Center channel intermittently dropping out. This resolves with a light tap, which may indicate an issue with the speaker protection relays.
This video shows how to repair this type of issue on the Sony STR-DE675 amplifier. Fault likely common to many brands of AV amplifiers.

I have a Sony STR-DA5ES that had an intermittently working front right speaker, I found the service manual and tracked down the same soldering areas as shown on your board for that speaker. The DA5ES has a separate speaker board, so the disassembly was much easier. It was hard to tell if the solder was cracked or not (I don't have a trained eye), but I resoldered the connections and reassembled the receiver. So far so good. Thanks for the video.

Many thanks! I have a DE375 that makes clicky noises and sometimes the center channel went silent. I resoldered all relay pins and it seems to work again :)

Thanks for making a short to the point video. Very efficient to learn from.

I have a similar Sony receiver from the same era (STR-DE335) I recently got it on ebay for $40. I've had it for several months, occasionally I hear something internal clicking out of nowhere (must be the relays, it looks like there are three), and sometimes the sound stops coming out of certain speakers (I have three plus a sub), giving it a whack usually makes it work again. I was kind of nervous something major was wrong with it, but if all it is is some weak solder joints that's very relieving because I really like this receiver. Should be easy to fix. Thanks for the video!

Sounds like the same problem to me - easy fix. They're pretty solid amps, over 20 years of daily use and this one is still going strong.

@@Justfixitmate that's good to hear. Mine runs pretty hot, also made me a little concerned but then again it has good ventilation. I've always been a fan of Sony products. Everything I've had from my 20 year old Discman to my 3 year old Xperia have held up well

@@Justfixitmate Thanks for the video , i have an old Sony receiver str k850 that won't memorize preset radio stations no more, i have to manually put in frequency in order to tune in station ,but if i try to set up another frequency it looses the first one and so on, this might be old caps, what you guys experts on radios think i should look for, thanks

I have a mid 70s Sony SQD 2020 4 channel decoder that does the same thing on the front left channel. Could mine have the same problem?

I have the same amplifier (Sony) and I have tried to connect a car radio to it by cutting the wire that comes from the main part to the small square part which is the output for video display (where the yellow output). there were namely 3 wires, a ground, a 12 volt and a 25 volt. After I got my car radio connected to that power, it worked in the first place and it turned off afterwards. Now I have removed the radio and have bought it back in place as it was before. Now the amplifier works but there is no sound. I have measured volts on the wire that I had previously connected to the radio. it shows 9 volts on both the one that had 12 volts and the other that was on 25 volts. how should i rapier it? thank you for your time.

just checking if you might know this. I have a Sony Amplifier, type TA-FB720R must be 30 years old or older. Still works and I just use it with one of my computers. But I am getting a kind of a "rattling noise". It is not a contineous noise but I get a series of fast ticks tick-tick-tick-tick etc, maybe 20 ticks and then it stops and a bit later again. It seems some sort of discharge. Maybe the condensator? It only started with a few ticks but now it is more often and I turned it off now. Does this problem sound familiar or could it be a multitude of things? The amplifier body is grounded so it is some part in the amplifier that is causing the problem.

Can't say I have seen this before, but a ticking noise could be relay related. What happens during the ticking noise? do your speakers cut out?

@@Justfixitmate thanks for your reply. Not really sure because I only use it actually for my computer to talk to me or say something out loud when something happens in the charts I am watching. So I am not contineously listening to sound and the ticking also comes in small bursts. But I relocated it so it doesnt get that hot and it seems to do it much less now. So it seems fine for the time being

Thank you so much for sharing this video. I had the same issue did what you showed on your video and it worked save me from getting a new receiver $$

It is a shame that modern receivers don't have a removable panel on the underneath, it would make like so much easier for the sake of a bit of penny pinching on the manufacturers part, but of course they don't want to see products repaired, they would much rather sell you another one.

I hate to think about all the great equipment that ends up in land fill, just because of a cracked solder joint. Things just aren't built with repair in mind. BGAs, laser welded housings... A removable panel would make life easy for this kind of repair. Although, as you can see, this amp isn't too difficult to get into. With half a dozen repairs already under its belt, i can crack this open in no time.

Hey I've got a Teac amplifier and recently the sound has been cutting out (and the amp makes a clicking noise when it does this), but still receives power. The only thing that appears to work is to repeatedly switch it on and off until it comes back. Any ideas what it could be?

Ok so I have same problem but not on this unit. Have no idea what I’m looking at in there so maybe I resolder everything 😂
@Justfixitmate
@Justfixitmate 3 года назад
haha. There's a chance you might cause more problems if you do - easy to accidentally make a solder bridge somewhere... Just re solder the connections on the relays (blue rectangular boxy looking things) near the speaker connectors side of the PCB.
