A true musician never dies, he just stops performing live. Manu Dibango, the Lion of Africa.
I am at peace, my soul at rest
There are no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years.
December 12, 1933 - March 24, 2020
With deep sadness and this world's loss, Manu Dibango (the Lion of Africa), has made his transition into the Light at 86 years of age to covid 19, in a hospital near Paris, according to his Facebook post. RIP Manu and thank you for the gift of your music.

SONG FACTS: A native of Cameroon, Manu Dibango has enjoyed a long career as a musician and songwriter, developing a fusion of Jazz and African musical styles. This song which was released in 1972, came early in Dibango's career, and was introduced to American listeners by the legendary New York City radio DJ Frankie Crocker on FM's WBLS radio station.
This song made the US Top 40 only briefly, but later became notable for 3 reasons. The first is its refrain, "Ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-kossa," which Michael Jackson borrowed for his 1983 hit "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," but without Dibango's permission. Dibango eventually reached an out-of-court settlement with Jackson over the lyrics. Dibango also had filed a lawsuit against Rihanna. When Rihanna came calling in 2007, asking to sample Jackson on her song "Don't Stop the Music," Jackson agreed - allegedly without contacting DiBango. www.theguardian.com/music/200.... The third reason is the genré, and the pop culture phenomenon, that the song set in motion.
"Soul Makossa" was so popular as a dance song that its style began to be emulated and further developed by American dance musicians - and eventually took on a life of its own. As a result, this is now widely regarded as the first Disco record. Whenever it was dropped on Dance floors in New York it lead to "dance battles." Blacks, Italians, Latino's and Whites couldn't get enough of this groove and strutted their stuff when this monster tune came on.

Rich people are poor; We only got money on our mind or bank•account. Soulfood is Richness & universal joyfull language from above & beyond. That is Music in my ear. That is in fact a huge part of why life is worth Living. Soul addiction is astonishing healthy. Addiction to money is a disease from invention of capitalistic society. "Soul Makossa" was a 1972 song sung by the talented African artist Manu Dibango. It was a jazz fusion and funk oriented song which became very popular in many countries all over the world. I was a little boy when I first heard it being played here on the local MW radio channel in the 70's, and I liked this song very much ever since. I am living in South Asia. This was one of the dance tunes which is quite unforgettable. It is a known fact that Michael Jackson got inspiration from this song to create his song "Wanna be Startin' Something". It is sad to know that Mr. Manu Dibango passed away in 2020. Thank you for uploading this song! But I like to mention here that there's a doubt whether everybody will like this video accompanying this song.

Manu Dibango used to say that Michael Jackson had not been fair enough with him, as this was plagerized by the latter in the first song "Wanna be starting Somethin", the opening tube of his magnum album "Thriller", released in 1982, and which is still to date the world most sold album...Manu released his "Soul Makossa" in 1972, as the hymn to the African Cup of Nation, a football event that Cameroon, his country, was hosting in 1972...so this song as just strike 50 years...had Manu its author not passed away last year due to Covid, he would certainly had celebrated it at the opening of the last African Cup...help in January in Cameroon! In brand new stadium, just as in 1972 Cameroon had just got its first stadium!

I remember when this song debut on WJIZ in Albany Georgia in 1973 I think. I was just 13 years old then, but remember how I couldn't help but moving to the beat. Truly one of the most inspiring songs in my life. I somehow could feel the African in me " if that makes sense". And at 61 years old I still can't help but dance when I hear this song. Thanks for posting. RIP Manu 🙏.

OMG !!! I absolutely Love this song. I was a 14 when I first heard it on the radio Mom had in the kitchen. Mom loved to dance and whenever this song came on the radio she'd STOP whatever she was doing and start dancing, and I would join her. DJ's in those days would say the name of the song and the Artist, so on Fridays Dad gat paid and gave me my allowance of $1.00 I ran to the record store eight blocks aways and purchased the 45 it was only .25 cents. Yes, this was almost 50 years ago. I'm now 64 still have that 45 in excellent conditions.... I collect records and have a record library in my home. Music has always been my passion but, it was SOUL MAKOSSA By Manu Dibango that put me on this Path. SOUL MAKOSSA was my Inspiration. And when I turned 31 my husband and I went to visit Beautiful Africa Vacation. I love this country.
