"Move aside, and let the man go through. Let the man go through". A very appropriate song when Reacher, all 6'5, 250 lbs of muscle is walking towards you! Thank you to whoever is on the show for introducing this gem. (1/12/24)
Fan or not of the series Reacher, they do pass unbelievable tracks such as this one which put the artists back on the map for those who forgot, and open some new hears to major music from years past
In 1996-97 I was a skinny blonde guy with buzzed hair and wire-rimmed glasses working graveyard shift at a convenience store in Austin. The night Soul Coughing played downtown, college-age people kept coming into my store and stopping dead in their tracks to stare at me. This happened several times before one couple got up the courage to ask, "What the hell are you doing here??" I quirked my head in confusion and said, "I work here." They looked shocked. "You played a concert and then came to work here," the guy asked in disbelief. Turns out I looked so much like Mike Doughty, at least from a distance, that people really thought the lead singer of Soul Coughing was working graveyard shift at a Stop-N-Go right after finishing a concert. "THANK YOU AUSTIN, WE LOVE YOU BUT I HAVE TO STOCK THE BEER COOLER"
Being a fan of this style of music I’m surprised I missed this one. Thanks Reacher for introducing me to this. Now on my playlist and thoroughly enjoying it.
I've been waiting for somebody to mention grant torismo 2. This song was banging 20 years ago. When I saw them play it on Reacher I went straight to the video..super cool song..CLASSIC
This may be the most fitting song for a scene in TV history. 99.9% of the population would stand aside and let Reacher through. Had to look this song up to hear the rest, definitely not disappointed.
Came here because of Reacher. I can see I'm far from the only one. This is a funky song and now I'm gonna see where I can buy it. The 90s is my era yet I somehow missed this band.
I used to work at an animal rescue and occasionally we’d get a bunny. Every time I would take a bunny out to clean his cage and he’d hop around the room, I’d always have this song playing in my head with the lyrics as “super bun bun” instead of “bon bon” 🐰
i'm also a wildlife rehabber, well i was an apprentice to one, and we sacrificed a lotta things for that position we'd put ourselves into, and i miss those days.. there was always somethin' doin'...i wonder what old-what's-her-name's doin' today, probly takin' care of too many exotic, 'rescued' birds from south america and africa, who didn't much like me anyways, those ingrates~
Same. Had just graduated and had my oldest son, totally in my Toadies, 311, Tool, Primus, and ICP phase when this came out. I heard it on Reacher and was immediately transported back.
That's a serious bass line. Glad I caught this on Reacher. It was the perfect song for the end of that episode. You know the next episode, everything bout to go down.
Such a cool song. Was on my husbands playlist back then, pre-kids, when we were young and not the old tired people we are now. Nice to reminisce. These guys were awesome. Gen-X for the win baby.
You ever listen to Mike Doughtys (lead singer) solo stuff? Haughty Melodic, Sad man/ Happy Man, Golden Delicious, Rickitty Rock.... just to name a few. It is truly timeless music
A long time ago, when Doughty was in Italy, he spotted a candy bar called a Super Bon Bon. He liked the name and the way it sounded, so he just used it in this, one of the coolest, though most meaningless, songs of the time. Most of his lyrics were written in a train-of-thought style that many of them are more about the rhythm and beat of the syllables as they match up with the music more than they are about specific meaning, literal or otherwise. Fucking love this band!
He was a street musician, busking in front of The Knitting Factory when the other guys in the band, who were all avante garde musicians there, "discovered" him & they teamed up to form the band. The other lyrics to this song aren't just stream of consciousness nonsense, but they have to do with the stuff he'd hear from the bouncers at the hi falutin' clubs he'd busk outside of. "Move Outside, & Let The Man Go Through" = whenever a VIP pulled up in a limo, the bouncers would order the crowd to make way for the VIP to get right into the club. "You Gotta Take the Elevator to the Mezzanine" = the bouncers telling the patrons in line where to go when they went into the clubs. They explained all this when they played live in the studio on The Howard Stern Show back in the day. Wish that session was on You Tube.
Thanks for that info! Great post. I was wondering about what this song meant. There is an interview with John Lennon talking to a dude who meanders to where he was living, and the dude was enamored with the meaning of certain lyrics, and John Lennon said something like: Don't read into the lyrics, they means whatever you want them to mean, which is not necessarily what I meant them to mean, if anything at all. We just make music as it happens to come out." The dude was a bit lost at the time lol. Maybe someone can find that clip.
Thanks to Reacher I've had this song wedged in my brain for a solid week... Had this song on Music in the Key of X back in the 90's, probably haven't thought about this song in 10 years though.
I just turned 54, and I still listen to the loudest metal I can find. My grandsons love it, and it helps that my daughter always had loud music playing while she was pregnant.
I’m 51 had a roommate back in late 90’s who played soul coughing everyday all day…I started to cringe hearing it like dude broaden your horizons…they sound good again it’s been awhile
This will always be what I consider the perfect formula for band, as far as instrumentation is concerned. Poet, Upright Bass Genius, Superhuman Drummer, Pure Imagination Running Samples
When this song came out in the late 90s. It was so bad ass. We were on a ski trip in Breckenridge Colorado. I had this song on a CD mix I had. We were in Breckenridge brewery on a Saturday night, place was packed. My friend knew the manager, and he let us slide the disc in for a couple of songs. Everybody in the bar freaked out. That song was way ahead of his time.
The following tag team contest is scheduled for one fall, making their way to the ring, accompanied by Miss Congeniality, weighing in at a combined weight 564lbs, they the reigning ECW Tag Team Champions....Danny Doring and Roadkill! That's for all of you old school ECW Wrestling fans :)
Seen them live in '98 with Hole, Garbage, Cake, and Marcy Playground in Seattle at the Deck the Hall Ball. It was my 21st birthday present from some friends Great show. Fun times. Soul Coughing is still one of my favorite bands. 🤘
I have memories of this from playing Gran Turismo 2 as a kid. Then I heard it today again while bingewatching The Blacklist (awesome series btw, Super Bon Bon was featured in Season 6 Episode 2).
@civilmetimbers5636 ❤Same here. Reminiscing about 90s fashion, and music brought me here. I remember the baggy jeans , the Jncos lol, and the Adidas shell tops, belly button piercings, and songs like this. I think I was about 19 when this came out . Now all the 90s style clothes are back in style. It kinda reminds me of the early Brit Pop fashion.
He was at a hotel in Italy. He had the munchies from smoking weed. There was a vending machine on the mezzanine level. "Chump change and it's on" means all he needed was few coins to buy a candy bar. There was one called "Super Bon Bon". He liked it so much that it became the pet name for his girlfriend at the time. I think I've got the story pretty close.
I remember them guesting on the Howard Stern show back then & explaining the other lyrics "move outside & let the man go thru" & "you gotta take the elevator to the mezzanine" were about the NYC club scene - when a VIP shows up, all the regular folks waiting in line behind the velvet rope are told by the bouncers to "move outside & let the man go thru", also, the VIP section is usually in the balcony/mezzanine, thus, the bouncer would say to the VIP as he went in "you gotta take the elevator to the mezzanine". Stern loved it as he was a VIP & had experienced all this firsthand many times. My ex wife & I were in our early 30's back then & used to occasionally dress up & trip down to NYC for a night on the town (usually The Limelight) & we'd experienced this kind of thing too.
That's so weird, I had a girl named Bonnie, & I called her my "super bon bon". She had never heard the song, & my enthusiastic singing didn't quite hit the same, but she liked it anyway lol. How funny, we did the same thing with our ladies.
I hate to admit how old I am but the 60's and 70's were far more cutting edge. Nearly everything was new and untested. BTW, I'm not knocking the 90's, loved those years too.
The thing about 90s music is that it never sounds "old".. songs still sound like they were made just yesterday... Can definitely not say the same for the 60s and 70s era.
I remember this song and music video from when it was first released on MTV but throughout the years I could never figure out who it was until now!! This is the first time watching this in probably over 25 years 🤣
Thank you Reacher for resurrecting and spreading this - what memories ❤ I remember him back in the day, Doughty & Soul Coughing and I thought RU-vid music just knew that didn't know who is Reacher, but will you look you up!! 🎉
The first time I heard this song was years ago on "Homicide Life on the Street" episode "Strangers and Other Partners". It was definitely a badass scene. Sometime later I remember hearing Soul Soughing's " Rolling" and "Circles" on Cartoon Network. Memories Are So Sweet
@Menacing Toilet Aura haha. Appreciate that. When I first heard it way back when . I went to my local music shop and got it as a cd single. It was set in that genre. I could well be mistaken. But it seemed to fit.
Heard this new in ‘96 at 16, still just as heavy and frenetic then, as it now. Nice seeing so many people discovering it for the first time. Lots of music like this from the 90s!
Thank you for posting this, I had completely totes forgotten about it, and 20 some odd years later, I find myself singing along with it like I just heard it yesterday
This is quite possibly the best song i've heard about making way for a juicy stone fruit produced from numerous species of tropical trees belonging to the flowering plant genus Mangifera. "Let the Mango through" baby!!
Did Reacher bring you here in 2024? I listen to a lot of similar 90s music but am surprised I've never heard this song. The song is well used in Reacher Season 2 episode 7.
