So. Much. Crying. (From me and Jim, lol) I sniffled throughout the whole dang thing in between eating my chocolate clusters. It's an amazing story and when you look up the REAL story it's STILL amazing. Ballarad truly, truly is a hero who did amazing things. For the past few years it seems like society is crumbling and everyone sucks, their priorities are wack and no one is aligned anymore... so it was really great to be reminded there are still good people in the world. To be reminded people still care about the right things. To see people think children should be protected. What a crazy world we live in that there are some (lots) who don't think that anymore....
@hardcutreviews
@hardcutreviews Год назад
Yeah, we went into the movie blind not knowing who he was. Made for a much more tense viewing experience not knowing where the story was going or what he was going to do. We were skeptical going in thinking it might have a little too much propaganda in it and there was really very little of that. Anyone coming out so strongly against this movie's core message about protecting kids from diddlers is a little concerning.

The more I learn about Ballard the more I’m in awe. He’s a living breathing legend. He rescued a brother and sister from Haiti and adopted them into his family. The way he relays the story makes it ever so apparent he doesn’t credit himself but lifts these children up as the heroes. And although it’s somewhat controversial to the world these days, he draws strength through faith in impossible situations to pull off miracles. This is a selfless man.

This movie was pretty awesome. It had a very global feel with some really great action and some very powerful quiet moments. There was grit, and heart, and amazing acting from MOST (the wife was absolutely freakin' horrible). There were definitely some scenes in the movie (usually to do with his family and boss) where I thought maybe they used a B Team to shoot it? Felt awkward and too brightly lit like a Hallmark movie. Aaand here were like 2 or 3 cringe lines. But I can forgive all of that!!! It was a breath of fresh air compared to all of the toxic fumes Hollywood has been pumping out since what feels like forever now

Funny that a movie once owned by Disney that they let rot on the shelf is now 'right wing' - would it have been so if Disney released it? Some of the industry sweat I think comes from a feeling of threat the the movie got out and was funded and distributed outside of the normal corporate channels. Losing control never feels good.
@hardcutreviews
@hardcutreviews Год назад
Exactly. Word of mouth is only good when it's one of their films. If Disney had released this film you'd be seeing a lot of people praising Disney for releasing something good for a change. If enough people can spread the word and unseat their precious Indiana Jones release in it's opening week, I'd be sweating too.

You guys bagged on Vampiro (Bill Camp) being "the whitest guy" portraying a cartel honcho. What you should have done it paid attention. He was a finance guy from the U.S. who got caught up on the business end of all kinds of crime, got pulled into the cartel world, and found himself supporting every kind of evil. The character is a white guy, because he's an American. No, the rescue of the sister was not portrayed "beat for beat" as what happened in real life, but it wasn't terribly far off, and what Tim Ballard did for the first several years of Operation Underground Railroad is very much in line with what is on the screen for this movie. He was an undercover operative for HS for 12 years, knew exactly how to infiltrate dangerous places, often as doctors or aid workers. That's all real. As for the merits of the movie on its own, the acting is amazing, the dialogue is compelling, the pacing is steady, keeping you engaged from start to finish, and the musical score is wonderful. I sincerely hope that those two children never act again. Not because they weren't awesome, they were, but to keep them away from the actual purveyors of exactly what this movie's message is about. Hollywood IS the breeding ground for a major segment of the U.S. market for child exploitation. Politicians and big money people are another major segment. Wonder why the media and the left (I repeat myself) are against this message? The answer is obvious.
@hardcutreviews
@hardcutreviews Год назад
Sorry for not paying attention. We said in the review we didn’t dig into the true story and just watched the movie blind so we could judge it objectively. Bill Camp was slipping in and out of an accent at times so it wasn’t clear where the hell he was from. Any details that were left out of the movie were left out of this review because we weren’t reviewing the true events of what actually happened. Everyone we know telling us to go see this film didn’t say, read a book about the real guy first. We were very clear that we didn’t know the true story so if we got details about that wrong… ok?

Thanks for the review. I have seen it 6 times and about to see it at least once more this week (paid for it twice, but then renewed my Regal Unlimited pass just so I could go a lot more times without paying). I gave it a solid 7.5/10 my first time. But I found it got better each time I saw it. I found the use of sound and music (both score and source music or music supervision) to be standouts. And the acting across the board was top notch for me, with the two lead kids and Bill Camp as Vampiro as standouts. I now bump my rating up to 8.5/10. While it will likely never be one of my top favorites, I think it’s one of the most important movies I have ever seen. And I slightly disagree with you, after seeing it 6 times: I think it is a very artistic job from the director and those aspects standout more after multiple viewings. And it becomes more rewatchable the more I watch it. But to be fair to you guys, I didn’t think it was the first time I saw it. I just went back to add to the support of the movie (and paid for that second ticket). But it changed the movie for me. While the message of the movie was still prominent, it became more of just a good movie. And it is even more true after 6x.

There's nothing Hallmark or cheesy about this film. Autuer Alejandro Monteverde is embodying the type of virtuoso filmmaking one might expect from a prime inspired Spielberg in his sublimely evocative camera compositions - with the driven visceral naturalism of a 1980's Roland Joffe crusade. Cinematographer Gorka Gomez Andreu's work here is reminiscent of a Vilmos Zsigmond or Chris Menges. Writer/director Monteverde's own father and brother were kidnapped and murdered in Mexico, his artistry is soberly considered and sensitively nuanced - the moments of emphatically asserted dialogue are convicted. He's the real deal - unlike ordained industry entitled darlings such as Darren Aronofsky, Todd Field, Todd Haynes, Bryan Fuller, or Ryan Murphy - or any other silver spooned punk named Darren, Todd, Bryan or Ryan - who really ain't it. At all.
@hardcutreviews
@hardcutreviews Год назад
Yeah, I’d agree that 95% of it wasn’t Hallmark looking but just about every scene with Sorvino felt like it was 2nd unit taking the helm. Not just us either. Literally everyone we’ve discussed the film with. And you can name drop all you want but when I can see the haze machine working overtime in scenes where there shouldn’t be misty water vapor in the air, it takes me out of it a little. I do compliment the simplicity of the camerawork in scenes and how it let the focus land on the substance of the performances but it was too simple at times. The dialogue was not perfect. It felt forced in some parts and too on the nose. There was a lack of subtlety in some areas and it was painfully obvious. Just my 2 cents but I respect your opinion. It’s a well-crafted film.

The reason why the children actors in this movie are so good is, because they actually play real children who act like real children. They are not geniuses, adventurers, "the key to everything" or magicaly wise. What this movie does better than any other movie or even documentary or news story about this topic is how respectful it treats the children. There is no voyeurism at all and you can tell everybody who worked on this movie cared deeply about the children and did not want to exploid them in any way.

Thanks for doing a review focusing on the merits of the film rather than the political views of its main star. Sure, one can always have the discussion about if it’s possible separating the art from the artist, and yes, while Jim Caviezel may be a great actor, he comes with a baggage that’s probably the reason for him not being as hired as much as he would’ve had he not pushed some QAnon theories. I’m sure the critics who bash this just for his casting are sharpening the knives for the upcoming Passion of the Christ sequel. 😅 I’ll give this movie a watch for sure, thanks again for your reviews, looking forward to seeing more! 👍🏻

Not sure what a film would look like that attempted to cover every single scandal in every institution in the U.S. all at once. No movie is going to be all things to all people. It’s based on a true story about one man’s experience and a singular event. If you want to watch a film about corruption in the Catholic Church, go watch Spotlight. That film doesn’t touch on anything in this story but it doesn’t make it any less impactful. But two things can be true at the same time. The filmmakers here may be turning an eye to other scandals but it doesn’t make this particular issue any less important. This film is no masterpiece but it gets its message across clearly. Some people held it up in extremely high regard and others laughed at it. At the end of the day, the more aware people are of all the darkness in the world the better we are at preventing it, no matter where it’s found.

Also, these people believe in shutting down our borders...even to the children who are trying to escape the activity depicted in the film? To me this is little different than a pundit who claims to be neutral, but almost always ONLY criticizes "libt ards," brings on conservative guests and almost NEVER criticizes their world view. Neither of us go in for the heavy theology. Saving trafficked children because it's the right thing to do doesn't need the added modifier of being a mission from above. Definitely get what you're saying though, and appreciate your perspective. The Lori Vallows and Ruby Frankes of the world are nut jobs and they're getting what they deserve. @@sid6856 Haha, appreciate that, dude. We’ll keep it going as long as we can. Eventually we want to hit classics and other content outside of just new releases. As we grow hopefully we can devote more time to the channel. One review at a time.

I feel like you guys did before I saw it. I felt like it was going to be a gloried infomercial on child sex trafficking and resisted seeing it when it first opened. Then I watched it two days ago and man, it had me misty throughout the film. You guys are entitled to your opinions but giving this a 7.5 is like giving the original Rocky a 7.5 right before it wins an Oscar and is recognized for being a cultural benchmark. I give this film an 11 out of 10 and the fact that like Rocky, was made on a shoestring budget, is sweeping the box office says it’s a solid 11 on a scale of 1-10. The only way this moving film won’t get Oscar gold is because the libtard commies shun it as they are the very people involved in trafficking kids. Especially Hollywood. The fact that AMC theaters is trying to stop people from seeing this earns this film an 11.

Can’t argue with you at all. Totally understand the 11/10 rating. If we were rating it on message alone it would be that for us as well. We just tried to step back and look at it from a craft standpoint and not just a movie with an important message. We really liked the film, don’t get me wrong. But we don’t want to make videos where we’re just dropping 10 out of 10s. Doesn’t leave room for discussions. Appreciate your opinion and comment, dude!
