In this lecture I go very quickly over many terms used to analyze and discuss sound devices (like rhyme) in poetry, using Edgar Allan Poe's poem, "The Raven" as an example. See mrturnersenglis...

Hi, Mr Turner! I do enjoy your explanation of the poetic device of raven. It inspires me as a learner and a teacher. But I am curious whether you can recommend some books to read if someone wants to know more about the poetic device! Thanks in advance!

The rhyme scheme is ABCBBB. If most of the poem's stanzas have the same rhyme pattern of ABCBBB, per stanza, then, ABCBBB becomes the rhyme scheme.

What grade do you teach? I'm glad you touched on rhythm. My college students come to my class without knowing about poetic foot or meter, or even rhythm generally. It's a shame, because rhythm is so important when studying classical poetry.

This was a grade 11 class. Feet aren't really discussed in most people's high school classes in my experience other than when talking about iambic pentameter. I like to teach it, but I don't test this stuff. It's more about helping them conceptualize it.

Here's a thought that's been bothering me for awhile now. What if Poe never wrote The Raven himself? What if he stole it from someone else because there wasn't any copyright back than? None of his other poems come close to resemble Poe's voice in The Raven that I can tell. Example, someone realized Richard Bachman was Stephen King by the way King wrote and his identity was exposed. I don't think there's a consistency with the rest of Poe's poems to say he was the original writer of The Raven. What are your thought's? I'd really like to know in order to believe Poe actually wrote The Raven. Thanks.

Anthony Kamm Poe’s voice is pretty distinctive here. Is this your sly way of asking for help with a homework assignment to identify Poe’s stylistic traits? Try talking about mood, his allusions and archaic diction, the recurring motif of dead beauties, and the use of a strong central symbolic image.

I'm not a student. I'm just someone who wants to understand why this is the only poem he wrote that doesn't sound like any of his other poems? I would say after the success of The Raven that he might have made some attempt at writing other poems that have the same rhythm. I'm not much of a poetry type of guy, but this poem is a masterpiece. Thank you for responding back so quickly. Have a nice day. :)

What difference would that make? The Raven reached us thanks to him. Conspiracy has no importance. By the way, good poets steal and bad poets borrow...

@@simoncenteno2755 ... He was known as a man of poetry, and greatly rewarded for his work. He also received a deal of about 13k if I recall, before he passed. No one has chimed in "just now", he was relatively famous for his works while he was alive, if not how did he make a living? Please refrain from using all caps next time. Thank you.
