A "dark horse" this week, and picking up steam. Sound of Freedom stars Jim Caviezel, and is based on the true story of Tim Ballard's sting operation against human traffickers. Here's my review of SOUND OF FREEDOM!
Not really, it makes sense why some people don't want to support a movie starring a dude that is very problematic. There are also better films out there that talk about human trafficking and the effects about it.
@@SlappyMcgeee it is about left vs right when it comes to disney holding the movie back 5 years with no intent of showing it or the leftist media calling it fascist.
@@SlappyMcgeeethe fact that you have to put a political side on whether it's wrong, or good to traffic children speaks volumes. This is beyond a left versus right thing, a Republican versus Democrat, this is human trafficking, I'm pretty sure the last thing on the minds of these people who were captured and sold off into slavery is whether or not they're going to be freed by a Republican or a Democrat, the fact is the minute people put aside their differences and realize the bigger picture, we can finally move forward but until thats.
It absolutely is about right and left. The left specifically wants to groom children. There are transexual men in schools giving lap dances to kids wearing Rainbow-flag t-shirts. Their LGBTQ allies said it themselves. "We are here, we are queer, we are coming for your children." it's right vs. left. Its good vs. evil. Destroy evil.
As a trauma therapist I've worked with many women who've survived being trafficked from a young age. This happens in our community and most people have no idea. Thank you for reviewing this and bringing attention to this movie that will help raise awareness to this very real & relevant issue. This review does so much good; thank you.

I've seen it before, at least 5 years ago, there's a movie where a little girl puts on her headphones and sings while we see shooting and screaming in the background.
Yes that is a neat shot to give you the girls POV. But a little more action would be nice but I get they don't want to turn this into taken with Liam Neeson kicking butt.
Indeed. It's great that the independent Christian-leaning film industry is stepping up their game in terms of filmmaking. I also liked the two symmetrical shots that bookended the movie.

It’s mostly because the lead actor is such an outspoken conspiracy theorist, most people think this movie is gonna be about Q-anon or something. Caviezel is so misguided, how could the movie NOT be misguided too? In other words, HE made it political. We didn’t. But after seeing this review, I think I’ll give it a shot. I’m just trying to explain why a lot of decent people don’t want to see this movie, that’s all.
@@precoius It’s not just that. Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad (the anti-trafficking organisation the movie is based around) are not great. They have frequently been caught embellishing stories, have claimed to help free a victim who testified that she freed herself, and use practices that can actually further endanger victims. They’ve been known to not give adequate support to victims of trafficking after rescue. In 2014 they filmed a raid in an effort to make a reality TV show out of the operations. It’s a pretty self-righteous organisation that doesn’t use safe methods of rescue. Trafficking is an incredibly serious issue that this movie does not portray accurately. It does not spread awareness, just misinformation about trafficking and O.U.R.’s practices. I can’t recommend giving money to this movie or the organisation. Hope this doesn’t come across that I’m annoyed at you personally, it’s just that this movie and organisation anger me.
I have to agree with @ionabab. And add in the fact that child trafficking is one of the biggest qanon focuses… let’s be clear NOBODY is arguing that child trafficking isn’t something worth focusing on, but considering how Qanon only focuses on child trafficking in the context of Hollywood and liberal elites (even to the point of blatantly falsehoods) and just brushes over all other cases of child trafficking, if not just completely dismissing them… especially in there Republican Party (looking at you, Matt Gaetz)… ide say there is substantial evidence to suggest that Qanons real focus is “destroying the libs” far more than any real worry about children or trafficking. I think it’s pretty evident the children are just sort of a convenient and compelling excuse to galvanize the Republican base who 1.does actually care about children/trafficking (to be clear… as we all should) and 2. Are not very political or politically motivated. It brings sort of right leaning, and extreme right groups together to “destroy the libs” but under the guise of “protecting the children”. And considering that’s Qanons m.o if you will, to deceive the masses using in part stories about trafficked children to further a political goal…. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for virtually anyone who’s not inclined to fall for Qanons deception to kinda draw the seemingly in normal circumstances abstract points together. Does that mean that you can never seperate the person from the artist? No ofcourse you can in a lot of cases. But when that artist has consistently used his art to scam people it’s a little difficult to think his next art piece is all above board and is not being done for the purpose of the scam. Make sense?
@@ionabab7274 Seriously? This is like saying we should not watch any movie that shows the US military because they invaded Iraq under false pretence etc. It’s a nonsensical argument because for all of that questionable stuff, they have also done good and saved lives. Also, it’s not like this self-righteous acting can be exclusively identified with this particular organization. Almost every organization, including all levels of government spare no efforts in trying to look good by virtue signalling. So when you say stuff like in your comment, most people will start to wonder if you following some consistent principle or merely just being arbitrary due to an unreasonable hatred.
Saw this movie last night. Definitely shook up everyone in the theater. At the end of the movie, no one stood up, no one talked, no one went on their phones; it was just silent contemplation. I've never been in a theater where so many people were touched by one simple movie. The message needs to be heard and this movie does a perfect job of doing that.

As someone raised in church, and as the child of pastors, I've been very critical of the "Christian movie" tropes and the pandering many of those films do to the middle-aged church mom crowd. This film and other projects done by Angel Studios are legitimately good while being "Christian". Those don't have to be mutually exclusive
Angel didn’t make this. Fox did. It was indeed Christian though, but Angel just bought the rights from Disney. Which is still mad props: without them, we wouldn’t see it, just not because they made it.
@disguisedcentennial835 from what I understand, Angel studios made it under Fox. When Fox was bought by Disney, Disney didn't release it. So Angel had to buy back the rights and find a new distributor
Back in the late 80's I worked as a hospital volunteer on a rape crisis hotline. We had so many child cases we developed a comprehensive treatment center for sexually abused children. I met children and police, in the Emergency Room, went to court as an advocate with children as young a 4 yrs old, who had to testify against their abusers in front of them. We worked with Law Enforcement in many ways, and helped with a necessary task force to address Satanic Ritual abuse of children. Etc Etc Etc. I love this movie, everyone who supported it, and Tim is a genuine real life hero. In our experience in the 80's we encouraged all involved in the rescue, prosecution and after care. to pray for help and protection..that is reality too. Thank you for reviewing the movie...that Disney bought from Fox and shelved for 5 yrs (that speaks for itself, doesn't it.) and the original producers fought Disney to win the rights to it back, and then (Angel Studio) agreed to present it in every possible venue. I’m from Colombia and I was willing to give this one to them. They finally portrayed Colombia’s diverse geography and lifestyles between regions. They even emphasize it with one of Bill Camp’s lines. Life is very different in sunny hot Caribbean touristy Cartagena than it is from the eternally overcast, chilly, business and government oriented high altitude Bogotá, and that in turn is extremely different from the mountainous but extremely hot and humid jungle of the southwest near the border with Ecuador which makes from an impenetrable fortress for the guerrillas (Unlike the eastern and Amazon jungles which are mostly flat and armed forces can patrol using tech like FLIR), and depicting correctly how now the guerrillas now are the drug production lords. Having said that, the story gets way convoluted and unrealistic trying to link the events in the jungle with Cartagena the way they did. It just does a big disservice to what they’re trying to shine a light on, and back to square one making Colombia a little village again. The inclusion of regional map instead of a national one I think was an afterthought to obscure how far and disconnected the Putumayo region is from Cartagena. Think of anyplace on the Caribbean region, even south Florida and it will be easier to get to from Cartagena than going to the Putumayo region, even getting through the Andes mountains to the Ocean from Putumayo will land you in the southernmost part of Colombia’s Pacific coast, while Cartagena is on the Northern Coast in the Atlantic! Also land connection is nonexistent, not even the rivers connect since the Putumayo continues towards Brazil! So this petty guerrilla leader in the middle of the jungle has his s*x slaves flown in from 600 miles away A-La Epstein?? I know crime is interconnected, just not in this way. Not also that, but the story that takes place in the jungle is straight out of La-la-land, I wouldn’t have a problem with that if this was just fiction, but they decided to join events based on a true story with a pure fantasy one, which takes you off the seriousness of the topic.

I mean at 14m budget it's not like this is a SUPER small movie But also, yeah, I love Jeremy's reviews of movies that fit in this 10-20m budget category, there seems to be a couple of movies like this every year
@@1234dragonskyit’s a movie that Hollywood really didn’t want made, and it had very little promotion. And I haven’t seen the numbers, but I’ve heard it’s performing much better than the new Indiana Jones movie. It’s success is nothing short of a miracle, and I think it says more about what the audience is hungry for than anything.
@@turbonerd3075 "nothing short of a miracle" it is a faith based movie made for white Christian people. You fuckers will see anything if feeds your agenda.
Caviezel is no stranger to the brooding hero. He starred essentially that in five seasons of Person of Interest. A show very prophetic in this age of AI.
Definitely a must see. It's a shame that this movie was made 5 years ago and Disney mothballed it. So glad that the studio was able to buy it back from them and get it out.
@@whatevergoesforme5129and they're still in denial claiming it's not a political issue when they themselves politicized it by, I dunno, coming for our children?
Hey just wanted to say, you are a real one brother, many RU-vidrs are avoiding this movie but you didn't, I just wanted to say I appreciate you bro, keep doing what you do 👍
Why would they review a movie that didn’t tackle the issue correctly, left out important information on how children are not even the majority of human trafficking cases and the fact that human trafficking happen more in the US than any other country on the planet, tried to say the bad guy in the movie was convicted for trafficking when in reality he was convicted for child porn, had no actual victims or experts who know how human trafficking works to help them out on the movie to get shit right, propped up and absolute dick bag of a human being who was literally found out to be a child abuser and was kicked out of OUR, and last but not least was literally made for Conservative Christian propaganda that profits off of actual victims. You sir are just a simpleton who is blinded by this movie because it pulled on your emotions. If you call me a groomer for daring to speak my mind about this dogshit movie then you need to seek therapy for your issues. Seems to me your compliance against actual victims speaks more volumes than anyone here.
Saw this movie last. As the credits rolled I just sat in stunned silence. I was seething throughout the film that anyone could be so cruel and disgusting to children. I could hear people in my theater breaking down into tears. Whether you’re religious or not, “Gods children are not for sale” is so powerful. Edit: I also loved Bill Camps character. He brought an appropriate amount of light-heartedness to the movie while also understanding the severity of the situation.
Those of us who have been trying to call attention to this horrendous fact of reality for 40 years and hearing it dismissed as "false accusations!" "satanic panic!!" "conspiracy theory!!!" can hardly believe that someone has finally put together a treatment powerful enough to get the ostriches to pull their heads out of the sand and pay attention. Thanks and admiration to all involved. To the viewers: now you know what the reality is. Go out and do something about it.
it could simply be "children are not for sale", doesn't it? because, very sadly, there are very many religious nut jobs who think that if someone doesn't pray to 'their' god they are a lesser being and don't deserve the same human rights.
The story behind the production of this movie is hilarious. Was being held by Disney for ages and they were just sitting on it. Netflix and a few streaming services all pass on the film, which is already made by the way. Then some small company picks it up, releases it, and it outperforms Disney's new Indy film. Love it
That's not entirely correct. Angel Studios bought it BACK from Disney. They had sold it to Fox, then Disney bought Fox and wouldn't release the film. Insert conspiracy theory here, lol. I think it was because Caviezel was sort of blacklisted after The Passion. Disney being willing to sell it back shows that they didn't really care about the film much one way or another.
@@ams914which is weird, he had a successful TV show for that ran for many seasons called Person of Interest, completely secular and about artificial intelligence and vigilantes.
@@ams914 I am just glad they were able to buy it back and release it. Is the reason most people never heard of this movie until it popped up in the theaters, Disney and friends did not want to be seen to begin with?
@@ccjl9160 He has a kind face and he is a great actor. I don't share his religion, but I can appreciate a great actor. Here's hoping Jim Caviezel gets more acting offers. 🙏
We've been talking about this movie all week over at Midnight's Edge as well as the history behind this movies production and how the media is trying to black out this release.
@@DuBstep115 I will watch Oppenheimer this weekend. I heard is amazing. I expect nothing lower than a 9.5/10. Sound of Freedom in my opinion is a solid 8.5/10.
Tim Ballard explains everything they do to help the kids after they are rescued! He & his wife adopted two of the children and they have people who take care of the kids and get them the physical & emotional help they need before they return them to their parents or into new homes! None of those children are released onto the street after they are rescued!
We all know why Jeremy (and a lot of us) didn’t hear about this movie. We all know why this movie, which was made back in FREAKIN 2018 hasn’t seen the light of day until now. (And almost didn’t see the light of day at all thanks to Disney buying Fox!) This world is FULL of evil, and we MUST combat it! Thank you for giving this movie the recognition it deserves, Jeremy!
Well said! Seriously what is wrong with Disney why are they so evil? They only push the woke stuff on kids but when it's something to protect them or anything about God they can't stand it
@@jesse1008 could've easily googled yourself, but fine. Wikipedia: "The film was completed in 2018 and a distribution deal was made with 20th Century Fox. However, that studio was purchased by the Walt Disney Company, which shelved the film. The filmmakers reportedly spent years trying to get the distribution rights back from Disney and take it to theaters"
This movie is the proof nothing beats word of mouth, in terms of marketing. 15M budget, almost nothing in marketing, 0 celebrities talking about it, and just in US, in it's first weekend + 4th July = 40M The movie is already in profit, and almost beat Indiana Jones, on half the theaters showing it
@@unanimousartsYeah, but Mel Gibson, crazy as he is, does not have the scratch that Disney has. The fact is, the new Indiana Jones was just a crappy movie.
@@Thrainite Maybe you're not old enough to recall, Mel got destroyed by mainstream media because of a drunk driving incident in which he called the cop a "joo". It was shocking, I say, SHOCKING! They've been calling him "crazy" ever since.
The point about not being graphic is actually quite important. Contrast that with Cuties, which got into huge problems because of how much was shown, and you have a good basis for discussing how to tackle subjects in a tasteful manner. You want your audience to be thinking about your message, not grossed out on a primal level.
The theater was the most busy it had been for a while. Everybody was so silent in the end of the movie, all I could hear was tears. Absolutely gut wrenching, amazing Film. Everybody needs to see it.
@@thedukeofchutney468 Well that's their fault. For putting so many good movies same days. But the theaters have been PACKED! it has been a great year for the audience!
is it heavy on the religous nutjob stuff or can one go see it without getting a sermon? The subject matter is serious and interesting and very important, but dont feel like all the nutjob white bearded in the sky with flipflops stuff
The sound of freedom is taken from one of their operations, not sure if it's the one in the film, but during one of the operations, after freeing the kids, all of the kids were cheering. Someone asked Tim if he heard that and told him it was the sound of freedom. So that's where the name of the film comes from. It must've really stuck with Tim and sounded like a good name for a film to them.
It’s not based on a real story. Tim admitted it’s an embellishment and a combination of stories AT BEST! There is a high likelihood these events never occurred at all as described and are a fabrication.
@@Tortle-Man that's fine. It's a movie, not a documentary lol I'm not sure which operation the movie is based on, but it makes since if it's like you said a combination of multiple ones. That's fine. Like I said, I wasn't sure if the moment he shared on how he got the name "The Sound of Freedom" was from the operation depicted in the film. Maybe it was a different one but he just liked the name and decided to use it for this movie. But yeah, it's a movie so it is designed to entertain an audience. If you want something that is 100% fact watch a documentary or read some of the reportings of the actual operations he's been a part of. These operations actually happened and have been covered by the news. Of course there are things that have been added in for the movie, both for entertainment purposes and because it may be difficult to remember everything that happened exactly as it was or everything that was said verbatim. They have to fill in more than two hours with a story that can probably be said in a few minutes. Idk why people say that like it's a criticism. Like, duh! It's a movie! Not a documentary! No one claimed it was a documentary. It is an action film based on real events.
@@Terryterryterryterryterry Uh huh. Did you know that some of these "operations" are war crimes? Like one depicted in the film, even. Posing as doctors? Yeah, that is banned by the Geneva Convention, and for good reason: it gets doctors killed. But Tim "gimme money and publicity" Ballard doesn't give two shits about that.
I had the privilege of meeting the real life Tim Ballard before the pandemic hit, and guys... he's awesome. He's an actual real life hero, and you can actually feel it when he walks into the room!
Good on him. Those of us who have put in time trying to create awareness of this activity know how hard and frustrating it is -- but he knows it on a whole other level. Thanks to him for all his work.
He’s fantastic and he’s doing interviews rn showing so much courage by calling out the Biden administration for encouraging this evil with their border policies
@@imanoldurango8213 His record appears to be very impressive! It's such a difficult area of investigation and he has all my admiration for his dedication to saving those victims.
Jeremy you’re my favorite reviewer. You should watch “The Chosen” from the same studio would like to see what you think of the script writing and cinematography from your perspective.
This, right here, Jeremy, is why you are my go-to movie critic. You get it exactly right and hit all the important points of this movie, its production, and the acting. Tim Ballard is a real-life hero, I have met him and live close by to where he lives so we see his family at the stores regularly. Jim Caviezel has been a hero of mine for a while now and Person of Interest was a great series. Thank you Jeremy for giving this movie the attention it deserves and, as you always do, giving it the treatment it deserves!
Many years ago I watched a The 700 Club episode. A recently new Christian, who was a tattoo artist wanting to witness to people was praying how can God use him. The FBI contacted him and asked if he would be willing to cover the bar codes sex trafficers use to "sell" their products. He jumped at the chance so one Thursday a month his shop closed and his team did beautiful coverup tattoos so these kids would not be reminded of their past. He also painted a tree in his shop and every kid that they did this too had the opportunity to leave their handprint on this tree. I hope he is still doing this. He was out of Chicago but I don’t remember the name of the shop or if the show even mentioned it.
@@ronryan7398Same here. What he’s doing is amazing, but it would be better that no child has to go through such horrors in their life in the first place.
Thank you for reviewing this film. You were very good and objective when you talked about it. I hope that people will watch this film and you made it possible for people to get interested. So thank you very much!
Its qanon filled and backed film with literal cultists who have financed it. The main actor has been spreading lies and crazy conspiracy theories literally akin to a liberal cabal that drinks babies blood as a fountain of youth. The movie is being used to spread these insane recycled tropes. These people are sick in the head. Especially using a real issue like child trafficking to spread qanon beliefs to others. Literal cultists helped finance this movie. The story is also not true. It is literally made up.
Saw it on Tuesday in a PACKED theater with people crying all over the place. The theater manager told me they added extra shows, so everyone who wants to can see it! PLEASE GO... it's SOOO worth it!
If you go for the message you will find it and is powerful... If you go for popcorn entertainment and production value...Surprisingly you will find it too.
I just saw it, and I was... underwhelmed. Perhaps because of the buzz it created of "Oh my God, you have to see this fillm. It's beautiful. It's moving. It's talks about child-trafficking", etc, I was expecting it to talk about the big landscape that is child-trafficking, and it does touch a bit on it. For a while. I think the movie's message got a bit lost when it became more about Ballard (Jim Caviezel) rescuing a pair of sibilings than rescuing children as a whole. The former is fine, in it of itself, but I think the movie oversold on the bigger subject matter, and it became too personal, thus left me underwhelmed. I agree with Jahns that the movie did a good job on not making the script political. It was about doing the right thing. That's great, but when there's too much political talk behind-the-scenes, especially with the actors and even Ballard himself, then that message gets obscured. How? In the end credits, Caviezel promotes a "special message" by saying that the movie is going to be the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" of human trafficking. I'm sorry, but that is a ridiculous comparison. If you to promote anti-human trafficking literature, that's fine, but when you're making that comparsion, you're overselling it. And then Tim Ballard goes on Fox News saying "Pedophiles are 'salivating' at the media outlet's ripping 'The Sound of Freedom'". Right because anytime you criticize a movie with some legitimate concerns, then you must be a pedophile. 🙄 Nuance is lost. So it's a competent film, it's a fine film. It's not the "wake up" kind of film that many people, particularly on the right, are saying. Give it a look, if you want, but it's more of a rental or streaming. It's not that special.
I thought this film was very passionate to tell the story of child trafficking, how they could get deceived into it (modeling agency) and how difficult the stings can be to rescue them. If you do delve into the story further you will find Tim Ballards' wife giving him support and strongly encouraging him to do this work. Also the fact that they provide aftercare centers or foster care homes, counseling, medical treatment for each child is very impressive and I am grateful for that.
I'm so freaking glad that you reviewed this movie. This is a movie that needs all the attention and publicity that it can get from as many reviewers as possible. Thank you for doing it. This is not a right or left political thing, as you said, this is about saving children in a world where child trafficking (and far more nefarious things as a part of that) is a BILLION dollar industry. It's sickening. So yes, give this as much exposure as humanly possible. Bravo Jeremy.
Actually, it is very much a "left" issue, as you're talking about powerless people being commodified for the purpose of pleasing people with power. It's something that doesn't have to exist but does due to how power works in our current world. As someone who is generally on the left, I despise human trafficking but realize that the only way it'll ever be dealt with is by dealing with both how powerful people think it's expected to exist in their circles and the incentive behind it.
@@peachypietro9980 No it's not, everyone should be against the abuse of children or using children in any exploitative capacity (that includes to push political agendas).
4:20 I think the fact that the movie wanted to be apolitical was why they cut the part where Glenn Beck financed much of his operation after he resigns. Yes, that did happen IRL, but had it been in the movie, I think it would have come off as politicized.
This movie hit me so frickin' hard. I cried in the beginning. I cried in the opening credits. I cried in every scene with Miguel and Rocio. I cried in the finale. Man. It was so deeply moving
