This song came out when my old ass was in high school. This song actually inspired to become a Big Brother. Changed my life forever. Love your channel JB
Thank you for becoming a Big Brother. My Big Brother, Big Sister changed my life immensely and though we're not in touch anymore I still remember them fondly and how they helped me and yours will to. :)
I was the same I was 12 when it was out in Belfast Northern Ireland, I was in and of the care system them so it hits home with me, it was the peak of the troubles here then to so seen so much horror
Jaime Gibb the real figure for the American video was 21 out of 36 were found. But the video gets remade, when people are found they are taken off and a new missing person is put on. The video is also edited for every country it is shown in to show local missing people.
THE BEST ERAS WERE THE 50's, 60's, 70's AND THE 80's (THE BEST of THE BEST, woohoo)! :-D UNfortunately, WE CAN'T GO Back But oh How i WISH TO GOD That IT COULD BE POSSIBLE! :-( Yep, i Already knew about Human Trafficking, Sex Trafficking And/or SELLING BABY PARTS Since MAYBE 10 YEARS AGO, But UNfortunately THERE ARE SO MANY DEAF AND BLIND Folks out there WHO REFUSE To BELIEVE IT SO THEY LIVE IN a FAKE "TRAPPED BUBBLE" And THEY'RE ALWAYS IN DENIAL ABOUT HOW Or WHY These EVIL THINGS ARE HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ALL OVER THE WORLD (ALL OVER THE WORLD). SMH. :-( :-(
7:40 "I can feel the world's pain and I just want to make it go away." James, please realize that you are doing just that. Don't be discouraged if the results aren't seen immediately. With your existence and presence on this platform, a change for the positive has already been affected. You are of a rare breed and you're changing the world.
In another video where they reacted to this song, I found out that most of the people in the various versions of this video have been found (they made different versions for different countries and updated it as people were found). One person didn't want to be found, since she'd run away from an abusive home (I think it was) and didn't want to go back.
One thing we couldn't do when this video was released was to google each child's name to find out what happened to them. It adds a whole new dimension to the video.
Yep, she wrote to the band years later to thank them for forcing her to go back to a living hell. In the British/Euro version which I was watching in 1993 little did I know that two of the missing women were actually victims of a serial killer & were buried in a garden within about a 30 minute walk from my house in 1991-they weren't discovered until 2007, the guy who did it was at that point already in prison for murdering another woman in 2006. He is suspected of other murders stretching back possibly to the 1960's. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Tobin#

A total of *36* kids were featured in the *USA* video version. As a result of the video, *25* of the children were found -- but the following *11* remain unaccounted for: people.com/crime/missing-kids-soul-asylum-runaway-train/? ( *People Magazine* article dated May 31, 2019 )
My cousin joyvaline Martinez was missing for years. We didn't know what happened for so long and sadly she was a victim of a serial killer. Thank God they caught him and gave some closure to my family and his other victims family. This world can be so dark 😢
Skylab thank you so very much for your kind words, I truly appreciate. Oh wow Its a small world isn't it. She really was beautiful, taken far too young. This world can be so scary and dark sometimes.
I was one of them. Even after you grow, escape, grow and succeed ... years pass and you're comfortable, you never quite get all the way over it, t's always back there in your mind.
This song came out when I was in high school, and even then, in the midst of teenage angst and anger and all that, this was one song and video that absolutely gutted me. The lyrics were relatable, but the video took it to a whole new level. Even now, hearing this song makes me cry, but it still ranks high among some of my favorite songs ever. Very powerful.
This song and video always made me cry whenever it came on MTV or VH1. It's been a long, long time since I last saw/heard it and it still makes me tear up.
If today's artists could think like these people thought. It wasn't about flashing your cars and gold, it was about helping the world. And a great song, also. Donating your video to helping others instead of showing off yourself is so foreign now.
I grew up surrounded by domestic violence. I saw a lot of stuff no kid should see before I was even 12. I thought that was life. That was it. When this song came out, I cried. For the first time in my life, I felt like I wasn’t alone. I appreciate your reactions and how open you are with your emotions. Thank you so much.
My favorite of theirs. Excellent song. They have some awesome songs. Great music. It does stink being an empath, has been a curse as much as a blessing for me.
Yes!! So many kids living on the street called home or came home because of this video. It was so successful they made a second video with different missing or run away kids!!❤️
Makes me cry everytime. This band cared enough to show real missing people. I wish bands today would band together and do good things like putting missing people pictures on their videos.
The 90’s grunge/alternative music was full of meaningful songs such as Jeremy by Pearl Jam, this one you reacted to by Soul Asylum, Nutshell by Alice In Chains and many more. That was the last great music era! I was lucky to be part of it and to live it through those years...
I remember reading once that the information for the missing people was tailored to the country it was played in, and that when people were found they replaced it with other missing people’s details. We had different missing people feature in the song in Australia.
Runaway Train was a great song in it's day (still is). An ultra mellow song that came out round about the same time was "74, 75," by the Conell's or Connell's . A massive hit. Couldn't fail to like it.
This song came out when Tom Petty had a new album out and when I first heard it I thought it must be a release from it. Always liked this one. Soul Asylum turned out to be a good one.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought it was Petty when it came out. I had arguments with people about who it was lol. I'm not wrong often but will admit when I am, and this was one of those times lol.
Interesting. I can hear it now that you mention it, but I wouldn't have made that mistake myself. On some sounds, the voices are really similar, but not on all sounds. The overall instrumentation certainly could be a Tom Petty song, though! It's a beautiful song about an ugly side of reality.
I was about 10 or 11 when this came out.. I still remember seeing the music video with my mom.. it left a really sick feeling inside of me and still feel the same way when I watch it.. beautiful song, but just hard to watch.
This kind of music has been buried for a long time and I'm so glad that people like you are discovering it for the first time as well as exposing this song to a new generation. Thank you for this👍
This is so sad, you have nothing to be sorry for. You are a wonderful normal person. I actually cried watching your reaction and I'm 48 years old. I wish someone could remake this every year to help more. This video actually saved many.
I grew up listening to this band and still to this day this song hurts me inside when I listen to it. Also I agree that this song should be used to protect todays kids.
You can look up here on youtube, The Missing People Choir, they were on Britain's Got Talent a couple years ago. They were started by a man who's son had gone missing, and he began the choir to give himself and other loved ones of missing people an outlet to some of the feelings they had about things. They did a similar format with the video montage behind them highlighting missing people...some of the cases highlighted were actually missing loved ones that had connections to people in the choir.
Back around 1992/1993, this video was credited with helping find several of the kids who were featured. Soul Asylum and MTV worked together and began updating/changing the faces of young people who had gone missing (sometimes for more than a decade before the song/video was released) across America. Not only are they great musicians, but they did a beautiful thing without solely seeking to advance their careers. God bless them for their selflessness and congratulations to them for a job well done!
Thank you for posting this. I didn't know about this. I've been looking for stories like this when musicians transcend music and do something bigger. I'm glad to know that it did help some people find their way home.
OMG I remember mentioning this song in your comments ages ago. It had such profound impact on the teenage me. I could not get it out of my head in the best way possible. Beautiful song with amazing video that still gets me teary. Not sure if people mentioned it already but there were several versions of the video with different kids and for different countries. Some were found, some were not, some tragically turned out to be victims of serial killers (in the UK version for sure and iirc the Australian one maybe?)... I remember there was an article about the fates of some of them a few years ago.
This song is fn special to me too. I think of it so much. Had 2 friends who disappeared around the time this video was out. Heartwrenching, but that's the power of music. No other medium can go straight to your soul like music.
I remember the end of the clip where they said or was it just text on the screen, that if you seen or know where any of these kids currently are to call some number, yeah very emotional song especially with the video clip.
@@continentalaquatics2725 yes the backpacker murders and another incident in the northern territory where british couple peter falconio and joanne lees were stopped by someone indicating something wrong with the car they were driving , i cant remember the killers name but we did end up catching him in sydney , he shot peter but joanne got away ,,,,, personally there was something not quite right how she got away , and it was a bit sus the way she acted after it happened , ive been in the area with the army and what she said happened dosnt marry up with the place it happened , dont get me wrong the killing happened i dont believe her story on how she got away
Another of my home State bands .... Minneapolis, Minnesota! This song had a huge impact when it came out. Sadly human trafficking is still a huge problem in this State 😢
The great thing about this video is that the band released different versions in different countries, with local missing kids for each one. And the other great thing is that some of the missing kids saw themselves in the video and reached out to their families.
When I saw the video in the 90s, I was always overwhelmed by the photos of those actually missing. Then there were real faces and real names. I cry again today.
A definitive 90's classic, this song struck me hard in my teenage year's and still does , kids today really do need to see this video they would get their eyes opened to the crazy world out there
I haven't listened to this song in a while because I cry every time. I feel this worlds pain too, and feel helpless to protect all I need/want to protect.
Thank you for being brave enough to make it thru this video the band wanted to bring awareness to the situations. Please check out the songs White Lighting by Def Leppard & Song And Emotion by Tesla both songs are bout the late great Steve Clark the guitarist of Def Leppard
Some of the folks whose photos are in this video are still missing in 2019. Byron Eric Page's story really hits me hard... A 17 year-old with his whole life ahead of him, already accepted into college, goes to catch a bus to a music store in 1992 and he's just...gone. And no one knows where he went or what happened to him.
GREAT video. I wanted to drop you a line to let you know they DID do a remake of this song...25 year anniversary and many different artists worked on it. The reason they did a remake was because they had astounding results finding the kids featured in the first vid! Thanks for reviewing this song. Yeah, it's hard to watch but it's worse to duck our heads in the sand.
This song and video are why I always look at the board at Walmart that has pictures of missing people. You never know if you might see them and could possibly help. This song resonates. Big time.
There was a tv program every week in Hungary called the "csellengok" that was dedicated for finding people with pictures like this on national tv. They played this video every time it started. I was around 10 back than but it still gives the same emotions 😥😥😥
Wow I have never heard this song before. It's very moving. Shit hot lyrics.. "I was a kid who could use a little turning", that hit me hard. I ran away to London from Ireland as a kid with a kid , I was 18 with a two yr old , and I should have turned to someone instead of believing I needed to cope by myself with everything. I still cant turn to others and I hurt my family a lot , only now at age 50 can I see how much we need each other as people to keep love alive in this evil world. Great song, profound and beautiful. Had me in tears along with you lad! 💚
I was in Jr High when this came out. The song and the video together will get you every time. And you can google what has or hasn't happened with some of the cases since then. Some have been located, some were deceased, some never have been located.... There was one girl who was located because her case was highlighted in the video...she actually wrote to the band and told them they ruined her life. Her home life had been abusive and she ran away from home and was living with her boyfriend, where she was actually safe. And once she was located, she was returned home, right back to the abuse she had left behind.
Seeing this ... Missed the 90's When MTV & VH1 played Music Videos ... 100% agree with the Issue of Missing Young Ladies of Color & No Media Coverage or Public Outrage ...
According to Kaye, 26 missing children were found after being featured in the video. In 2006, guitarist Dan Murphy stated in an interview with Pasadena Weekly that some of the cases featured in the video had ended in tragedy: "Some weren't the best scenarios. This being before social media just makes this song/video a masterpiece
makes my heart hurt so bad. i worry about my grand daughter having false security thinking people are harmless. i have started teaching her self defense .we need to teach kids this.
Every grandparent should be more like you, you want to believe the best In people, but unfortunately there are some sick twisted people out there and it only takes one wrong decision to change everything entirely, very glad you're teaching her self defense
This song touched me before video... I never saw video til years later... I was on a bus fleeing my home... it was horrible there but I also felt lost...like I had nowhere to go, nowhere to go back to, and no options. Though I loved they put missing children on this, I remember listening on a greyhound bus, with all the money I could scrape up to flee my family life... I knew there was no one to help now, and as the states passed, I got scared and thought, I'm in too deep there's no way back... this song meant a lot to me. As trivial as song was, it hit at a moment on a bus...running scared from abuse...
