there, it causes them a lot of anxiety when someone corrects them when they get things wrong or mixed-up. They realize their memory is going and it's scary. Frieren did him a kindness by playing along and letting it slide when she realized he was no longer only pretending to be senile.
10:46 I saw it as him getting dementia little by little, is not that he didn't heard about it, that's why Frieren gives that smile ans says "I'll also carry your memory", since he doesn't have much left...
It's a little sad that the two didn't realize that Voll had become senile. If it's already sad for someone to become senile, it only gets worse when we have a being with such a long life, imagine an elf going through that... In addition to all this, we still have Himmel looking perhaps at Frieren's possible future: alone and little by little forgetting even his existence.
The statue of ancient heroes depict a warrior and a priest. We know that the warrior is Kraft. But nowadays Kraft is a monk, not a warrior. So over the centuries since, he has taken on the profession of his once partner, perhaps honoring his memory that way.
@@Spesw Monks are certainly not priests, but they serve the Goddess as well. In this world, you have to be born with the right qualities to become a priest, so not everyone can become one. But if you want to serve the Goddess, there are ways to become one even if you don't have the right qualities, and one of those ways is to become a Monk (martial arts monk). I think that Kraft, who was originally a warrior, chose to become a monk when he lost his partner, a human priest, and people forgot about him.
I thought the same thing too. And while monks and priests are different classes, monks may very well be this story's world version of a holy warrior. It may be his way of hoping to be reunited with his deceased friend in the Goddess' realm too.
I'm genuinely shocked that you guys didn't realize that Voll thinks the Demon King is alive because he's going senile... Like, you catch onto minute details, but this was so plain that I'm shocked you didn't understand it! Mods, please, tell them.
I feel like after having that dream of Voll's wife, Voll is going to pass before Frieren sees him again. You can see the Dementia sinking in. He is OLD for a Dwarf, and doesn't have the same spark he used to have. o7
I love Sein but from a narrative standpoint he's got to go. For all that they trash him for being a corrupt priest who's even worse than Heiter just because he likes to smoke, drink, gamble and chase women, my dude is the only mature adult in that group of lovable dumbasses. If he doesn't go he'll have Fern and Stark happily married and Frieren fully grasping the human experience within a couple of years just by giving them solid common-sense advice.
Voll losing his memory because he's going senile is such an obvious realization for most viewers that it's shocking your interpretation of that scene veered completely down another path. It's not an illogical conclusion to draw, but it's definitely unusual. 😅
Seeing Voll's demented state was probably the first time Frieren got faced with the possibility that her memories aren't eternal and that she might also forget her friends in the future.
She seems to have excellent recall, but a more realistic setting would probably have that issue. You only have so many brain cells to remember things with. An immortal person, even if their mind is still sharp, would have their memories inevitably slip away.
@@patbracken theres also a chance frieren has excellent recall only because shes young relative to elves. to her, shes is probably the equivalent of ~20 year old humans - so 1000s of years isn't too hard to remember. but by the time shes old (relative to elves), shell probably have memories of himmel slipping away from her like voll
I don't thnk there is any reason to believe that elves in this world go senile. In fact, exactly the opposite - Kraft and Serie are both far older than Frieren and both seem absolutely fine. In fact, Serie's ability to apparently remember every grimoire she's ever read may indicate that elves have extraordinary memories and recall as part of what they are. This could be a real advantage to an immortal being, precisely because they live so long.
I think he initially feigned being senile, to keep that "wall" between himself and the villagers. Then when he started succumbing to it, I think he threw himself in. He would be fine fighting as drone, a slave of the promise he made till he faded into time.
Besides the obvious dementia 😛... Dreaming of dear ones long gone is a popular sigh that you will follow soon in some cultures. The author had her again a hidden messagenfor western audience. PS The dialogue between those two is one of the most subtle emotionally powerful I had seen in a long time, at least in Anime.. 😅
Caleb's idea of a D&D character having a set goal and then bouncing from the party and no one is broken up about it in order to attain the goal... Yeah, that happened in the group I DM for. Player had to come up with an entirely new character because yeah, no way was their character going to pass up the opportunity and also they hadn't really made friends with anyone else in the party.
At first I did think that it was because news didn't reach Voll yet, but considering how memories and being able to remember them was a common thing being brought up in the chapter, it'd make more sense thematically to conclude that Voll's developed dementia.
Yeah, making the highly physically/magically capable people in your setting do mundane tasks isn't so bad. Even if it's not the players themselves doing it, it'll help give any setting that more lived-in flavor since there's a place for these fantastical abilities to be used outside of SLAUGHTER or spycraft. Big warrior man came through town and moved some crates for people in exchange for room and a meal for the night (big warrior man is now in another castle, sorry, the journey continues on).
From the same creators of "Copy, not Steal", "Not Realizing Lily is Trans", "Boogie Woogie is His Cursed Energy" and "Believing Nana's Perspective About a Black Company", yet another amazing miss in "Not Realizing Voll is Going Senile". I'm not counting minor stuff like forgetting JJK characters from S1, that's reasonable. I guess that's the tradeoff for them understanding Utena very well. Perfectly balanced.
A question will they delay Frienren? Just like other shows like when Anime production take a week break they also take a week break. Or no break cuz they have to catch up
