Yeah but the problem with that is they already had the perfectly valid explanation of Sensui waiting for the current spirit detective to get strong enough so that humanity would have a fair chance in his ideological war which is why his demon portal machination only started after finding elder Toguro and learning about Yusuke winning the dark tournament.

While you're not wrong, what they were pointing out was moreso that we didn't need this sudden addition of a terminal disease, since we already were sold on Sensui's motivation from everything else we had seen prior. If you took away the disease twist, nothing significant would really change.

Well I'm pretty sure that's wrong cause it was specified that he waited until konenama replaced him, meaning if there was no spirit detective he would have just let him self croak? Let his entire dream go to waste? No they pulled this unamed disease out of thin air like atleast call it cancer or something dude has no symptoms there was no foreshadowing, was it just the drop dead instantly disease ? Dude didn't even have a cough or a sneeze

​@@the_markoman This is true. I always thought the reveal of his illness was strange but not enough to ruin the arc or anything.

I totally understand people feeling like the terminal illness reveal was unneeded but I think I understand why they did it. Yes, sensui's personality was fractured, but he was still a thinking and reasoning person. Given time, I think sensui would have eventually been able to come to a different conclusion. But being diagnosed with a terminal illness meant he no longer had time to mull things over. He needed his answer immediately and if Yusuke couldn't be the one to give him his answer then nobody could. I think of sensui weren't already dying, the tunnel to demon world plan wouldn't have ever been a thing. But I could be completely wrong. Togashi usually has a reason for stuff though.

It would've still worked better if there was more foreshadowing.

I think it was done great because even with the power up he didn't win the tournament.

Well Raizen also explains that during his meeting with Yusuke: "That human woulf have killed you." and the whole point behind Raizen taking over was that while Yusuke was now on par with Sensui, if not above him, he didn't know how to properly use said new power. Yusuke himself admits that during the fight between his spirit gun missing and being unable to sneak up on Sensui in the sand.

@@magustobias8827 Raizen is one of those that sorta throws me. I get the point of him, but he litterally is dying and at not even half his strength, and yet he could maybe beat Yomi and Mukuro together. So, in his prime and well fed, he's stronger than the UPPER S-Class. Honestly, I wish we knew more or got an explanation for why he was so absurdly strong when compared to the new generation of S-Class

@@bradleybarnett1469 Together no, his currently self was around their level with the implication that Mukuro was probably the strongest of the 3 here when enraged at this time. Also Raizen's comrades and sparring partners were around Yomi's level so in his prime he probably wasn't absurdly stronger than current, just fairly stronger and more importantly healthier. Being half the man he was doesn't have to be literal power level.

@@bradleybarnett1469 I’m more thrown off by his brutal beat down of Sensui. I thought this dude was motivated by not killing humans for food, yet apparently massacring an s-class human so his ancestor won’t is fair game.

To be fair, it's the same w/ Toguro. The difference is that more questions were answered w/ Sensui.

@@jp3813 idk about that, the most important reveals about Toguro is that he was Genkai's lover, he carried guilt from not defending his students from Kairen, and that he secretly wanted to die. And all of that has been pretty much resolved by the end of the DT arc. Also Sensui basically has double the amount of reveals than Toguro.

@@nikolab.4065 There were plenty more w/ him not being dead after Yukina's rescue, that he was in cahoots w/ Sakyo all along, that he used to be a Dark Tournament champion and wished for a demonic body, that he arranged for Genkai to be resurrected, that he basically mentored Yusuke as an opponent, etc... All his unanswered complexities were summarized by Koenma himself.

@@jp3813 but all those complexities were answered though: everything was set up just so he could ensure his death. Being nigh-immortal required Toguro to make many extra steps so he wouldn't just heal any damage dealt to him, and he needed an opponent that could obliterate him (basically one-shot him) to make that happen. So while his plans were complex, there is absolutely no mystery to why he did what he did. Also, the reveals/twists about him you mentioned are basically just subsections to the 3 main ones I mentioned. 1. Him winning the DT already and wishing to become a demon = just ingredients for the actual reveal about him and Genkai, and their falling out. 2. The reason why he demonized himself upon winning the DT = because of Kairen. 3. Him powering up Yusuke through elaborate planning (like killing Genkai only to have her ressurected, "killing" Kuwabara) = ensuring his death because he realized making himself into a nigh-immortal demon was a mistake. In short, every bit of info we learn about Toguro ties into each other and/or loops back around into something we already knew. And while you could just say "Sensui did all he did just so he could visit the demon world/die by a demon's hand", the reveals prior to it vary and some are way different from the others, almost unrelated. You could've easily written Sensui without sacred energy, his illness, OR maybe even chapter black, because they didn't impact the main goal at all or just barely had impact. But adding all those is a welcome addition and in turn made Sensui very unique and interesting. Also the difference between him and Toguro is that Toguro's reveals are circular and looping around, and Sensui's are very linear and escalating.

We all pretty much agree that both characters have many revelations that aim to achieve different things. Another distinction is the fact that Toguro was ever present in two arcs rather than one. Thus, there is a recontextualization to his character like Darth Vader had in the middle of the original Star Wars trilogy. An unexpected depth of development as opposed to Sensui who was introduced as a mysterious antagonist.

Between those three, the enjoying the fight trope seems to be the most generic. Especially w/ the coming battle between Yusuke & Yomi.

@@jp3813 That's because he fight only for survival and killing those monsters, this was the first fight he trully enjoyed. Bc he fought someone stronger and with so much potential, and as a bonus, a half monster.

Same. They are talking about it being dumb from a logical point of view as if the scene is somehow logically driven and not an emotional freekout Yusuke has because he was essentially cheated out of the fight by his relative taking over his body. Yusuke has never let people meddle in his fights.

I like the final arc as well but man the missed potential is maddening when I re watched it recently.

Eh. I know the fighting in the last arc is pretty boring, but i think this arc is underrated in shounen. Alot of shounen skip ending the character’s story arcs with a clear conclusion. They just give us a timeskip. YYH does this perfectly, but makes the fighting take a back seat going forward.

@@jumong2007 You do realise the manga is the one that was rushed, the anime fleshed out a lot of the things that weren’t fully addressed in the manga and gave a more complete ending to the series. Clearly you’re talking outta your a$$.
