This vid really shows that a "professional" backyard studio is not out of reach financially! just gotta keep dreaming. Oh and side note... Your Wa-87 vid almost convinced me to get one, but I've decided to reach a lil deeper in my pockets and pick up the Chandler Limited TG Abbey Road Microphone. It's truly the ultimate swiss army knife Mic

I would love to soundproof, I live in a small village with skidoos, dogs and motorbikes etc. I have to take my mobile airstream studio out to side roads if I really want quiet, but can often get around with filtering etc..My building is a 170 year old barn, so I'm out of luck for any soundproofing.

Great to see someone that's followed the same path as myself. Everything in this video is very very similar to what I've done with my small 1 room studio in the backyard. I built it myself from the foundation up. Bloody hard & heavy work. Had to learn all the detail for building a soundproof structure then learn how to build it all to code..... It's been 2 years (in my spare time ) and I'm only now at the point where I'm deciding on treatment and placement. Also good to see this man has gone down the same route I have planned with GIK acoustics. It's almost exactly the same products I have on my list. I applaud this man's vision and determination. Building your own studio will take it's toll but it's extremely rewarding once you're out the other side (I hope).

Thanks for this Andrew. This is one of the few DIY soundproof (isolation) rooms that did it properly. I see so many people claiming to build "sound proof rooms", or "floating rooms" and they have done no such thing. This guy was able to do this, without floating the floor (which is INCREDIBLY expensive). But, good on him. He did great. I've read so much on studio building and acoustics, and have listened to many professional acousticians (shout out to Northward, Jens, Stuart on Gearslutz) and those guys know their stuff. Andrew, you should see acousticians having an argument or debate; it's one of the most beautiful, bewildering things to behold, I kid you not. And the way they insult each other, but so respectfully, it's beautiful man. I've heard acousticians say they will pay the money to fly another acousticians to their space, where they can bring their own gear and measurement equipment and test the other's claims. Truly hilarious, but also a marvel. The knowledge these guys have on acoustics is utterly humbling. Congrats Wilson. And a tip: Unless you really have the space for it, it's generally better and more efficient to record in an open, acoustically treated space, much like this one. Good stuff! Shout out to GIK Acoustics as well; excellent products and prices.

Great Vlog Andrew. My studio is a Green Retreat and I as I live in a residential area I opted for the soundproof 'pack' when it was being built - while not being completely soundproof it does significantly lower the db leakage etc. Nice space & top marks to Wilson for using GIK absorption (I have one of their complete room kits). Why the tiny screens though? Loads of space there for a 4K 60" job. Top marks again for the speaker stands - have them myself (The black ones - Ultimate Support 90/45B). Yamaha though? They'll have to be replaced. You can't mix on those. The Mini is known for having a few Bluetooth issues. I tried mounting mine in a Sonnet rack. Think the keyboard would connect? & it was really close. Logic Remote is quite useful if you can't afford a control surface but I'd always go for real faders (I have a 24 channel presonus which doubles as a control surface for Logic).

Thanks for all the advice here. To be honest my cash flow is not huge at the moment. I dug deep into saving for the build and looked at it as a savings. Gear on the other hand really doesn't appreciate in value, so I will have to save up for all the bells and whistles when the work picks up. I would love to learn more about your studio build and soundproofing. I am thinking about creating an online course, but am in the market research phase. Andrew Masters and Wilson Harwood just so you guys are aware, the reason that microtech gefell sounds so good is because it uses the actual original m7 capsule from Neumann that was used in the original u47's. Gefell is a company still owned by the actual Neumann family unlike Neumann who is owned by sennheiser. In WWII an allied bomb hit the Neumann factory and George said he wanted to get out of Berlin. He moved to Gefell and started a sister company. When Neumann was bought out by sennheiser he took the original capsule design with him and his gefell company. I own a u87 and a u47 and I still choose the gefells over them frequently. They are that good. Check it out. Pretty cool history there...

Big GIK Acoustics fan myself. It really would have been interesting to see a sound test with a live drummer. After all, you gotta admit, that would be the loudest dynamics you would ever encounter in a studio where you can't control the output while tracking.
@twtobin941
@twtobin941 3 года назад
I am also a GIK fan, my control room is full of it. And I agree, would be good to see how well his space keeps in the drums. I have a similar 2 wall design (plus raised floor and one more layer of material) and you can still hear the drums outside the house a bit. It's far enough from neighbours not to be a problem. But unless you have a true floating room with concrete outer shell it's impossible to keep all sound from escaping.

It's a great room! So it's sound proof, it's also acustically treated to a high standard. Does it get any better than that? For example how noticeable the difference would be between listening to music in your studio and for example in capital studio or abyroads? Second question if I only care about listening to music and will not be using such a room for anything else is it worth then using custom made acoustic panels that are let's say 20 inch thick and made of mineral wool to significantly eliminate reflections at even the lowest audible frequency level like between 20hz to 20khz. Would be grateful for an honest opinion approaching my question only from the theoretical point of view :)

Love the vibe! What’s the size of the studio? I am building one too, but it’s split for studio/man cAve. Also I would live to hear his work. Can’t find it on his site.

Wonderful space, and 50db reduction in the soundproofing is a fantastic achievement, but i strongly suspect that once you get decent monitoring, you will not be using the Samson and Studio Projects mics anymore !

Have you tried Line Audio CM4 mics? Also affordable.

If it’s air tight, then do the oxygen levels drop when you’re in there too long? Is there a risk that you fall asleep and run out of oxygen?

@@WilsonHarwood I have to ask and maybe I missed it. What did you do with the windows, anything special? I am looking at building an office that also will function as a sound isolating space for my drums. I’d like to have more windows but from what I read 1. They are hard to acoustically treat (flat, reflective) and very expensive to get in a way that isolated the transmission of lower frequencies. Thanks!

@@ADDG880 Yes, you will find the windows and doors to be some of the greatest challenges in soundproofing. I built my windows from scratch. Keep in mind though that you cannot open them. I am so happy to have Windows in a studio though. As far as I can tell they are extremely soundproof and I couldn't be happier. Basically you need to buy two panes of glass and build the window frame yourself. This may seem daunting but honestly with some basic construction knowledge it's not the end of the world. The key to the soundproofing side is to get two different thicknesses of glass and make sure that the type of glass is correct for soundproofing. To save you a ton of time and research I would just do what I did. For your outside piece of glass use 3/4 in laminate glass. For your inside piece of glass use half an inch of tempered glass. These thicknesses and the differences of types of glass will all help with the soundproofing. Remember that just like anything in the room the glass needs to be airtight snug in the hole for the window. You also want to get as big of an air gap in between the two panes of glass that you can. When you build double walls you automatically have a really great huge air gap. If you only have a single wall or a traditional window then your air gap may be smaller like three to four inches. Regardless this technique will greatly improve soundproofing in a window. that was a lot of information and if you want a ton more you can take my free course on how to design your home studio here: www.soundproofyourstudio.com.
