Indeed. Jack White doesn't use his plastic guitar anymore. And, even back when he did, he ran it into some very expensive vintage amplifiers.

He primarily used old sears fulltone amps they were cheap off brand amps when they were out but now those things are hard to find and expensive af when you do!

Bronson Carder even 15 years ago those sears amps were cheap. Cause they’re junk. Same as the guitars. Just go to a used guitar shop and buy anything under 300. The modern equivalent is a fender hot rod deluxe.

Gretsch was definitely the right choice. He's got the few famous vintage guitars and the Tele he uses for the Solo albums, but the majority of his stage guitars are Gretsch. (Multiple custom double-cuts, multiple custom acoustics, and a Billy-Bo) Totally nailed the Blue Orchid tone, well done!

Best thing about "It Might Get Loud" was Jack and The Edge's faces when Jimmy starts playing Whole Lotta Love. Like kids meeting their hero.

Nope dude. The best thing about the movie was that moment when Jack started to play and the Edge looked at him with a mix of admiration, respect and jealousy in his eyes. All Jack needs to play is a piece of wood, at the same time the Edge was pictured with a big ass stack of shit. That moment for me is showing the gap between scale of talent of those two guys, and is best remembered from entire movie.

+isaac marinero they can use the Cort Matt Bellamy signature if they stock it, then use like a Marshall or Blackstar amp for like the heavy riffs like Black Hole, then they can use a Digitech Whammy and a Fuzz pedal for the Plug in Baby intro. I think they could do that on a budget imo.

+Tom Clements Have to admit my entire knowledge of Biffy Clyro is that they have a logo that's on the front of the headstock on my guitar, and they have a guitarist name Simon Neil whose signature is on the back of the headstock. Just happens that this was the best Strat that I could squeeze into my limited budget. As guitarists, David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler are far more to my taste, which might explain why the Metal Zone--and indeed any pedal with the word Metal in the name--didn't make my list of the top 1000 guitar pedals :)

that was awesome, thanks a lot guys! i think a good thing for this setup though would be the *germanium big muff*, since it has a nice bias knob that nails the "dying battery" effect he sometimes uses (ie the solo from "you don't know what love is"). love that pedal. sounds so rough, looks so mastodon... one day, one day...

+Robstafarian The Royal Blood player uses tuner pedals to cut amps live. Don't really know why he doesn't just get an ABY but his choice and quite a bit cheaper than most decent ABY pedals. The BOSS TU-3 to be exact though. At least I can only presume that's why he included the tuner in the list. I think Royal Blood would be just barely doable though you'd definitely have somewhat mediocre guitars/amps, especially as you'd have to go combo for both of them most likely.

All Jack White ever used in the White Stripes days was a vintage Supro he got for $100, A vintage Kay hollow body he got for free from a charity shop, various vintage fender amps, a big muff pedal and a digitech whammy. £1500 might be extravagant for a Jack White set up - the gear he used to record the first WS album probably cost less than 1500 quid!

Nice job here mates, sounds really close. just one tip for White´s lead tones, he actually uses a micro amp pedal but before the big muff so when he kicks it in it overloads the muff and gives you that signature hard gated broken fuzz sound. give that a try and you´ll hear the results. Cheers.

I do these tones using a JHS muffuletta, Airis effects Savage OD and EHX Pitchfork...quite nice especially using the JHS muff setting which is a bit more growly. nice vid lads.

+Russ Barrack well, I think the budget they set is so they can put together a reasonably gig-worthy rig; you'd be pretty lucky to get a reliable guitar and loud enough amp for 750 and still have money left for any pedals you need

I can kind of understand what you mean. But in the modern day. Getting a guitar, amp and pedals that aren't complete shit isn't doable for £750 man. Unfortunately those days are long gone, I think you'll find £1500 to be a stunning budget for a full rig. I'd certainly be happy with any of the rigs we've done at £1500

+Russ Barrack That's why they didn't call it "Sound like... on a budget". £1500 is pretty damn cheap for a full gig-worthy rig. Also bear in mind they have to do it all with brand new gear, which is obviously more expensive than buying pre-owned. Even buying second hand, you would struggle to get a decent rig for £750, especially when you also include any pedals.

I don't count guitars and amps as part of a rig, because I see them more of a necessity that can be used in any rig. But I wouldn't want to sound 100% like any artist, so even if I used a different guitar, I wouldn't buy a new one just to sound exactly like someone else.

Top tip for anyone going for white's sound, scoop the mids have a fair bit of Bass and treble depending on the amp, if you don't have a boost like the MXR use a bit more gain on the amp, you can turn down the guitar volume to clean things up a bit, with the big muff or other fuzz pedals dont turn the tone too high let the treble on the amp add that crunchy edge to the tone, this seems to tick the right boxes for me and really is the right tone to add a whammy too its a pretty unique tone you get.

I think to squeze this into a tighter budget, the amp choice would've been a Fender Super Champ X2, just take the blind leap of faith & trust that the amp sims that Fender did, give the budget amp more versatility for the JW sound. And even really going low ball for a budget for the amp, go with the solid state Champion 20/40/100 instead of the Tweed. Either Fender amp has the Tweed for an option, but you'll also get the 65 Twin Reverb sim.

The single coil guitar is key in this rig as it adds much more clarity to the tone when using the POG/MUFF combo. Great vid guys. It'd be super cool to see you guys do a video on Kevin Parker/Tame Impala. That purple vibrato is not exactly cheap and would be great to find out if there are any cheaper alternatives out there.

Hey dudes, loved this demo!! You should try to sound like Jon fratelli of the fratellis... He uses mostly a clean, country esque tone, but the lead tones are really odd haha :D

For his tone with Blue Orchid run your guitar through a Spider-3 amp with the green metal setting, and use a Boss OC-3. Clicking it on and off. The old CKY trick. It sounds pretty spot on.

I'm actually glad there is no store. More time to hear the gear, plus i like the back and forth jabber jawing between the two. The store was nice, but not needed.
