I am a lifelong Judas Priest fan. And in my opinion, Judas Priest didn’t invent heavy metal, but they definitely perfected it. I have seen them many times in concert, but in the 1980s they were untouchable. Especially the Defenders Of The Faith tour in 1984. It is one of my top 10 concerts that I have seen. And as usual, they were loud as hell! I always loved hearing the Harley Davidson fire up backstage, and Rob would ride out and the band would kick into Hell Bent for Leather. The stuff from the 70’s has always been my favorite. Have a listen to some of that Melisa. Exciter, Sinner and Victim Of Changes.
People are right to recommend Victim of Changes but so glad to see love for Sinner too, such a banger. And the 70s era gave us Dissident Aggressor too, which was so ahead of its time.
Sorry but Priest, with Sabbath, ABSOLUTELY invented Heavy Metal. They inspired a whole generation of bands, including Iron Maiden who have stated CATEGORICALLY that NWOBHM came entirely from Priest's influence and example.
Defenders of the Faith were the exact album that made me fall in love with them. I saw Freewheel Burning video on MTV late one night and I was HOOKED forever.
I prefer "Victim of Changes" live Vengeance '82 performance. The US Festival performance seems rushed & was cut short compared to every other performance recorded.

If you want the ultimate representation of Judas Priest then you have to have a listen to "Victim of Changes", and if you want to see how Rob's voice has "Matured", there's an awesome version from around 2009 Live at the Seminal Hard Rock Arena. Great song! Great song!!! But... everyone and their Grandma has reacted to it, that and Painkiller. Dig a little deeper into the Priest library. One of my first suggestions to any JP novice would be the song that shows who Priest is. and that would be Metal Gods. Others would be Hell Bent for Leather, The Sentinel and Love Bites. One that flies under the radar from the Ram It Down album that really shows Rob's chops would be Under Blood Red Skies.
Agreed that Victim of Changes is an absolute must listen! Especially as a singer yourself, I’m positive it’s going to blow you away! This is Halford on FULL POWER BLAST! This is one of the songs that earned him the nickname The Metal God and why JUDAS PREIST is considered THE Standard for Heavy Metal, hands down. It’s extremely impressive. You have pick the right version though. To play it safe for a first listen, I would suggest you stick with studio version. You can’t go wrong there. That’s how all of us first heard it. It’s a Real Classic for a damn good reason. It really showcases what Rob is capable of. It absolutely crushes live in concert.
I remember seeing them in Gothenburg in 1990 with Pantera and Annihilator supporting, "Beyond the Realms of Death" with star-patterns projected around the arena was an other-worldly experience. For the next Priest reaction I would suggest something that shows the epic, more ballad-y side, like the aforementioned "Beyond..." or "Blood Red Skies", "Out in the Cold", "Before the Dawn", "Here Come the Tears", "Dreamer Deceiver" or one of my favorites that's a real deep cut from their first album from '74, "Run of the Mill". A great but I think overlooked song/s is Dreamer Deceiver & Deceiver, they go together to make a great power ballad which perfectly demonstrates Halford's lows and highs

These two songs are incredibly representative of Judas Priest. They’re some of their best songs. I’m always disappointed when someone’s first exposure to them is Painkiller. Painkiller is a great song, but it really doesn’t showcase Rob very well at all. Everyone should hear it, but I don’t think it should be the first thing they hear. There are way more songs that showcase Rob’s immense talent in much better ways than Painkiller does. Painkiller should be one of those songs you hear when you’re already familiar with them. If you haven’t already, check out the studio version of Screaming For Vengeance sometime, just for yourself so you can really hear him. It is among my favourite songs of theirs. I’ve been listening to them since 1982 when that album first came out, when I was just 11 years old. They’ve been one of my favourite bands ever since. Every time they toured, for various reasons, I never made it out to see them back in the day. It wasn’t until 2010 that everything finally lined up for me to finally catch them live. It was beyond amazing. But they didn’t do Screaming For Vengeance that night. I was hoping they would, but they have so many songs that only so many can fit into a night’s performance, and unfortunately that wasn’t one of them that night. I think I have seen them four times now, and they did play that song on at least two of those other three tours that I caught. This video you watched doesn’t do his scream in that song justice at all. It is insane to hear live. Hearing him sing all the various songs live is incredible. Go out of your way to go to the next show near you before it is too late. You won’t be sorry.
Agreed. I actually am not a fan of the Painkiller song myself as it starts at 1000 % intensity and stays there the whole song. Not a good display of Rob's range. On a similar note, the song Fast as a Shark by Accept is a total banger, but I rarely see it reacted to.
If you do listen to these songs on the album... do yourself a favor and listen to "Screaming For Vengeance" and "You've Got Another Thing Comin' " linked together in one 9 minute 53 second song just so that you can hear it just as it was on the original album/cassette. I truly believe that "Screaming For Vengeance" is the spiritual intro to "You've Got Another Thing Comin' "... I just do... and If you're a millennial and haven't ever heard them together as they were mixed on the original pressing you haven't really heard them before !
The live version of Victim of Changes and The Sentinel will make you feel glad to be a woman. I didn't see this concert, but I saw the previous tour second row center in Hawaii ('83 I believe -Screaming For Vengeance tour. I think this concert was Defenders Of The Faith). Still have the pics. Caught one of the flower leis he had handing on his Harley. Guess I got lei'd by The Metal God. By the way, he recently had a birthday which I wished him happy birthday on FB and he liked my comment. Hate to sound like a teeny bopper, but it made me warm and fuzzy.
Yes, "The Sentinel"... That's the track to review. I would recommend the studio version. The mixing on the live recordings are a bit rough and it loses a lot of the nuance in his voice. You get the wails in the live recording, but the harsh cuts at the end of some of the syllables and the hissing noises sound distorted in the live versions. The mics in the 80s just didn't pick that up well, and recording live shows in stereo doesn't leave much to work with on the masters. AI is changing that, maybe we'll see some remasters in the future. But for now, the studio version is the way to go.
This is Priest playing at the US Festival in '83. They were touring for Screaming For Vengeance at the time. He said this the title song from our latest album when he introduced the song. I've seen this entire set on RU-vid; it should still be up if you ever want to check it out.
When I was a teenager, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, David Coverdale, Bon Scott and Brian Johnson ruled my musical landscape. And I was happy. :)
I actually know a kid that hopped on a bus and traveled halfway across country to see this concert. Thirty years ago he accidentally became a part of rock history when Axl Rose jumped on him at a concert, starting a riot in the process, for taking a picture of him. His club brothers saw to it that a proper response was given.
This concert video they did is in my top 3 all time best! The set is great, the energy is ridiculous, and the sound production for 40 years ago is CHOICE!🤌 Rob sounds incredible in this show🙌
Glad you noticed the dual guitar harmony section in Screaming for vengeance - Judas Priest were one of the pioneers of harmonised guitars and a large number of their songs have one or more guitar harmony sections. I also enjoy classical symphonies where counterpoint is used a lot (eg Bruckner) and I hear it in Judas Priest when the guitars of Tipton and Downing play harmony.

As a teen (many many years ago) I used to listen to metal in my bedroom, only for my dad to often enter the room and ask me to "turn that bloody noise down!"😂 Only on 2 occasions did my dad say something different. The first time was with Dio (I was BLASTING Rainbow at the time) and I immediately turned it down and my father just said "That man can sing" and walked straight back out the room leaving me speachless (there is always a first time for everything). The second time he did that was to compliment Rob Halford's vocal range. Again I was gobsmacked! They are still 2 of my favourite singers. Can I also add that f you haven't already done so to go and follow Rob on social media, he is a bloody hoot. His stuff is so cool, warm, funny and rocks. I think your love for himm will grow even more! Lovely work again.
I've seen Priest 17 times and once before they wore the leather. First time I saw them was when I was 12, I'm now 58. I haven't seen them since K.K. left the band, passed on the last time they came to town since only Rob and Ian are left.
I was there that day. The US festival 83 and the lineup that day was Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, Scorpions and Van Halen. What a crazy day !
This was at The Us festival in San Bernardino County. It's a hundred miles inland from Los Angeles California. A three day rock festival put on by Steve Wozniak, one of the founders of Apple Computer. 8 months of earth moving and landscaping to build the venue for the county.

At 72 he lost a small touch of his high highs, just naturally from aging...but he still sounds album ready live today...Robs a beast Late 80s early90s when I started hitting concerts, JP was one of the loudest bands going... For some more high highs, King Diamond/Merciful Fate

Great! You've now done three songs from the 80s, I would really like to see you analyse some of their 70s work. Victim of Changes and/or Beyond the Realms of Death from Unleashed in the East are good examples; for a splendid very early performance, Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver on the Old Grey Whistle Test, which shows what they could do even when forced to hold back a bit!
Phenomenal band and Rob’s is a legendary frontman. His voice and that band are a core memory for me. Btw, you are freaking entertaining and hilarious!!! Love the channel
What's great about Rob's singing is I can listen to Rocka-Rolla then put on Firepower and I'm hearing the same Rob Halford. Yes, there's been some change over the years, but Rob's voice has held up better than any vocalist I know of, and considering HOW he sings, hearing him still hitting those high notes is astounding after all this time.
Some suggestions for musicians/bands you haven't covered yet: Udo Dirkschneider - Was the singer of Accept until they kicked him out because the record label wanted a more common voice. I would go with "Balls to the wall" or "Fast as a shark" both from Accept. Or "Animal House" from his own band U.D.O. Lemmy Killmister - The iconic voice of Motörhead. Suggestions: "Ace of spades" or "Killed by death" Sabina Clasen - The singer of german Thrash Metal band Holy Moses. She was one of the first doing the death metal growling even before death metal was a thing. Suggestion "Queen of Siam" Kai Hansen - The singer of Power Metal legend Helloween and Gamma Ray. Suggestion: "Ride the Sky", "Guardians" or "How Many Tears" from Helloween Michael Kiske - The other famous singer from Helloween. Suggestion: "Dr. Stein" from Helloween Hansi Kürsch - Singer of blind Guardian.Suggestions: "Lord of the Rings", "The Bard's Song - In the Forest", "The Bard's Song - The Hobbit" Siouxsie Sioux - Famous singer of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Famous voice, she did go from punk to goth to pop. Suggestions: "Hong Kong Garden", "Spellbound", "Arabian Knights", "Dear Prudence", "Kiss them for me" Melissa Bonny - The singer of Ad Infinitum and The Dark Side Of The Moon. One of the few that can switch between singing and growling in a very short time like Tatjana fron Jinjer. Suggestions: "Unstoppable", "Upside down", "From the ashes" from Ad Infinitum or "New Horizons", "Jenny Of Old Stones", "Legends Never Die", "The Gates Of Time" from Dark Side Of The Moon

As for the Priest always fantastic...last time I saw them the opening line from Mr Halford....It's Saturday night in Glasgow and The Priest is back 🤣👌🤘blew me away!! Lead me to that cult. Seen Priest on several occasions and they always blow me away. Chatting with a friend last night at a gig who has worked with them and says Rob is crying with laughter funny. Make sure you see them on their UK tour next year!

I saw them the same year 1983, in London. Absolutely fantastic. Live heavy metal performed to perfection. If you want to see another fantastic live performance, then I recommend Victim of Changes from the 2009 Live at Seminole Arena.

I always knew about Rob Halford but I never really gave him the respect that he deserved until I saw him live, and the only reason that I saw him live is because I won tickets off the radio. I figured I would be fun and take some psychedelics for the show. I didn’t realize the devil would be performing that night. Anyway, I was shook by the things I heard that night and it forever changed me. I know your gonna dig this man. There is a reason they call home the Godfather of Metal….. I also don’t think he lost any flexibility, that man made noises I didn’t think were possible. This concert was in 2011 for reference
When you hear Judas Priest playing live in Glasgow, you can hear the most incredible fans ive ever heard at a Judas Priest concert, the bootlegs are out there, some of their material actually sound better than the live music released.
As far as how representative these songs are maybe a little history will help. On their first album JP were basically a bluesy hard rock band. Their second album, Sad Wings of Destiny from '76, is really where they embraced metal and marked the first major evolution of the genre since Black Sabbath's early-70s work. For the rest of the 70s JP were basically refining the sound they pioneered on Sad Wings, with Stained Class being IMHO their pinnacle. As the 80s hit JP struck commercial gold on MTV with Breaking the Law from their album British Steel. Screaming for Vengenace was their follow-up and IMHO is where they struck the best balance between "commercial accessibility" while still being respectable to hardcore metalheads. They did stumble a few times in the 80s going TOO commercial (Turbo especially) and as the 90s rolled around metal was getting harder, heavier, faster, more aggressive, and JP were in danger of being old-fashioned, so they released Painkiller as a kind of "statement" album to tell the young bands they could still keep up, and it remains one of the most popular and critically acclaimed metal albums ever. Then Rob left and Tim "Ripper" Owens took over for two albums that radically changed JP's sound to the displeasure of most fans. Rob returned in the 00's and they've released four albums since his return, with their last album, Firepower, getting glowing reviews from fans and critics. So these songs are from that period where they were trying to balance commercial accessibility with metalhead respectability, and was probably their best attempt at doing that. I'd love for you to react to some of their 70s music, which shows more of their blues rock influence. Victim of Changes is a great rec, especially the Unleashed in the East live version.
Well I wasn't at that particular concert but when that tour came here to Phx Az in 82 and Rob came out on stage on that Harley it forever changed my life as a 14 yr old new to metal.

this was a must play at every party i attended during the early eighties. scorps, acdc, metalica, iron maiden, black sabbath/ozzy, motley crue, cheap trick, fastway, pink floyd, motorhead, montrose/sammy hagar, dio, and a bunch more i dont want to bore you with, were also played. but another thing comin was the anthem. saying this as the biggest acdc fan that i am, was, and will die being.
Dead with you on the importance of making space for people with different backgrounds and different narratives. When it comes to gay lyrics, one song that really stands out is Raw Deal, which is very explicitly about the gay scene and gay rights, in a way that was pretty bold for 1977, especially for a band that was still finding its sound. A passionate and really powerful song.
I wasn't at this show, but the second concert I ever attended was on this tour. That was back in 1982 and if I'm not mistaken, within a week or two of when this was recorded. I can still remember every moment as if it was yesterday. This song is in my top 10 of Judas Priest songs. My number 1 is Victim of Changes. Since you are a vocalist, you should check that one out from the same performance. It is the vocal Olympics and Rob gets a gold metal.
OK I LOVE Judas Priest's '83 US Festival performance ! So happy when it was included as a DVD extra on the SFV 30th Anniversary re-release ! ICONIC ! Even though I LOVED the '82 Live Vengeance and '86 Fuel For Life tours too... man I really wish they'd recorded and released a live Defenders recording too !
Judas Priest has a new album coming out in March next year. They've released couple of songs from it on their YT channel and Halford still sounds absolutely epic.
Rob's natural speaking voice is actually on the low end, everything he does on stage is on purpose, including the distortion you speak of. After having seen them live countless times since the 80s, I can tell you its never exactly the same with Rob, but always a kick ass show.
Dio singing The Last In Line in 1986 live at The Spectrum, and also the song Don't Talk To Strangers live in Holland in 1983. Has to be those two versions, they are THE best versions vocally by Ronnie James Dio. His power, rangeg, distortion, tone are sublime. PLEASE react to them x
I saw Judas Priest in 2017 and he sounded AMAZING. I don't know how he got back the highs he'd temporarily lost between the late 90s-early 2000s, but he did. There's some videos of 2022 performances of "Painkiller" and "Touch of Evil" that sound better than ones he did when he was 20 years younger. Sadly, the 2022 videos all have sh*tty sound quality, so you wouldn't be able to do a live react vid, but still, check em out!

So this is the very first Judas Priest record ever bought as a teen, after having seen something on MTV probably, and it was a remarkable eye-opening album. I mean I knew that I like things with guitar in it, I was already a fan of rush, and Iron Maiden, but priest was it music I could not only appreciate but also play along with. I was in the aspiring guitarist who died bout a year of experience to the point and this album captures not just great hooks but solid musicianship that is still attainable and relatable. It's a great record, perhaps a more commercial offering in their discography but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It was a crossover album by all standards back in those days and this performance at the S Festival on the metal day, pretty much the men's the fact that they were going to be metal royalty
I was exposed to Judas Priest in '83 on a brand new rock station in my city with "Defenders Of The Faith", but bought the cassettes of Defenders and SFV through Columbia House at the same time and INSTANTLY fell in love with "Screaming For Vengeance" over Defenders... but just by a hair... they are the two top albums for me from JP ! "British Steel" rounds out the top three...
That was Priest playing the US Festival in 1983... the video should continue a fair bit after that, he was just about to start the audience participation part then end the song properly.

Great performance, I watched that concert video many times. Never get bored watching. I have been to the Pain Killer tour, Ram it Down tour, and Fire Power Twice. Awesome experience. If you not gone to Priest, it is definitely worth it. New Album is out.

Serious question... how much do you think Rob's ability to effortlessly change register or vocal tonality is by way of mic technique ?... i truly believe, although I haven't read this anywhere that Rob utilizes stereo mics with different effects on each channel... particularly with reverb effects, but I wonder if he also does it to achieve other vocal effects like the distortion you mention.

Oh badass! You are absolutely correct in playing more! They have a serious catalog of just killer songs. Another one of those Classic bands that lasted decades! I still can’t believe I saw them as much as I did on their best tours! 21 Effin times! I lived in one of their favorite cities, the band has stated that more than once, San Antonio, TEXAS! We were a major, industry known city to all the bands. We were a Heavy Metal stronghold and a Rock and Roll audience in general throughout the 80’s and still to this day. It was a different scene back then when all of this was new. We were THERE! We were industry famous and everyone came here on every tour. You had to be there, it was nuts! Huge clouds of pot smoke in the arena, everyone half buzzed on alcohol etc. We were animals! Very LOUD animals! Ha Ha!
