Steve Howe, the guitarist on this song, won best guitarist by Guitar Player magazine 5 years in a row. That, for guitarists, is like winning the oscar 5 years in a row. They retired him from the category by starting a Guitarist hall of fame. He's the most versatile guitarist in rock, nay, in ANY, music.

Alan White and Patrick Moraz wrote this opening as part of his audition. It went onto the album pretty much as it was. Steve's solo in this song is so unique in the world of guitar. Unlike many solos these days, it doesn't just sound like practicing scales and doing exercises.

The beginning of Close to the Edge sounded like noise, but beautiful noise, when I first heard it. After playing guitar for a couple of years, I figured out it was based upon the 2nd mode of D Harmonic minor. A bass buddy of mine figured out that Rick's fast, tinkley-sounding repetitive riff during Steve's wacky solo is actually the same riff as Chris's bass line, only twice as fast. If you slow the section down you can hear it (back in the 70's of course that was 16 speed!!!). But yeah, even after so many years, I can always hear something new.
@davep8221

@@babarishka One really cool thing is that musicians like you can appreciate the technical things also, but people like me who know nothing except how to press [Play] can also love it. I've actually read some papers musicians have written on the technical aspects. But, IMO, the thing that's most important is that the technical skills are just a means to the end of making enjoyable music, not the end itself (except in a few places).

Wonderful reaction! "Hold up, Bruh!"... The first time bought and listened to this I was pretty lost. I was used to their earlier stuff and found the almost experimental "jazz" approach to rock bewildering. It took a long while for me to "get" it. Now I absolutely love it. Yes music is like a workout for your musical mind. They can push you past what you think is your comfort zone. But later you're glad they did. Steve Howe is my all time guitar hero. "Cha cha cha..."

One last thing...Time Signature is important (notes to beats, ostensively. but this can be modified as it is often in this song) but Prog changes them often. Regardless of the type of Prog (Prog Metal, Prog Rock, Classical, and especially Baroque, which Yes is in the rock world) thrives on odd Time changes and signatures.

Kristin, thankyou for reviewing and appreciating this amazing track. It is about chasing sound (hence the title) ie trying to make as many good sounds as possible to "expand our conscience" and "all to know, and see, the look in your eyes" (referring to God). Hence there is a hectic, almost manic, production of a huge variety of sounds, and one of the sounds is the human voice (hence the cha cha cha part).

Along the album "Tales From Topographic Oceans" this is the most Die Hard Fan quality of the 70's Yes. "Soon (Oh Soon The Light)" was the limited edition, edited single from this album. It is worth of checking out of its own. :) Edited version of "Sound Chaser" was the B-side.

Back in the 80s during the 90125 album concert tour, Jon sang "Soon", a song that slays my heart every time I hear it. The lyrics are brutally deep and meaningful. I had front row seats. He sang the first 2 lines of the song directly to me. Needless to say, it pierced my soul to have that moment. 😌🧡

Time signatures are the rhythm of the song. Most songs are in 4/4 (1-2-3-4) or waltz time or 3/4 (1-2-3, 1-2-3). Think any AC/DC song for 4/4. Nothing Else Matters by Metallica is in 3/4. Just count 1-2-3, 1-2-3 with the guitar. I think Soundchaser is in 6/8, but maybe more musically inclined people can confirm that. One of my favourites!

It’s always funny and joyful watching someone hear Yes for the first time, especially this album. It’s called Relayer for multiple reasons, one of which is the heavy use of over-dubbing. Forty+ tracks were (re-)layered at some point! You really owe yourself another listen... or two... or twenty... By all means, listen to these albums: The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans, and the rest of Relayer. They were recorded in sequence (with the live album, Yessongs, right in the middle of the series.

Love your reactions - yeah, Yes can get pretty out there. Two other prog rock classics you might want to check out are: Patrick Moraz (the keyboardist on Sound Chaser) - The Story of I and Todd Rundgren's Utopia (with the eyes on the cover). Both albums need to be listened to in their entirety to really get the groove, especially Moraz's album which is sort of a sci-fi concept album. Oh yeah,, Circus by Argent is another prog favorite of mine.

"Relayer" is that forgotten album. Yes. To fans, "Gates of Delerium" and " Sound Chaser" are classic and Deep Cut fans love the whole thing. But let's face it, a lot of good Prog was coming out at this time and there were just no signature riffs or songs. (Still, live, the kept these songs alive!) that made it stand out to young ones into Prog. However, with a backward glance, it is spectacular!

Kristen, I have been following along. I am at the end of the Steve Howe guitar solo. I first heard this album when it came out in the late 70's, I was a full fledged Yes fan, I have all of their albums. I would skip the solo, I enjoyed the music as a group. But I love how much you admire Steve's work. I am a bass player, and Chris Squire was my idol back then. I love seeing younger people enjoying the music that I loved 40 years ago. Rock needs to come back!

So how nerdy do you want to get? What you hear at 4:46 is called a cadenza (not the dining shelf- that's a *credenza* haha). A cadenza normally appears during the end of the first section of a concerto, and it is done by a soloist virtuoso. In classical music, an orchestra would typically finish the piece after the soloist was done. Welcome to prog rock. lol

Talk about starting at the deep end! This is Yes at their most extreme, most dissonant, most experimental. It’s about pushing boundaries and creating textures and moods. This is to rock music what abstract art is to paintings - dissecting familiar forms and reassembling them to experience them from different perspectives. I’m impressed you didn’t run away - this is Yes’ least accessible song from the least accessible side of Yes’ least accessible album.
