Sound system setup for two bands on one stage. This is a sound system setup for an outdoor event. We are using an A&H QU-16 console with RCF NX45-A for tops and a single Tannoy dual-18" sub powered with a QSC PLD 4.2 in parallel-bridged mode using all 4 channels of the amplifier.

I've had that power challenge myself. One particular venue has power pillars with only single-phase power, and this particular pillar had 6x 16A commando outlets (common here in the UK and Europe). Knowing we had only 16A feeds, we distributed the load among all the outlets, putting the FOH Mid/Highs and Monitors on one outlet, and the sub amp on it's own dedicated receptacle. Later in the show, we lost all the bottom end and noted the sub amp had cut out; when looking into it, we found that the current draw had popped one of the breakers. It turned out that instead of having the correct type and rating of breaker, all the outlets had only10A breakers. We were running 4x Dual 18" subwoofers, and as the headliner band had attracted more attendees than expected, we opened the throttle on the PA; we should have had plenty of power from the pillar, but with only 10A available, I'm not surprised we popped the breaker on the sub amp. After that rather embarrassing situation in front of 4500 attendees, we decided in future to hire a generator when working in that location.

We have only had power issues about 5 times over the past many years. Thanks for sharing your experience! Looks like it was a big issue. It is common to see undersized breakers at event locations... and this most always does cause issues. Good move to use a generator next time!

Nice show and neat setup. Just wondering: Are you not running any music in between change-overs and breaks?
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. Good question. Stage Left Audio does not provide the break music. However, if the band(s) or the event organizers want break music, they will provide the music and we will play it over the PA. In this video, there was break music (provided by one of the bands), but it was not played until about half way through the allotted time for the band change-over. Also, due to potential copyright issues, we normally do not include break music in the videos, unless the music is free of copyrights, or the music (lyrics and notes) belongs to one of the bands.

Great video and insight! Any thoughts on using a stage box and “d-snake” cable as opposed to analog snake? Thx 👍🏻
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your comment. We do have a digital snake, but for our Presonus consoles (no D-snake at the moment). With events similar to the one in this video (mostly outdoor events), we'll stay with analog due to the (sometimes) sporadic weather issues in NC, along with the amount of pedestrian traffic in and around the snake as well as the stage. We will use digital snakes for indoor events.

Thanks sir for the video. Here in Italy the Tannoy dual-18" is not imported. I think it is a fabulous sub. Strange that the total load of electrical current triggered the sub's protection. In total you should have an absorption of less than 1000 watts. At live events I have not had any situations of power failure. Just once in a mountain town. On to the next video
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
This was a classic case of not enough current. Thank you for your comment.
@dustinthiessen
@dustinthiessen 7 месяцев назад
@@stageleftaudio that's not exactly how current works.... the amplifier will draw as much current as it needs. IF the breaker cannot handle it, the breaker will trip. You may have had a low voltage situation, causing a spike in current draw.
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
Correct, no breaker was tripped, but there was a low (low enough) voltage at the sub amp, that caused the amp to "disable" itself. The sub amp never shut off, but self-protected itself (which required a power-off/on reset). There was probably 150' of 10ga electrical (1-feed) to the stage... the electrical setup for this show was not the best.

For the passive subs, yes; we use a driverack 260.

@robertaycock3251 7 месяцев назад
Thanks do you have separate controls over your subs and foh or is it all together? On one control
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
The only controls we have for the subs and mid/high speakers are the settings within the Driverack 260 (crossover setting, levels, high-pass and low-pass filtering). However, once the settings are setup, we rarely need to set them again during a show. Our only control for FOH is the main FOH fader.

10:04 - what is the reason to use splitter? Also it makes cable unbalanced.
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
The splitter sends the FOH signal to both FOH speakers at the same time. Another way of doing this would have been to daisy chain the signal from one FOH mid/high speaker to the other. Sometimes, it's easier to split the signal at the snake.
@user-vf7bl4uy2c

@@stageleftaudio same signal for left and right, no stereo??
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
Correct, same signal, no stereo. We do not run stereo sound, only mono. Nearly all concerts are actually mono, very few are in actual stereo. There's a physics reason for not running stereo.

Great Video as Always. I’m hoping you can help me out with something in regard to line level input to the NX45a. I recently purchased a set of NX45A speakers and own an Allen and heath QU16. Basically my question is, Where do you set your “volume control” on the RCF NX45a?
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for your comment. For the NX45A speakers, we set their volume control to the 3 o'clock position. For our other RCF speakers, their volume controls are set at the detent position (usually the 12 o'clock position).

I don't understand eliminate feedback manage ?
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 7 месяцев назад
Eliminating feedback starts with setting proper gain on the microphone (do not use too much gain). Next, is reducing the audio frequencies that are feeding back).

I love what you do. Do you find it hectic when a band is trying to set up right in the middle of your setup?
@stageleftaudio
@stageleftaudio 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your comment. Most of the time, it is not actually hectic. We communicate with the band that we need to have the stage first to get basic things setup and run; after that, the band can have the stage for their setup. During the time the band is setting up, we are setting mics, stands, drum-mics, monitors to accommodate how the band is setting up... in other words, when the band is setting up, we are working around the band to get them interfaced into our system. It's not too hectic. If the band was setting up at the same time we are trying to get basic things setup (snake, power, stringers, speakers, etc...) it would be very hectic!

Good eye. That is always our concern as well. We will not place the stands and speakers on a platform that we feel would not be able to support the weight or have other issues.

Do not forget... there's a lot of planning and decision making that goes on "behind-the-scenes" for every event we do... no matter the size or type of event. I do not narrate nor show these decisions on video (it's too boring and would make these videos too long). BEFORE you want to make a comment on our videos (or anyone's video) on how a setup is conducted, you will need to assess what you see on the video and apply critical-thinking to the entire setup. For example, how many subs do you see in the video?
