In this sound design tutorial, I show you how to make an 80s Synth Brass patch.
I am using Xfer Serum, but you can follow along on most synthesisers.
Time Stamps
0:00 - Intro
0:25 - Sound Demo 1
0:50 - Sound Demo 2
1:10 - Initial Patch
2:00 - Osc Tuning (+10 cent on osc B)
2:30 - Unison
3:15 - Amplitude Envelope (A=15ms D= 300ms S=-3dB R= 200ms)
4:00 - Filter Envelope (A=100ms D= 1.3s S=70% R= 300ms)
6:00 - Velocity Sensitive
6:50 - FX Filter, Chorus, Reverb and Delay
9:45 - Alternative Waveshapes
11:00 - Perfecting the Attack

Great! Here's another tip: A quick envelope on the pitch of ONE of the oscillators - used on many classic synth brass patches. Steve Porcaro (Toto/Africa) does this himself, he calls it the Blip.

Same for me with the ambient patches: exactly what I needed, and by a route I hadn't expected, which encourages me to think a bit more laterally and not just dl new synths in the hope of finding the right preset.

the highest quality tutorials on the net. i thought i was just going to learn how a brass synth is made, but i learned how to use a second filter as a ceiling, that less voices might actually be a more lush and analog sound, and a reminder how important it is to vary velocity with synths as those subtle changes are crucial to keeping electronic sound fresh to the ears. thank you!

The thing you said about the saws and their imperfections in old synths made me smile. The first time you start putting your synths through an oscilloscope you start to wonder what even passes for a saw wave. I recently got a Cobalt 8 which has various cool saw variants kind of emulating this behaviour. Other synths I have don't have oscillators this complex. Fascinating in terms of possibilities and importantly for me it's portable.

Hey Mike, just wanted to thank you for the amazing content. It's making my life so much easier and I'm getting better every day! Also, I think it'd be great if you explained some native FL synths. I've been expanding my arsenal lately, but the native synths are where most people make first contact with sound design. There are already many tutorials out there, but nobody does this like you. Trust me: I've looked.
