In this video I will upgrade the 512KByte of ram on the AWE64 Value to 2MBytes.
I take no responsibility if you try anything I do.
There is a Vogon thread about the mod.

Here is a Russian video of the same mod.

Replacing RAM chips on actual sound card to upgrade memory size - that is the spirit! My greatest respect to you.

When I saw the title I thought you would just use a memory expansion card, was not expecting an actual memory module transplant.😁 That was cool, great job! 😎

Yea its not anew mod but I only seen the Russian dude do it and some people that had some pictures. A friend sold his AWE64 Value to another friend this weekend and he had modded it to 2MB also the same way. Very low cost mod to do and most seems to agree 2MB is really the most useful amount for normal use, more seems to be bragging rights so yea this is a low cost way of getting some better sound font quality.

I like this mod, it's even easier than getting an expansion board...

Yea if you have the tools and a left over ram stick its basically free and makes a good uplift in sound quality I think.

MT-32 bank can't play better, as it is rearrange of presets to get match preset bank of Roland Mt-32, so all General Midi files will play totally off. But back to Awe64, I used to have it, with 8MB expansion board back in 96, even 8MB GMGS bank was nothing too much exciting, especially if you compare to Yamaha SW60XG with 4MB ROM, or even with original Roland Sound Canvas SC55 (around 3MB). I believe, that original idea of Creative was to create some kind of cost accessible alternative to samplers, but despite they own EMU system (Emulator I, II, Emax, Emax 2), which was producer of professional samplers used by major artists back in 80's/90's, they failed to create any exciting sound bank, all what was supplied on that CD together with RAM board was better variation of General Midi instruments, they could really add some interesting sounds from EMU/EMAX library. Anyway as fan fact, just check some Roland JV-1080 demos, you would not believe, that modul have only 8MB of ROM (of course much, much, better synth engine, but also fully digital).

The problem I find with the AWE64 is that aweutil dont work with protected mode games and memory extension technologies so basically anything using DOS4GW dont work with aweutil /EM:GM Sure I can load the sound bank, I can use it in dos with supported software like DOSmid that can either use onboard ROM in native AWE32 mode or use the cards General Midi Emulation and I have a custom soundfont of 2Mb loaded and the sound is totally different and much improved but pretty much nothing else works natively but a few softwares so ram for soundfonts feels like a wast in dos. Games just hangs with GM enabled and its its biggest pitfall. Sure the drivers under windows allows dos games to run with General Midi emulation and a soundfont loaded in the ram bank but its not as much fun as native dos. A replacement for aweutil would be needed to sort this out it seems because crative failed to do it and I dont see any project out there trying to fix. AWE64 is a bit of a disappointment in DOS, in the end it runs best set to Sound Blaster 16 mode in dos, might as well have a SB16 then.

@ Right, I was also expecting from it much more, but what totally surprised me, was real Roland MT-32, that machine really sounds, like real synth from pop/rock 80's production (which it is :-)). If you want ultimate GM midi fun, try to get Yamaha MOTIF-RACK classic, it have also GM mode, it is a little bit tricky to use, but that is rebalanced with absolutely outstanding sound quality, you will not recognize that midi files, played through it, and also it should be quite cheape nowadays :-)

Ooh! That looks like a lovely upgrade for my AWE cards. I might be trying that one out myself. The alternative would be to build an AWE64 SimmConn some day. Too much projects, too little time on earth… :p

it is necessary to solder the SPDIF output to the Sound Blaster AWE64 Value With sequencer for Sound Blaster AWE64 Value using the FM hardware synthesizer at 4-operators mode or using the Add hardware synthesizer ( it requires software that can use 4 operators instead of 2 operators ) to create quality sounds with the SPDIF output record to new high-quality sound cards or from them to the magnetic tape , can be achieved the studios quality sound It's difficult to find software that uses 4 operators instead of 2 operators that give a sparse sound , or find System Exclusive (SysEx) in a MIDI file with a sequencer to use 4 operators for bether sounds Sampler EMU8000 is not recommended to use it becose has 16 bit samples, although the quality can be improved using EMU8000 DSP with controllers Non Registered Parameter Number ( NRPM ) or System Exclusive ( SysEx ) at MIDI file with sequencer

It's not possible to use a higher density chip? I have found 4MiB EDO chips available.

Sure but it requires other chips to address that extra ram. The gold version I think has a programed PLA to support 2+2MB if I recall. The schematics exists for that and there are new upgrades you can buy for more ram that will fit the expansion header. But the card it self can not address more without those extra PLA chips. web.archive.org/web/19980522062527/creaf.com/sound/64-gold/ct1930.pdf web.archive.org/web/19980522062536/creaf.com/sound/64-gold/ct1950.pdf Those PDF's has the schismatics for the different upgrade modules up to 28MB and the part list. The problem is that you need to program those PLA chips and those files idk where to find and the modern implementations dont use those chips it seems anyways.

Very nice work. Congratulations. In what brand of motherboard de you fit the AWE64 ? It is probably a motherboard that uses ISA 16 bits slot, am I wrong ? Best wishes.

Used for testing, more work to be done to it then it will find a home.

@@ivanpedromuricy Yes its 16bit ISA. The card is in a box because its used for testing sound on motherboards.
