Neil said he wrote this in a afternoon. Some people had come over to his and his wife's house to hang out and he was just in one of those moods where he wanted to be alone...so he left them in one room and went into another by himself....and this song flowed out of nowhere. He's so fantastic.

I remember the 80s pretty well my friend. It was my childhood but it was a reality. Things were different, calmer and more fun. The world seemed so relaxed and people weren't so displeased with everything. We actually didn't survive by keeping our phones in our pockets, we wrote letters and had pen pals. We walked miles to go see friends and stayed out till the sun went completely down. Neighbors got along in most neighborhoods and we even had occasional neighborhood parties. I think about the 80s often. I'm blessed I was a part of it.

A beautiful song, one of my all time favourites. Always loved that instrumental break, so concise and perfect. Crowded House were a great live band, and the inter- band banter and the wonderful rapport with their audience was always great fun. It was so sad when the original drummer, Paul Hester, committed suicide in 2005, he was always clowning about on stage, but it clearly masked a recurring depression. I wish he could have taken this song to his heart, and not let his demons win.

That song is fantastic! I agree 80s music is the best music that was ever made. It was honored to be a teenager growing up with that music. In the 80s they were so many bands from around the world that were on the charts in the United States. You just don't see that anymore.

I got to meet and hang out with these guys on tour. All three were kind , friendly , and sharing with the entire staff. They welcomed us backstage and shared craft services with the whole gang. Great memories thanks to these guys.

Neil and Tim Finn are kiwi brothers, and formed Crowded House after ending a fantastic decade or two with their NZ band, Split Enz.... we are so proud of them here in NZ!!! Neil wrote and performs this song...a classic!

Whilst the Finn brothers were originally from New Zealand, Crowded House started in my city of Melbourne, Australia, in the mid 80's. I still remember watching their farewell concert on tv on the steps of the Sydney Opera House. There were over 100,000 people there. It was a proud moment to be an Aussie. But when the drummer, Paul Hester, took his own life about 10 years later, it was a very sad day.

Totally agree!! The 80s music was the absolute best of all the decades! I'm 58 years old, so I remembef the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90, 2000s, etc. But the 80s were the best (both in music and in life & partys).

One of my favorite songs of all time. I may have been one of the ones who requested it. It came out when I graduated high school and that summer I went through that huge transformation of losing contact with so many people I grew up with. It was a hard time & this song was comforting. Thanks to social media change hasn’t lasted forever. I agree with u about 80’s music. I so love the 80’s.

Neil Finn, and his brother Tim Finn had a band before this that had tons of great songs, called Split Enz. They started as a quirky performance art type band, but with serious musical chops. They transitioned into new wave when Neil was old enough to start really contributing writing and took over most of the lead singing duties. Try " I Got You" and " Six Months in a Leaky Boat."

Hey James - one of the best songs of the 80's, totally agree with you. Neil Finn's former band, Split Enz, had some great songs too - feel free to check out "Dirty Creature", or "I Got You" Keep em coming, so much great music to find in the 80s.

I saw Crowded House at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 7, 1988. They performed "Better Be Home Soon" and they presented for Best New Artist In A Video. Guns N' Roses won for "Welcome To The Jungle." They walked right by me when they were going to the stage. I was so happy.

Neil Finn is, in my opinion, the greatest lyricists ever in our modern age. I'm mainly a metal guy, but Crowded House songs transport me immediately to me and my Dad crooning away in the car going here and there. I saw their (1st) Farewell to the World concert at the Opera House and it was utterly amazing. For those of you interested, it's on youtube - search for 'crowded house farewell to the world'. They played this song as the closer, and it absolutely brought the house down.

I am a child of the 80s and I have to agree! SO much good music in ALL genres - pop, r&b, rock, country, soul - everything. And it was pre-Internet, which was also AMAZING. People actually talked to each other and weren't taking 10,000 pictures of themselves. Try "Luka" by Suzanne Vega from 1987.

This is my all time favorite song. My music is wide spread and I have more 80's lyrics in my memory than useful knowledge. I believe this song is timeless. I don't have the words to explain how this song affects me. ♥️ you!

You made me cry like a baby with this one. I remember the day I heard that Paul Hester, the drummer from Crowded House had lost his battle with depression the previous night. We lost a great musician and a true gentleman that night :(
