FB sticking with SA station. People, if you are part of the pileup you need to LISTEN and pay attention to what the “DX” is doing.

I’m really glad you posted this video because I just had this same experience today on my very first POTA activation. There was so much of a pile up that there was intermod and my radio was just squealing with no breaks between elements. I still got 20 contacts but it was HARD work. It’s comforting to see that a much more experienced op had many of the same problems I did. Thanks! 73 de WX0X

Pileups--especially when everyone zero-beats you--can be brutal. This is, of course, why DXpeditions and DX in general use split so often. It spreads out the pileup in a very manageable way. Split is not common or expected in SOTA/POTA, so the best thing a CW hunter/chaser can do, is vary their transmit frequency a bit. Thanks for the comment!

Not the usual relaxing K4SWL video for sure! That pileup just wouldn't stop. It was educational seeing how you managed the chaos. The last SOTA activation I did before my foot disability was in the snow and fog on Santiago Peak. I've always loved the quiet and calm in those weather conditions. Sort of a contrast with the mayhem on the bands for this activation.

Nice work Thomas! I love my QCX(s) Just a thought for logging time. Turn on the clock function on in the menu and set the time to UTC before you start. This way you can look at the radio when logging time. It will go back to zero when you unplug it. Menu 7.9 to turn on the clock. Menu 6.8 to set time.

Just a heads up you can work split on the QCX, I think you would have done better. However, when Europeans hear you they just TX over and over regardless of who you are working or indeed calling. Very poor operating by some stations. But anyway well done my friend you did well and that QCX does not have an AGC so strong stations do sound rough, not the speaker as you thought. That makes me shiver just looking at your hands get redder and the ice on the trees! Just a few ideas to toss around, get a pair of extra extra large mittens, not gloves. Get it large enough that you can cut a slot near the seam and insert the paddles. With the one hand you can work the paddle, and with a gloved hand you can hold the key still from the outside of the mitten. Or, have something like a quilted tube about 12 to 18 inches long with an Inside diameter large enough for your hands. Put both your hands, one in each end, in there with the key until you need to use one to work the radio controls. These should keep the wind off your hands, and also trap a little heat in there too.

I must confess… I still struggle with my copy. My logs are a ‘mess & best guess.’ I use a QCard to aid in my keying. I use the Keyer memories. And Thank you Hans for the awesome Decoder! It's funny, but you'll find you're on the other end of a pile-up someday and your brain will be so locked into running the activation that any fears of managing the pileup will fade away. At the end of the day, you're in charge of the pileup. Just practice patience and send lots of question marks. :) That's my strategy!

Hi, Linas! (This reply may be a duplicate--my last one simply seemed to vanish.) I do think having an EFHW that's so short (for 20M) makes it easy to deply vertically even when the trees aren't tall. I was quite surprised with the results as well. I've noticed that you've been having a lot of fun with the QCX-Mini on your excellent channel as well. Also, I'm planning to make a cap hat for my AX1 like you did. Just need to sort out a wire that can be folded while in my backpack, and straightened into form when operating without harming the tensile strength too much. I'll eventually figure it out--transport in my backpack for SOTA is the only think I need to sort out. :) All the best! 73, Thomas K4SWL

Tim, I have often wondered if running RIT in those pileups would get a little separation. They are usually too hectic for me to try. Just a thought
@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL 2 года назад
So the only thing about running split or using RIT is that it's not a common practice in SOTA/POTA or WWFF. No one on the other end expects it necessarily. Calling out regions helps, but that pileup was unruly and I'm not actually certain that would have stopped some of the ops from intentionally sending their call over others. This sort of pileup isn't super common. It was insanity, though! :)
@owlcricker-k7ulm
@owlcricker-k7ulm 2 года назад
@@ThomasK4SWL true. My thought is to try to get to the side of the zero beaters to discriminate signals a little better. Running the RIT slightly up and down to clarity the signals. In testing while others are activating, 30 to 50 hz helps a lot. I have not had the skill to do it when I am activating personally. It is a goal

@ThomasK4SWL
@ThomasK4SWL Год назад
If you have the AGC mod in your QCX-Mini, I would definitely use earphones. I think all of the new models may have the AGC? Without AGC, it's better to use a small speaker in case you receive a really strong signal. It can get quite loud. It's an amazing little radio!
@davidryeburn4010
@davidryeburn4010 2 года назад
Here's one way you might compensate for the lack of AGC in the QCX. Take the audio that you are going to feed to your external amplifier and speaker and build out the hot side with a series resistor. You'll have to experiment to find the right size but my guess is that a few hundred ohms would do. Then shunt the audio (far side of the build-out resistor) to ground with a pair of diodes, one with cathode grounded and the other with anode grounded. When peak audio voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode (probably several hundred millivolts) the diode will clip and the level will not exceed that value. The two diodes will take care of positive and negative sides of the signal waveform. The build-out resistor gives the diodes something to work against; they aren't dead shorts but have a finite resistance when conducting (but until then they are in effect open circuits). Then continue on to your amplifier. You'll need another gain control after the clipping diodes to set the level that comes out of the amplified speaker (unless the amplified speaker has its own built-in gain conrol). No signal, no matter how strong, will be any louder than what is set by the clipping level, but weak signals below that level will stay weak. So you'll have to set the gain control on the transceiver appropriately, so that moderately strong signals begin to clip. Too much gain and everything will clip and it will sound horrible. Too little gain and only extremely loud signals will clip and you'll get way too much variation in perceived loudness. Play with the two gain controls, the one in the transceiver and the one after the diodes, until it works the way you want it to work. But you should be able to set those two controls once and then forget about them ever after. I'm surprised that transceivers without AGC don't have such simple circuitry built-in; the resistor, two diodes and additional gain control would be pretty inexpensive. However it might not work all that well if used with low-impedance headphones instead of with an external amplifier. You want the diodes, when they conduct, to have a much lower impedance than the useful load connected across them. I used something like this when many years ago I used a Hallicrafters S20-R receiver whose AGC only worked for AM and not for CW, but I used it with high-impedance headphones instead of with an external amplifier, and with a 6AL5 dual diode. I biased the two diodes with a pair of 1.5 V cells, since the 6AL5 diodes would conduct at very low signal levels, and you don't want the diodes to conduct immediately, only when the signal level exceeds a certain value. Solid state diodes will have a built-in minimum conduction voltage so you don't need to bias them. This will work for CW. For 'phone, it will make the audio sound awful. David VE7EZM and AF7BZ

Hey, Thomas! I'm doing my first steps in CW (thanks to your amazing videos). However, I've already had a chance to encounter such a crazy pile-up as yours - when activating SOTA SP/BZ-050. What I did was working in split for about 10 minutes to "unload" it. That trick really helped. I picked up several stations that switched to split in an eye flash, then I got back to normal operation and continued working as before. I think it worked well overall, as finally other stations could really distinguish when I was sending and didn't add fuel to the fire. But I have to admit, that I had added "QSX 1 UP" before to the memory for emergency use ;) It was a pro tip I've got from a really experienced buddy of mine. That was a great hint from him! So I think that the fact that split is not popular in POTA/SOTA doesn't really mean that we can't use it ;) In crazy time like yours on the video, I think it's well justified. And it works!
