His vocals shred the paint off of walls. Soundgarden, behemoth sound that truly shook the foundation of rock to the core. Thank you for your reaction to this song. You’re awesome!
The 90s had SG, AIC, PJ, and somehow Nirvana, total zeros in comparison to the aforementioned, stole the spotlight while these other three were pushed to the side.
Chris Cornell was a force that changed the landscape of hard rock music then and will continue to do so, forever. His lyrics, his stage presence, his aura, his underrated guitar skills and most of all, his GIGANTIC voice, are characteristics that are rarely found in once person. To say that the world suffered a tremendous loss on May 18, 2017 is a serious understatement. Talent like Chris Cornell's cannot be replaced. People that understand the depth of his talents suffer the most.
At his vocal PEAK! How He can sing like THAT on the last song of the set is AMAZING! I saw this tour in Seattle and Wow! So Loud! RIP CC LOUD LOVE FOREVER
Chris was my favorite singer... of all time. I doubt anyone will come along to take his place. My favorite song of his is Wooden Jesus from Temple of the Dog. There is just something about his voice on that song that has stayed with me from day 1 until now.
YOU SAID IT SISTA !!!!.......One of Rock's ALL TIME GREATEST GROUPS, with one of the world's ALL TIME GREATEST ROCK SINGERS, singing one of the world's GREATEST ROCK SONGS, with one of Rock's SICKEST GUITAR SOLOs; and to think, I used to be a HIP HOP HEAD, but I'm all better now.
Unless you are a singer I don’t think someone could really comprehend how much force and control it takes to force a note out that powerful and high...so clean too. The best male singer ever hands down.
I subbed you b/c I thought this was fantastic! Chris Cornell was & will forever remain the undisputed greatest vocalist of rock/metal...of all time! He was the voice of my generation. We were but women & men walking amongst a true vocal god. He will forever sorely be missed. RIP Chris Cornell...excellent video by the way. I loved your reaction when the high notes kicked in!
Your reaction to Chris' wail is priceIess! I highly recommend experiencing the bliss of Soundgarden's "Overfloater", "Mind Riot", "Mailman", and "Limo Wreck."
He lost some of his range at the tail end of Soundgarden through Audioslave but he went back to a vocal coach and gained pretty much all of it back when he hired a coach. I saw him in 2014 and he crushed this song!
YES, he did say "Jesus is my friend." He would sing that phrase from time to time in his live shows. Just based on the culmination of listening to his lyrics over the years, I think Chris had a sort of love/hate relationship with religion, as do many others. In the song, YOUR SAVIOR, from the Temple of The Dog tribute album tells of his disdain for all those fake Christians out there who wanted to judge and prophetize over him. RIP Chris Cornell.❤ But his voice, at the time, was totally amazing. He did strain his vocal chords a few times, and as he got older he lost a few octaves, but that's okay, his voice was still amazing until the end.
jam1870utube "Jesus is my friend" is actually a 60s song, he was interpolating. He wasn't just saying it to be ironic. But he was raised Irish Catholic and based on stories he tolf from his childhood it wasn't pretty.
Chris had an extremely powerful voice. Not very many people sound like him and those that try almost always fail. God I love him. Rest in peace king Cornell lmao 💕💕
They were so young then, and you are right...it is hard to recognize Chris without the facial hair. Thanks for putting that up on RU-vid. One of the greatest rock voices of all time !
The audio sounds better! Songs you need to hear are Soundgarden - Birth Ritual or Jesus Christ Pose. Alice In Chains - Rotten Apple. Mother Love Bone - Chloe Dancer Crown of Thorns or Stargazer And come on girl react to TEMPLE OF THE DOG - Say Hello 2 Heaven or Times of Trouble 💜 were dying for it!
Angel Huerta All songs and bands are great, but if she is really into Chris Cornell's voice, she definetily have to listen to BIRTH RITUAL by SOUNDGARDEN. Greetings.
Ralph Dougherty You're right, that song is really intense and dark and the vocals also. There's a lot or versatility in Chris's voice in this song, you can also feel some anger on it. R.I.P Chris Cornell. Greetings.
I feel your appreciation for Chris's voice. If you don't know - He gave his best this night because it was a performance shortly after a close friend of his died just days before. Ironic as it is - Chris could have brought this to the stage every night if it were not for his addiction struggles. But such are our lives as flawed humans. God Bless you, Sister. Your sweet spirit is evident 👊🏻
Dude ... You're the best for reviewing. Thank you so much. This is probably my favorite live performance ever. Chris's voice is amazing. Rip Chris...we miss you.
You first paused it at the extremely most forever of all time worst possible moment! My face had to freeze with my HEAD THROWN BACK, FIST IN THE AIR, AND THEN,... (pause). I'm writing this in mid pause btw...
There is one of those songs by Soundgarden call Like Suicide from the Superunknown album. It is a very special and intense song, very powerful and it have a wonderful solo by Kim thayil, and special way of percussion by Matt Cameron, a great vibe by its Bassist Ben Shepherd and of course a great and unique display of voice by Chris Cornell. A very complete song, i highly recommend it to you. R.I.P Chris Cornell.
As a Baby Boomer (a little hint of how old I am) and HUGE fan of Soundgarden particularly Beyond the Wheel, Chris Cornell, may he Rest In Peace, was at his Vocal Peak! This is one Bad Ass Song!!! Ultra Omega OK is also a Bad Ass Album. Have a very happy day, from NYC🤟
Daniel Antunovic can you explain to me what you mean by this comment? I know what falsetto and timbre both mean. Maybe I'm having an airhead moment lol No sarcasm, just can't put it together what your point is. Thank you!
didnt think this comment would get so many likes so sorry for the late reply. What I mean is that usually falsetto has a very penetrating sort of quality and can make notes sound higher than what they actually are. If you know what falsetto is then you know for example what Matt Belamy of Muse uses on high notes is falsetto and he can get the wickedest sound that scorches the ear (especially with that almost forced falsetto he does towards the end of climax notes). Now to think that Chris could hit those same damn G5 notes that Matt does with his head voice and produce the same scorching sound (same timbre) is amazing, because usually head voice does not carry the same sharp timbre as falsetto. Through practice you can make the headvoice sound as sharp as a falsetto and make the vibrato as easy-flowing as well (falsetto makes vibrato much easier!). The added benefit is that the high notes hit with head voice also carry more power then the falsetto voice. This is what I meant and obviously Chris mastered the high notes in head voice and im sure a Chris Cornell cover of lets say supremacy would have been wicked! But it goes to show how staggeringly hard it is to emulate the falsetto sharpness with head voice is because even the young Chris in this video didnt appear to have that relaxed falsetto in those D5-F5 notes when singing in headvoice however I dont know if that was a stylistic decision plus the sheer power produced by his headvoice makes up for this. I can hit the F5 in headvoice but not nearly as sharply as Chris. Rip the vocal genius of our time.
This performance is just incredible.....and it's cool to see Jason Everman on bass during his brief period in SG (but also in Nirvana), he later served in the US Army.
Cornell at his best, back when he was singing metal. His solo stuff was good since HE sang it, BUT, he was best at singing metal, where you could hear his true range. His voice had balls and such range nobody else sounds like Chris Corenell.
Chris Cornell's vocal range was amazing! Congratulations on discovering the early 90's Seattle grunge scene! Great music and super talented individuals. Even though it is not grunge or metal, if you are into great guitar check out 'Summer Song' by Joe Satriani. I can play it in the dead of winter and feel the summer breeze on my face.
This is the raw, young version. Fantastic by all rights, but the re-release is a polished and amazingly mature version with reclaimed Soundgarden vocals (he claimed they played so loud he had to rise to the occasion).
ive watched most of your reactions now and love them. its great seeing someone discover and truly appreciate some of the music a lot of us 90s kids grew up with(!), and, ok im going make a suggestion: Jeff Buckley - Grace. he was actually friends with Chris Cornell, who wrote a song or two about him after Jeff died. most people only know him from his cover of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, which is ubiquitous at this point, but thats not who this guy was AT ALL-i think most people hear that song and think thats what you can expect from him-NOT TRUE. though hes steadily gaining fame (years after his passing) he might be the most criminally unappreciated musician of the 90s. the guy was just absurdly talented, and his style was so eclectic that its really hard to pin it down. he dabbled in everything from blues to classic rock to grunge. pls give this one a shot. (if you want a live version, the one from his mystery white boy tour is probably the strongest, but the bbc and npr versions are also solid.)
Listen to every version of this song you can find. There are many out there and each is special in it's own way. Then, start on "Fourth of July". Love your videos!
Far beyond the road Between your house and home There is a churning storm Of hailing burning bones Tiny baby cries Little, tiny pawn In the profit gain Tiny baby grows Mother, who's your man Is he doing what he can To make a proper home, home By overturning other stones, stones Father, mighty man Loves his little boys, boys Shows them how to kill To save his precious stones, stones Far beyond the wheel Spin your life around By driving flesh and blood Deep into the ground, ground Far beyond the wheel Steers life around By driving flesh and blood Deep into the ground, ground 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Toy Box - Soungarden or I Awake. There's no performance of Toy Box because it's an old outtake from their Screaming Life EP but I Awake has a performance from this same concert in Germany. Just shows how incredibly powerful and amazing his voice was.
I remember being surprised since I never requested this. Had me thankful more than anything that It's being heard, & Im not making anyone listlen to it :)
Nice delving into deep into their discography. You don't see too many reactions to their really early stuff. If you want good early stuff check out Head Injury, Loud Love, Hands All Over, All Your Lies and Incessant Mace. Keep up the good work.
Yes, he was saying "Jesus is my friend". Alot of people, usually those who really arent fans but hear a song or two on the radio, sometimes mistake some of their songs for blasphemy, so Cornell wants to outright state that thats not the case. In fact, the song is about a waging war in the 1800s in which a young man (young as an 12 or 13) is drafted and forced into battle.
I knew Chris, honey. I can tell you're not old enough to have been listening to this stuff back in the day, but I'm glad you're getting into it now. Chris used what's called a "forced falsetto" to hit those high notes. It's an INCREDIBLY hard thing to do, and it takes a lot of practice to perfect it like he did. And for the record, it's also HORRIBLE on your vocal chords. But, DAMN, don't it sound fucking AWESOME!!! Peace! :)
@@thankyou2532 Cornell was singing "Jesus is my friend" as a coda from the previous song in that live set - "I Awake". It just segued into "Beyond the Wheel". He would often add little vocal ad-libs here and there. In fact, eerily, at the very end of Soundgarden's set-closer from the night he died, he ad-libed with Led Zeppelin's "In my time of dying".
It's really clear in this song how much that early nineties Seattle sound owes to early seventies hard rock/heavy metal. Even his voice sounds like it's straight out of the early-mid seventies. Cool.
Cornell... RIP... this song released after his passing.. damn his octave range is a once in a lifetime experience...enjoy this song!! for real this is a benefit song he made that was released just after his death. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tEpwvvyrAJU.html I'm sure you all know it but I just have to do it.
That sums up it well "Chris was on a completely different level". I really like soundgardens more recent performances of this and other classics where they are dropped key (?), you can see how his skill has evolved over the years.
Trivium - Throes of Perdition, Avenged Sevenfold - Unholy Confessions, Amom Amarth - Guardians of Asgaard, Eluveitie - Thousandfold, Cellar Darling - Black Moon, Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde, Arch Enemy - The World Is Yours, all great songs you have to check out!!!!!!!
Great piece of song. A lot Doom on the instrumentals in contrast to the luminous and powerful Chris Cornell's Voice, a perfect and unique mixture. PD: you should listen to Birth Ritual by Soundgarden.
Oh my God...!! I'm just catching on to your video. LOL... Awsome. There's another video where the guitar so is better. I'd love to see your reaction to that one. Sure you'd love it.
