If you're interested in learning how to record and post process dialogue sound for video, please have a look at my courses over at school.learnlig...
In this week's Sound for Video Session we demonstrate how to use the an audio recorder to send the audio directly to camera. This way you get the better sound quality of the dedicated audio recorder and the sound is all synced up while shooting so you don't have to sync in post.
This requires that your camera have an input, that your audio recorder has an output and that your recorder can generate a tone (sometimes called slate or slate tone).
There are some other nuances that we cover in our production sound fundamentals course on line vs microphone level and the need to match between the camera and recorder.
For details on powering your MixPre-3 or 6, please see the tech notes over at Sound Devices: www.sounddevic...

A much needed bit of info. I once approached the camera guy on set with a cable from my recorder and told him I wanted to run tone to his camera. He replied that he didn't need it because his camera had a tone thing built in. So...
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Haha! So you ended up recording separately and not sending audio to him? Or his magic tone feature figured it all out and everyone was happy? ;-)
@RallenMan

Curtis Judd I quickly explained that tone comes from the originating source to align levels with the camera. I told him tone is his friend and he let me do my thing with his help. I told another camera guy once that Tone is the Rosetta Stone between sound and camera.

Take-away lesson from your experiences: Being the sound guy is as much about the ability to develop positive working relationships as it is having your technical chops.

Curtis Judd Yes. In fact I would say it is more important to have a good relationship than to have good tech chops. People hire people they like. Your tech knowledge will always get better and your client will trust you to make it work.

Curtis Judd is absolutely amazing!! I've recently gotten into video production and Curtis is my new hero!! Everything he puts out is top notch...even down to the amazing description layout where a lot of videos fall short. Thanks Curtis for your amazing channel!! I do have two questions about running audio from the MixPre into my DSLR. In general, how much of a quality difference is there between the audio recorded on the MixPre and the audio routed via 3.5mm into the camera? Also, would the 3.5mm cable introduce a greater risk for rf interference? Thank you
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
Thanks so much, Richard! It depends to a large extent on the particular camera. Since you are using the MixPre as the preamp, you're basically relieving the camera of that duty. However, the camera must still convert the audio analogue signal to digital. So depending on the camera, the quality can range from poor to pretty good. I would test with your particular camera both ways to confirm it is good enough for what you're trying to accomplish. The cable can pick up interference, but usually short 3.5mm cables from the recorder to camera are not a problem. Just avoid 10 meter long 3.5mm cables. 😀

Thanks, very helpfull! The Mixpre has good amps and also I guess good digital analog converter. If we put the audio into digital in the mixpre, then again back to analog for the cable to the gh5 then again into digital in the camera with the worse converter, do we loose sound quality? Is the sound on the sd card in the mixpre better than the one in the camera?

Hi Curtis (I don't own a mixpre but) if your camera led meter don't have a -20 mark but -12, you can change the tone level out in mixpre to -12 and calibrate your camera to that level (sorry for my English if I'm not very clear)

I'm with Erick on this one, and usually do this when working with DSLRs. Did you have a reason for not changing the tone to -12?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Only because with most of the bigger cameras, -20dB is the standard. I think it may also have to do with the idea that using less amplitude (e.g., -20dB), you're less likely to run into differences between the camera and audio recorder in terms of dynamic range issues. But that's just conjecture as to why -20dB is the "standard".

Is this basically the best way to record high quality audio directly to the video file, rather than having a separate audio track that you have to sync in post? I've been searching for a way to do this for a while now, in order to cut down on post-production time, and this seems like the solution, but I just want to make sure.

Great tutorial Curtis. Appreciated! I have a newbie question for you. I just went through all the steps shown in the video to match the levels between my new MixPre3II and my Canon Rebel T7i. I had no issues with the process, and my test videos sound great. That said, I noticed something odd when I connected my camera to my smart tv via a HDMI cord. My videos still sound great, but I noticed that they were significantly quieter than your RU-vid videos. I haven't uploaded my test videos to RU-vid to a side-by-side comparison between the volume levels of your videos and mine, but the difference seemed significant. Is this normal? Will my videos somehow be magically louder once their uploaded to RU-vid? Thanks for any thoughts or commentary you can offer on this.
@curtisjudd

Hi Dean, Yes, setting levels for recording is to ensure you don't clip or distort during recording. But then in post production, you need to loudness normalize the audio like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OKSWPrT5upo.html

Hi Curtis, thank you for this fantastic resource. I have a question, do you know that there is anyway to connect the MixPre 6 to a camera so that when you rec the camera you also rec on the audio? I have a Canon C70, and I am considering adding my MixPre to my camera rig for days when I need more than two lavs out. At the moment on days with a lot of audio sources I carry my MixPre with me in a side bag, but this can be distracting as I need to remember to rec in two places at once, and also because I need to frequently jam TC to prevent drift which seems significant between the two devices. I would love to be able to integrate the two systems, ive been looking for answers in the user guide, but I cant seem to figure anything out! All my best!
@curtisjudd

The MixPre has an HDMI feature that allows auto start of recording with a select number of cameras. I don't know whether the C70 is included, but you can contact Sound Devices support to confirm.

Basic Question: If the goal is always the best audio possible, why would we send/route the MixPre Kasmir-quality signal back through the camera's inferior preamps? What am I missing? PS. I'm just getting started on the audio side. I have the new Sony a7III and will most likely purchase the MixPre-6 and your LL&S course.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Hi Dan, It depends on the requirements for the production one is working. Some productions need a very fast turn-around, like many news productions, so it is common in those cases to capture the sound with a high quality mixer and send a feed from the mixer to camera. For narrative types of productions, there is often more time so in many of these cases, the production will use the mixer's recorded sound to keep the quality as high as possible. Happy recording!
@DanSme1
@DanSme1 6 лет назад
So...if my shoot is NOT a "fast turn-around," then I'd just use the camera to send timecode to the recorder for the easiest post-processing sync. Correct?

Yes, if the recorder is mounted to the camera rig. Or if not, timecode generators or a good old clapper-board/slate. :)

Thanks for the video Curtis. I’m connecting my MixPre 10 II to my Panasonic G85 and I’m getting a small bit of noise. It’s not near as clean as the recorded audio on the MixPre. I’m using the X1/X2 output set as L/R and have tried different settings from -40 to -10db on the MkxPre while having the G85 set to -12db. I’ve also tried using a combination of a Movo attenuator to reduce it more. Any thoughts on how to have completely silent output to the camera? Or is there a special 3.5mm TRS cable I should look at using?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Bourbon Pursuit, I think the more likely culprit is the mic input on the G85. I've had pretty good results attenuating the 3.5mm output on the MixPre by about 35dB with my GH5 and it isn't as clean as the MixPre, but good enough for sync or for non-paid projects.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi Nick and thanks! I almost never send the audio from my recorder to camera. But it is good to know how to do it in case a project requires it and there are a lot of people that prefer to keep their post workflow free of syncing and are willing to take the slight quality hit. This is mainly for those people. :)
@RallenMan
@RallenMan 7 лет назад
Curtis Judd I irritated a camera guy on a corporate job once when I told the producer that it is better to go dual system with time code than to mix my sound directly into the camera. The camera guy only wanted a cable from my mixer to his Red Scarlett. Said that's all he ever did on Corp shoots and he also was the post guy. So I ran a cable and recorded dual system. He didn't use my sound tracks. Later I realized that I tried to mess up the workflow that he had successfully used for years. I figured that out after he did not use me again. The project went on the web and the sound from the Red camera was very good. Dual system was not needed. So, moral of the story is although it is the duty of a sound guy to provide the best sound possible within reason, don't think we have to impose our workflow on someone else. Consider the end use of the product. And remember if you gain stage properly, you can make almost any audio recording device sound pretty good, even a Red Scarlett.

Hi Curtis - great video as always! On Wednesday this week we're recording a tutorial where someone is demonstrating a Braille embosser. The embossers are not the quietest of machines - actually they're generally quite loud. The person demonstrating will be wearing a wav mic and I'm going to run the audio into a MixPre 6 then output to a Canon XA20. am I right in thinking that the analogue limiters will still protect me if the audio clips? So it'd go mic into MixPre, output of MixPre to Canon. Cheers, Glen

I typically record with the levels a little higher and rely on the limiters to save me, while my camera levels were set to peaking at around -6db. So after watching this, I decided to try this method while also switching the Limters Off when there are no peaks in dialogue. I'm curious to hear if the overall sound quality will be 'better'. (I have my MKH 50 going into the MixPre-3 into the Canon 80D). Curtis, I know each situation is different. But generally speaking, if you're setting your recording levels to -20db, do you find that you don't need the Limiters ON because your levels aren't even close to peaking?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 7 лет назад
Hi Paul. Because the MixPre's preamps are so clean, I generally like to run them a little lower, with dialogue sound peaking closer to -20dB and perhaps up to -12dB. I prefer to keep the limiters on to catch the very rare over-modulation. If the limiters are kicking in often, I know that I'm probably running my gain too hard and need to back off. This is all based on the assumption that I'm going to do some post processing to loudness normalize the audio. If you're just recording and publishing straight to RU-vid or wherever without any post processing of the audio, then you may want to run the gain a little hotter so that it is reasonably "loud" for your audience.

@curtisjudd 3 года назад
Hi Allen, Feeding audio to camera can save time in post if you're already mixing your audio. It makes more sense for quick turn-around content like news and some corporate video. If you are planning to sync in post, this can also help by recording a sync track to the camera. Then you are assured that the process of syncing the recorder audio to the camera audio in post will work reliably. But of course, this isn't required. If you prefer, you can record scratch audio to your camera with the camera's in-built microphone and use that to sync to the higher quality recorder audio clips. Most of the pro video editing apps have a feature which will automatically sync two clips based on their audio tracks so it is pretty straightforward these days. Which app will you use for editing?

@@curtisjudd Thanks for the quick reply! Makes sense. I'm usually just video recording myself in "talking head" tech videos or one other person so no real "mixing" going on. I mainly use Camtasia for video editing (I know it's not pro stuff but it's simple and works well for my needs). I found this video which has some guidance but it doesn't look like there is a kind of "autosync" feature (www.techsmith.com/blog/sync-audio-and-video-sources/). Can't wait to get this recorder and start trying it out! I've watched some of your videos (which are all great and well done BTW) and curious if the SD card type and speed matter (UHS I vs II) like it does with cameras. Thanks again for replying. The workflow you describe above is exactly what I do on my SD 302. Although attenuating the 302 requires (as you probably know) an arcane series of button sequences and flashing LEDs. I wish the MixPre and the SD-302 had the convenience of the MixPre-D where I see a simple Line/Mic/AES level switch on both outputs.

Hi Curtis, I'm curious about your thoughts as far as sending audio from the 10T to a camera via xlr. I’ve read that the Mixpre doesn’t provide a “pro” output level but consumer version and that you should therefore set the camera input to Mic. But in your Light & Sound course on the 10T you set the pocket cinema camera to line level. Also you suggest tone level of -20db here but -10 in the course example. I'm going to be working with a Canon C300 and just looking for some clarification around this stuff. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!!!

Hi Dicky, with a MixPre 10T and Canon C300, I would set the camera's input to line level and use a -20dB tone from the MixPre to calibrate levels. I have used my MixPre 10T to send audio to a C200 with these settings with great results. Best wishes!

The difference is small but present. The GH5's audio converters are decent but if you need to save time in post and won't be doing a lot of processing of the audio, then it is probably fine to feed the audio to the GH5.

Looking into the Mix Pre-3 for my dual GH5 setup and had a question. We shoot a ton of interviews. Typically I run two mics into an H5 and use the mic that sounds better. Had an issue with power failure on the H5 using a powerbank that caused me to lose an interview recently. Looking into a redundant setup where each mic is going into an isolated recorder or one straight into the camera using a Rode newshooter for one of the booms. QUESTION(s): Does recording into a Mix Pre or an H5 and then sending that line out signal ultimately to the GH5 degrade the audio quality? If the GH5 is set to -12db is it still coloring the recording or are you getting just the quality from the external recorder? What would be your go to setup for truly redundant audio?
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions

Feeding audio to camera is a fine approach that I use more than ever. Technically, it will degrade the audio quality a bit but running the audio to camera gives you options in post. I'd do it assuming that the camera audio will be backup, but if you find it to be good enough for what you're doing, then you've saved yourself a bit of time.

Curtis, a field recording question if you don't mind. I am pretty new to this but get the concept of a good recording but I am on a bit of a budget for this next shoot I have been asked to do. I am considering purchasing a used Sennheiser G3 wireless transmitter/receiver without a lav mic. What type of lav mic would you recommend for this? I have been told the lav mic that came with it, the ME 2, is a really good mic but it is $150. The shot will take place outside if that matters. This is out in the country so I am not really concerned about city noise. Second, when setting sound levels for this setup, what should the output of the Sennheiser G3 be set to in order to get a good input to my Panasonic G4? Watch all you stuff on both channels. I have learned tons. Thank for all that you do. Houston

Hi Houston, On the affordable end, though I'm not sure it sounds as good as the ME2, there is the JK MicJ 044: amzn.to/2t9q0jO Sounds pretty good though its build quality isn't quite to the same standards as the ME2. The G3 produces a pretty hot signal and the GH4's input has a pretty narrow gain range. I usually ended up setting the GH4 at -12dB which is its lowest setting and adjusting the input gain on the G3 so that the peaks hit between -20 and -12 on the GH4. Good luck!

Hey Curtis, I have a Tascsm DR60D MK II. I wanna upgrade to the Sound Devices Mix Pre 3. The Tascam is freaking awesome if the levels are set perfectly and I'm smart enough to use a dual track recording at about a -12db level. But if my subject sings so loud I still can get distortion. Here's my thinking (correct me if I'm wrong). I'm getting distortion because my subject is exceeding my levels regardless. Then once the digital limiters kick in on the Tascam they simply keep the distorted audio at a lower level instead of preventing it. The Mix Pre 3's analogue limiters can rescue me from this distortion in a subtler/ more effective way by reducing the input levels and preventing distortion. This would allow me to focus on my subject intestead of my audio. How's my thinking?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Hi David, pretty good thinking but with one recommendation. The MixPre's preamplifier has so little self noise, that you'll want to reduce the gain so that the peaks are hitting more in the -24 to -18dB range. Then you can normalize to higher levels in post. You want to leave plenty of headroom so that when the really loud singing kicks in, you're only hitting the limiters very occasionally for the most transparent sound. And because the preamps have so little self noise, there's no need to run the input levels so hot at -12dB. I hope that makes sense. Good luck!
@DavidGriffin
@DavidGriffin 6 лет назад
@@curtisjudd that totally makes sense. I use the cheap AudioTechnica AT875R. It comes in super hot, but doesn't grab the low end so much. I wish they made a $300.00 single input Mix Pre 1. Lol. I'd buy 2 of them! One 1/8 Jack and one XLR Jack. Only one used at a time. I'd still buy it. I get you about the settings. Keep the gain low cause the Mix Pre 3 is ULTRA LOW NOISE... Normalize it all in post since there won't be much noise that gets amplified from the Mix Pre 3 (the mic... That's another story about noise).

@LearnLightAndSoundSessions
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions 6 лет назад
Hi Linus, I will confess that I always record audio separate from the camera so I don't attach the MixPre and camera. Battery access is part of the reason for this but the main reason is that I prefer the audio quality of recording just to the audio recorder and then sync in post. That said, a camera cage for the camera would allow one to attache the recorder on a friction arm to position it off to the side if you wanted to go that route. Best of luck!

Hi FloEvans, A bit of noise is usually easier to manage than clipped/distorted peaks. There's a balancing act for sure, but clipping is tougher to fix. The output on the MixPre is technically a fader that attenuates the level from what I can tell.

My sense is that the most common scenarios for this are jobs where the production wants a simple post workflow free of syncing and RU-vid or other informal creators who need/want to keep the workflow simple at the very small sound quality cost. For me, I only do it when the production requires it. This happens a fair bit in corporate video where turn-around time and cost is more important than the most pristine quality.

i am not employing the mixpre but rather the zoom f4. there seems to be some complicating issue about whether the tone sent from the zoom is line level of mic. are you aware of this controversy? it is my understanding that if the tone was sent out as line level, the setup between camera and the zoom f4 would be similar to your vid. but what would happen if the tone sent from the zoom f4 would be at mic level? from another website: "A bigger problem is its slate tone. According to page 118 of the user manual: The MAIN OUT 1/2 and SUB OUT 1/2 faders do not affect the level of the slate tone. This is not good. One of the main purposes of slate tone is to use it to adjust the audio levels of other equipment you connect. For example, if the main XLR outputs of the Zoom F4 are connected to a breakaway cable, and that cable is connected to the audio inputs of the main camera of a shoot, you cannot use the slate tone on the F4 to adjust the audio input levels on the camera. Simply put, the volume level of the slate tone on the F4 should match the volume level of the Main Outputs. The way the Zoom F4 is now, you would need to plug a tone generator, like the Shure A15TG, into one of its inputs and use it as a slate tone to set the levels of cameras and other equipment you attach." I apologize for the way too long post but i wanted to properly explain the problem. can you see a better work around to set levels other than a tone generator? can i take the audio from the interviewee and set levels or even a crew member and by pass using the slate? as always, thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.

Interesting. Are you using the 3.5mm output or the XLR balanced outputs? Hi Curtis. Am using the Marantz PDM 602A with GH5. No tone send on Marantz, but set voice level to -12 on Marantz (gain switch on hi, level 3.5). When I plug into the GH5 the bars on the camera immediately jump to -22 db on camera bars (quiet room/room tone). Speaking into mic at -12 level (on Marantz), camera bars go into the red. To get camera levels down to ca. -12, I must turn Marantz output level to 1. I'm not using an attenuating cable (culprit?). If I set gain on Marantz to low, same discrepancy (with different level setting). I've heard others (including J. Cook below?) finding GH5 audio to be hot, or not well matched with external pre-amps. Other (most users) seem to be doing fine. Will I resolve this with atten cable, or is there perhaps an issue with GH5 audio? (Using Senni ME66) Thanks in advance. We're all glad you're here! : )

In my testing the output level of the Marantz PMD 602A was 1Vrms (or 0dBV) when the meter displays 0. That's hotter than consumer line-level (-10dBV) and just a whisker under pro line-level. So yes, it's not really a microphone level output by any normal definition - hence the need for an attenuating cable when using it with a mic level input. It's an odd design choice, to be sure.

If I get tone to -20db on mixpre3 and get it to the same on the GH5 using your method (which is the standard method anyway), then once I turn tone off and test it with just my voice speaking loudly, I'm getting into that same level zone on the mixpre, but nowhere near as high on the camera. To get the camera levels to be hitting -20db on average, I have to turn the output gain on the mixpre up very significantly. Like to -10 or so. Does that sound right?

Hmm, no. Are you assessing the levels with the camera's meter or looking at the waveform in post in a DAW app? I would not put too much faith in the GH5 meters. Not sure this is what you're experiencing but is the first thing that comes to mind. So in short, I'm wondering if the GH5 meter ballistics are too fast or slow to show where the peaks actually are with discontinuous sound like voice.

Thanks. Even if I just hold a loud tone with my voice, it registers very differently on the cam than the mixpre. The bottom line is that if I want high enough levels on the camera so that they don't need to be raised significantly in post, then I need my output gain pretty high. Oh well. It's fine and the results are fine. Just a bit disappointing the traditional level matching techniques using tone are not giving me predictable results.

I have exactly the same problem with GH5 and Tascam 701D. Not with the 7D II and the Tascam 701D though. Is the problem the same as described at 5.40 into this video (we need a special cable for the GH cameras)? : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uSjh1aiLARQ.html.

It seems the issue bokehmedia is experiencing has to do with interference that is introduced when the camera and recorder are connected via a 1/4" screw on top of the recorder. Perhaps a grounding issue. Using an attenuation cable would not fix this, unfortunately.

Hi Curtis, a bit late now but a couple of further questions about linking the MixPre3 to a Pansonic camera. I have a Panasonic Lumix FZ2000 Bridge Camera, set up as you suggest. The audio recorded to camera via the MixPre3 is fine UNTIL I plug in the HDMI cable to record TC synch to the MixPre - then the audio recorded by the camera has a rapid ticking noise in the background but the audio recorded on the MixPre3 is fine. This ticking on the camera recording does not go away if I detach the camera from the MixPre. It does not seem to be ground loop noise as such - it sounds like a regular rapid ticking (like Timecode pulse ?) But it is still there if I switch off Time Code in the camera. Do you get a low level ticking noise on your camera audio with your GH5 set up when you connect an HDMI cable to the MixPre? (if you always use the MixPre TC audio then you may not have noticed). Also, the record trigger will not work with the FZ2000 if TimeCode is set to Continuous Run (as recommended for the GH4/5 on the SoundDevices web site). But it does work if I set Time Code to Record Run. Which setting do you use ? Seems odd if Panasonic have implemented the TC Trigger differently - unless SoundDevices have made a mistake in the wording on their web site? Many thanks for your excellent videos. Chris North(UK)

Hi, I haven't ever connected both the HDMI and audio output at the same time to/from camera at the same time. Interesting find. Probably worth contacting SD support if you haven't already. It is a somewhat unusual configuration but I would guess you're doing to have a backup recorded to the MixPre?
@DelcanAV
@DelcanAV 7 лет назад
Hi Curtis, thanks for that. I thought it would be fairly normal to record primary audio on the MixPre and output the MixPre audio to the camera - so one could then use the audio on the camera card if good enough or post synch from the MixPre recording for the optimum sound. I guess you generally don't record with HDMI TC code on the Mix Pre so your camera audio will be fine. I did raise the ticking problem with SoundDevices but they could not explain it. May be its poor implementation on my FZ2000 camera ! The Lumix FZ2000 is not listed as tested and compatible with the MixPre on the SD web site but it is good to know that it does output TC to the MixPre AND will trigger the MixPre to record IF the camera TC is set to RECORD RUN. The only issue is the ticking on the camera audio when HDMI is connected. Many thanks for your response. Chris N. (UK)

Hi Prince, it requires good headphones, good speakers, and good digital to analogue converters to tell differences like that. They’re there but one must ask whether their audience is likely to notice and whether that’s important for the work you’re producing. I think with good skills, one could make great recordings with either one.

Hi Curtis, I always enjoy your videos - so clear and helpful. Just a question on this one - the mic socket on the camera delivers a low voltage (3v) to drive lapel mics. I usually use a cable with a 47uF capacitor when connecting a battery powered hand held mic directly to the camera mics 3.5mm input to prevent the voltage going back to the mic. Should we use a similar cable to stop the camera 3v going back down the cable to the MixPre ? Or does this 'short out' harmlessly ? Any thoughts or advice ? Chris N (UK)

Hi Chris, the MixPre is designed to manage this so no need to use a capacitor.

Thanks Curtis for your prompt reply. I thought there would be some sort of protection but didn't want to risk anything with the new MixPre. I'll get it plugged up today.

This is confusing Curtis. What are you doing on the side of the MixPre? we can't see. Also you show how to get -20db on both camera and mixer but don't explain how that relationship works when we adjust the input gain and output volume knobs. For example If you set the output volume at a certain level does that affect the TONE going to the camera and does the input gain affect the TONE? Not quite sure how this all works. Maybe a better explanation of how the input gain and output volume is set up and then all the other stuff.

Hi John, first, let me explain the high level goal and then answer your specific questions. The purpose of calibrating the camera and recorder is so that you do NOT have to worry about or change the output level of the recorder during the shoot. You can simply make any trim or fader adjustments on the sound recorder/mixer without worry of overloading the camera audio inputs. On the side of the mix pre, I use the menu settings knob to change whatever setting we're currently adjusting. You can see the changes reflected on the MixPre's screen. Calibrating the camera and audio mix to -20dB ensures that you will not (and SHOULD NOT) adjust the output level on the recorder once you have the camera and audio mixer calibrated at -20dB. So if you increase the input level on your audio recorder during the recording, the level on your recorder and your camera should increase in tandem. As long as you do not clip on the audio recorder, you should not clip on the camera. That is the whole idea behind this process of calibration. The tone level sent from the audio mixer is set in the recorder's menu and is not affected by the trim or fader levels you set for any of the microphone channels. I hope that makes more sense.

You said to turn Tone ON to send the signal to the camera...right... after you did the settings you shut it off again. Is the Tone "on" only to set up but not have it on while recording?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 лет назад
Correct, tone is only on during setup. If you leave it on during recording, you will record a tone rather than the sound you're trying to record.

Hello Curtis, thanks for your helpful work! I'm a GH5 and NTG3 owner searching for a good audio solution for solo shooting a documentary movie about a musical production. I'll work handheld without a cage. Could you recommend me the mixpre in a bag with spiral cables to- and from the Gh5? Secondly I'm a bit worried about wrecking my GH5 mic input with the line signal. Don't I need an attenuator cable? As well when I'm capturing audio from the headphones's out of a H4nPro? Cheers, Christoph
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions
@LearnLightAndSoundSessions 4 года назад
Hi Sergej, sure, spiral cables should work though I don’t have any specific cables to recommend. You do NOT need an attenuator from the MixPre as it has an output fader which allows you to send a mic level signal as demonstrated here. With the H4n you will need an attenuator cable. Best wishes!

@@LearnLightAndSoundSessions Thanks, Curtis for answering that promptly! As a solo shooter doing sound on my own with lots of unpredictable sources (people talking, singing, whispering, music playing loudly, playback, whatsoever), do you think an "old" mixpre6 fits for my purpose or do I need a 32bit float mixpre II model?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 года назад
@@verygrandpa I think it depends. If you are going to feed all audio to camera, then the original version should be fine. 32-bit is more useful when you're recording things which your camera will not have the dynamic range to handle. So while the MixPre II can handle most extreme dynamic range situations, output from the MixPre to camera can still clip or be severely limited by the output limiter.
