Remember what Suzaku said in the four saint beast arc he questioned Yusuke's humanity and thought he was a demon. Even in a throw away line from rugby in the first round of the dark tournament too.
@@mirtaabreu7124 And during his fight with Toguro, his energy was alternating between red and blue. It's still too sudden tbh, and I would've loved for the team to avenge Sensui and have Yusuke come back some time after that (and for Kuwabara to deliver the last blow), but it's still pretty hype. And tbh, Yusuke's been able to effortlessly beat up groups of armed adults at 14, no spirit powers. That also can be chalked up as "foreshadowing".
The line delivering of Koenma's "Hold on, I'm coming with you" is something I could re-watch over and over again -- it's just such a wholesome and wonderful moment! I love Koenma tag-teaming along!
ironically Shirou's famous line perfectly fits here because it's basically the same conversation, Shirou was talking about how freakish and basically unfair it was that he has survived so many mortal injuries while others would simply die
For anyone saying Yusuke's demon blood is asspull, it's been hinted throughout the show. Ex. 1: Yusuke's mother has a dream about him beating ogres til he becomes their king Ex. 2. Dr. ichigaki wanting Yusuke's body because of his "potential" Ex. 3. Suzaku telling Yusuke he wasn't human Ex. 4. Rugby saying Yusuke stole their demon powers Ex. 5. The phoenix rising during Yusuke's power up. And there's still more I can think of
Kuwabaras friends tell him Yusuke is stronger than the devil. Genkai tells Yusuke he was blessed with “unusual” talent. And then there’s the fact that Yusuke has always been so strong had no explanation for the entire series until this moment… it’s because he has a genetic predisposition having Demon ancestry. Plus even more importantly, thematically it fits. We have a kid who everyone saw as a monster but became a hero despite his “bad apple” origin, just like Yusuke is a protector of life and earth even though he’s a feared and powerful demon.
I love that Koenma is staying in his older form throughout this last stretch of Chapter Black. I remember either Togashi or someone stating what the significance of that is? Something akin to keeping up a more mature tone for the arc? Also, hope they know that those fantastic dub-lines are courtesy of the FUNimation ADR team behind it & not Togashi himself lol
YOOOOO, this reaction was SO much fun!! I'm so glad you liked this episode and Yusuke's transformation, even despite the "bullcrap" powerup, but I personally am always so hyped to watch this part of the show! And all coming episodes are also such pure shounen fun, I think it's way underrated.
I'm so glad you guys agree with how much fun I think this episode is! I actually really liked the reveal especially bc it has been foreshadowed during the show and it was even done enough that I remember Caleb talking about that as a theory in some of the earlier episodes. The quote from the narrator at the end is one of my favs bc it's such a poetic way to end the arc "one is a human who fights to liberate demons and destroy his own kind, the other is part demon who fights on behalf of living world"
I agree, not totally it's been foreshadowed but not enough for this but I sti find it good because just like these guys noones expecting him to actually die
I love that we've also now collected the full set! Kuwabara: a full human Yusuke: a human who became a demon Hiei: a full demon Kurama: a demon who became a human
Fun fact, one of the members of the SDF is voiced by Troy Baker. I assume it must've been very very early into his career cause he would go on to obviously do much bigger projects
Im super happy you guys get so hype over this episode, because after watching this show enough i still just love revisiting this scene. A particular favorite is koenma in disbelief that Yusuke could ever just turn evil on a dime. And then the absolute relief as he laughs to say hes going with him. Love how this represents their strong friendship now
30:21 haven't watched the anime in a long time so I'm not sure if it was explained properly there (although from my recollection, I remember it being explained in the same episode), but according to the manga, it was because of Yusuke having grown strong enough from his stint as a spirit detective that his demonic trait has "accepted" him and then expressed itself when he died the second time, as opposed to his first death where he wasn't yet strong enough. But according to King Yama, this transition to demonhood actually began the first time Yusuke was brought to life. Basically the trait was awoken albeit inactive. Yusuke then acquired the required "strength level" for his demon trait to be able to be activated, but it still couldn't take over while he was alive. Hence, he needed to technically die for it to fully activate.
I remember back in the 4 saint beasts arc, Suzaku starts to think the Yusuke isn't human but a demon (paraphrasing). and yall theorizing that yusuke was actually a demon. Thinking about when you would see this episode.
The power up didn't initially sit with me. But it has sooo so much narrative value and expertly connects chapter black arc with 3 kings arc and finally the beautiful climax
Good setup and pay off. Setting up Yusuke's power as heavily repressed throughout his life, only to come out when he dies, the first and second time. Maybe the energy wave combination of Toguro vs Yusuke, it going from red to blue, was all Yusuke.
This is much better than MOST of the 11th Hour Deus Ex Machina BS Powerups that exist in anime because of the character conflict, introspection, and pretty deep topics it sets up. Yes it is 100% a trope but in true Togashi genius fashion, he uses that trope as a complete deconstruction of the genre.

I was worried about their reaction a bit, but they liked it a lot! This resurrection and demon powers from almost nothing is a bit divisive in the fandom. Which is understandable. It was truly convenient asspull, but it's OK... This is gonna be fun! Actually I think Kuwabara's weapon is by far the most powerful. That's the only thing Sensui actually dodged, he defended, blocked everything else. Just Kuwabara's speed is low. And not the smartest warrior too. He's suffering in Okuyasu syndrome. A super powerful ability, but with a user not that capable to maximize its potential.
Big agree about kuwabara, was hoping he would at least land a hit to prove it though. And Yusuke, yea it does kinda come out of left field but there is enough thematic forshadowing after multiple viewings that it still works for me. Even if it could have just as easily not been true
Lol love y'alls reactions to this episode and finding out that Yusuke has demon blood 🤣 and yes Puu looks amazing when he's big, this episode is 1 of my favorites of this show & the next episode is funny & amazing, I also love Kuwabara Hiei and Kurama's faces on seeing Yusuke return lol 😆
17:14 I know it mostly couldn't be heard since you guy's enthusiasm was at its peak (and that's great!). But even so, gotta say the narrator's end quote here IS SO GOOD.
The Yusuke demon (well he's a mazoku which is a more rare and powerful demon that also generally eat humans) thing has been subtly hinted although not as fleshed out as I would've liked. What I do like and we see this in Togashi's work (albeit you mainly see it in other works like every JoJo part) is the duality between the protagonist and antagonist. I love how completely different Yusuke and Sensei are. Another thing to note, is the power levels here and what they mean. Keep in mind, this is the ENTRY into demon world and we already know there's B-class (Younger Toguro was Upper B), A-class, S-class and even in S-class the very top can defeat numerous S-class demons at once. Everyone in that Special Defense Team is AT LEAST A-class, meaning any of the 9 could've handled Younger Toguro with ease. Koenma's pacifier also can contain A-class level demons Currently: It's stated that Kurama & Hiei have brought back there dormant demon potential and essentially back at the power they once held. We know that a couple of them in the Special Defense Team was able to bring down Yoko Kurama and we know that backstory but Hiei's will later be revealed as to why his power was less earlier (This isn't a spoiler since Sensui has already stated this). They are currently in A-class. Kuwabara with his dimension sword is also A-class (if he was a demon). Yusuke was also there as well before he died. Sensui with his sacred energy is currently in S-class and it's assumed that Yusuke with his demon energy is now there as well since he's about to fight him
I love the dub but I don't really like how they makes a big deal out of the term "Mazoku". Mazoku literally just Demon race, and by saying that Yusuke is a decendent of the Mazoku, it makes it sound like he has the bloodline of some super special breed of demon when it just means he has demon blood. They explained in the original, that passing down demon traits via Atavism is a trait shared by all demons B rank or higher. So if Hiei or Kurama ever got together with a human woman and had kids, they could also recessively pass on their traits as well.
"it makes it sound like he has the bloodline of some super special breed of demon" I mean, he kinda does? The sub says "Genetic hybridization with a human that only A-class Demons or higher can achieve."
@@TimoKanal I guess, but it still creates a good deal of confusion. I watched the dub first, and as a result I thought that Mazoku was some special class of elite demon, above the likes of regular demons like Hiei and Kurama. It is only afterwards that I realized my mistake.
@@randomanimefan1000 I mean I don't know about you but being the descendant of the strongest demon seems kinda important. A lot better than some random no name c tier
@@sammy6805 To use Naruto as an example, the difference to me is like being the descendent of the 3rd Hokage vs being an Uchiha. Being descendent from the 3rd gives you clout but doesn't make you inherently superior to any random no name ninja. Being an Uchiha gives you Sharingan.
There are a couple of things you guys are overlooking about the SDF. Such as that they are trained to fight S class demons (of which that level rises infinitely) but only as a full group and even then it is only against the bare minimum level of S class. Individually they can fight and defeat top A class demons at most so they don't stand a chance against any S class individually or when not all together. Also you have to take into account that it is possible that they have never encountered a demon above A class before.
When it comes to hiei I like to think he looks down on humans. I think he sees this more as, one of my most trusted friends is not only alive but just became a higher class. He can worry about being S class later 😂
Are there actually people who think they can do better than Togashi with the Yusuke power up? If so, I dare these arrogant jerks to make their own manga, AND make it as goated as YYH.
many vids ago, i said sensui was the strongest human in the series. this is what i meant. yusuke could never surpass sensui as a human. but as a demon? well, you're gonna find out soon.
I love Yusuke so much, he can be that much of a dick hahaha This is one of those episodes that the first time I watched I disliked, but on rewatch is kinda cool, Puu's new form is fire
Well, the Demon Blood originally wasn't taken well. They don't show it in the anime, unfortunately, but even Humans can become S-Class Demon Level through training. The problem was, Yusuke didn't have time for that, and having him become a Demon made it easier... Although, I also think it adds to his character in a unique and interesting way
I never understood people’s hate of the Demon blood concept, I think it’s cool. As a an amateur biologist and writer, i think demon atavism in Yusuke was always hinted at pretty nicely
@@bgvo4373 Kuwabara is proof humans can attain S class if they gain an ability through awareness and their bodies evolving to change. I mean that’s basically how each of the new psychics are technically classified as “A class” threats because their abilities make them that dangerous despite their physical prowess being average human or below
yeaaa the mazoku stuff was all setup and paid off in a single episode. It is last minute, deus ex machina BS. Definitely not the strongest move from Togashi. But ultimately I don't care too much, I'm still having fun.
