I am 64 yrs old, saw The Beatles live on Ed Sullivan, saw The Doors in 1967, lived thru the 70's, Zeppelin, and 80's new wave, etc. Without a doubt the mid 90's from 1994 to about 2001 or 2002 was the single greatest 7-8 year period of music EVER. Don't ask me why, maybe it's a personal thing, maybe it's the alt rock movement in full swing by then, but I know other ppl feel the same way too....I'm not alone. This song by The Eels was in late 1996 when a ton of great alt rock was happening.
I like New Wave, Retrowave, and everything in-between, and was a teenager in the era of this type of music (19 in 1996), and this particular song has always spoke to me, especially how dark things became for me in the late 1990s (less dark these days; I'm practically the welcome wagon at times😁).
You are correct indeed, young folks seem to think they know it all because they listen Miley and Justin.... haven't a clue on what they missed out on, sad in many ways
G damn, Bran Stark - if I wasn't looking at your name and "1 year ago", I'd have sworn that I typed that comment. I had a feeling this might be the case going into this song - that nostalgia might make a sharp, last minute u-turn into melancholy, but I went in anyway.
It makes me feel like my entire body is made of honey, and that honey is just spreading blissfully into the world around me, turning everything into the physical manifestitation of the feeling you get/got when your true love first crawled into a warm bed with you under the covers, and softly put their arms around you, making you feel in equal parts warmer and cooler at the same time as they held you and you felt their legs entertwine with yours..... Sorry guys, I articulate things oddly, but that's what I feel when I hear this song. lol
This was the first mp3 I've ever downloaded from that newfangled "Internet" thing. It was 1996 or 1997 i believe. It was at a friends' place, since I didn't have internet connection back then (that afternoon was actually the first time I've ever seen it), and wouldn't have it for another 2 years. He told me he could find me any song I want, and I asked this one since I loved it at the time. I believe we downloaded that extremely low-quality mp3 for at least 45 mins, and then he gave it to me on a floppy disk. Happy days.
@Ryan Jude Bernardo: Most of us in UK didn't have home access to the net till after 2000. Middle class snobs & upper class ponces may have had it earlier but I'm talking about the working class, the crux of society.
@@Dani92670 no if ur going to believe the bible and u know history or u don't have to know ur history. just do a search on the seige of jerusalem in 70AD and u will find that the prophecy the bible jesus of luke 21:20 that when jerusalem is surrounded by armies then know that destruction is nigh. this prophecy was fulfilled in 70AD when titus and his armies did more than surround jerusalem they all but leveled it to the ground. that would mean a 20 year old person witnessing the bibles account of the crucifixion would only of been approx. 57 years old. and also making matt 24:34 'truly this generation SHALL NOT pass till all these things be fulfilled.' and the jesus also said, matt 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom..... that would of been those christians of the bible who were behind the walls seeing prophecy happening right before their eyes. but is it any wonder the WORLD controllers don't wish for this to be known. person it is 2020. time for our VISION to also be 20/20 and see with our eyes. hey but i get it, to each there own.
Every time I think I've heard just about every good song from the 90's, I end up finding a gem like this and my mind is blown. Good God, I wish music today sounded this good!
Paris, 2019... First time in a French supermarket, Novocaine For The Soul (unedited) blasting on the overhead speakers is one of the most surreal musical moments I've had. It was then I finally appreciated the beauty of this track.
Damn right. So much variety. Sometimes it seems like metalheads and Nirvana fans think the mid-‘90s/early-‘00s was a low point for music. Maybe for them it was, but not for the rest of us.
The singer, Marc Everett is the son of physicist Hugh Everett who worked out the multiple universe theory. The idea that all possibilities are played out in other realities to infinity in either direction good or evil.
Yeah, that's truly awesome. Another awesome rock stars from the 90s - Kim and Kelley deal are daughters of another physicist - Robert Edward Deal who was one of the inventors of the nuclear weapon (really!).
I forgot all about this song. I graduated in 1997 and remember the radio playing this song around that time. Time keeps moving forward. I know have not heard this song since then. Am so thankful for finding these songs that I have not heard in years.I want to go back to the 90’s. Better times.
@@princesscat1232 honestly there's so many other great bands that don't have any songs over 1 million views its definitely well appreciated, I hear the song multiple times a week on the local alternative station and it's very well rated on music websites its definitely adequately appreciated
Life is hard And so am I You'd better give me something So I don't die Novocaine for the soul Before I sputter out Before I sputter out Life is white And I am black Jesus and his lawyer Are coming back Oh my darling Will you be here Before I sputter out Before I sputter out Before I sputter out Guess who's living here with the great undead This paint by numbers life is fucking with my head, once again Life is good And I feel great 'Cause mother says I was A great mistake Novocaine for the soul You'd better give me something to fill the hole Before I sputter out Before I sputter out Before I sputter out Before I sputter out
I've always loved this song, since I was a kid. It's amazing and emotional, it never gets old. The music is perfect. The violin is a bonus. The lyrics are great too.
'93-'96 - Great time for alt-rock. I had moved out to L.A., and it was a wonderful life soundtrack. Just one great song after another. Many had catchy simplified intros, like Novocaine, where everything kicks in - for example: Gel (Collective Soul), Meantime (Spacehog) or Cannonball (Breeders). The broken down beginnings were the best. :D
I'm a Gen X-er that JUST discovered this song last year. Ya..... I don't know how the hell I missed it, but this in one of the BEST f**king songs of the 90's I've ever heard. And I missed it.
1996= The Best MTV music videos= EELS, Alanis Morissette, Silver Chair, Björk, No Doubt, Oasis, Blur, Cypress Hill, Beastie Boys, Marylin Manson, Beck, etc, etc
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s was amazing. Now I get to repeat it with my kids because everything from my youth is back again. John Hughes was responsible for some of the greatest COVID bonding moments for my family. Not to mention Green Day, Blink 182 etc. ♥️
My dad was born in 59, I was born in 86 . We traversed all the tunes from all the eras. He took me to see The Prodigy at Reading Rock Festival in 98. Beatles , doors , stones , glam rock, heavy rock. Oasis pulp blur . Top
I was in 1st year of medicine school, when I discovered eels. Winter, small apartment, endlessly reading the same pages to memorize. Then the pause: eating some soup while listening to this (or Susan's house) many many times in a row. Now 15 years later, i'm a doctor, i moved in Amsterdam last month. Life is good 🖤
I'm 15 and my mum and dad listened to the eels in the car when I was around 9. This was my favourite song then. I listened to it again a few days ago and I didn't realize it was about that at all when I was younger lol. The eels are amazing I love I like birds :)
I just wanted to say I love this band now that I heard it. I'm so Glad and proud that I'm a 90s baby. I only got to live 2 years of it but I grew up on a lot of 90s movies and music in that time period so I really do appreciate the people who impacted my life :) thank you.
just finished his autobiography "Things That Grandchildren Should Know". Great read! I basically became an Eels fan overnight :) I actually vaguely remember watching this music video when I was a kid (6-7 years old)
a brilliant track , a personal favourite, the time it was released and the music scene at the time were miles ahead of today ...shame stuff like this isnt more well know
I remember when i watch this music video back in 1997, i was mesmerized by the concept. Mark Romanek is a genius and loved the song as well very much. 😃😃
Is it being young you miss? - I miss being slimmer & looking younger, going to Alt/Rock clubs & Pubs having pinball but everything else about the '90s was as Meh as any decade, then tory Blair made it harder for teens to get in Pubs & gigs - what else are they supposed to do?! Tf I grew up late '80s when you could get in Pubs as long as you behaved, fk that usa style ID shite - least we have youtube now..
I just finished your book, this song changed after reading it.... unbelievable! It already was great but after reading the backstory, it just got so much better! Love your work E! You’re awesome!
Still such a Great song! I remember when i worked in a NYC Comic Shop, we could play our own music. One saturday a co-worker had this song in a mix cd. An hour later the song is still playing. It had skipped so perfectly at one point in the song near the end where it would replay the song over and over. We left it on haha
Came searching for this video because I'm feeling old and this awesome song was an anthem of my childhood. They actually played this on MTV... Different world altogether.
I was on a listening phase for this song back in 2017 and when I listened to it I couldn't help but uncontrollably cry but these days I can listen to it fine. Also I found this song from a south american movie about a guy who has a son but can't cope with fatherhood but I can't remember the name of that movie.
Was 14 years old when this song played on the radio. One Saturday, I remember waiting for what seemed like HOURS to get through the radio commercials and other songs, JUST TO HEAR THE INTRO AND PRESS RECORD. Lol. Take me back!!!
Thank you Nicole Alvarez and KROQ for introducing this gem to me today. I was a teen when this song came out! I can’t believe I’m only hearing this for the first time today.

1996 in my opinion, was The best year of the 1990s, i'm latín and recives good music from everywere! México, England, Iceland, Argentina, Guatemala, U.s, Brasil, Germany, Spain, Japan, Canada, Colombia, my country and etc. Well many countries, and I speak specifically of rock and pop.
I only learned this a few years ago, that he's the son of the inventor of the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics. Very cool! I highly recommend the article "The Many Worlds of Hugh Everett " in Scientific American.
