I remember always laughing at that Shinigami Chop every time he uses it on soul eater, then when he used it on Asura I realized how powerful and serious that attack is.
"Hello, it's been a while. Are you ok, you look thin" This line made a whole of sense when it was later revealed that Asura is in fact Lord Death's son.
@@LokiToxtrocity Damn, now I need to find time in my day to read the manga to find this in an orderly sense and make it official. Thank you for educating me. But also Fuck you for unintentionally giving me homework. I'ma give you the updoot, but hate it because I am now forcing my self to do more work than I intended just so I can have the momentary satisfaction of witnessing when this Lore Fact happened.... I have now, in a sense, F**kFaced myself with your help... You're a great help, thank you for the info, but now I hate myself more for feeling like I need to invest the time to view this event that I could easily just take your word at and be done with it, but instead I feel I need to witness it myself when I could easily just say, "Ok" and move on with my life, but instead, because of your words, I now need to do more work to find this in context, and the reason for the obsession is no one's fault but my own, but now I NEED to do this.... This is an insane comment, I realize that... but part of me needed to say it. Thank you for mentioning it was manga, now I have a focal point for research, but the next week of my life will be dedicated to finding this fact in the manga with proper context....
Yeah I always wanted to know what drove him to hate his first son so much (besides the evil part) when hes so mellow toward everyone else even his enemies half the time 🤔
+Lionel SELGI Same here. Why on earth did they not release this soundtrack? It is beautiful. Do you know if there are any other places in the anime where it plays?
It's a real shame the series wasn't longer, I'd of loved it if Shinigami and Asura had another confrontation after it was revealed they were Father and Son.
I was 18 when this anime was airing. I remember watching this scene for the first time, having already watched things like DBZ, the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime, InuYasha, the usual set. There had been so many awesome scenes in those shows, but many of them had grand buildups. Something about the sudden seriousness and intensity in Death’s Shinigami Chop here gave me goosebumps. Literal goosebumps. I had never experienced such a thing with any show before; I distinctly remember where I was when I watched this for the first time, looking down at my arms, seeing the raised hairs, and feeling the sheer, raw power delivered in that chop. I was already hooked by this point, but Soul Eater became S-tier for me after that experience.
"Sorry to do this to you after just waking up... You're going to die again" IMO one of the best lines in anime, next to "oh this? It is because... I am Kira"
Spoilers ahead for both manga endings of Fire Force and Soul Eater. The MOMENT Haumea looked back and asked herself where the Despair went, I knew what was coming up. And when the three eyes were looking back at her from the darkness of the curtain, I actually got goosebumps. Asura is the final remnant of the World of Flames, something that even Shinra could not entirely erase, only put to sleep. The one thing he could not fix. Basically, his first sin, if you want to stay with the religious implications that Fire Force is giving. Its only fitting that even Death cannot fully erase Despair. After all, as Haumea stated, Despair was basically created from the fear of Death, and though Death is weakened, and from that, Despair as well, it cant die unless Death doesnt exist as well. And probably not even then. Then we get to the manga end of Soul Eater where Chrona basically locks Asura with him, Brew and the Book of Eibon for an indefinite amount of time. Chrona, having become the Great Old One of Dissonance, basically does not allow Asura to function properly anymore, disassociating him with himself and hijacking his madness to broadcast his own, true madness. This would be fine, because the world basically is now free of despair and fear, but if you had the same feeling as me, something felt off. This is probably because we now only have three (or five, depending on how you count) Great Old Ones. Kid, the Old One of Balance, Black Star, the Old one of War, Excalibur, the Old One of Rage, and Maka and Soul, which are both one half of the Old One of Resonance (Although you could argue that they aren't an Old One, and just able to reach their level because of their resonance). Together, they were able to unleash the perfect battle against Asura, but there will come a point when there are just Excalibur, Kid and Black Star left, and Chronas containment will fail. What then?
That was awesome to say at least. It's literally a fight between gods and you haven't seen anything of the two that were fighting (Ashura just appeared and Shinigami was more like a comedian), then there was the buildup with the backstory of these two and the epic soundtrack. One of my favourite Anime fights.
Possibly the reason that the background music for this fight hasn't been released is that it is in fact a Buddhist chant and not an original composition
This first half of Soul Eater was such a good anime season. One of the best, although it's hard to say since the media is so broad. Just from what I have watched this is one of the best, Soul Eater has such enjoyable characters.
Studio Bones really makes a fight shine when they add little details like in 1:35 Asura's slow ascend and even how the bandages are dragged in the ground really sell how creepy he is. I don't normally see that in an anime adaptation. At best, they'll recreate the manga panel but lacks the oomph to really hit that greatness. The techniques and battle choreography are always the focus but not enough subtle character body movements that makes you remember the character, not just what attack they can dish out.
MrWildcard531 I will not lie because I am not ashamed. That is definitely the reason I came here. I remember how Death's voice changed during this moment but I couldn't find it anywhere else. I just thought this moment was really freaking cool!
I love it so much when the strongest characters in the series that literally decide everything in the world with their existence reminisce and talk when they meet after a long time instead of going immediatly into battle or being over-aggressive to each other I always feel a great wisdom from them
Lol, aww, poor Death. The kids used to be scared of him! XD Although I don't know, somehow I expected him to be scarier looking before he altered himself to be more child-friendly, he really wasn't THAT frightening.
I forgot how terrrifying this was. It really helped me relate to the students because I felt the exact same way about this situation: terrified and dumbfounded.
Ah man, I've never heard Asura's laugh by the japanese VA before, cause I've only seen the dub. How delightfully perfect. Is it just me or is the chanting different too?
After all these years it finally hit me. Isn't it weird how these guys that have been sealed away for thousands of years don't lose their strength? Ashuras a perfect example. He's still as strong as he was the day he was sealed away.
There is also the idea that most of the time the seal beings power is not tied to physical strength, but magic or something else. Here it is the power of their souls
He was actually much weaker. The only reason he survived this battle was due to the black blood allowing him to endure the blows he took. We learn later on that his strength is on par with Death Sr, and that Death himself doubts he'd be able to win without a death scythe. So yeah, at most he's at half strength, which is why his ass is getting beat and why he ran away
As someone watching Soul Eater for the very first time, that sudden voice change hit me like a brick directly to the face LMFAO (Death also went from "well he's a neat character!" to "OH HE'S A FAVORITE" in 0.02 milliseconds haha)
After this, and even more so after their rematch in the anime where Shinigami-Sama had his strongest Death Scythe with him and still lost, I have no doubt in my mind that Asura was able to surpass his father.
Bro did you not even pay attention to the episode? Asura literally attacked Death the Kid and Asuza because he knew he couldn’t kill Death in a fair fight.😑 STFU
Sometimes I wish we got remastered version of this great anime and battle scene.... I imagine if Ufotable do the animation and Yuki Kajiura do the epic battle music...
Nah bones did it right its just on the second half it fell off since theyve caught up in the manga this sht was back in 2008 and did age well in terms of animation (they also did fma brotherhood so idk y they wont make a remake of this)
After watching a clip from Inuyasha and remembering Soul Eater, I got curious, and TIL that the weapon Asura eats (Vajra?), is of the weapon class Tokko, which the limited amount of information I could find claimed it was a weapon used by Feudal Japanese Monks to protect themselves as they traveled. So the ultimate evil/ Madness incarnate bad guy of this anime used the weapon of a holy man. Seems fitting.
Asura was a world ending threat that was at least relative to Lord Death in power at this point. That's like saying in Records of Ragnarok Adam shouldve beat Zeus because Adam has power from God/created in his image (presumably the one from Christianity and likely the highest deity yet to be introduced) these characters are capable of fairing well against seemingly unstoppable forces (in their verses) because they were given power by Gods but that doesnt mean they outright scale to their creator. Likely were given something like 0.00001% of their power and they still are top tier in their verses. What kind of God gives its creation identical power to their own that's asking to be overthrown.
@@deeeeeeznutz he created the universe and death to be a balance force kind of like The One Above All's dynamic with The Living Tribunal in Marvel, it was never stated he gave him all his power because then he'd be borderline unstoppable, just mere drops of power into the puppet figure that became Lord Death.
it's so frustrating when a show makes such an amazing fight scene like this, then none of the music can be found in the OST / anywhere. 3:30 is so good, and 5:30 is so goood too.. I've literally been waiting since the release of the episode to get a mp3 of the tracks, and they never were released in any of the OSTs (from what I know)
I saw a text conversation screenshot saying some kids invited them to a water fight, so they replied that they are getting ready by boiling the water... So i decided to youtube search boiled water fight, but instead of water i typed eater. So... I found this and love it. Gotta watch more now
After the explosion hit the ground at 2:40, I saw an eyeball staring back at me through the crater. It honestly took me a second to realize it was my own eye reflected off my phone. Just one of this things... 👁️😆
