This is my State of the collection as of the end of 2022. Let me know what you think, specifically:
1. What are your favorite watches out of the collection? Least favorite?
2. What kinds of watches should I add next?
3. Based on what I have collected so far, what do you think I should add next?
4. What is the watch you are most satisfied about acquiring this year?

I think a lot of people think watches are too big simply because the RU-vid watch community says they’re too big, without considering how they personally feel. That Christopher ward looks absolutely fine to me.
@pedrothevenard
@pedrothevenard Год назад
I guarantee you that a lot of people want to wear bigger watches but feel bad for liking them because of the current watch community. I love the looks of many watches under 40mm, I can't stand how they look on my wrist though, few watches that are 40mm are OKish depending on case and lug to lug, 41 mm usually is my absolute minimum without a bezel though 42 is better, 42mm with a bezel 43 to 44 is better. And the sad part is that I love 43mm, and that's a really really rare size nowadays, because guys with 8 inch wrists like me, it even bigger, are trying really hard to believe that 40mm fits all bullshit.

@@user-eq1jv3oo5v Apart from it’s not though - it’s literally a few millimetres difference. I have a thin wrist and have some big watches, and no one has ever said they look stupid/too big for you.

I agree completely. Kind of sick of the trend toward everything becoming smaller and all the trash talking the community does toward anything over 40-42mm. And then companies giving in and making their watches technically worse in terms of capabilities or styling to make them smaller. It's getting harder to find watches in the sizes I like with all the features I want. One case being tudor. Tudor is trending toward making everything 39mm and smaller, which is fine. The problem in my eyes is that their newer watches are getting the toolless micro adjustment, which is something I love, but it's only available on their newer, and thus, smaller watches. I think they just need a full line refresh so I can get a standard black bay with micro adjustment. I get people wanting smaller watches. It's fine... buy what you want to buy. My beef is more with the manufacturers I like following trends and seemingly giving up on bigger watches entirely.

I like that it's a varied colourful collection and with 3 watches from quality British makers. I have a blue CW C60 pro diver, 38mm and the quality is way above the price point - a good way to go if you want a "proper" diver. You mention the Selita movement not being great but you will find it in many non Swatch group Swiss brands around the 2-3k price point. Like you I have a slime wrist so prefer smaller watches and I reckon the PRX looks good on you. Don't listen to others who criticise your choices, buy what you like, not what others think you should and enjoy them for what they are.

Incredible watches. I’m 6’4”, around 250 lbs so when the “big watch trend” was around I was loving it and kind of just thought that’s what watches looked like. Now all the 36 and 39mm watches, even some of the tiny 40-41mm watches like the PRX are deceptively small as they look much larger in pictures or renderings. This collection is a dream man. I love micros, I’d kill for the Zodiac, the CW, and the Underdog which is actually closer to my preferred size than I had assumed.

Nice collection. Some very unique watches and it’s nice to see some personality in a SOTC - rather than the usual suspects over and over again. Given your tastes and lifestyle I’d maybe suggest taking a look at Longines flagship or sector dial - pricey but beautiful. Or affordably you could consider a Lorier - they make some fantastic vintage inspired pieces that would be right up your street - Baltic too.
@jrsnow94
@jrsnow94 Год назад
Hey thanks for the kind comment. I went on the Longines website and looked at what you mentioned and agree that Longines in general matches my style-I love the classic heritage-focused language. I prefer their interpretation to Baltic. Loiter-have you owned one? I haven’t, so I’m only judging by pictures, but some of the case/bracelet finishing looks rough. Maybe that’s asking too much
@drdesign6886
@drdesign6886 Год назад
@@jrsnow94 I have owned a Lorier in past - the finishing was decent for price point - the Crystal is a stunner, but hands perhaps were overly rough around edges. I owned, as many do, quite a few in the sub $1k range until I went for the grander stuff later. I found the Stuff in the $3k+ category underwhelming after a time, I think I’ve realised I just don’t love (or need) an in-house decorated movement - and that is what you are paying for. I’ve settled in the $1-3k range - and am so happy, this really is my sweet spot. Oris, Sinn, Longines, Nomos, Junghans, SLA seiko’s, Hamilton, Chris Ward, Monta. Good luck building the collection and finding your own sweet spot - we are all different (well we should be anyhow!).

It hasn’t shipped yet, I am dying to get it in my hands. I love the classic look of it. I also would like to get a Rado coupole blue dial. I have my eye on a few luxury brand watches that I can’t afford right now - the Meistersinger one hand lunascope, Glashütte original PanoMaticLunar green dial, and Arnold and Son’s Perpetual Moon blue dial. Maybe one day.

@@MattL7568 great taste! My only ‘higher’ end luxury watch remaining is an IWC Portofino gifted to me by my father. All the watches you mention are stunning - wish you good fortune in someday owning 1 or 2 of them.

You have a very interesting collection and I find the story behind your purchase decisions and how your watches integrate into your collection very cool. Regarding your 'bauhaus needs', I own the Junkers 6050-2 and it is a lovely watch if you like the style. Of course a Max Bill would bring some more heritage to the table. If you want a smaller diver with some nice color options for a reasonable price, I would suggest checking out the Glycine combat sub line, either the 36 or 39 mm case dimensions. The burgundy and brown colorways look very nice in my opinion. Given your color preferences and your small wrist, what I would totally recommend as am amazing every day watch would be the Sinn 556. I have the mother of pearl black dial and it is still fighting for the favorite spot in my collection. I think they released some more colorful options of the 556 either in 2022 or 2021.

I like this video. It was a cool watch looking at a new watch collector like myself. For your sentimental pieces it's good that you keep them and u let it be known that they aren't really apart of the collection. More like keep sakes. I really like the Super Sea Wolf, personally not my fav color, but I like the design of that watch. Love the bracelet. I Also like your "Baby Alpinist". That is a great do-it-all watch. I like how that CW looks, but I'm not sure about the brand. Me personally; but it looks great. I like the Bambinos, but I don't think that one fits your style. There are more Bambinos that have more nicer dials that fit more into your collection/philosophy - to me. For my suggestions, try An-Ordain, their dials are beautiful. You have a Zelos, but like the Bambino, I don't think it truly matches your philosophy-to me. They have some beautiful dials that are very colorful also. Try Looking into Rado Coupoles for a nice dress watch with some nice dial action/price. I actually like your PRX, I think it fits your wrist perfectly, but when you said the 36 is too small and the 42 is too large, I feel you. I wanted one but couldn't get the right fit. I have a Visodate as my Tissot watch in my collection. Oris has a dial made of recycled plastic that I see your name all over. Look into Citizen for a rugged Diver at a great price. I have the Eco-Drive version, but the FuGu model is better, it comes with a sapphire crystal. I think your like me and have a few impulse buys as you are starting out. Your taste will refine and your collection will round out. For a grail watch, I see Grand Seiko in your future. Their dials are too die for and they are very much on the dressier side. Keep up the great work! P.s. I feel you on the Max Bill, I am an aspiring architect; so a Max Bill is Def in my future.... Also, have you ever checked out Yema? The Bronze Superman Diver with the maroon dial is a winner. They're a French brand with some good history behind them

Sorry that your Studio Underdog ⌚ does not keep time well. My recommendation for a nice dress ⌚ under $1000, though literally a few dollars short, is the Pitzmann First Edition. I do not own one yet but like the enamel dial with blued hands. The Pitzmann Second Edition is also very nice too. Also, collecting is a personal endeavor, but I think that you could get a Nomos if you bought fewer ⌚ too. Again, collecting is a personal endeavor, but you have ⌚ that appear to be redundant in style and form. Not a bad thing or even criticism, but a Nomos could be within your reach with fewer purchases. Also, check out Chronext for a reduced price on a Nomos. Not sure if I can recommend Jomashop. I have heard more bad than good things about it. You might also look into Hamilton.

Ward retro diver watches all look better than this one you have like the bronze and blue bezel ones, same for the Mojito...save up for a Tudor if you can. Get Casio Duro; any G-Shock; find a cheap Breitling (do some research on those!), check Hamilton Khaki. The way I see it your price level is based on the Chr. Ward which appears to be the most expensive...? Also, perhaps check pre-owned markets like Chrono24 and find a place where you can reliably service those watches, even if you buy a damaged one. Tissot has some amazing chronos for example and you DO need a good GMT. Collection is not gonna be cheap though in the future. Good luck!

Haha it looks like we have very different tastes! I do appreciate the advice though. Te Dan Henry is probably going, as is the Bulova. Don't know where/how I'd see them as I'm fed up with eBay taking their cut. I think you are right-the way forward is to move up to the next tier which is something like a Tudor. I was also thinking maybe a rail master or aqua terra in the 3k range. Which model are you thinking? BB58? I do really like the 1926 Opaline dial but don't need another white dial...

Yeah save for a Tudor. If you want to literally die of boredom looking down at your wrist and seeing a ubiquitous $4k Rolex homage.

Yes, it seems we do. I am also not a fan of Fossil brands like Skagen but it means a lot to you and that is what matters. Am also a big fan of microbrands as well. It seems you are looking for a diver and a dress watch. Check Longines again, Zulu time, Tissot or the secondary market on Chrono24 for old Jaeger LeCoultre or Grand Seikos around 3k. Rolex created Tudor as the affordable brand so ofc their designs are derived from Rolex. The grey and blue BB58s are awesome to me. Casio Duro blue, Seiko 5 turtle or the new orange one from this year, Citizen Kugu was it?, Doxa, Signum Cuda, Longines Hydroconquest, Zelos - I would get any and all of them for a diver. I forgot Mido and Frederique Constant! You can do better than the 1926...

Since you asked, sell the Bulova, don't keep what you don't like, get a Hamilton khaki field 38mm auto on the bracelet, I know that selling watches is heartbreaking, even if you don't wear it, but it's good for you, and your wife won't get that mad, you will be able to keep a tight collection, other than that maybe go for a workout inexpensive Casio like a F-91W, or even better a Casio calculator watch, every high school teacher should have a calculator watch, no matter the subject.

I laugh a little when you say you are missing a gmt watch. Are you really? I had a gmt and it’s only function for me was as an am pm indicator when setting a dead watch.

I know, I know, it’s all relative…I really don’t need a watch in the first place, but in terms of an unnecessary 15-watch collection, it would be helpful. I teach classes online in another time zone and travel sometimes so I would use the function.

Stop buying so many watches, most of these are pretty low quality (ie one has a hair on dial, another running real fast). $200 hundred here, $400 there…. It adds up. You could have purchased a couple really nice watches with all the money you spent on these. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice…others have mentioned going the consolidation route…I think this early in my collecting journey when I’m finding out what I like, I prefer 15 cheaper watches to 1-2 expensive ones, but as I mature and figure out what I like I’ll consolidate.
@MattL7568

I think it’s perfectly fine to have a lot of watches versus 2 or 3 luxury watches. There’s no right or wrong way to collect. It makes more sense when you are starting out to buy less expensive watches as you figure out your tastes. Imagine doing what you suggest and you end up paying a lot of money for a rolex that you end up not liking and not wearing, and then you have to sell it at a loss of thousands of dollars. I think he’s doing it the right way imo.

Whats a nice watch? Its all subjective. If you really knew your horology you would know MOST expensive watches are actually running movements based on cheapy watches.

Your collection is missing for sure a GMT do you like the new Seikos GMT ? Go for the black dial , Sapphire cristal, ceramic bezel half black and half grey only in day light you’ll see it it’s a very good option or else look for Sinn 105 UTC black dial version Sellita 300-2 56 hrs power reserve around 1600 € in the website store I mention downside, your Tissot PRX Quartz have a push and pull crow or it’s a screw down? ido like the design my opinion should be an automatic but … not my collection, the Orient Bambino for what is style I think it’s a cool piece too , the “watermelon” Whoooooo that one I thought what😮 ! That’s a very cool piece for summertime sports watch anyway my thoughts, the Islander not my cup he should bought other versions I live in Europe that’s why I just had one can’t justify the taxes etc too much cash , the Christopher Ward now have much cool designs that one it’s too dressy but it’s your style plus I do like the design of it that Chronograph seagull it does looks ok but sell it and buy another one ( that go for an Hamilton) a diver I’ll buy a Seiko SkX (homage from Long Island watches ) and last buy a Sinn 104 it’s an awesome watch with a Sellita movement very well done 👍 in think there’s a AD in US but try this guys from Netherlands Serious Watches 😉 ask for Mark by WhatsApp and bargain for a better price plus see their watch brands collection all Ad dealers plus Express shipping and for you in the US no taxes above 1000$ US , plus do you know a brand called Formex COSC certified I’ve got same wrist size 17,5 cm around 6,7 inches bought a Essence Thirtynine beautiful watch 100 m push crow I think your Tissot PRX it’s same correct? have a Reef diver 300 m screw down crown etc if you like quality for good price COSC certified you got it Sinn are not certified but for me Sinn ( know things are bad in Europe everything is 10/15 % more expensive) buy it know or buy Islander Watches my opinion! All the best Amigo do like your humble collection! Have a very good Christmas and a happy New year! Do you like The new Zelos GMT spearfish version they look cool I think in Zelos site they are sold out try Google for Serious Watches for sure you’ll be surprised with the brands they have and prices specially for you in US !
