I am a metalhead and was surfing for some festival videos. Came across your channel for some reason. Man, I knew that modular synths existed, but it's somehow mesmerizing how you present your content and your passion. I love that it's showing that EDM can be so much more than just pressing the power button of your desktop PC. The complex triggering, cascaded triggering and modulation of all the variables, makes this craft so complex it's almost impossible to wrap your head around the fact that there are endless possibilities for a unique sound. In a way it's "fretless" soundscaping. I love it. You are really doing a great job. Actually I think this is metal AF. \m/ Thanks man.
Glad you came across my channel! I really much appreciate your kind words about my work and your comment! This soundscaping is like exploring an endless universe of sounds and sonics. Sometimes I do it "to fret", sometimes just "fretless". And I am so happy I find people that join me on the journey! You think this is metal? Then this is metal indeed! Thank you man!
@Hans Oslo Tommy Creep has a zine called Black Panels Only and its only the darker side of modular. It has various metal as well as industrial, general blackness, drone, noise based ear-rape, audio sacrifice, ritual, divination and more. Lots of unholy metal-modular unions out there. There is even a module in coffin shape with real dirt in it from Edgar Allan Poe's grave site to send your signal through to distort. If that's not metal, I don't know what is.
Happy to see you made a video again! 🙏🏻 Hope, given the circumstances, you and family are OK. Hang in there! We do whatever we can to support your country 🇺🇦 As others stated here; I would be the first to visit your show if you play live; you are an amazing artist!! Unfortunately, although from Amsterdam, I live in the US now, so not much good techno here 😞 Keep up the good work 🎶😎✊🏻
I can’t believe how hard you go with superb taste “just” for a tutorial. A couple questions, I’m from Amsterdam as well. Do you play somewhere around here? I would love to hear your music live. Also, would be really cool to listen your songs in Apple Music, like the Modular creations 4 and a jam of the o ne in this video. Ps thanks for the last drop 😉
Thank you Luca for so many kind words, my friend! To be honest, I've never played live yet, but I'd love to. I am figuring out my way into that. Pretty much same goes about releasing music. Glad people enjoy my RU-vid show!
@Ihor, your audience is waiting!! It is almost unbelievable for me that you’ve never performed. You always come across to me as a seasoned performer/producer. Your work is so refined and tasteful, you need to make a set soon and get out there man! Always love your videos too, you are also a great teacher, and I’ve missed you, so I am really glad you’re back! Never stop! Btw, also from the Netherlands :) I hope to see you soon!
Good to see you're back, always love your videos. Thanks to you I started playing out with my modular last year. Just smaller parties, but really fun and the response have been great! Keep up the excellent work and keep enjoying music and life!
I have tried with many different synths and VST's to recreate your initial square-wave before you add anything else. There is layer of polish either from the Elektron or in post production that I cannot reproduce. Please let us know how to get that warm fat init bass.
Glad you are back my friend! Excellent video as always. I spy a dfam in the background. I hope to see how you utilize that synth sometime. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Nice Ihor! Impressive how much complexity you can get from seemingly simple sequencing & modulation. Would be cool to see you combine this with some other elements, say, adding an arpeggio melody from the Korg, etc.
Wow - the patch looks simple but you got quite a bit going on there - and more to the point it SOUNDS good I know going modular is a TERIBLY expensive addiction - but I cant stop looking :) :) :)
Very very nice Sound I subscribed to Your c Channel about 2 Years ago . . .I watched my first t Tutorial from You about Elektron Devices. Back then it helped me a lot and now 2 Years later i watch Your Tutorials again but this time with Modular Devices. . . . and Your Sound still packs a Punch 👍❤
Ihor, you're the best, man. You have inspired me to get BACK into modular after many years away. A decade ago, I got into modular for all the wrong reasons (gear lust), and not actually making music. Your Techno Breaks have broken down the techniques that I always wanted to achieve. Bravo and thank you! PS-What are your preferred patch cables? Very organized-nice job avoiding that spaghetti.
Thank you for your kind words! Glad you dig this format! Cables are erica synths and black market. I am trying to be organized with them and I avoid long cables. For video they may create a mess in the frame.
Hi Ihor hope your well my friend, you’ve been quiet for to long so looking forward to your next exploration Modular Quest,as I asked u to do a case of modules, different Elements that u would take out to do a Live gig, choice of modules??? Control elements of such modules in isolation to morph form a unified sonic Pallette Again wishing u well, many thanks Martin👍🆒🎶🎶🎶🇬🇧🔱👁🌈🕸⚡️🙏🙏
Thank you my good friend Martin. I am indeed on the "not planned" break with my creations on RU-vid. But I am coming back and I hope to do so soon! Thank you for the ideas that you always share with me. Thanks for the support. It means a lot to me.
This is the most helpful video. Thank you! If you have time, could you make a video about making a baseline sidechained with deep plucked bass onto a drum track with a lot of swing ? Maybe something with short snappy off beat snares in a « tech house » type of vibe? I am very curious to see which modules you would use for that type of rythme!
Hello Ihor hope you are all good 👍 I was wondering your opinion on the high quality music daw apps ,I have GStomper studio its pretty awesome powerful virtual analogue synth and drum machine /sequencer , any views on these type of music creator devices cheers
Hey! In all honesty I've never used GStomper or any other studio apps. I guess you mean the once on the phones, right? Perhaps the only thing that I use on my phone is a Flip Sampler. And it is dope!
Really inspiring and great sounding. Your whole approach seems an almost perfect implementation of the expression "less is more" - although the amount of work you put in to make it breathe is staggering. Well done Sir!
I think there is a way to do something similar with Serum. But not the same. Every module has their own unique features in them. Like the Span in Belgrad. It is going to be hard to replicate. Though you got me into thinking 💭
Sorry bud, a little correction. 2 pole and 2 peak filter mean different things. 2 pole filter means filter is reducing signal at the cutoff frequency for -12 db. Belgrad has this option toggleable, so you can set the filter to be either 2 or 4 pole. 2 peak filter is a filter with two resonance controls, allowing for more complex signal processing when filter is in any of the bandpass modes. I am not 100% sure but each resonance can be assigned to one of the rolloff frequencies. Nice bass and good video though.
You are absolutely right! My bad on mixing the term up 😊 Thanks for the correction! In Belgrad you can control the balance of the peaks and also the span/distance between them. Basically with the balance control going to either extreme you could achieve something close to what you mentioned I believe.
@@IhorMedia Belgrad reminds me (well, aside from being the city I was born at:) of ladder filter on Moog Matriarch - well, filters, plural , and I believe xaoc was at least partially inspired by it - where in serial mode both cuttoff points, for the low cut and high cut have their own resonance, creating those two peaks. I wasn't trying to be petty and just correct you for a sake of it, you make great videos, I just thought some people might mix poles and peaks, especially people new to the filters.
Can you sample yourself saying "nice" and use it in a tune? Just at the end of a phrase in a loop... Also "but I think we can take it further" any time there's a section change.. Because, your voice sounds sick over your baseline and kick loop!
"If it makes people dance, you pretty much done" LOVE THAT, Great explanation of everything man. I'm getting into sound design with modular synths and this video has been by far the most helpful
